Volume down and power doesn't get you to bootloader mode?
Sounds like power button might be stuck.
Its the button it all works now after I did a factory reset. But if it gets warm the power button malfunctions. Also it will not shutdown completely it always reboots.

You should flash twrp through a shell and flash a ROM for your device. They have lots for the nexus 7. I'm actually working on one called flojoy if you have the WiFi only. I also know of a pretty rooted stock ROM (4.4.4) with busybox.its here: http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=cat&id=94

Can you return it? Sounds defective.
This could also be caused by a bad battery. I know it doesn't sound like it could be related, but I have been through a few devices that have behaved like this that were fixed by a battery replacement. Not the easiest thing to do on this device, but not hard either.

This may be a dumb question but before today I never even knew it existed. What is "safe mode"? Is that like safe mode on a windows pc where it only loads default drivers, or is it something else entirely?

I'm interested too. In what capacity did you first learn of "safe mode"?
??
I don't think this exists on this phone, so I am not sure what you're talking about here.
There is the bootloader, recovery, and then normal phone functions.
Where did you hear about safe mode?
I know there's hboot.. recovery and bootloader. But safe mode never heard of it

I actually found out about it on accident. My phone kept looping at the boot animation. I went to pull the battery but accidently hit vol down and power button at same time wile pulling off the cover. All of a sudden phone vibrated 3 times and then booted but it had safe mode printed in the lower left corner. I tried googling it but couldnt find anything thay explained exactly what it is.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
You can try it on your phones. When the boot animation starts playing hold vol down and power at the same time. Keep holding it untill your phone vibrates.

It did allow me to fix my phone without having to restore a nandroid. I was trying to get a hotboot mod to work on the new stock rooted GB when i got the boot loop. But being able to boot into safe mode allowed me to change the moded file back to the original therfore fixing my boot loop issue.

Hmmm I did try it but couldn't replicate your results. I tried holding V-&Power at both the splash screen and the bootanimation. Both attempts yeilded only booting normally.

Hmm not sure works constitently for me. You have to keep holding them until your phone vibrates. You are on a DINC right? Are you on custom or stock rom, not sure if its specific to the rom or not. I am on stock rooted GB.

Yea no, I think its a HTC Sense thing. I'm currently running CM Nightly 168 so I don't think its a 'general' Android thing.

I've been doing some more googling and it seems every stock rom running android phone has safe mode, but different phones have different ways of entering into it. Some vol down and power, some vol up and power, some you have to hold the menu button, some vol down power and menu, and some holding down the track ball.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
Hmm, never stumbled onto that before. Thanks to everyone for feedback!
Interesting, I'll have to try it next time I change up my phone config
Edit:
Wow, that just saved me from a lot of trouble. Flashed a voltage table that was unstable and caused the phone to bootloop, this worked saving me from an uninstall.

I have a heck of a time getting the device to turn on using the power button. It's as if the button is recessed a bit...it's hard to press in an awkward place.
Also, I've left the device a few times for long stretches to find that I need to boot it up to turn it on. It powered completely down on its own.
I love it, though; definitely not disappointed.

This happened to me today, not sure if it's a symptom of a defective device or just a software bug
Picked mine up this morning. I've seen 3 random reboots with it in my hand today. It had also turned itself off once while in my bag and required a long press to boot back up. For now I'm chalking it up to 4.3 still being in its infancy.
Luckily it reboots really fast!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
Yeah mine reboots here and there on it own. Also I don't like the way that if you're playing a game sometimes and have to listen or read a but of dialogue. The screen auto shutoff will still turn off.......

I had mine next to my bed last night and for some reason when I looked over at the Nexus 7, the screen was "on" but nothing was being displayed. It would not respond to anything. I held down the power button and went to bed.
Now it won't boot at all past the Nexus logo screen! I haven't tried rooting it or anything (I do have BusyBox and SuperSU installed from my previous Nexus 7, but without the bootloader being unlocked or root it shouldn't do anything, right?).
Been waiting for 20 minutes and it's stuck at the Nexus logo screen...
I have a similar issue where upon waking the device in the morning it will reboot. The odd thing it usually doesn't do it right away, but up to a minute afterwards.
Very odd.
No random rebots <knock on wood> but I do find it difficult to find and press the power button without sometimes turning the device to see what I am doing.
Hey guys. I'm new to the Galaxy Nexus forum and I need help. My phone has been turning its screen back on after I lock it. Most people say its a hardware issue but I just got this phone and its brand new. Is it a software issue?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
You bet it can. Try factory resetting your phone. I do assume you're still running stock everything.
If you are and that fails, a hardware issue could be due to a sticky or faulty power button.
I'm running stock 4.2.2 and there's barely anything on it right now. I'm the second owner of this phone but the original owner never used it so I don't know what else is wrong with it.

My s4 has been acting very weird lately. The button combo (vol up+home+power) doesn't work for me. If i try it, it goes straight to download mode. I get no gs4 splash acreen. Only way to boot into recovery is through goo manager. BUTTON COMBO DOES NOT WORK!
If I restart the phone through the power menu it only boots into download mode. If I turn off the phone through the power menu, it will turn off for a second, and then boot into download Mode as long as the battery is in. Only way it reboots regularly is when I get into recovery through goo manager and selecting reboot system.
Only other way to boot the system is doing button combo for download mode and hitting cancel when the screen comes up.
I made a thread about this a couple days ago and was advised to Odin back to stock, which I did. Problem is still there.
The phone did turn off and stay off for about an hour, then the download mode thing came back. This is driving me crazy.
Has ANYONE run into this problem? It can't be just me, my luck can't be that bad.
If it matters, I'm running rooted stock 4.2(MDL) with twrp v2.6.3.1 installed

It definitely is a hardware problem!! I had the same issue with my s3. You can just call T-Mobile and they will send you a new one for a small fee. They charged me $5 for shipping. Just tell them that your volume rocker doesn't work. Make sure you reset your counter before you send it back though:thumbup:

Well thatblows, unfortunately I'm halfway around the world, so I won't be able to get a replacement anytime soon.
So I should just tell them that the rocker doesn't work and they will send a replacement? I've had the phone since it first came out, they won't ask questions? Dont want to be denied and assed out.

So I probable shouldnt play dumb and tell them a funny little android guy shows up when I start the phone huh?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Usually when the device has hardware issues the carrier will replace it for free. I'm not sure how long the warranty is from Samsung. I believe it's a year warranty for phones which covers hardware problems. This is what a T-Mobile representative told me. If your phone is insured through your carrier it should still be covered. I had hardware problems with my HTC Amaze and got a replacement for 5 bucks.

I don't think it is hardware related. Sounds like a bad recovery image, just use Odin to flash a recovery back to the device or flash the Stock Odin 4.2.2 tar to restore stock recovery
---------- Post added at 04:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:53 PM ----------
Also, if its rooted, download Terminal Emulator, and type "su" (press enter) then type reboot recovery (press enter) should work if the recovery image is fine.

I agree about the stock image. I'm not sure if he was successful or if he tried booting into recovery when he went back to stock. I couldn't really understand in his first post but I think he may have tried it. Which is why I think it may be hardware.

I did not. But now that I think about it, after I ODINed back to stock, it did start and turn off normally once or twice.
I really don't think it is a hardware malfunction. But I'm not sure why the button combo for recovery doesn't work.
I won't have access to another computer for awhile. Plus even if I did, I don't think I could wait the 12+ hours to download the stock Odin files again.

OK. When you get on a PC you can search for the MDL stock image here on xda or the Samsung firmware page. Just make sure you choose the correct one. When you go back to stock try the button combo and see what happens. If it works you're good if not just and yourself the hassle and send your phone back.
