This may be a dumb question but before today I never even knew it existed. What is "safe mode"? Is that like safe mode on a windows pc where it only loads default drivers, or is it something else entirely?

I'm interested too. In what capacity did you first learn of "safe mode"?
??
I don't think this exists on this phone, so I am not sure what you're talking about here.
There is the bootloader, recovery, and then normal phone functions.
Where did you hear about safe mode?
I know there's hboot.. recovery and bootloader. But safe mode never heard of it

I actually found out about it on accident. My phone kept looping at the boot animation. I went to pull the battery but accidently hit vol down and power button at same time wile pulling off the cover. All of a sudden phone vibrated 3 times and then booted but it had safe mode printed in the lower left corner. I tried googling it but couldnt find anything thay explained exactly what it is.

You can try it on your phones. When the boot animation starts playing hold vol down and power at the same time. Keep holding it untill your phone vibrates.

It did allow me to fix my phone without having to restore a nandroid. I was trying to get a hotboot mod to work on the new stock rooted GB when i got the boot loop. But being able to boot into safe mode allowed me to change the moded file back to the original therfore fixing my boot loop issue.

Hmmm I did try it but couldn't replicate your results. I tried holding V-&Power at both the splash screen and the bootanimation. Both attempts yeilded only booting normally.

I've been doing some more googling and it seems every stock rom running android phone has safe mode, but different phones have different ways of entering into it. Some vol down and power, some vol up and power, some you have to hold the menu button, some vol down power and menu, and some holding down the track ball.

Hmm, never stumbled onto that before. Thanks to everyone for feedback!
Interesting, I'll have to try it next time I change up my phone config
Edit:
Wow, that just saved me from a lot of trouble. Flashed a voltage table that was unstable and caused the phone to bootloop, this worked saving me from an uninstall.

From HERE "blah blah blah...Then the Safe mode notification will be shown on the bottom left of the display. In Safe mode, all third-party applications will not be executed so you can boot up your phone successfully to uninstall any applications that you may have recently installed or which may be stopping your phone from booting correctly"
For example, if you have SetCPU configured to clock your phone at 2.3GHz at boot, then you won't be able to boot up normally. You would boot into Safe Mode, uninstall SetCPU, then reboot normally.

Hey all -- I am an idiot, first and foremost.
I was running an older version of CM7 and just bought an Evo 3D. I decided to sell my Evo 4G online, and went to unroot it. I ran the original software RUU (1.06.651.4) on the phone, (because I am dumb and didn't think things through) and now it is semi-bricked.
Symptoms:
The phone turns on with only a black screen (it is "lit up" but nothing appears on the screen).
The phone vibrates once, then the phone plays a sound (a little tune) to indicate it is booting up.
The phone plays a sound to indicate a low battery warning.
The phone plays a sound to indicate when I connect the USB cable to it.
If I try to boot to bootloader by holding Vol-Down when powering up, the black screen appears with no sound and no further action.
If I try to re-run the RUU, or run a different RUU, I get a USB Connection Error.
I can't run an RUU, I can't flash anything because I have no access to Recovery, etc.
Can anyone help fix my stupidity? I shouldn't have rushed into unrooting. Damnit.
Mmm. Interesting situation. I don't think you're screwed though.
Try this.
Pull the battery and let it chill for a minute.
Put it back in
Try to boot into bootloader again by holding volume down key.
Hopefully it will allow you to boot into hboot.
Report back how that goes

All of those require the ability to access the bootloader.
But thanks.
First off:
R800x
VZW 2.3.4
Rooted
Okay, here is the issue. After installing the Darkforest CDMA 3.0.5 rom for locked bootloaders, I began to notice that after about 0.5-12 hours of my phone being on, it would REMAIN on (I know this because using the volume rockers would either vibrate or make noise) but the screen would be completely black, and use of the power button or home button would cause no reaction from the phone. Then I would have to remove the battery, replace it, and then attempt to reboot (reboot would only happen about 1/10 times, unless booting into recovery mode.) Reluctantly, in an attempt to fix this I wiped system, flashed back to my 2.3.3 ftf, rooted, and OTA'd to 2.3.4. But, it is still happening, but I notice boot DOES work, only about 10 minutes after pressing the button.
Any help is gratefully accepted.
EDIT: After a little testing, I noticed after the screen goes out, sliding the gamepad out fixes the issue, I am not sure if it fixes it on boot. Is this possibly a hardware issue, or software issue?
EDIT: Pulling out the Game pad once or twice during boot or after the screen goes black DOES fix it and shows the screen, no idea what's wrong, if it is hardware issues is it possible to fix?

It's weird...whenever I try to do any of those things, the screen will turn on for a moment [the backlight, no logo or anything comes up] and then after about a second immediately turns off....I tried injecting a rooted version of the stock rom with Odin into my phone, but I kept getting strange error messages like TouchWiz isn't working and some other android process isn't working.
[That didn't work, so I decided to try a different method. This is where I ****ed up, because I forgot to go back to stock rom...]
Anyways, after that, I tried to use the SGS3 Toolkit [if you search sgs3 toolkit xda, it'll come up] and I tried to use that to root. I went to "rooting options" and i selected option number 3, the all in one. I got to the point where it mentions your phone must be in USB debugging, and now nothing comes up when I try to start the phone..but it vibrates whenever I hold the power button long enough [as if it was working normally]. I can't get into download mode right now, either...
How do I reverse this and go back to stock? Please help...thank you so much.

I'm basing this answer based on how I understood what you said...
But, if you're already rooted, then hopefully you've made a backup before installing another ROM. If you have a backup, then put into recovery and backup.

Well, I sent it back to T-Mobile and said hey it doesn't work. Let's see if they say anything about it. They sent me a new one, though
I'm having exactly the same problem with my T-Mobile Galaxy SII T989 running Open Kang AOKP JB Jelly Bean. After reading this thread, and another related thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679492), my less than scientific observation is that pressing/massaging/jiggling the power button seems to bring the device back to life. At least until it flakes out again. The posts in this thread were a big help. I was going to ditch the ROM, which would have been a shame. Thanks.
My s4 has been acting very weird lately. The button combo (vol up+home+power) doesn't work for me. If i try it, it goes straight to download mode. I get no gs4 splash acreen. Only way to boot into recovery is through goo manager. BUTTON COMBO DOES NOT WORK!
If I restart the phone through the power menu it only boots into download mode. If I turn off the phone through the power menu, it will turn off for a second, and then boot into download Mode as long as the battery is in. Only way it reboots regularly is when I get into recovery through goo manager and selecting reboot system.
Only other way to boot the system is doing button combo for download mode and hitting cancel when the screen comes up.
I made a thread about this a couple days ago and was advised to Odin back to stock, which I did. Problem is still there.
The phone did turn off and stay off for about an hour, then the download mode thing came back. This is driving me crazy.
Has ANYONE run into this problem? It can't be just me, my luck can't be that bad.
If it matters, I'm running rooted stock 4.2(MDL) with twrp v2.6.3.1 installed

It definitely is a hardware problem!! I had the same issue with my s3. You can just call T-Mobile and they will send you a new one for a small fee. They charged me $5 for shipping. Just tell them that your volume rocker doesn't work. Make sure you reset your counter before you send it back though:thumbup:

Usually when the device has hardware issues the carrier will replace it for free. I'm not sure how long the warranty is from Samsung. I believe it's a year warranty for phones which covers hardware problems. This is what a T-Mobile representative told me. If your phone is insured through your carrier it should still be covered. I had hardware problems with my HTC Amaze and got a replacement for 5 bucks.

I don't think it is hardware related. Sounds like a bad recovery image, just use Odin to flash a recovery back to the device or flash the Stock Odin 4.2.2 tar to restore stock recovery
---------- Post added at 04:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:53 PM ----------
Also, if its rooted, download Terminal Emulator, and type "su" (press enter) then type reboot recovery (press enter) should work if the recovery image is fine.

I agree about the stock image. I'm not sure if he was successful or if he tried booting into recovery when he went back to stock. I couldn't really understand in his first post but I think he may have tried it. Which is why I think it may be hardware.

I did not. But now that I think about it, after I ODINed back to stock, it did start and turn off normally once or twice.
I really don't think it is a hardware malfunction. But I'm not sure why the button combo for recovery doesn't work.
I won't have access to another computer for awhile. Plus even if I did, I don't think I could wait the 12+ hours to download the stock Odin files again.

OK. When you get on a PC you can search for the MDL stock image here on xda or the Samsung firmware page. Just make sure you choose the correct one. When you go back to stock try the button combo and see what happens. If it works you're good if not just and yourself the hassle and send your phone back.
