This may have been discussed or the idea floated in the past but has anyone thought of building a ROM solely for using the desire as an MP3 player, or music player in general. With the Desire being a bit aged now, and i imagine most people have upgraded, but still have the desire floating around, it would be handy as a mp3 player for car or whatever.
The idea being...
Stripping out .. phone/sms functionality, and really minimising the ROM for speed and performance by removing any other unnecessary apps and features. But keeping Bluetooth and WiFi.
I've tried it in the past with various available ROMs, it kind of works but its fiddly and messy. I think it would require a bit more in depth development to iron out any issues.
Just putting the idea out there for anyone skilled who still likes tinkering with the desire.
If all your doing is playing MP3's I don't really see what you gain by removing features? playing MP3's is hardly demanding.
Why just remove everything from your home screen except your MP3 player of choice, put the phone in aeroplane mode to save battery and enjoy!
Maybe you could disable the lock screen too so your straight in to the MP3 player when you wake the phone up.

The idea of removing unnecessary apps is for a few basic reasons:
* Increasing free ram
* Reduce battery drain
* Reduce Rom Footprint (use smaller system partition).
And why have a bunch of apps using resource, when they aren't required for the purpose intended.
Basically removing everything that's not needed to make the phone a basic mp3 player, as i explained above. With the point in mind, a phone without a sim.
Like i also said, I've done it by striping down a ROM manually, and it does work really well as intended, but its a messy, time consuming procedure. I was just wondering if there was any skilled people out there who liked the idea, and wanted to create a more polished concept.
Another point, why try to force the Desire to run android 4+, which is really isn't designed for, and make a better functioning ROM as MP3 player.
Google the idea, there been a number of people asking similar across various websites, and i think its a valid and practical idea, for making better use of an old phone.
I'm also unsure as to how much would be gained by doing this. Lightest weight launcher, with a single home page with music widget controls seems the same thing.
- If all you're doing is using it for music, it doesn't really need much RAM. It's a background process with the screen off most of the time.
- If it doesn't have a SIM or even just in airplane mode, the phone/SMS capability is already removed, regardless of what's in the ROM. Any other apps which require an internet or network connection will just lie dormant. I agree removing them removes any possibility of battery usage, but they won't 'drain' it significantly by merely existing. For instance SMS won't use anything without a SIM. If you don't login to any gmail account etc, there's nothing to sync, so no usage there either.
- I was always the same, removing unncessary apps and sounds etc from /system to fit it into a smaller hboot. However this was in order to conversely gain as much space on /data to increase space for apps. If the ROM is only used for music, it will have lots of free space anyway, whether it's on /system or /data doesn't really matter in this instance. All the music is stored and played from the sdcard anyway
However if you've already done it and gone through all the effort of stripping everything out of a ROM.zip, why not repackage your own music ROM with only the music player, and release it giving proper credits?
I say put it out there, let the 'market' decide whether it is popular that's what the development section does
Guys, you're missing the point, im putting an idea out there, to see if someone will some dev skill wants to take it further. Surely there's a bunch of people who have desires lying around, rather than sell (for very little) or bin it, why not transform its function, properly.
The problem is that devs mostly like to add and fine tune features. This is the opposite, removing almost everything except the music player from the ROM.zip.
And why let a dev steal your idea and do exactly what you've already done? You've put in the leg work, release it. People who only want a music ROM could want it. Give it a good name, let it fly I say.
How can a dev take ur idea further its only going to have mp3 on it?

Just a relatively short question about bluetooth audio performance.
Been using Meschle's Touch 3.0, currently drooling over getting a bigger SD card for my music, but thats another story.
I've just started to use bluetooth music, got my funky headphones and am loving the lack of cables But the phone really slows down when doing so. Everything is in slow motion, if i want to access contacts or programs, the phone becomes painfully slow. I'm thinking that the cube may have something to do about that, but i want to keep this rom on my phone for just a little longer before i reflash.
Will Removing the cube(or changing to a version without it) yield a tangible speed increase or is there something else that i can do to improve performance, currently running @ 247mhz.
Cheers
P.S have the registry modification for giving higher priority to BT audio, maybe that has something to do with it, not sure.
A2DP phone performance
Yes, I discovered that it really slows down the phone if you're streaming A2DP...
two solutions/workarounds - 1: use a lean rom - I'm now back at Vanilla 2.01. Secondly, try using CorePlayer (www.coreplayer.com, serials are 'available') for playing the audio - it's far more efficient over a2dp, so should make an improvement
what we can expect ? An OMAP 201 event overclocked at 267? If you really need A2DP, perhaps you should change your pda.
Biou, your post isn't helpful in the slightest, did i sound like i was making a complaint? which part did i say i need A2DP? Do you have money to throw around whenever you see a new feature? I sure as hell don't! I've got bills to pay!
'Perhaps you should change your pda' isn't going to help me in the slightest!
But i suppose i should expect that kind of response on a public forum, I suppose my expectations are too high, even here!!! How about this......if i 'ever' post another question again, please choose to ignore it unless you actually have something useful to say, thanks and goodbye!
And now thats over with......
TangerineTractor: Thanks for the insight, i was leaning towards getting a lighter build, the cube feature isn't something that i ever use, so that can go without hesitation, but......everything else........i love all of the little extras that come with the rom, plus the HTC home integration with audio manager is sweet too. although the audio manager isn't the best playback software out there, it's the ease of use which has got me.
Lots to think about but i'll probably use one of the lite(no cube) Artemis Touch 3.01 roms, and chop from there. I'll check out coreplayer also.
Thanks again!
Hi bro,
I have went through lots of painful experiences in tweaking the ad2p settings when I was using HP rw6828. For artemis, its is a really painless to tweaks the settings. But for AD2p, if you are using the direct way of streaming, it is normal to experience lack.
You may wish to try MIS Blueplayer which gave excellent sound quality. but apparently, tweaks need to be made so that you can have the player playing in power saving mode.
Hope this helps.

Well, I decided to upgrade to Meschle's Non-cube 3.01 firmware, opted for the full version as most of the extra's don't necessarily run in the background.
Seems to much smoother without the cube running in the background, and as i never really used the cube, it's not exactly a feature that i'm going to miss.
Bluetooth streaming does seem to take quite a bit out of this poor little phone. But i'm still loving it.
Now all i need is my psp bluetooth adaptor, and 8GB memory card, and i'm all set
Hello all,
Whilst it hasn't been confirmed 100% that HTC Desire users will get the new Sense software as currently seen on the DesireHD - I just wanted to put across some of my opinions and ask if other feel the same way as me.
There's some DesireHD ROMs in the Desire Android Development section, which for the most part are based fully on the ROM found inside the HTC RUU, but moving most of the system applications to a EXT partition.
This means that the software itself on the phone is pretty much all of HTC's work, there's no added applications by the ROM chef.
This means, if (and that's a big if seeing as the Desire's /system partition is smaller than that of the DesireHD's) the Desire Sense 2.0 software we're apparently going to get will be very similar to the custom ROM's we're seeing now.
If this is the case, I'll be extremely disappointed by some of the direction that HTC have taken. They seem to have completely moved away from creating a better user interface for their consumers and instead, tried to find ways of making a quick buck or two.
For example:
SoundHound Trial - Installed to /system, so for those who do not root, this is uninstallable. I have Shazam with unlimited tagging due to installing it before a certain date
HTC Locations - A link to enabling Premium Navigation from Route66
AmazonMP3 - Tied into the music player
So I assume they have some deals in place with the developers / owners of these services, so they get some investment for distributing this software with their phones?
I don't want my ROM to be infested with trial ware, I bought my HTC Desire SIM free so I've given them my bloody money.
Okay, so I can remove these easily as I do root my phones and know my way around ADB but I just don't like the fact HTC are doing this after how clean the WWE ROM for the HTC Desire was.
Does anyone share the same opinion or see where I'm coming from?
I'm sure all users would feel the same way as you do if HTC only included some trial-ware stuff. But this is hardly the case. The new Sense has a lot of significant improvements. Just to name a few:
-pinch in browser to access tabs.
-new interface in Mail (allows you to quickly select multiple messages to action)
-new widgets
-offline maps
-HTCsense.com
-fast boot
-themes
etc
Now, if those included softwares actually get in the way of the day-to-day operations of the phone, then sure, users would be pissed. For example, in the US, there are Android phones sold where it forces the user to use Bing for search and maps. HTC certainly doesn't force you onto those apps. You can choose to ignore them if you wish.
Sometimes, you just got to weigh the benefits with the drawbacks. I personally don't like having trialware on my phone. But the advantages of the new ROM far outweighs the minor inconvenience of me having to ignore the trial stuff...
I haven't had a chance to look into the new sense much (but i like the sound of the htcsense.com stuff) - but I would find it annoying having trialware that can't be removed - whenever I get a new laptop the first thing to go is all the junk (usually by a fresh re-install of the OS in some cases!)
at least with a PC it can be removed - I'm hoping that any extra junk that is installed can be ignored as the new features of Sense 2.0 seem nice!
I agree with the OP on this. First of all the Desire has a very limited internal memory. They wanted to cut costs on that and now they realize 512MB is not enough for everything and have increased it for Desire Z and HD. Thanks to all the mods here we are able to root and move some portion of rom to sd giving us more freedom to install apps.
Loading the system partition with bloat/crapware like this is going to bring down the useful data partition size and making it uninstallable makes me go what the *&^%
I paid my money and so "I" should decide what app are installed in my phone not "them" making those crapwares uninstallable is not good at all... they didnt give the phone for free or @ discounted rate...
Including trialwares is one thing... but making them non-removable completely puts me off. Being locked out of doing what I want with my device is what made me hate Apple... Android is open.. users do what they want or like.. it must be kept that way..
So I am developing my plan/process to do my first root.
I have decided on Syndicate because it seems like the most stripped down version from what I have read, stable and fast.
With that said, I am having trouble deciding on which kernel. I do understand that every phone is different, that my Epic may not take one rom and or kernl but will take another.
GOAL: I am wanting to make my phone as fast as possible on the stock speed. I dont care about overclocking or anything like that. I want default there. But I want to make sure the kernel I choose is as stable as possible and plays nice with the battery. (edit: when I say fast as possible, I just mean zero lag, easily moves between screens and apps)
Since my 64gb ipod was stolen, I am going to be using my Epic and Google Music for my mp3 player, so music quality is my top concern.
I will then theme my phone, most likely just icons though.
with that said, I guess I have a few choices? TwilightZone, Genocide, etc. I am reading as much as I can, but cant really see what benefit one gets over the other.
I do not tether.
I always use wireless when I can.
Mostly music, some facebook, I do use it to browse.
Then the normal..texting, phone, etc.
If you see any confusion on my part, please go easy on me and let me know

Genocide 2.0 by Rodderick. Hands down
Thanks, I appreciate the response.
Poweramp has been my musc player top choice... if you use slacker and set it to cache while you sleep you can replay your cached selection without using any data later, data connection kills battery in the background too. I have no clue of what kernels to reccomend since I recently flashed to eh17 deodexed stock. I prefer to make my modifications on my own though, just so I can learn them all by hand for a future rom release

Let's Go NYG NYJ
couple of reasons I chose google music. (poweramp seems to be the most recommended though, and I would go with it, but.....)
I want my entire music library with me, so I can choose anything I want. That is why I had the 64gb ipod.
With the epic, I can go up to 32gb micro sd, but at the moment, no money, not until November (we will be credit card free then )
So, with Google music, it is free (at the moment), and I can load up my entire library. Sound quality is just fine.
Once I get the 32gb microsd, I will switch to poweramp.
Try out all the kernels. See which one work well with your device.
Revolt kernel has a lot of praise, as does the newest Twilight.
Many people swear by Genocide though, so that's what I've got for you.

Is there someplace people can go to make requests for new Android features? (Someplace were developers might actually see it and perhaps implement the requests?)
I have had ideas for several features that I think would make my Android devices (I have owned about 6) far better...
- One of my ideas was the ability for more than one Bluetooth device (ie: wireless headphone/earphones) to be able to connect to a single Android device at the same time. I go running, hiking, etc... When I go alone, I often listen to music. It would be great if when I run with someone else, if they could listen to the music I am playing on my Android device at the same time I am.
- I have changed ROMs many times, but when I do, it is always a pain to have to setup (or recreate) my music playlists on the new ROM. Many (not all) Android music players seem to allow users to import music playlists that have been created on PCs or whatever. None of the music players or the Android OS itself seem to allow me to save a music playlist as a file (ie: export) that I can reload later, use on another device, or give to someone else.
- None of the Android ROMs I have come across seem to provide a (relatively easy) way to change the the the resolution (LCD density) so that I can make images and text larger or smaller on my display. This is something that is very easy to do (change a setting and hit save/apply) on every PC I have ever owned, but the few ROMs that seem to allow this seem to have a complex procedure for doing it.
- Ability to put Widgets in folders (on the desktop). I like widgets. I sometimes even like the UI of a widget better than the associated app. (Sometimes widgets provides a nice condensed view of the information/features, or provide simple capabilities like a switch to turn on/off a feature without launching menus and digging through them.) Unfortunately the Android OS (or the "Home" apps that currently exist) does not (do not) allow widgets to be put into a folder on the desktop. I would like this feature for many reasons. 1) The folder could limit the widget from consuming battery or system resources until the folder was opened. That way widgets would not use up my battery or CPU cycles until I opened the folder and looked at them.
- It would be great to have a "magnifying glass" (zoom feature) that I could use to make any specific area on the display larger (so that if I'm having trouble seeing something small on the display, I can magnify it large enough to see it).
I have more ideas, but those are just a few of the things I think would make Android devices better. Feel free to add your own suggestions to this list.
Pretty good ideas as far as magnifying just pinch to zoom in that specific area or double tap. I believe there are apps to backup a music playlist the bluetooth idea is actually kind of cool

Great ideas. I use Google Music to set up my playlists with my music on my desktop at home. No matter if I'm at work, over a friends house, or switching roms on my phone, as soon as I download google music, all my playlists and music is right at my fingertips.
As far as resolution changing, I would suggest Carbon Rom as you can change your density in less than a minute, and that's mostly because you have to reboot twice, but there are no force close issues or any of that.
As far as features go, I would like to see recovery feature addition:
The thing I hate the most about switching roms is having to log in to 15 different accounts again. I wish TWRP would construct a feature that allows me to carry over my sign in information for standard apps (Facebook, Webex, GroupME, etc.) that most people use.
Or perhaps, a ROM that offered three different login slots that attempted to log into every app that I restore using those slots first and if login is unsuccessful, THEN prompt me to enter login information.
Just a suggestion that would allow the end-user to streamline setting up his/her rom. What do you guys think?
PS: I think the multi-bluetooth device feature would be sweet as well. I have a couple of computers at home that I use my Note to control, it would be nice to have the option to control any given device in an instance.
As for resolution, that's much more easier said than done, since some apps would have to be rebuilt from the ground, or at least would have to individually be written and flashed for said resolution.
However, if there are a few apps that you really want to change (like for me, G-Mail, Chrome, XDA, gReader, etc), you really need to check out XPosed, honestly, I don't know if I'll ever buy a device that doesn't support it or something similar. It features on the fly resolution/DPI adjustments per app, one of the greatest MODs ever brought to Android, hands down.
The Note2 does what I need it to once rooted. I would like to see better prices and data first. Why have the next great thing when you pay out the ass and don't have equal speed?
I would like to see Android updates that actually make me want them, like better codex, performance, UI functions, etc. Some updates don't really seem like updates, like when Ubuntu releases a new version but you do the same thing as before, and you are left wanting more.

I agree somewhat. However, I think that the 4.2.2 roms with Linaro are noticeably faster than other 4.2.2 roms without it. Carbon is much faster without me having to use apps like Pimp My Rom and Lag Reducer without compromising my battery performance.
Halo is also another great custom feature that may one day rival the stock multi-window feature.
I also like the profile triggers built into Carbon, bluetooth and wifi triggers are wonderful, hopefully we can get some GPS triggers, then we will really be in business lol.
All in all, I agree with you though, we need some REAL POWER behind these updates. But I'm sure devs would say "Let's get some real CASH behind the devs and you guys will see some POWER!!" **Gotta look at it from both sides**

See I like Touchwiz and the stock UI bs and want more of these mods to make into a stock ROM, sometimes I wish Sammy read these types of forums.
I've debated rooting and flashing a rom for a long time, and today, my GPS refused to get a signal after half an hour. Since all GPS fixes need root anyway, I wondered which ROM comes most reccomend for tons of Bluetooth audio use (in car, with headphones, with speaker in shower). If a ROM exists that will mount my SD card and treat it as part of internal/USB storage so I could store Google Play Music offline music on it, I'd be highly interested in that.
I'm a Nova Prime user, so I'm less inclined to care about what kind of home screen interface the ROMs come with so long as I can turn them off quickly. I wouldn't mind a more useful dialer, or a pre-loaded messaging app that allows individual contact text tones, but I'm not picky. I use the keyboard a lot, so I'd appreciate a ROM that comes with the backlight fix, but I could do it myself or learn to live without if it came to it. While battery life is important, I also use a 2640 mAh battery (the gold one ya'll mentioned in the accesories subforum), so I can usually last a day unless I'm doing lots of radios at once for prolonged periods, like GPS, BT, and HSPA+ at once.
My other Android device is a rooted, stock 4.2.2 Nexus 7 (Wifi only, 16, since I didn't wait long enough for them to announce a 32). My experience with with rooting and flashing that device was all-inclusive via the toolkit wug put together for Nexus devices. Can you point me towards the best tutorials for Odin? I have the proper drivers already (getting the upgrade to 4.0.4 for my Mom's glide was an ordeal), I just need opinions on ROM flavors based on my needs.
Also, I'd love Google Now on my phone (for the widget if nothing else), but I'm afriad of the glitches it seems to have on Tegra 2 devices. Thoughts?
Thanks for all you contribute to this dev community so users like I can feel brave enough to modify our phones.

You have limited options for stock based roms. Lite is what I use. The Bluetooth audio has no issues with my two cars. I use the all access pass for music and moving it to the sd card handled that. A better option is to partition your sd card and use link 2sd to move the cache. When I return to the states this is what I will be doing
