Presuming it's possible. I've not come across anything I've not been able to do so far.
Also, is there any cases of anyone bricking their Desire doing this? I've never rooted a phone before.
Thanks
No one has done it so...none, no, and no.
Im pretty new to all this myself, but......
at the moment you cannot root the desire, so i doubt anyone has bricked the desire trying.
some of the advantages of rooting the desire are that it will allow people to design custom roms that will be tweaked for better performance or longer battery life or what ever they want, it will also allow apps to be installed on the SD card there for you will not be limited on the size of the rom on the phone. Also i believe it can allow people in countries that dont have access to paid apps the change to access them.
Like i say im quite new to android and this is what i've picked up while having a read.
http : // twitter.com/ paulobrien (minus the spaces created) is your one stop for news about the rooting in progress!!!
When you can Root you have access to system files, which means their will be potential fixes for low volume, and you can also choose the speed that you run your CPU.
Also Rooting enables you to run unsigned ROM's which means you can install. say a custom Nexus Rom on the Desire There is plenty of fun to be had by Rooting your phone))))))))
JD
Great am following that twitter account now, fingers crossed the device gets rooted before the next version comes out
Thanks guys. That's some pretty fun stuff. Better battery life would be good (without removing Sense UI, which is ace). I've no problem with the volume.
That fact you cannot install apps on to the SD card is also just nuts. Most apps are small but those language apps (i.e - Learn Spanish etc...) can be 10Mb+
About 3 months ago (end of march?) I upgraded from my old trusty Hero to the new HTC Desire, and as everyone who has had the joy of owning one I've been very happy with it, specially after (with the unvaluable help of XDA) I managed to iron out some of its quirks.
My only issue with it is that lately I keep getting the annoyng taskbar icon and message that says that there's no more space available on my phone and that I should delete some more apps to free some more space.
I constantly kept reducing the number of my apps every few days, renouncing to some I was quite fond of, and eliminating all double functions even though I liked to have the possibility to choose, but the space keeps getting smaller and smaller, not because I install more apps , but only because I update the apps I already have.
Every time I update my apps the newer versions apparently take more space than the ones they substitute, so that nearly every time I update I am forced to erase at least one of my apps.
Soon I'll have space for only one super-updated app !
I have noticed that the "no more space" icon & message pops up every time the free space goes under 10% and after the latest updates I have only 9% ( 13 mb) left.
The problem is that now I have just the absolutely necessary apps, those I feel I just can't do without.
All in all , including all the original apps and programs that came with the phone and that it's impossible to erase, I've got 128 icons on my menu.
Is that many?
I'm pretty sure that I had more in my old Hero.
On my other phone , an HTC HD2, I have found a very useful app (for win mob 6.5) that frees memory and even speeds up the phone, does anyone knows of an equivalent program for Android 2.1?
Or maybe of some way to get some free space by some other method, like moving something to the mem card, or getting rid of some useless stuff?
Please?
This thing is getting relly frustrating.
No way to solve this issue barr flashing a FroYo rom or installing APPS2SD
Easier to install a FroYo rom but they are still buggy.

OT: how do you like your Desire compared to the HD2?
I have the HD2 and I think the phone hardware is great, love the screen and the RAM and ROM. So far the best phone I have ever had, and I have had a lot.
I would love to try Android (would love to have it on a phone with the HD2 specs - and ATT )

I came from HD2 as well and I have to agree that HD2 hardware is far more superior than the Desire. The build quality is good, large screen is gorgeous.
However, I prefer Android so much more than Winmo. Glad that I made the switch.

it seems to be THE OS everyone is going to. I will wait until 2.2 gets on a phone that I can use with ATT, and that might only be a month away.
This is a known issue, I've had it but it seems to have gone. While I have no 100% sure cure I will try to give you some advice, hopefully it will solve the problem.
Question (please reply) : does your phone take a lot (I mean A LOT) of time to power down? I ask this because I feel there's a problem with the Desire's shutdown routine, it should clear some cache and old/obsolete data during shutdown but sometimes it fails.
Back to your problem, you have 2 options: try to force the phone to do the right thing and reclaim space OR restore to factory default and reinstall everything. Of course, second option is a little bit painful but as you have already been forced to uninstall most of the apps you'll have less to reinstall after a full wipe.
As for first option:
- try to power down / reboot your phone several times in a row; be patient, let it do it's thing, don't pull the battery out.
- power down your phone then power up by keeping MENU key pressed until it boots up: this will force it into safe mode (it only loads apps installed in the ROM, not the ones you added later). Can't really tell you why/how this helps but it solved my problem and it doesn't hurt to try. After booting into safe mode check the amount of space you have: should be OK now. Power down the phone and power up normally.
- check your apps (Settings, applications, manage applications) to see which ones take so much space. Maybe it's the browser cache, maybe Gmail storage or whatever. After taking care of one or more of them (e.g. clear browser cache) reboot your phone (power it down as it should, not by pulling battery out, to allow it to do it's shutdown routine).
I really hope this helps, I know how frustrating it can be. Froyo can't come soon enough! Or some real/safe root method.
I have been experiencing similar problems (although far less extreme), I tried starting in safe mode, clearing the browser cache and restarting, my free memory went from 74Mb to 105Mb but this change only showed up after the restart.
Thanx for the the prompt answers and the suggestions which I am trying right now.
I did'nt think about emptying the the browsers' caches because I thought that this kind of data would be kept in my capacious 16GB sd card.
I'm gonna do it right away because I use 3 browsers: Opera as default, but also Xscope and Dolphin which are really great to watch flash videos and I love watching long BBC documentaries in my spare time.
Besides I just noticed that Xscope automatically clears its cache on exit (if the option is activated) and Dolphin stores it on the memo card (also if the option is checked).
As for your questions.
1) No, my Droid switches off (and on ) very fast, much faster than my old Hero or my old N97, or my old Omnia, faster than my old HTC HD, and even slightly faster than my (actual) HTC HD2.
I guess it's thanks of the snappy Snapdragon CPU.
2) I do feel a bit silly having 2 phones but after having tried a Hero I just had to buy one and once I did I immediatly became a true Android convert.
I use Gmail, Gdocs, Gcalendar as my basic programs and iGoogle is my startpage , moreover the choice of free apps on Android market is without equal (i know because my wife insists on using iPhone 3GS, and now she even bought a 27" iMac hoping to get the same seamless sync'ing I get with my google apps on PC and my Android phone).
But no matter how much I love Android, the HD2 ,( which I had since september 2009) is just too good to let it go.
Forget about all the great Android Apps, but to watch pics, vids, to read e books and downloaded PDF pages, and also to listen to music it has no equal (in my opinion).
The camera and videocam (after applying the latest firmware and the fixes found here on XDA) are better than those on the Desire.
The voice dialing for the HD2 just works (thanx to dutty's work) also via BT headset and headphones, while the Desire's best voice dialing app (choice dialer) still tends to suck and the lack of a dedicated "call" button makes things even worse .
For one like me, who spends most of his waking time driving a car , voice dialing is a must; and the one Dutty fixed for the HD2 is just great.
Last but not least I bought that beautiful HD2 active holder for table and car (which does not fit the Desire) and I also bought CoPilot sat nav for the HD2 which works perfectly too.
As an excuse for having 2 phones usually I say that I need one for business and one for private use and maybe sometimes it's true too.
I usually keep the Desire in my pocket and the HD2 in my car or briefcase.
In any case because of my job, most of the time (nearly always actually) I am obliged to find space in my briefcase for a good bridge camera, a little vidocam, a dictaphone, and my netbook with accessories and peripherals, plus assorted gizmos according to the specific situation at hand, so the HD2 doesn't really change much in terms of weight.
Unfortunately the only phone that maybe would be able to substitute both my phones would probably be the HTC EVO but it seems like this beauty will never make it to our decadent european continent.
So I look forward to be able to buy the Dell Streak (mini5) and I really hope that next month , once hopefully I'll finally manage to wrap my fingers around it, I will not end up carrying 3 phones.
What do you think?
I'm a desperate case?
OF course not, you are like me and other Desire users... I'm not sorry i bought the phone and even thought that i wouldn't mind having such little space for apps, but really - we have so many apps and can't installed it because of the limited space...
This is also HTC fault because they have to win money, but for what we pay for the Desire and others, we really shuld have bigger internal space (1GB was enough for now).
Froyo will surely solve our main problems, and i also have 2 phones...
I will replace my simple Nokia when WP7 will be released at the end of the year, since i will never have an Apple device bought my me.
The i will have the two best: Android and WP7 - and i know that WP7 won't suffer from another annoying thing on Android: platform fragmentation. I'm sure that all WP7 devices will be automatically updated to latest versions of the OS which not occur with Android phones.
W7 looks poised to be a winner, however in my opinion Sense UI and the changes that HTC made to win mobile 6.5 for the HD2 , are so good that I really don't thik that this particular device needs a different OS.
HTC managed the incredible feat of making win 6.5 good, easy and a plasure to use.
In fact probably when (if) an upgrade for the HD2 will become available , I don't think that I will rush to install w7, which (as all new OSs) will probably see the light burdened with all sorts of bugs, glitches, and childhood diseases, while the newest ROM for HD2 coupled with Sense UI is eminentely stable, and just... good.
What win would need to compete with android is the so called "ecosystem" or "environment" : apps (specially free apps) and integration with cloud services, like Android does with Gmail, Gmaps (with sat nav), Gdocs, Gtalk, Gcalendar, Gtranslate, etc. etc.
I mean, have you seen the Windows marketplace? It's pathetic.
Even OVI market for my old N97 was better than this and I remember that it relly sucked.
They even removed the few free apps there used to be.
As good as W7 will turn out to be, one thing no OS can do is fixing this kind of structural weaknesses in the win "ecosystem".
I think it's for HTC's own good to update the Desire as soon as possible since potential buyers could go out to buy a Nexus if they wait too long.
With the Hero-update, it's another story I think because there were some issues and I think performance was one of them. And that way, HTC managed Hero users to go out and buy the Desire.
But this time, they can't do that move since the Desire is their top-device and the Nexus is a rival although they created the device. HTC would rather people buy the Desire than the Nexus of course.

Well its been a long time since I have played with any winmo device, but I believe ms will make things right with wp7. They already announced new live wave 4 and hotmail support for POP3 and a lot of new techs. Also the so called ecosystem is going great, wp7 will have Xmas and xbox games on it (you will be able to play the very same games on mobile, xbox and pc). The new demos I have seen are amazing and done in very little time, and this is great for developers. One thing that I should expect is, although I like the new OS aspect, they intend that all devices should look the same. This is good for the final user, but for me, an enthusiastic user, I would want to make it more customized. Maybe latter on we will see this happening, but I will bet wp7 will rock! If only Nokia would put all their potential in making great phones with Android and wp7, that would be also great! Fingers crossed

MeeGo/Maemo > Android > Windows Phone 7
Hello. Proud new owner of HTC Desire. I am going crazy at how beautiful this phone is.
I come from Nokia E71, BB Bold 9000, iPhone3G (never used 3Gs/4), Windows Mobile 6.
In all of those cases, I could not completely find OS that suits my needs.
I must say though, Symbian on E71 came closest to what I need.
What do I need?
I just need 5 functions, but I want them to work snappy and extremely fast.
Use the phone, send texts, browse the net, watch movies and use Google Maps. That's it.
As you can see, I am not a power user by any means. I don't need twitter, facebook, or push email. Basically, I am looking for simplest and most basic ROM out there that gets rid of pretty much EVERYTHING (think of custom Windows XP with useless features taken out).
I want to conserve as much battery as I can by not using anything that is not related to me.
Could any of you good folks recommend which ROM I should be looking at? I am not also a big fan of eye-candy, so this ROM I am seeking does not need to have the latest UI there's in the world. Just as long as it looks decent, but WORKS!
Thank you in advance. If there's a thread like this, please just link it and I will get info from there.
I use CyanogenMod with ADW launcher(CM6 comes with it), works great honestly. Does not contain any sort of extra bloat apart from the necessities. OpenDesire might be a good alternative to CM6 but I haven't tried it.
If you want a none sense ROM then Opendesire would easily be the most stable and the fastest. For sense, I would go Leedroid
If you want no Sense, go for OpenDesire. If you want Sense, use Pinky Desire (my personal favorite, clean and simple, also gets OTA updates from ROM Manager) or Leedroid (also great, but doesn't support OTA updating, only manual installation). I could also suggest MacLite, but I don't know about how stable it is. Oh, and don't use AuraxtSense or whatever it's called, it's bloated.

How would cyanogenmod compare with OpenDesire?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
maclite 0.8 - very basic, stripped down version of sense. but it is odexed so you can't theme it. most, if not all, bloats have been removed so i'm expecting quite good battery life. note that it doesn't support the legacy A2SD+ so you're pretty limited with the internal storage. if you're not gonna theme and not gonna install many apps, this rom will pretty much suits you.
Thanks both of you for quick reply.
It's extra needed especially since i am waiting to root my phone because I have a flight tomorrow afternoon, so wanted it rooted in airplane.
Just read features of maclite 0.8....almost had nerd-gasm reading this:

Open Desire for a non sense ROM and and Lee Driod if you decide to go Sense.
OD is my favourite ROM - No bloat, just usefulness

so far, really liking maclite.
but can't seem to find file explorer.

You need to download/install that from the market, as all other 3rd party software.
try all the roms and choose your favourite.
personnaly i use opendesire
seeing you've just got your Desire I would suggest just using the stock rom for a while (yes, boring - but practical). The stock 2.1 rom is really pretty good and meets all of your criteria.
you can suss out what you like/don't like then choose a custom rom accordingly. all you are getting here are what other people like/use.
Hi
this is basically going to be a rant and rave but hopefully a constuctive one
For years i have had smartphones, mainly WM but have strayed to Symbian once and now Android with the Desire
I remember upgrading from the TYTN to the TYTNII and HTC not supplying the drivers we had no proper divx playback and this continued onto the Touch HD which is pretty much why i dediced to go to Android.
Now i have the Desire which i must admit is a very good phone but the storage spce is laughable even with Froyo update which helps a bit it's pathetic
Now i cant wholly blame HTC for this as it's the Android OS that is causing the issue but having more Internal Memory would help.
Strange that the reason for Android not having all data on the sd was to help with piracy and i must admit i have been very conciencous through the years and always bought what i used but now googles policy is forcing me the other way, why pay for apps that i have to uninstall so i can install something else.
Windows Mobile has allowed SD card installs since my first 2003 device, Android has taken a massive step back in my opinion. So much for the 1000's of apps on the android market, it does not say you can only browse them but dont install many as your phone will grind to a halt.
so not so long ago i thought i would get rid of the desire and try another android device only with more internal mem.
i looked at the X10 , looks a good phone but it's still on 1.6 and the promised updates are still just promises.
the Galaxy s looks excellent and has loads of space but it looking around it seems to have quite a few issues with lagging and the GPS issues.
So i thought about looking at the Desire HD but i have problems with the Battery life on the Desire and as the HD battery is smaller there is no way i could live with it.
It seems as if the Maunfacturers are just happy to churn these things out without too much thought , maybe it's cause they always want us to upgrade but just think if one actually made a phone that does what is is supposed to do and do them well they may end up with making a killing.

FYI, the battery is smaller on the desire HD because the 2nd generation snapdragon it has, has much improved battery performance so its not needed
sigh...here we go again...root your device, root your device
you are willing to go as far as buying a new handset?? but your not willing to root?
root your device, install A2SD+ and SD speed fix and you will never look back, it runs flawless
if you cant be bothered learning how, ask someone to do it for you
Tech magazines are choosing the HTC desire as phone as the year as one of the most balanced android phones available
issues like app storage, music/video stutter (due to slow SD read) and even gaming performance can be fixed or improved by rooting your device

The point is you shouldn't HAVE to root your Desire. Look at the Desire HD - 1.5GB of internal space. HTC realised they made a mistake and have now corrected this.
Just cause A2SD is available if you root some people don't WANT to root as it's shouldn't have been needed. For some warranty is actually important
hi again
I dont want to start arguments but as EddyOS wrote why should we have to root ?
to get the desire running well you have to invalidate the warranty does not sound too good.
anyhow i am rooted and use the Move2SDEnabler to move as many apps as possible but kept the stock rom as no orange rom is available as yet in case of warranty issues.
but some cannot be moved and i have 22mb free
a brief list of some of the app sizes i have
Google Maps 8.81mb
Swype 6.03mb
paypal 4.79mb
Ndrive 4.39mb
Gmail 4.1mb
Folder Org 3.88mb
launcher Pro 3.73mb
titanium Backup 2.88mb
Moblox 2.88
beautiful widgets 2.11mb
angry birds 1.92mb
just with these thats 45mb i obviously have more apps installed but as each one takes up anywhere from a few k to 2 mb then how are we expected to be able to install a good amount apps
can i do without any of the above maybe but the point is why should i have to - i purchased them and dont forget the main advertising points about Android are the Market and Customising the Launcher with Widgets.
And as regards to the desire having been chosen as the best phone i wonder how many of the reviewers actually use the phone daily or is it based on a few days usage.
I was under the impression that how i use Froyo Apps2SD was pretty much the same as Apps2SD+ but if you now different then please point me in the right direction
Thanks
A2SD in FroYo only moves the app itself and not the data accociated with it. This only works on apps that have been enabled by the developer to be moved. A2SD+ differs by actually using the EXT3 partition on the SD card as internal memory so all the app data is stored on the SD card (bar some data which has to remain on the device).
HTC have since addressed things with their new handsets by giving them a LOT more internal memory so this should be a thing of the past BUT it doesn't help Desire owners who, like you, can't root as there isn't a stock RUU to revert to for warranty issues (which is a whole different matter and why I only get generic handsets). The only way to incrase memory is to root

You already have a 'void' warranty because you have root, you may aswell go the whole 9 yards and flash a custom rom. just make a nandroid backup of your current rom so you can go back to it if the worst happens.
Having a void warranty never stopped orange from swapping my phone.
I do agree that you shouldn't have to root your phone to make it work, but that's just the way it is

If you ModInstallLocation (which does not require root) you can force most apps to move to SD with FROYO A2SD - as far as I'm aware the exceptions to this have explicity disallowed this.
The main difference between FROYO A2SD and A2SD+ is that A2SD+ relocates the Dalvik cache to SD. Both methods leave /data/data on the device which in the case of some apps (e.g. Google Earth) can be quite substantial.
Personally I use FROYO A2SD, but I've repartitioned to reclaim space from /system and I use Fusecompress to compression the Dalvik cache.
To the OP, you can argue that this is an Android OS issue, but in my opinion this was always an issue with poorly specified hardware rather than the Oscar itself.
My Galaxy Tab has 2GB set aside for applications and the Desire Z/HD have 1.5GB, which rather renders any form of A2SD obsolete.

Dave
Well,if you manage to break your phone somehow make sure you break it badly enough for rendering them unable to detect if you have it rooted!

But you can remove the root right?
Because my Desire started up with the "rebootloop by itself" issue a month ago while I had LeeDroid 2.2x running, and so I removed root by installing a RUU and then sent it away for service like yesterday.
And then they can't void the warranty then right? RIGHT??? :S
Yes but the point is that Orange (the OPs operator) don't have an RUU so you can't do that

Oh, didn't think about that at all.
Hmm, well then he does have some valid complaints. My biggest problem with the unrooted Desire is the internal memory, and I certainly didn't have any idea how small it was prior to purchase and just took for granted that you could store apps on the SD.

Yep that's a big problem for me
As i said i have root but i thought (right or wrong) that if i ever have a problem there is more chance of the service centre not spotting anything if i still have the stock orange rom.
Also when i looked into flashing roms i'm sure that there was an issue with the Orange radio that caused massive problems and that really put me off from doing that.
I must admit i now have 19mb free and have had to delete some apps today after installing the flash update (Another 10mb) and it seems that updates are slowly eating all of the memory and surely HTC must have known this was going to be a problem.
Still i'll now try to look into maybe flashing a rom with APPS2SD+ and see if it's ok to do. i'll also hope for an Orange RUU to be leaked soon
Thanks all
This is what I'd do...
Remove all apps from the phone (uninstall them). And then reboot into recovery. Do a backup so you can revert back to it should you need to send it in (they may not realise you're rooted) but then you can go to a custom ROM using A2SD+ and see how you get on

thanks
sounds like my only choice to avoid the low space
just need to double check the Orange radio thing first
Thanks all
The newer radios should work OK, if not you can use the radio you're on at present assuming you're on Android 2.2 at the moment (albeit the Orange version) - flashing a custom won't touch the radio unless it's included in the ROM file
The radio hasn't been a problem for a while. The newer radios wont lock your device.
My first orange desire was locked by a radio update. I had to fix it with an unlock code.
My second orange desire (warranty replacement) was not locked when I flashed the most recent radio.
Excellent thanks
One more quick question if I may
In your experience would I be better getting a fast mem card as I only have class 2 at the moment
Sent from my HTC Desire
I use a class 2 16GB card and have no issues
hi
well i finally got round to flashing a new rom
went for the leedroid in the end with A2SD+
I had a few issues but read up and worked around them although i read about a gold card but never created one so i hope i'm not setting myself up for a fall without it.
anyhow i'm glad i did it with loads of apps installed i still have 85mb free and nowhere near filled up my 1gb ext3 partition
thanks for the advice all
Hi Folks - I'm trying to find the top 10 reasons why phones are rooted. I want to change the way Android is distributed, software is managed and patches are applied. Please list all your reasons that you think are important
There is only one reason to me. Because I own my device and I want the ultimate root control over it. However, I and probably most other people on this site are not representative of the normal population of phone owners that absolutely do not need root access since for them it would be dangerous.
So far, I only have two, but they are important enough to me. I like having free wireless tethering without paying my carrier anymore. Also, I like the ability to backup my apps and other data to my SD card in case I must wipe my phone or transfer it to another phone. Its a shame there is still no official method to do this on Android phones, whereas Apple can do it with their iPhones and iTunes.
Rooting gives me the power to tweak my phone however which way I want and it may also give me access to features found only other phones like S-Voice for example.
The other major reason is performance. I really care about performance and is willing to squeeze out every ounce of performance the hardware is capable of. Of course, a balance of performance plus great battery life is crucial. Rooting allows me ultimate control of my phone.

Some of my main reasons (in no particular order) are:
Custom ROMs (although I'm not sure how it works on phones outside of the HD2 )
Ad blockers
Backup/restore abilities (i.e. Titanium Backup)
SetCPU
Market Enabler
A2SD/Link2SD
CF3D
ICS Launchers which can add widgets from the app drawer
Ability to uninstall system apps/bloatware
Generally having full control over my phone and what I do with it
Some of my reasons are
* Custom Roms
* Custom Kernels
* Mods - such as 15 bar toggle e.t.c
* Learn how to theme and cook roms
Excellent extended functionality -- That's what smartphones are for -- FUNCTIONALITY
Titanium Backup, and all the other root apps XD
Breakaway from bloated stock roms -- we WANT SPEED in the custom roms
Updates to the latest OS version -- enjoy the best of Android
That's why I rooted
Only one reason for me: Freedom!
customization
control
superior speed/battery life
less clutter
less intrusive (phoning home)
titanium backup
easy flashing of custom recovery
that said a good oh *bleep* button in case I mess up my phone.
I rooted to install custom ROMS and hopefully get better battery life by getting rid of bloatware. So far much faster, but I'm yet to see battery improvements. Changing kernals is really fun tho.
.for me allways about improving battery life and improving performance with after market mods that the manufacturers don't see as important ie, by debloating and removing all unwanted apps, updating radio firmware to improve cell phone reception, improving kernel optimization and tweaks running new launchers and widgets make to work faster on new os and software versions.

ROOT ? Own your phone
Destroy bloatware! Free up precious internal memory! Overclock that sucker! Tether my laptop! Plus its excellent to do stuff correctly and NOT brick your phone!
if you have to ask question like that, you shouldn't root your device... but for me, the reason why to root is to gain ultimate control over my device, because it is MY device
For me its just a way not to use google account. I think its unacceptable that they would require personal info and collect such on their costumers. Especially since I payed for a SE product and would like atleast to have a File Manager Installed or be able to use calendar WITHOUT sincing it to some random server. Its just that I red the Terms Of Agreement and I don`t agree some times.
Not that it changes anything in the end....
The ladies appreciate it..?
I just want to full control my device..
and I think it is save because we can reset our phone if it is crashed..
Ad free, titanium Backup, droid Wall, div. Roms, backlight notifications
Now with Verizon including work teather with shared everything why root.... I unrooted mine because of that.....

If you don't know what you do its safe not to root your phone. If you delete system files you phone will not start. I have my phone rooted because i am the boss. Not my phone.
