[Q] Updating firmware after rooting/flashing rom - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Bit of a noob question, but before I rooted/flashed custom firmware my stock firmware was 1.54.651.8. At some point I'm going to have to update it, so it works with new roms right? Also, how do I go about updating without loosing my root?

The devs of any rom worth flashing always incorporate the latest stock updates into a new version of their rom.
Most custom roms update monthly. HTC updates... what? Every 6 month?
Just stick with the custom rom you like and rest assured - your not missing out on anything the stock rom may have to offer. But if you feel the need, just RUU back to stock....

Small Sense ROM for updating PRL

I use CyanogenMOD and wanted to update my PRL (since I haven't done that since getting on CyanogenMOD 6+ months ago). I understand the only way to do that is to flash to a Sense based MOD, update, then restore CyanogenMOD back.
So if that information is still correct, what would the lightest, smallest, Sense based mod be right now to do just that? I just want to flash the mod, do a backup of it, then store it for future PRL updates, so I need it as small as possible.
Any suggestions?
As you know theres no way to update your PRL through settings, you will need to download the update and flash it... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883226

That doesn't help me. I know that I can't do it via CM (as I stated in my original post). What I need to know is what Sense based ROM is the smallest. I want to flash a Sense based ROM and then do a backup of that ROM to keep around for future PRL updates rather than having to flash a fresh ROM. Since I want to keep a backup, I'd like it to be small. No extra bloatware at all.
Any suggestions as to the smallest Sense based ROM?
This might be what you're looking for, Its a bare bones Sense Rom. Link below...

Quick question /how-to

Hi there XDA,
Definitely horrible at flashing and jazz, I have a quick question.
I had flashed JellyBeanv3 rom a while back and today I received the 4.1.2 OTA, now I'm wondering if my phone would brick if I updated.
What would the proper steps be to update? Also, would I be better off using CM10 (I hear a lot of good things about it, just don't know what's so special.)
Thanks,
-Mike
You won't brick, although you may lose root.
If you are fine with stock, then just upgrade to the OTA.
If not, then I'd upgrade to CM. They introduced the latest 4.1.2 upgrades in a matter of a couple days, so you're not lagging far behind official releases. CM includes an OTA updater so you can update to the latest nightly pretty easily.
To install CM, follow the directions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1839882
What's "Jellybeanv3"? A custom rom?
An OTA update WILL NOT work on a custom rom.
If it's indeed custom built, I don't understand how you people are EVEN getting the update message.
If OP is on stock rom (no mods, etc) and talking about JZO54K OTA, then just run the update. If not (cwm installed, rooted+modified system files), read this thread.
About CM, do you think so many people love it just because? lol.
Try it yourself. Like reuthermonkey said, read the nightlies thread/first post, flash away.
Jellybeanv3 was a custom rom that came with awesomebeats, was pretty cool.
I decided against upgrading to ota, and went with cm10. Pretty much godlike in my opinion. The colors on this phone have never been more vibrant.

Updating Firmware for Lollipop ROM?

Hello! I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to updating firmware and I've heard that it's really easy to brick your device if you screw it up so I want to ask some questions before I dive in.
From what i've gathered, this is the right place to get the latest firmware and flashing instructions. Do I need to flash the full firmware if I'm not planning on using a stock/Sense ROM? Would it matter either way?
I'm on CM 10.2 now and was thinking about checking out the latest CM 12 nightly or maybe one of the Lollipop GPE ROMs. I don't think I'll be going to a Sense ROM.
P.S. I've had this phone since August 2013 and have never updates the firmware.

HTC has not released a lollipop version of the stock ROM yet, so there is technically no "lollipop firmware" yet. With the most recent firmware which accompanied the 4.4.3 OTA version, you can still run a lollipop ROM but it seems like a lot of people experience errors with them. Maybe it has more to do with bugs in 5.0.x since lollipop has not been out that long yet rather than outdated firmware, i really don't know. But I am on the most recent firmware and had the now infamous "can't send more than 1 SMS per boot" problem, so I rolled back to stock after a week or two. Either way, you are very, very out of date with your firmware. The level of risk associated with updating it probably isn't as high as you have been lead to think. Just follow the commands in the thread you posted exactly. I have done it many times and my phone has never been bricked.
As for your question as to whether or not it matter if you are not using stock or Sense, yes it still does. AOSP ROMs like CM or GPE still are designed to work with the phone's firmware. CM11 or 12 is intended to work with whatever firmware is out by the time the ROM is being compiled.

[Q] [q] Bell OTA + Lollipop + Custom Roms

Hey! I've been spending hours reverting my rom to stock and doing my OTAs to get to lollipop.
My phone is a Bell M8 with S-ON. I am currently up to 4.4.4 and about to do the Lollipop update. I am aware I should do sunshine on 4.4.3 but am broke right now so was just thinking of waiting until it works on Lollipop.
That being said, the current Bell OTA for Lollipop is version 4.20.666.1 (awesome numbers btw) and most roms say I need firmware 4.16.x.x.
My question is, will those roms work properly on this firmware? Or should I go back to 4.4.3 and use sunshine (I am impatient and want lollipop now, but stock roms suck.)
Thanks for the help!
edit: I found this advice in a rom thread
In future Rom releases, you may stick with your region’s firmware as long as that firmware is from the current released base, such as 5.0.1, 5.0.2, etc.
Firmware flashing is not required for every Rom update. Most of the time it is best to remain on your phone’s native firmware for best signal reception, battery life, and overall performance.

So does that mean as long as the rom is the same version 5.0.x that I should be fine?
Ya you should be fine tuning that firmware with the Rom... Can I ask you to also please upload the ota for us ...I've been looking for it all around

Where do I find it I haven't update yet.. I'd you can tell me where it is located I can extract and upload it.
I have a TWRP backup of it. Would that work or probably not since the firmware isn't there.

Should i upgrade to official 4.2 from 4.1?

I just got a One X from a friend and its requesting me to upgrade to Android 4.2 and currently runs Android 4.1.. The reason im asking this is because that i will probably end up flashing a custom rom, but for now ill just stick to the official rom BUT if i upgrade to 4.2 would that make it harder for me to flash a custom recovery and go custom rom?
Update to 4.2. You won't have issues rooting or flashing custom roms.
