Root with TowelRoot - Galaxy Tab 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can I use towelroot to root my device on firmware 4.4.2 KitKat?
I don't know if it can be possible but if it is functional on 4.2.2 then must be 4.4.2 functional with towelroot, too?

Dude it is just easier to just use the rooting toolkit farther down in the forms or use odin

I can't even believe I'm participating in this rediculous quote reply in a thread that is already in the wrong forum. Im not saying the toolkit is hard but are you just plain mental? have you seen how easy it is to root with towelroot? Ive yet to see an easier root method.

If I root with the toolkit, do the binary counter or something else that count, doesn't count?

No way, Odin is easier, u put ur device into download mode then hook it up to the computer and select the right recovery file and click start. What could be easier?

ok the only reason you would ask that is because of keeping a warranty. so what I do is if you want to root/custom rom/binary then use twrp and back up all your custom mods and tweaks and all other apps (before using odin FLASH STACK ROM WILL WIPE ALL DATA(should include binary))then use odin and flash the stock rom, for me that worked. now i dont know a device u have so it might be different. odin might have an option to reset flash counter.

I rooted my sm-t217s on 4.4.2 just today, and it worked.

Hey I just watched a vid on towelroot its much easier!

Yeah Towelroot was a snap. I had a few hiccups afterwards because knox wasn't disabled. So I opened supersu, and it asked if I wanted to disable it. Once I did, everything was fine.

The Tab 3 Firmware doesn't include Knox, does it?
I have tried to root a Tab 3 8.0 WiFi SM-T310 and I can't root it with towelroot. It reboots every time when I click on "make it ra1n".
So why can't towelroot root it?

I didn't see a Knox icon, but supersu detected and disabled it, and I kept getting the shield icon in my notifications panel.
Root is a helluva drug.....

I think I know why towelroot won't root my 8" tab, because the German-Version (DBT) have got a Exynos CPU.
If the developer geohot starts to support the exynos series would be great..

Haven't tried it yet but here a link which has step by step instructions on how to root SGH-T889 running android 4.3.
http://honai-android.blogspot.com/2013/12/how-to-root-galaxy-note-2-t-mobile-sgh.html
Please Note: This method will most likely trip the KNOX/Warranty Bit counter so try it on your own risk.
Rooting is not the same on 4.3.

Yeah, I just ran chainfires method and something odd happened. I have superuser but I can't actually use it. That KNOX BS prevents it from running and issues a security warning that reads "Unauthorized access to a secure area has been blocked tap to learn more" .

This only disables the notifications from KNOX and not the KNOX itself.
I think notifications can be disabled within KNOX settings.

In download mode it showed KNOX was tripped. 'Knox warranty void: 1" I ended up bricking it, which is all the same, I don't like KNOX bs anyway. I spun a good yarn to T-Mobile so I'll have another Note 2 tomorrow hopefully on something below 4.3 lol.

Sorry to hear that, can you elaborate how it got bricked ?
Did you try to downgrade ? Flashing it back to 4.3 worked for S3 phones.
I mean once you are on 4.3 you cannot flash back to an older version (4.1.x) easily. There must be a way via CWM or TWRP.
Some of us can use this information to NOT brick our phones.

So...I decided to take a chance and try to some things on my own, you know, show some initiative. I wont be doing that again and have gained even more respect for what you devs do. Here's the story. I tried to root the 4.3 using chainfires method, after being warned by psycho4us4 that it prolly wouldn't work. It did work, sort of... I had superuser and with root explorer was able to access system files. However, I could not alter or change any of the files. When I attempted to, the explorer would stop responding. It's also important to note I was never asked to grant SU permissions. That dialogue was replaced with the notification bar warning (apparently issued by KNOX) that an app was trying to access a restricted area of the device (lol) which I ignored. So now I have my Note II with SU and KNOX tripped showing warranty void 1 in the download mode So I'm thinking "Ok I'll flash back to MD1 with ODIN" Into download mode I go and start up ol ODIN I load the firmware and let it run. After going through the entire process it fails at the end. Now I have the Keis firmware failed screen....a brick.

I'm having trouble deciding which route I want to go. Don't know if I want to use the link with the Warranty Safe Root way(have already cooked the rom per it's directions) or if I want to go the cf-auto root way. I don't know anything about the vroot method. Any thoughts or insight would be appreciated.
I thought I'd be clever too and do a factory reset from the phone and it hung on the tmo boot screen, but I ended up downloading the stock 4.3 tar file and ODIN back to 4.3 and it works again.
The Chainfire root way is definitely not the way to go as it does not work.
Going to try the vroot way to see if I can get root back.
With vroot download supersu before starting them make sure as soon as the phone boots up after rooting open supersu update binary and let it delete the other manager.

There isn't one. All links were removed from xda because some suspicion of the program as a virus. If you followed the link I posted you would see that. Now there are tons of positive reports and I used it. My antivirus didn't report it either. However, if you feel comfortable using it you will need to Google it

[Q] Root and OTA update

Hello Guys,
My note 2's warranty gets over this month. I was thinking of rooting now using kingo as it seems the easiest method for a noob like me. Can you someone tell me if OTA updates will be problem after the root? Will a be able to get it as KitKAt is just around the corner?
Moreover is my decision to stick with kingo correct?
Appreciate any feedback. Thanks in advance.

No, buddy . After rooting you cannot recieve OTA updates . It will say that ur device has been modified . You can root manually rather using kongo . And when kitkat will arrive then just go to sammobile firmware page and download the firmware and flash through odin

Thanks Ashraf bhai. I was under the impression that if i dont freeze anything i can get the OTA update easliy. If thats not the case i think i will wait for kitkat and then root as this is definitely not my cup of tea.
Flashing through odin wipes the phone clean and i am not much of a back up guy.

If u have stock recovery u can do OTA even after root... Do some changes before OTA
1.Install xposed framework

then check for OTA & u can downlad OTA

What is your build no. presently?
You do not need to worry about OTA update as you can receive it with the method mentioned above.

The easisest y to root would be Cf-autoroot. if you are NOT Knoxed..!!
Else the best possible way is to flash a pre rooted rom.. It makes life easy..! Dont run away from flashing bhai..!!

I have my guide but that involves flashing a custom recovery.
But that is if you want to change your ROM.
That method works 100 percent.
If you want to stay on the stock rom use CF-Autoroot.

There is no method to root without tripping knox on NA1 and ML4.
But you can get ota updates even after tripping knox.
And you will have problems with root access on stock rom because of knox.
If you like touchwiz head over to DN3 ROM. I use it as a daily driver and it's rock stable.

Edit: After rooting stock rom if you delete knox apps then you cannot get OTA updates because your system partition has been modified.

We would love you to stay on stock..! But the moment you get into a habit of playing around with things you will not go back..!
I am using Kitkat since 1 month..! No issues at all..!! Before OTA comes to you we get OTA on xda LOL..!!
Life is really fun being here.. You can guess that by the numbers of post i have made..!
I have used Note 3 features.. S5 features..! SHOWOFF..!! Being a punjabi that comes naturally to me..!!
YOu need to see your download counter in order to check if you are Knoxed..! even if you are does not matter,,

Root by flashing a Pre-rooted Rom that has an old bootloader IF that works ..! The max you can do is SOft brick which is easly recoverable..
And then explore the world or ROMS..!!

by deleting data i mainly meant the installed apps and stuff. Contacts and all is a minor issue as they are synced over google anyway.

[Q] Should I purchase the Wifi Note 10.1?

I'm coming from a Nexus 10 which is dying soon (bad motherboard) and was looking at getting a Wifi 32gb Note 10.1. But I have a few questions for the seasoned pros here :cyclops:
How smoothly does the Note 10.1 run on the latest firmware? (I'm assuming Kitkat)
If the stock firmware isn't silky smooth, is there anything I can do to fix it?
Are all the HMP problems with the Exynos 5420 fixed yet?
Any way to root the tablet without voiding warranty?

smooth. have noticed no hangups or stutters or anything like that — i gotta say that TouchWiz in KK has been much less crappy than i thought it would be. YMMV depending on your apps. that said, i'm coming from an Asus TF700, which was a complete POS, and the Note 10.1 (2014) has been a dream in comparison.

install Apex (what i did) or Nova as your launcher. and/or root and freeze apps via Titanium.

they weren't problems so much as frustrations that Samsung decided in its wisdom not to enable it for this tablet. it runs fine out of the box with KK without HMP.
Oh and will rooting void the warranty?
Yes. Rooting will cause the KNOX bit to change. KNOX bit is detecting any non KNOX kernels. And once you do that, it fires.
But we are still not sure whether it will cause warranty issues. IMHO It's just a safe assumption right now. I am happy without rooting my device.

can you please share the method of rooting our note 10.12014 edition without trippin knox?
For the Sanpdragon variant SM-P605 there is a method called de la vega.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2501700
Reportedly they have been able to do it without tripping the KNOX bit. The method was ported from Note 3 to Note 10.1-14 (605).
But for Exynos variant i.e. WiFi version P600. The method is Chain Fire's AutoRoot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2490805
P.S. This will TRIP the KNOX bit.

Are you saying Kingo Root doesn't trip the Knox fuse? I have been looking hard for a way of doing this and so far seen absolutely nothing, here or anywhere else, to suggest that this is possible. This thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538345 suggests it doesn't even work much less do so without blowing the fuse.
Please elaborate.

Hi yes, I have rooted both my devices and can go into download mode and counter says Ox0 ,,the boot loader is locked,,so i am still on stock ROM, I don't have Safe strap on either,,,I really have no need for flashing other Roms since I get 3-4 days of battery out of my Note 3. I believe if you "flash" another ROM its possible it might a e fuse ,,..I could be wrong ..

I assumed you have the P600 wifi based on your signature. What KK rom build version you were using when you rooted your device? With the D2(latest) Kingo not even work!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53135814 .At this time, there is no way to root the p600 without triping the knox counter.

This was exactly my understanding as well. I'd love to be able to root mine without blowing the fuse and I don't care about installing a different ROM, I just want root access.
There must be some misunderstanding here because this is literally the only reference I have found on the web in six months of looking, to being able to root a P600 without blowing the fulse.

You are quite right. That is disappointing but not surprising.
Kingo Root tries to root my 4.3 Note10 but fails.
I had to CF root thru Odin and knox is 0x1.
Kingo Root did root my 4.4 Note3 but knox is 0x1.

Towelroot or CF-Auto-Root with 4.4.2 OTA?

I've got a friend with an AT&T Note 2 with the latest 4.4.2 OTA. He wants to root so he can backup and transfer everything to a new device. I'm assuming towelroot won't do the trick since it's an Exynos CPU, but will Chainfire's auto root still work? I'm assuming Knox is on the newest OTA and wasn't on it originally when CFAR was released. I searched, but I don't see anything recent about rooting, and I just want to be relatively assured of not bricking him. Any help is appreciated.

Towel root will NOT work. Cf auto root will. It's the method I used. You may need to manually install the latest super user and after.
As stated above. . Use CF....g

Now just install supersu from the play store and then go to the app after you download it and if it says to update it do it and you'll be fine

Many people have encountered that problem.
here's the solution
marckusdavis said:
Sorry, I need to make sure I fully understand this too. So you have an SGH-i317 and were rooted. You installed the OTA update to 4.4.2 which unrooted you. Then you ran CF-AutoRoot and were able to successfully re-root on 4.4.2?
UPDATE:
Well, after reading another post where this worked, I decided to give it a try. It seemed to work, but then I get the message "Unfortunately SuperSU has stopped". I tried the solution using ES File Explorer to reinstall SuperSU.apk to no avail and there is no "UPDATE" button in Google Play, only OPEN, ENABLE or DISABLE so I can't update the binary. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
UPDATE 2:
Got it working, sort of! Since rooting seemed to work, but the old binary for SuperSU kept stopping, I downloaded the updated SuperSU zip file from here and then used ES File Explorer to look into the zip and find and run/install the Superuser.apk file. That works, but it does not appear to survive a reboot, so for each reboot I have to redo this process. Good enough work-around for now though as I'm sure there will be a complete solution down the road.
UPDATE 3 (probably final):
Was able to use the "Clean up for reinstallation from Google Play" option in the SuperSU settings. After reboot, Google Play then gave me the option to Install SuperSU which I did. It now survives reboot and it also, FINALLY, disabled the stupid Knox (which from what I read, was the cause of all of these problems in the first place. You have to be quick with the fingers though because as soon as SuperSU gave the option to disable Knox, a second later Knox closed it. I had to fire up SuperSU again and then click the disable Knox OK button IMMEDIATELY to kill it). I'm a happy, rooted Note 2 user on KitKat now! Hope all of this info. is helpful to someone else.
