Hi all i've been eyeing on the nexus for ...hmmm 6months or so ? i loved it's screen and m minimalistic design , after consulting my dad a few days ago he agreed to get one for me after my exams so i've done my fair share of research on the phone and i doubt it will fit my criteria for a phone ....so here are my worries
1. Transferring files from computer , i heard Nexus don't support usb mass storage , is that true? i have a ton of music waiting to be sent to my phone when i get it and if it can't transfer via computer then i might find a phone elsewhere ( if it can't use usb mass storage how do you sent roms to your phone )
2. Volume for me music and video sharing with my friends are very important blasting songs from the speaker or watching a funny video but the dilemma is the speaker is horrible i heard from a fair share of articles and videos which i am a little worried
3. Battery , many reviews have been criticising the nexus's battery saying that it hardly lasts a day for them and the 1750mAh battery just ain't enough is that true ?
4. Camera , 5 megapixels ....is it enough? i've seen some sample shots and they are far than impressive ....the quick capture ability is pretty cool to be honest
this phone is a major buy for me since i've been eyeing on it for so long and it cost quite a lot ....
oh and here are my criteria for a android smartphone
1. Speed , the processor should be quick enough for everyday use and some decent gaming
2. 3G and 4G not needed , being only 17 i cant afford 3G so connectivity ain't really important for me
3. Community, i love discussing problems , exchanging roms with my android smartphone something nexus excels at! ( i love miui JB!! )
4. Uniqueness , my phone must stand out from the crowd , looking special and eye catching the minimalistic design and it's rarity in my area makes the nexus an ideal candidate
5. Price the nexus has dropped a total of RM700 since the day it reached malaysian shores the price was originaly RM2099( 675USD ) and now it's RM1300 ( 418 USD ) which really made my father consider getting it
so is the nexus perfect for me ? or should i look somewhere else?
1. you can still transfer files but its in MTP mode, which is abit like how you transfer files from digital cameras. its abit weird but it works just fine most of the time.
2. audio not too bad and you can get custom kernels to boost the audio for you if you would root your phone.
3. battery is fine, lasts a day easily for me, about 4 hours of on screen time on average.
4. camera is decent. not the best out there, but the quick snapping makes up for that and they still look nice
and the phone meets all your other criteria grab the google play version with is 3G only and you're set
Just a thought... if you're using your phone a lot to blast music and video to multiple friends you may want to just spend a couple bucks and get some speakers you can plug in. The volume is alright on the Gnex but you are not going to be hosting a dance party with it.
I noticed you said you didn't want 3g or 4g. Check with your carrier to make sure they won't require you to have a data package with the nexus.

to be honest i don't know what are carriers ... all i know is there are ads in the papers with nexus price rather cheaply but have to be paid back at a monthly rate , anyways i am getting my nexus straight from a retialer , going to the shop and just buy it
Speaker sound is low even with kernel tweaks. Luckily I usually hook it to external speakers.
Camera is not good. Only takes good photos when outside in sunlight. I wouldn't say its about it being 5 megapixels (there are plenty good 5 mega pixel cameras out there), but about the flash and camera lense. There is almost zero shutter lag though, which is a plus. All in all I hate the camera on this device. One of the worst cameras I have had.
Software is great, development is great, battery is great on my GSM Nexus, performance is great with Jelly Bean.
Camera, screen tinge and grain (can be sort of fixed with root and screen adjustments), and speaker are all below average IMO.
Zero shutter lag feature was removed by Google in one of the latter updates. You might be able to do it with a custom ROM, but if you want to stay on the latest stock you can forget about that feature. Apart from that the camera is alright but it's nothing special.
Battery life depends on use. Since you are planning to not use 3G you should be able to get a pretty good battery life out of it.

so u are a malaysian? i bought mine on april for rm1900 and now it drops till rm1200++...but i never regret..this phone is just awesome...but trying to buy a case in malaysia is a pain in the ass...i bought my sgp neo hybrid case online for rm95 plus postage..

It really depends on if you are going to buy a GSM phone or CDMA phone. I prefer the GSM Nexus over the Verizon or Sprint one. The Nexus would be the best phone to get for development because its easy to root and has a ton of roms and developments. But it is an older phone and there is a new Nexus coming out soon, so development may slow down a tad.
I don't really know what other phone would be a good alternative because I don't have another one. People seem to like the GSM Samsung Galaxy S2, S3 and Note.
I really liked HTC phones in the past, and they usually have great cameras, but they have been kind of iffy lately. Still the One X might be worth checking out. There is no sdcard or removable battery on that phone though.
Nexus is one of the best IMO but has some faults that I will make sure my next phone doesn't have.

if u buy the phone straight from a retailer,there is no need to choose to have data plan or not. In malaysia, it all depends on the carrier(sim kad,celcom,digi,maxis). And u will get the gsm version, malaysian always use gsm.
**Be noted that first time turning on the phone,quickly(really quick) turn off data usage under setting or use a sim kad with no kredit, if not, it will auto connect to the net and ur kredit will be used A LOT!
1. You wont notice any lag at all with this phone. Even if there is, it rarely happen and it dont lag much.
2. The battery is great, u wont be using any 3g, so the battery will probably last u the whole day. My average battery life:
Wifi on: onscreen time-around 4-5 hours
3g on: onscreen time-around 3-4 hours
**this is onscreen time, however,the idle time with this phone is amazing, i never have to worry if i go out with the battery not full.
I wont recommend an S2, the speaker,camera and hardware is almost the same as nexus, but more laggier. My friend has one, and his phone always hang and lag like an xperia x8(no custom rom). Plus, S2 price is RM1300+, why pay more for a crappier phone when u can have a better one at a lower price. Im not being biased here but this is my observation..

my dad said he will buy the nexus a month ago but he forgot ( he works from 11 morning to 2 am ) and i don't wanna bother him so i stopped asking but lately during my dad's birthday he said he will but it after my trial hehe! so i am really hyped right now!! still my dad won't let me use 3G and i don't really want it since it's expensive and will further burden my dad , still the nexus have a 16 gb internal yes?

Oh man, I just got back from Malaysia. Should have somehow psychically contacted me before, and could have saved you some money and met a new friend! I was in KL and Kuching :<
RM 1900 to RM 1200? That is crazy (considering that an average worker makes like 800-2000RM a month or less?)

lol...before i bought it i was thinking of waiting for the s3..but then i was impatient and couldnt wait any longer and choose the gnex..never regreted by decision..haha... and nothing in malaysia is cheap

Who here switched from HTC One to the Optimus G pro and didnt wanna look back?
Ive had my HTC One since AT&T first got it and had a charger port issue on it and they replaced it and each replacement after my 1st one which had the charger port issue has been crap, I have had 4 htc ones in less than a week from warranty all have had build quility issues. well I`m gonna pick me up a Optimus G Pro today.
I have 3 issues I`m afraid though.
1. Is afriad it will be too big. I owned the Note 1 forever and the Note 2 for several months but I havent had the note 2 since march or april.
2. Wifi Tethering I have the unlimated plan and there doesnt seem to be an international rom I can just flash like I did on my HTC One
3. AT&T`s 4G data indicater! I cant stand it! I`d perfer it to be 3G,H,H+, 4G, or LTE Not 4G or 4GLTE I hate it anyway to change that? On HTC I had to change the CID. On Samsung I just had to change the build Prop.

Size won't be an issue. Its surprisingly comfortable to hold. I've had the Note 2 and One. You won't really know the difference in size. Looks big doesn't feel like it.
As for tethering and data icon....development is in progress so you May get your wishes granted soon.

Actually the tethering is already working, there's a whole thread on it in the General section.
This phone is great, probably the best choice I've ever made. I have the 5gb ATT plan so WiFi tethering wasn't a big deal for me.

just unboxed it gotta get a case and screen protector online now store had nothing.
Think Im GONNA LOVE THIS PHONE!!!!!! Rooted and got into the build prop changed a few things and was sadly disappointed that changing those few things didnt give me tethering nor did it change the signal bars and data icons to international, But... I did a reset on the phone and BAM the build prop changes took affect! Awesome!
I know have Network Selection Mobile Networks to change to WCDMA Only, GSM, and LTE only !
I know have 4 total Signal Bars Like the Korean version and same goes for the data indicators I now see 3G at the top!
and Tethering works without having to do that SQL script or whatever it is.

Never owned the HTC One, but did quite a bit of research into it before I ended up going with the G Pro. I'll admit that having owned the original Note is what drew me to the G Pro, but there are other reasons I believe it is a superior phone.
From the moment I bought it, I've loved every aspect of it, from its size, to build quality, to performance, to stock Rom, to features, etc. The QRemote app is awesome, the LED-laced home button is even more awesome, the camera takes excellent pictures and video, the "plastic" construction feels like a whole new type of material after coming from Samsung devices; it feels very secure (as long as you don't need to constantly remove the back cover). Battery life is great too.
A few things you have to get used to though:
"Temperature" issues. It doesn't get hot, per say, but it has a built-in safeguard that turns the screen brightness down during any kind of resource-intensive activity, like GPS usage, game playing, or video watching, and good luck turning the brightness way up while doing that (there are ways of disabling this safeguard, but I personally trust the engineers that there is a reason it is implemented and I won't mess with it).
Battery life, while generally great, is susceptible to quick drainage. Namely, GPS usage drains it scarily fast, but that may just be an aspect of all android phones. However, since the battery normally lasts so long on the G Pro, the quick drain from a quick car ride using navigation is all the more noticeable.
Android development for the G Pro isn't anywhere close to where the One is at. THAT BEING SAID, as of a few hours ago, an unofficial port of CM 10.1 was ported to our device, and I expect once all the bugs are worked out it will give a nice jump-start to the development of other Roms. Additionally, the stock Rom is excellent to begin with, and by far the smoothest and most fully-featured stock Rom I've ever used on any Android phone. Period.
The screen is very sensitive. Again, I don't own the One so I can't comment on how it compares, but the one thing that bothers me the most about my phone is that whenever it is in my pocket and I get a notification of some sort, the screen turns on, and somehow the slight movement of the phone in my pocket causes it to call 911, text all my friends, change the brightness, enable NFC, open the calculator, etc. etc. It's so bad that I'm forced to have a pattern-unlock on it, not because I want the security, but because I don't want my phone unlocking by itself and wreaking havoc in my pocket. Even with that enabled, however, there's still the "Emergency call" button I can't get rid of on the lockscreen, so it still occasionally dials out to the police from my pants.
Keep in mind, I really had to reach a little to come up with all of the above "drawbacks". It is my favorite phone I've ever seen or used or owned, and were it not for its maddening sound quality issues over bluetooth with my car system (more than likely related to Android 4.1.2 and not the phone itself, as I can't find anybody else having my issues with the G Pro specifically), I would probably not feel the need to even mess with the stock Rom on it. In fact, the bluetooth thing caused me to reconsider the One, but once you get used to the slightly larger frame of the G Pro (the bezels are very thin, so the frame is relatively thin and light for the ginormous screen you're getting), you really don't want to go back to anything smaller.
Hopefully I didn't confuse you more.. the G Pro is the right way to go. No phone is perfect, the One is an impressive looking device, but as of right now, the G Pro is as close to perfection as it's gonna get.

Yepp +1 on no phone is perfect But the HTC One people had issues of calling 911 etc in there pocket lol.
I came from the HTc one... The upper boom speaker, kept going out.. (2 phones) and besides that.. It felt too tiny.. Battery life was a joke...IMO.. This phone is great

I got my S4 stolen last night, and will be looking at getting a phone to replace it. I was going to just do the 12 monthly payments for another S4 and call it a day. But the price is still 650-700 bucks, so I started looking at other options. The LG Optimus Pro looks AMAZING, and I found an unlocked international one on Amazon for 480 with free shipping.
My question is whether or not the unlocked phone would work on Verizon. I don't want to buy this phone online and wait for the shipping, just to have it not work with Verizon's 4G. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This phone looks incredible.

That's too bad. So even though it's unlocked and has a SIM slot for 4G, it doesn't have the right radios?

Switched from HTC One and so far so good.
I prefer many aspects on this phone over htc eg bigger screen, led notification, battery life, ext memory, replaceable battery however there some aspects which I definitely prefer about htc one eg brighter screen, LCD 3 screen, superior aluminium build, BOom speaker sound(miss this most), support development, smoothness and lag free.
UI mix feelings. Compared to htc one lg does lag.
Would I switch back hmmm probably not its got more going for it then not.
Well, I currently have both. I find myself wanting to grab the LG og pro over the ONE. Mind u, I've had the ONE since it dropped. The LG is amazing for watching videos!! I like HTC sense 5 keyboard better, I love HTC ONE build quality. I love the 5.5 inch screen on the LG, I like how it offers sd card slot, and the ui is tight! Right down to the lockscreen. And I also like how I can write on the screen if needed, which surprisingly enough, I do use it a lot.
I can't pick one. I'm tore between the 2.

Got my HTC One in April.
When G Pro was released in mid July, I trade in my HTC One for it and never look back too!
I love the high performance and big screen of this phone as well as its price. It is worth every cent!
As for UI, no one beats HTC Sense UI yet!
However, let's hope that the upcoming 4.2 update will reduce the lag of 4.1 and makes it even a better phone than it is already now!

This is a very negative thing imo. I find it ridiculous that they made this phone with no option to disable the display from turning on for every text message received.
-I emailed LG about the issue and of course all I got was the usual "your feedback will be passed on" stuff. But hopefully a future update will fix this.
-The way I dealt with it was by installing Go SMS Pro. It even has a cool little pop-up window of its own that lets you drag your text message around across any screen. Pretty nifty.
Otherwise I absolutely love this phone. I'm coming from a 2-year-old HTC Inspire 4G (laugh it up lol). It now feels like a toy in comparison

Luckily all it takes to fix it is downloading one of the custom ROMs and, if you so desire, flashing the qremote app onto that ROM.
I just switched from an HTC One yesterday.
I had no issues at all... I just kept thinking of and wanting a larger screen phone that wasn't a Samsung.
After a few weeks on CL, someone contacted me about my ad (straight trade) and said they were interested. They had the OG Pro and wanted a smaller screen phone. The person was upfront about the condition and admitted that there was a a couple of nicks on the corners.
The person wanted my One so bad, that he offered $100 on top of the trade! Also got a smart cover too plus all accessories.
I wish I would have kept the ear buds though.

I dont want to spend a lot of cash on cell phones, so considering the prices being reduced, is G3 still a good option? The phones looks absolutely amazing.
the G3 is definitely a very good option especially with the really high quality case with the cover that you can usually get bundled with it. Overall very good phone and I highly recommend it.

Not to mention it's one of the cheapest flagships available, and the camera is great. I bought a Nexus 6, but returned it 24 hours later, there are simply too many features that I immediately knew I would miss on my G3, and the G3 screen was light years better.
Love my G3 had it for a few days now and its great plus when more roms dtart to come out i feel itll be perfect ??

Just picked up the G3 on AT&T a few days ago after dropping and destroying my Nexus 4. So far its been great. Definitely an upgrade in the screen, camera, and battery department. The battery has been amazing so far plus I picked up a spare battery kit so now I'm never plugged into the wall...something I was used to doing on a daily basis with my N4. My only dilemna with this phone is that it's a carrier branded phone and not stock android. Luckily it's rootable thanks to some awesome devs so removing AT&T bloat is not an issue. As for not being stock android, LG's skin is pretty light with some added features that I actual welcome. A few features that have stood out to me so far are the ability to hide the nav buttons on a per app basis(thanks LG), the unintrusive popup for incoming calls, and doubletap2wake and sleep. Coming from someone in the same situation I would say do it.

I did the move and its destroys the n4 in every aspect....
However i am very unsatisfied with lgui being very laggy battery isnt the best of all either camera is actually pretty good speakers are fair also but if i could i would go with the htc one m8 in a heartbeat ! Better looking phone better software better speaker etc...

Absolutely a great buy! I love mine! I recommend it to anyone looking for a skinned Android. The hardware is great in every way. The screen it top quality, the battery is good, the camera is really good, one of the phones with the most RAM, a up to date processor, and really good build quality considering it is plastic. The only one single hardware issue I have with it is the speaker being on the back. Don't get me wrong, it is a really good speaker. But with the speaker being on the back instead of the bottom or front, it can easily get muffled when laying on it's back. Specifically when it i laying on it's back on a soft surface like a bed. But like I said its still a really good speaker for a back speaker. It is just a very well rounded phone.
Amazing battery life, superb laser focus camera, 2k display consistent dev support. Need I say more?
I had samsung s4 s5 sony z2 and z3 and nexus 5 and htc m8 and iphone 6 for me g3 was the best ..camera very good and the screen awesome and the battery not bad it gives me 5 hours sot.. I didnt try n6 so i cant tell you which one is better
Short answer: Yes
Longer yes: Yes, after dealing with the Nokia Lumia 930, 5 or 6 (now I can't remember) defective Xperia Z2, I'm now on the G3. Very good phone. Battery life FAR Superior than the Lumia, and just right below the Z2. Considering it's handling a larger screen and a higher pixel screen, I'd say it's awesome. I am a light user with about 1-2 hours of SOT a day and I go home with 65-70% every day. So it can get me through a day SOOOOO easily! Highly recommended. Camera is great, I have the 32GB/3GB version and I don't have lags. But as I mentioned before, I'm a light user. I only use my phone for pictures, bittorrent sync (folders between desktops and such), and messaging (Line, Whatsapp, Email, Forums). That's it. I know, the device is overkill for my usage, but still! I'm very happy . I'd recommend it over any other phone. The only device I could possibly recommend more is the Nexus 6 or the Note 4. I don't like Samsung's cartoony UI. And the N6 is REALLY expensive! It's 700 euros while the G3 was 450 euros when I got it. So, I can't complain!

Does 32 gb make a difference compared to the 16gb, keeping in mind the extra 1gb ram in 32 gb version? Also the quick circle case - is this a must have accessory for G3?
Yeah!! I just bought my g3 two weeks ago, i had a oneplus before i purchased this. It feels similar to the 1+ but with the g3 the screen is better, it has a removable battery, micro sd slot and its cheap compared to some of the other flagships. Id recommend getting it

In the benchmarks the difference is very tiny. My mate has a 16gb version with 2gb and compared to my 32gb, and when youre actually using the phones side by side the different isnt even noticeable. The 16gb is also at least £30 cheaper here in the uk.

The phone is awesome! It's as powerful (and beautiful) as phones much more expensive than this. It's a shame that AOSP is not well supported yet, but the power and performance of AOSP can be acheived on LG's own rom if you know how to tweak android, both in performance and looks.

I believe the biggest difference is when you multitask - redraws on the screen, how many apps can be left open without having to hibernate them (the system of course), wtc.
Regardless, I believe 3GB ram will future-proof it as much as possible. It has a good camera, 3GB of RAM in my version, as well as a nice screen. I think it will be a relevant phone for at least a year or two. But as with everything in the tech world... These things get outdated rather quickly.
If you're worried about buying a device that would last you for years and years (with updates I mean), maybe the Nexus 6 would be best as it will be covered for a WHILE by Google. It's absolutely the most advanced HW (processor, memory, screen) so it will be updated for a while!
If you want a G3 now, get it right now. Thanks to the open sourcing efforts of someone, LG's likely to close down the bootloader exploit in the next couple of days.
Unless you like your freedom restricted, in which case, buy a G3 whenever you want.
A very good buy the only phone in my opinion would be the note 4 to actually consider, with that said it also is the easiest root and boot right now with great support from the developers, hands down top three phone until next summer when we'll be asking each other the same question.
The upgrade from the Nexus 4 to the G3 is worth it in every way. I've had my G3 for several months now and it is a great phone.

However, at the end of the day each phone has its advantages and plus points and drawbacks and you need to align your requirements with these stregnths.
So ive had a lot of questions from friends and family about my S7 Active; lots of rumors and false info too. Ask me anything.
UPDATE - Tried old AT&T 'phone' APN settings that worked with my S4 for tethering, they do not work on S7 Active, even with tethering provisioning disabled.
The camera is excellent, has approximately 11-11.5 stops of dynamic range (in RAW, obviously), and the OIS is fantastic. Very sharp (again in RAW) optics as well; about up there with my ancient Nikon D300 with the excellent 18-200VR lens attached in terms of sharpness, BARELY less dynamic range, and the OIS works just as well as the Nikon VR lenses i own; highly impressed actually. VERY good low light, very low noise and no discernable noise pattern. I have not shot anything in JPEG; I usually drag a BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera with a Panasonic Lumix OIS 12-35 f2.8 lens around as well as my Nikon D300 with assorted stabilized zooms and prime optics as well, as i shoot and film everything in RAW (i filmed and shot ads, corp videos, music videos, etc professionally for several years). The S7 Active does NOT shoot RAW video, but one might be able to downsample 4k footage to a decent bitrate 1080p with very good results and much higher bitrates to play with. Dynamic range is limited in JPEG from what ive seen, although HDR more works pretty decent for a cell phone, in both video and photo modes. OIS is ALWAYS on, and AF tracking works pretty good; about the same as 3D Tracking on the Nikon D300, just a hair slower. AF is fast and accurate, nowhere near DSLR's, but WAY faster than most phones, and WAY faster and more accurate than 'Focus' push on the Blackmagic Pocket cam, but thats to be expected from a camera you usually rig up and manually pull focus on anyways.
Tethering is natively accessible in the stock ROM, i have an (ancient) grandfathered unlimited data plan through AT&T, and i have full access to APN information and settings, and am wondering if tethering may be enabled natively with the stock ROM. I have disabled all bloatware (via paid app), tweaked and tested it out since launch day; it really does easily last about 30 hours with moderate use once tweaked; with most useful options enabled (even S-voice, NFC, Always-On Display and GPS). I also have access to a totally vanilla, unmodified/untweaked S7 Active that i bought for my parents (coming from a launch day AT&T Sammy S3) to compare with; GSAM battery stats etc, for a wholistic 'Out Of Box' vs tweaked comparison.
Ideally, and mostly for app/settings backup/misc tweaks, id like to see the S7a rooted, but i dont feel its entirely needed, all things considered. Mine is now pending SIM unlock via AT&T (obviously) and i have all bloatware disabled, greenified, and tweaked for even better battery life as well as a simple, smooth, one page launcher/one page dock to keep things nice, neat and clean.
I upgraded from a rooted/ROMed/SIM unlocked Galaxy S4 with an ancient S4 Goldeneye Int'l ROM that i heavily modified, only because i kept getting SIM NOT INSTALLED errors and GPS refused to lock on after i dropped it (for only the second time i might add, after 3 years), with an Anker 5200Mah battery/cover, and i absolutely love it. Being able to rinse it off without fear and let it get bumped about is a relief; i really took great care to keep my old S4 in excellent shape and not damage it. For the first time, i bought a case (TPU) and screen protector, as i intend to keep it for at least 3 years; same as the S4; i just dont plan to baby it, as i bike, kayak, am active in motorsports, horseriding, camping, skydiving, and just about anything else i can do. Normally, i would stuff my S4 into a ziplock with paper towels or foam around it when doing anything 'risky'; its nice to have a phone thats decently durable again; my first phone was a Nokia 5165; it survived being backed over by my ancient 1983 Mazda RX-7, having the antenna chewed on for hours by a bored German Shepard, as well as thrown down a staircase by a crazy high school ex-girlfriend; i missed its rugged durability, though not the ex'es mood swings, though i am far more careful now, both with my phones and romantic choices.
I have been modding phones since WinMo 5.0 and Pineapple for iPhone 3G; from the HTC Hermes/AT&T 8525, HTC 8925 TyTN II/Kaiser, iPhone 3G, Moto Atrix 4g/Olympus, Sammy S3 and Sammy S4; ROMs, add-ons, hacks, tethering, misc tweaks, and all means of assorted risky business to make my mobile better suited to my lifestyle and what i want out of it. I travel a lot for work, sport, and vacations.
This appears to be the first fully featured, ruggedized flagship with no compromises (aside from locked to GSM and initially via AT&T only), but otherwise i have found no real faults. I prefer plastics and rubber over glass and metal; they tend to last longer and survive far better than pretty/elegant/unique metal/glass designs. I paid for it outright, and AT&T kindly sent me the SIM unlock code 2 days after i requested it, for free, as i am travelling to France, Greece, and Russia shortly to visit family and friends. I had a few friends who have had S4, S5, and S6 Actives and loved them, although 2 did manage to crack the screens dropping them. Based on recent youtube stuff, i cant see that happening as frequently with the S7 Active due to the plastic laminated screen, though it will scratch easier.
I will not attempt to test its durability, so dont ask. Plenty of youtube and misc reviews do that and far more; i think its kind of useless, redundant, and wasteful to intentionally subject anything to needless duress just to 'test' out its capabilities, so please dont ask about that. Anything else is a total go; from adoptable storage to wifi and APN testing, i am totally game.
UPDATE
just to clarify some specs, the screen is actually a laminate of polycarbonate plastic on top of Gorilla Glass 4, so while it is much improved in terms of shatter resistance, it is MUCH more prone to scratches, i highly recommend a glass screen protector so you dont scratch up the polycarb screen. I bought a SuperShieldz 2 pack for $8 that works great. the laminate plastic is NOT removable, so once scratched, its there permanently. A cheap case isnt a bad idea either, i bought a clear Cimo TPU cover for $8 for the hell of it.
I have never broken a screen yet, but i had dropped my phones a few times, never used screen protectors or cases/covers either, but figured for a few bucks, considering im much more into kayaking, hiking, biking, and skiing now (funny how more income=more toys and more fun), why the hell not? its a big device as is; but i have been consistently seeing 30 hours of battery life between charges, which is enough to get me through 2 days of moderate to heavy use in areas with terrible signal and no wi-fi.
Adoptable storage really isnt needed; it CAN be done, but there's no going back besides a factory reset if you want things to work properly. I tried it for 3 days, and eventually reset and went back to external portable storage, and transferred all apps, data, pics, etc to ExtSD as well as scripted an auto transfer of all videos, pics, downloads, etc from internal to external storage nightly onto the 200GB microSD card i bought. Also, im paranoid about wearing out the micro USB port as i did (twice) with my S4, so i bought a Samsung Fast Wireless Charger. Its just as fast as the regular, wired fast charger you get in the box, plus its basically just a tilted disc cradle with a Fast Charger plugged into it; same cable and power brick as the S7 Active charger you get in the box. I bought a second, black one i intend to hack down and stealth install into the center console of my Mazda RX-8 above the transmission tunnel behind the shifter so i can hide the wires.

Can you extract Activity Zone Apk from system? You don't need root permission to copy. I want to know if it is possible to run on regular S7.

The easiest and cleanest way without root is to utilize Package Disabler Pro in the Google Play store, and disable 'Gallery'. You can also enable private mode on the folders or albums you dont want to see (i did this to avoid seeing ad based albums, system albums, as well as album covers for music that i have on a 200GB MicroSD card).

The activity button is awesome to have actually; its why i went for the S7 Active over the regular S7; programmable to 3 different apps (short press, double press, long press, or you can disable them individually). So, will at&t update this phone with all the (limited) updates samsung provides? And if we were to get root access, will we be able to install the roms for s7?

Easy tether pro works flawlessly for me. I also use a vpn so att hopefully have a harder time telling I'm tethering

There are tethering apps and VPN options, but i havent tried them out just yet. Tethering with the rooted/unlocked/ROM'ed S4 was a quick launch button away, and was awesome because i could manage portfolios for clients right on their own computer or tablet at a golf course or at a race track or wherever. my clients LOVED when i did that for them lol.
I dont REALLY need it anymore as i switched careers and only hold majority stake in my brokerage, and no longer deal with clients regularly, and am taking summer and fall off for adventures, but ill look into it as eventually ill want to use my laptop or ipad again somewhere without wifi.

The ROM appears to be different, is activity zone and activity button functionality all built in. I doubt we will get root access, frankly, but i dont think its really needed, once i have a solution worked out for tethering i'll be quite happy.

As for Gear VR, it WOULD work, its the physical size of the device that is the main constraint, although a buddy modified his VR to work with it. I have no interest in VR so havent bothered. Ill ask him to send some pics.

The problem is... I can't get even a full day! I found Android System sucking >30% of the battery, is this something happening also in your device?
Unfortunately I couldn't find any battery analyzer that will break down the drain by package, so I always have Android System and Android OS as the mayor battery offenders...

No, Android System is closer to 15% and thats with literally EVERYTHING turned on (GPS, wifi, NFC, Bluetooth etc); with it stripped down and all excess services (google app, svoice, etc) its closer to 8%.
Try backing up apps, install GSam battery monitor (not root version), and let it run for 2-3 days to figure out whats eating your battery. Also check out Apk Disabler Pro for Samsung; i'll post the list of disabled services from mine if you like. Aside from that, some clever work in Tasker and Greenify and you should hit 30 to 40 hours with decent SOT out of it.
May want to try a factory reset and start fresh; ive done it twice already, to learn what combo's work best or cause issues. its a pain but was worth it.

Could you post pics of modified vr for s7 active? Also, will s7 roms be compatible with the s7 active? Only thing I believe could be issues would be with the quad core processor (where the s7 has an 8 core), battery size, and tactile buttons.

Friend tried to install a rooted S7 (non-edge, USA Qualcomm 820) ROM and it simply bootloops, he managed to get it back to stock (ill try to find the stock S7 Active ROM for Odin/brick purposes and post a link). Root has not been achieved for S7 Active and likely never will, sadly.

AT&T store in USA (bought 5 total actually; folks, myself, GF, and for 2 relatives in Europe). I requested that AT&T unlock them, and as they were paid for outright, AT&T sent the correct unlock codes for each unit. S7 Active is ONLY available in USA through AT&T, however WILL work on any international GSM carrier or USA GSM carrier ONCE it is SIM unlocked. Again, if you pay for it outright, are in good standing with AT&T, they will unlock it no questions, no problems, and no additional costs. They can also be unlocked, for a price, by certain websites that you could find by doing a google search, id prefer not to refer or name companies.

SOME nationally available and all int'l S7/S7 Edge have the Exynos octa-core; all AT&T S7, S7 Edge, and S7 Active have Qualcomm 820 quad core processor. I will try to get pics of my friends modified VR; he just left overseas for work. S7/S7 Edge ROMs will lead to endless bootloops (ie have to ODIN back to stock) and it is likely there will never be root or ROM options for these phones, which is unfortunate.
I played with an S7 and S7 Edge; the programmable active button is awesome, there are no cut corners on specs (do get a glass screen protector asap though), and the battery i average 40 hours with Greenify, a tasker screen-off kill-open-apps task, and bloatware (including all facebook crap) disabled. i leave S-voice on, Google App on, wifi on about 50% of the time, and GPS always on.

I am a currently using Samsung Galaxy Note 5. Love the phone EXCEPT the battery. in terms of Screen-On time, It hardly lasts for 3.5 hours. I use my phone a lot and have to charge it 3 to 4 times a day. Moreover, there is no SD card slot and am hanged with 32 GB storage ONLY.
I was in market looking for a new phone by replacing note 5. Things I want in new phone:
a) bigger screen
b) bigger battery
c) Dual sim
d) SD card support
e) Ram over 4 GB
f) Camera with OIS
g) Under $300
h) S-Amoled Screen
Now it ticks many boxes except point F and H. I am huge on camera. I love taking pics and videos. The lack of OIS is sorta deal breaker for me but IF the camera works really well without it, I can live.
Anyhow, I want your suggestions, moving from Galaxy Note 5 to Xaomi, is it a wise decision?
100% wise decision. Order 6gb/128gb variant with xiaomi.eu rom from TradingShenzhen (theirs is the one with least headache and hiccups), and I'll walk you through the process. We have excellent camera and even better quality with camera2api enabled via magisk(root) for Google camera.

And by the way, my experience with non-flagship phones has been bizarre. I mean after 1.5 years their parts start failing like microphone etc. I mean companies use really mediocre parts for non-flagship phones.

Dubai is overpriced. I'd avoid the wait and order online and have it in a few days. That's just me. Prices will stay around the same. They've hovered around $300-350 US for some time. No issues with this phone so far. No complaints either from month long users. Xiaomi is on another level. My bro has a mi book pro that is running flawless. It's all in how you care for your products. I would never recommend anything bad to anyone especially if not owning or wanting it for myself. I'm a heavy user from rooted Note 8 to rooted Mi Max 3. Absolutely no regrets.

Coming from a Note 4 ( destroyed it by accident) The thing that strikes me most is the good build quality and the brightness of the huge screen.The screen quality also seems very good compared to an amoled screen. Obviously no stylus support on it.The Camera seems good in the light, but needs to be improved in the dark...to much noise.However there are options with the Camera app to have manual control or install the Open Camera app.Screen on time using that 5500mah is also very good....just make sure you've got large hands and large pockets

The battery life is very good , i only got like 5-6 hours screen on time , but please note im using it outside with mobile data , bluetooth gps always on and the sreen is nearly max brightness, the S G note 4 lasted 1-1.5 hours with the same settings / apps

Camera is way better thn my S G note 4

Size wise its a big and heavy phone but you know what , couple of years ago when i bought my S G Note 4 i said and my friend said the same :laugh:
