[Q] Worth switching to a Google Play Edition ROM? - G Pad 8.3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I want to use the Google Play launcher, mostly for the "OK Google" always on feature. Is it possible to flash my device to a Google Play edition ROM? Is it worth flashing to one of these ROMS (stability?) or is there another ROM which would be better suited for me? Basically I want to get back to a standard Android ROM / UI.
Thanks!

The GPE ROMs are not functional on the V500. The closest you'll come is CM11.

Thanks for this, I've been reading around and it's a shame to see the V500 and V510 have different hardware
If I move to CM11, would I be able to get the always on "OK Google" feature to work? Not too bothered about battery life I just wanted to try out the features for a project I will be working on.
Thanks,

The Google Now launcher can be downloaded from the Play store and will work with CM11. Also, I think I say something recently about it being included in CyanogenMod's Trebuchet launcher. You can do a little research.

As does Nova.

I don't see much advantage in switching. Several good ROMs available for V500 and you get to keep your SD card support.

Do we have to use touchwiz to benefit from the S pen features?

Or will they still work in nova launcher? (obviously still on a Sammy rom, not aosp)
Thanks
You obviously still can use all the features with another launcher, you just have to use stock apps (video player, email, gallery, dialer ... etc)
To make use of spen features, you only need those tw frameworks. You may use spen features on any launcher provided you have those frameworks.
And as you said,it will work on Sammy based roms only.It won't work on AOSP,AOKP roms as they lack tw frameworks.....

As others have mentioned before, you can use any launcher.
But for the S-Pen functionality, you need to use the stock apps provided by Samsung.
You "might" lose out on some of the functionality, if you change the launcher. This is just my guess.

I just thought of quick command, I think it only works on TW's home screens and app drawer.
Thanks, to be honest I doubt I'll use the s pen too much anyway, just want the big screen - I find my s3 too small!
So it means no SPen apps on custom roms??? I love changing my roms. Its kind of a deal breaker for me.

It will work on TW-based custom roms but on AOSP/AOKP it will behave just like your finger, no pressure sensitivity and such.

No... There is an App called *G-Note* ( Just like the stock S-Memo app ) that comes with the CM10 PA Based Hybrid JB Rom that I run.. works great!

wait so pressure sensitivity only works with default apps? so it wont work with any drawing apps from the market?

For apps that support pressure sensitivity it will work just fine (take a look at the note 10.1 forum for some examples), but I THINK you still need to be on a TW based rom. I'm not sure though, too bad I no longer have my Note 1 to check it.
i ordinarily flash straight to pure aosp from whatever manufacturer paint job the phone comes with (sense, touchwiz, blur), but after watching the hands on video i may actually stay stock with the note 2, my only reason for switching from stock on my gs3 was ICS/big red not pushing out JB, but the s-pen functions look so good.

I've not found any apps on the market that support pressure with my Flyer.

AOSP ROM and S-Pen apps

Hi, I will get my Note 2 in the next days and before I get it I'm reading a lot about how to flash ROMs, I've always had Motorola phones so Samsung flashing is a completely new world for me. I've read that if you flash an AOSP based ROM you will lose all the S-Pen apps and stuff, obviously I will test all those apps before I flash, but I really don't like the TouchWiz interface so in the near future I will change it to AOSP, is there a way to install all those S-Pen/Samsung apps in a fresh AOSP ROM?
Thanks!
No. But you can download papyrus from the play store. Its a note taking app. Its mentioned tons of times in tons of posts that spen apps will not work or be in aosp ROMs because they are touch wiz based.

Thank you! I Will try that app when I get the phone.
You can also stay on a tw rom and just use a different launcher. Then you are not stuck with the tw interface, but can still use the s pen apps

I don't like TouchWiz look. I like some of the apps and features. If it were even possible I'd love to have the multi window feature on the AOSP or AOKP rom interface
Check out avatar ROM then. Its touch wiz but its aosp themed.

Unfortunately, that won't be possible. All the apps you just mentioned rely heavily on the TW framework, you must be on TW to use them. I highly recommend Axis ROM, I am a beta tester for it. Should you decide to venture back to TW, check it out!

I don't think I'll go back to it. I do like the HD icons. I just don't like most of the ui. It doesn't have that paranoid android type of feel to it where I can change the DPI and so fourth. When you use xposed the settings and things look bad from it.

I understand, it's certainly not for everyone! I bounce back and forth, once Halo is out I'll be back on PA for a while!

Thanks Tee-Jay, I do the same thing with my S3. When is Halo supposed to be out? What is it? and when will PA have Multi-Window functionality in it?

Honestly, I'm not sure when it will be out, but there are videos of it on YouTube, seems pretty awesome. Inspired my Facebook Chat Heads
That to me is very fascinating. Now that they have that they should be capable of providing the multi window function as touchwiz does. That would be a great step for Paranoid Android. I have a question for you! Send a message to my inbox!

Android 4.4 - kitkat apps and conversion thread

As we all know, Android Kitkat 4.4 was launched today along with the Nexus 5. Google has also released the sourcecode for the new OS.
There are, however, a plethora of 4.4 applications that are supported by 4.3 -- just to keep you occupied till 4.4 comes out for our phones (unofficially, of course).
I've been dumping these applications that I've tested right here:
https://mega.co.nz/#F!yd9XyKRZ!OONKBzzngb8R2nmDIpxFFw
Of course, this is not at all officially supported however I've gotten the new launcher, keyboard, google search, hangouts (with SMS) and everything else working as well.
Enjoy!
Here you can find lot more..
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BxNu8eof1O79ZzdLYkZvVVVaYjA&usp=sharing#list
I've installed Gmail and Hangouts in LG stock ROM (epsilon) and are working great!
I assume these don't work with stock 4.1.2 (no root), do they?
I miss my n4, there are at list 4 kitkat builds ready to download...
Someone is working with the sources?

you have to install google now from nexus 5 factory image, than it'll work. but no "ok google"-Voice search. This feature will only work with s800 cpus.
I have tryed camera also, fc when I switch to panorama or sphere. Optimus G 4.1.2 stock. Maybe something else is needed for that too?

you're right. but it's not like on moto x, it only works when you are on one of the homescreens and google now, and only with us amarican language. for moto x functionality it would need a dedicated cpu-core.
Try using Utter if you want the "Ok Google" functionality on the LGOG. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brandall.nutter

NFC available in any of the latest roms?

I can't post this where I would like to because I haven't posted enough, so I guess it goes here. I'm trying to find a rom with NFC enabled, mostly for use with Google Wallet. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm currently using the latest stable build of Slimkat and while it works well, I'm looking for more.

You can ask questions in Q&A just fine. That is where all questions go.
As for NFC, any stock based TouchWiz ROM should have NFC working just fine.
Every tw ROM I've ever used has it.

I've been running Paranoid Android 4.6 Beta 1, with the new Android L recents and dynamic statusbar. It supports tap and pay as well as nfc. This is just an option if you don't like touch wiz based roms.
