Hey guys I just joined the S4 family on Thursday and loving this phone.
I'm starting to have a problem with my earphones, when I plug them into the S4, usually a "Headphones connected" message comes up in notification bar. However now it doesn't do that anymore, and I hear a clicking noise. Sometimes after plugging it in and unplugging it out a few times it works but the audio quality is terrible.
The strangest thing is that my S4 works perfectly with Samsung stock earphones and my skullcandies work perfectly with PC...any help guys?
Rooted and running Insane KitKat Rom V9. Tried Factory reset and that didn't work.
Could try cleaning out headphone jack on the phone. But I have had that issue with Skullcany 3 times before one of the buds finally blows.

I downloaded and tried Viper4Android and I must say, It blew away all the other "enhancers" that I have installed and used HANDS DOWN!
The phone sounds hundreds of times better! Even using only the speaker, it sounds really great. Using headsets it just simply astounds me how much better the sound can get....
Don't worry when you search the play store... it shows Chinese characters and you might wonder how the heck you;re supposed to install and update and set the thing up.... SURPRISE!!! it installs and shows everything in English! I'm not sure why, but it works and is SUPERB!
Thanks for pointing me to that app!
To all, Aloha and Good Luck!

I tried V4Android and my headphones are still borked. I'm going to try cleaning the earphone jack because I think it's causing this problem

Hey... did a little research could not find much in the way of a resolution..
Just bought the Acer today (actually bought it yesterday but battery was shot) so exchanged it for the one I now have.) the problem I am having is that the audio plays from both the speaker and the headphones at the same time. until I restart then it works as it should until i unplug the headphones and plug it back in later..... I contacted Acer tech support but have yet to recieve an answer... so I figured my trusty XDA community could help me faster than them....
any suggestions or ideas.. really hope I dont have to return it AGAIN ..apparently I got the last one in stock at staples.....

It's a known problem on Honeycomb 3.2, there is an OTA doing the rounds that fixes the problem but it's being distributed by region and nobody knows exactly how. As far as solutions go, there is always the flashable zip of the 3.2.1 Build, but I don't know how far you're willing to go to fix it.
There is also a workaround for the headphones on 3.2 by plugging and unplugging, but I don't use headphones often so I don't recall how exactly.

Just an FYI, you don't need root to update the tablet.
Yeah, I had this problem too, its the 3.2 update, let's just hope the 4.0 update doesn't come in the way this new 3.2.1 update is. Anyway, the fix for this is crazy simple. Whenever the audio starts playing through both the speaker and headphones, unplug the headphones, let the audio play through the speakers, and plug the headphones back in while the audio is playing, this makes it go through only headphones, tada, solution.
If this happens I start playing the video for 5 seconds with no headphones plugged in and then plug them while it's playing and it switches properly.
i've this problem too. is not really annoying but is a little bug... I'm waiting feedback from user that have installed the 3.2.1 update in order to see if it is really helpful or not.

Yes, the ''official'' OTA update to 3.2.1 that started appearing on Monday 2 January fixes the headphone/speakers bug.
LOL, I was sitting in the break room at work today watching an episode of Fringe S3, about 5 minutes in and everyone's staring at me with a "WTF is with you?" look on their faces, I unplug my headphones and say "yeah?" Guy next to me says "You listening to something?" I say "Yeah?" He says "So are we..."
I still forget to play/plug or unplug/replug... Annoying...

Whenever I play music with my One V there is an audible hiss. I'm using a cheap pair of JVC Gummy IEM's and even with them the hiss is pretty prevalent.
Whether the volume is muted or at its max, as long as an audio file is playing the hiss remains.
It should be added that the hiss does not change in volume as it stays at a constant level independent of system volume.
I'm wondering if it affects EVERY One V, or if it's just a select few handsets which are doing it.
this should be posted in the Q&A section not general, as it's a question.
Duh, my bad about that, of course it should be in the Q&A section.
If a mod could move this over that would be great!
My One V also has some hissing while playing music. But it's better since firmware version 2.08.

I have updated my firmware but found no great improvement. As per you, the hissing only happens when I'm playing music.

mine doesnt, im on 2.08.401.2. seems like a hardware problem to me?
Moved to Q&A. Please keep all questions there. Thank you.

Got that. Sent to service for repair. Waiting for return.
Me too
I have the same problem with my One V. Using Sennheiser CX-300 II in-ear headphones the hiss is very loud (in my opinion), making it useless for listening to music (esp. classic) at low volume. When I complained about this the phone got sent to service, and returned to me a week later with a note saying that no problem could be found with the phone. Thanks a lot. Sent the phone back again, still waiting.
I talked to HTC (Sweden), and they completely deny ever having heard of this problem, although several sources on the web report it. I also tried a demo phone in a store, and it had the same problem.
My guess is that this problem affects all One V's due to bad internal shielding or a crappy DAC, but that HTC are being very quiet about it since only users who are picky about sound quality will notice.
Nohing like this with me!
Hissing? It never happened o me!
Interesting! Even with volume turned to zero (while playing music) and using sensitive headphones? In that case you're the first one to write about not being having the problem, which I guess is good news.
YES!!!!!!!

Yes, there's nothing like a hiss!! Many said that there were Bluetooth and Heating problems too! But it's nothing like that! Atleast with me!
Hi everyone
I've tried searching everywhere but no luck.
The microphone in-call volume on my GNexus is too loud and distorted (maybe too much gain?).
People keep on complaining about it especially when I'm in loud environments.
I've tried returning to stock and installing CM10 but no changes.
Since it's still under warranty, shall I have it checked?
Edit: I'm now running stock with Franco kernel.
Thank you
An update: I had the mic changed by Samsung and the problem is still there.
It seems like the mic has too much gain or the volume is too high. If the phone is far (10-15cm) from my mouth the sound is normal but the environment noise is still pretty high.
I don't know what to do now.

It looks like your microphone is defective, that can happen if you have gotten dirt/metal debris into the reciever (though i dont know how that can happen on the gnex).

Hi,
I was on 4.1.1 and the speaker volume was very low but on the earphones it was good.
I upgraded to 4.2.2 and it has gone extremely low on the speaker and much lower on the earphones, plus the equalizer app is not as noticeable anymore.
Seriously, the speaker volume now is just inaudible, just a whisper. I can't hear anything on it (calls, music, videos...). Nothing. The phone is usless like this.
HTC told me to send it while it is under guarantee, but they can decide that I damaged it myself and not repair it.
So, first, I'd like to go back to 4.1.1. How can I do i? Resetting to factory settings is useless, the problem persists andI'm still on 4.2.2-
Any advice?
Thanks

Dude,
I thinks your speaker is damaged!
Because HTC One x volum on sense 5 is very good and louder!
Regards from Brasil
Thanks for your help guys.
I think it is everything. It is an old phone and it's dirty, so certainly the microholes of the speaker must be clogged with dirt. At the same time the speaker must be defective because it is extreeemly low and it is a very common problem for many owners. And finally, what I know for sure is that yesterday the sound on the earphones was excellent and today is low and poor, while it is dead onthe speakers, and that is caused by the 4.2.2. upgrade.
In these spanish forums other people are reporting the same after upgrading. http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=688211, so it's not only me.
So, what I'd like first of all is to know if it's possible to go back to 4.1.1, but still I will send it to HTC for repair on Monday.
About cleaning the holes with a toothbrush, I already tried with normal toothbrush and nothing changed. I read that some people are opening it and cleaning from inside with some specially thin brush, but I can't void the guarantee by opening it.
Thanks again. If you know if I can go back to 4.1.1 that is my main concern now.
Hi. Try this.
I understand the volume on 4.2.2 Sense 5 is a lot low. Get Viper4Android app and install it and do the settings as you would like. It works wonderfully on 4.2.2 Sense 5.

I can't root it by now, I need to keep the guarantee. If HTC fails to repair it, then I will try Viper4Android.
Thanks anyway.
Still, I'd like to know if it's possible to go back to 4.1.1. Nobody seems to know.
You can go back to 4.1.1 but you need to unlock you boot loader and flash a custom recovery and a custom 4.1.1 ROM. Sorry but no other way.

Oh I see. Then I better wait to see what HTC can do with the volume and then I will decide if rooting and using ROMs.
Thanks a lot.
Actually, on the earphones it's still great sound and the equalizer app works fine. I was doing something wrong. It's just the speaker which is low.
Thanks to everyone.
Update: I sent it to HTC and they fixed it fast and free of charge as it is under guarantee. Now it sounds very well, loud. In the report paper they say that they changed the software but not any hardware was replaced. I stil have 4.2.2, so I don't know what they changed. Maybe they just opened and cleaned the speaker inside.

Not sure why her volume had decreased so much, but then it might of been after an upgrade overall? but

Well, I finally changed from a Galaxy S2 to an S4. I so love this phone but not sure what's with audio out. I use a 40 watt radio with audio in and hook my phone up to it. Using an equalizer in the S2 I could turn the volume on the phone most of the way up without problems. If I turned it up all the way thought he speakers in the radio would distort. But the radio sure put the volume out! Now that I have the S4 I've installed the same equalizer and set it the exact same way. I can turn the volume up all the way on the phone plus turn up the two band equalizer on the radio and it's nowhere near as loud as when I had the S2 hooked up. Both phones would warn me about having volume up to loud when using headphones but I always ignore that since it's a radio I'm hooking up to. Is it my imagination or is the S4 just not putting as much out as my S2 did?
Viper4Android will solve ALL your sound woes. It requires root though but its TOTALLY worth it.
Lol, looking at it in Google Play it doesn't look like it's in English so I think I might have trouble with it though. Rooting the phone is no big issue. I've rooted and unrooted it already.
