I am hoping someone can answer this for me. Will the recently released root capabilities allow me to connect a Bluetooth keyboards that requires a password? This is something that the Fire TV couldn't do previously.

Bluetooth Keyboard with built in touchpad
I am also very interested in this....
Is it possible to get the bluetooth settings to work with my motorolla keyboard and touchpad combo (Motorolla KZ500)? I get it to pull up the settings to see the keyboard and prompt to type in numbers but it doesnt receive anything I input at this step.
I will keep trying and let OP know if I find anything, but I am not a real android dev by any stretch.
I got my Logitech PlayStation 3 Cordless MediaBoard Pro to link with a generic usb dongle. It is great because it has a mouse pad built in
Got it to Connect - But not functional
I succeeded at getting the Motorolla KZ500 keyboard & touchpad combo to connect to the Fire TV through the use of the android settings.apk and typing in the numerical prompt. - I am on the latest firmware and am rooted now, if that matters.
However, despite showing up as an input device, no keypresses or mousepad movements are registering with the device. Does anyone know what could be wrong?
When I use a USB keyboard and mouse, it has no problem registering all of that.

Exactly why would you want to use a mouse? For small, incremental things that your fingers don't feel like they're precise enough? Just curious, not trying to troll.

Haven't gotten my Xoom yet; but wouldn't the arrow keys accomplish this to some extent? Obviously can't play touch games and things, but could navigate around apps and things. Curious how well the arrow keys do work for anyone who has done this? Love the idea of hooking up to my TV for youtube, music, etc...
I tried my presentation keyboard today and the touchpad did not work. I would not take this as an absolute that a bluetooth mouse will not work but it does not look like it from here. It is possible that a dedicated BT mouse will work where a keyboard mouse combination device did not.

Same problem I have with my Logitech DiNovo mouse... Actually tried this this morning, just for giggles. Pairs but won't connect. My same DiNovo keyboard pairs and works perfectly. I think it doesn't connect because it doesn't really know what to do with a mouse, I doubt Google built in that functionality.
I think someone would have to write an app that overlays the actual cursor - as there is no cursor built-in. However, I am running 1.7 on my Asus netbook - installed with no issues, and it recognizes and uses the mouse - built-in mousepad, usb mouse, and bt mouse. So the functionality is there, I guess Motorola never thought to implement it. Perhaps somebody more familiar with the OS could enable this?

Currently what I do with my laptop is hook it up via the VGA cable to my TV and use my iPhone and the handy Logitech Air Mouse app to control what's going on.
So same as a Bluetooth touchpad, I guess. I'm sure we'll figure something out
I paired a Razor Orochi to it, and its showing as a little mouse icon instead of the keyboard icon, so someone was thinking about it.
Hope someone can get this working, I enjoy hooking my SGS up to the tele and using my BT keyboard and mouse with it, so this functionality is quite important to me.
Wouldn't the Xoom need drivers associated with the mouse? Or maybe the bluetooth connection suffices...
we might need to take a look at the Viewsonic G-Tablet cursor code. Has a nice cursor when using a usb or bluetooth mouse. Not sure how or anything, programing is not my specialty. My biggest flaw lol

I would love to see this working, having a mouse would make it much less awkward when used as a laptop replacement for work.
I don't really understand why this isn't built in from the get go, hopefully Google being the update and improve fanatics they are, will add in this functionality officially. But in the meantime, would love to see this working with some fanangling
Dex
Agree completely. We have a keyboard, why not a mouse. Hopefully it's in the kernel somewhere waiting to be enabled. I don't imagine drivers would be a problem once the OS recognizes it.
I would love to see this working as well! We have USB and HDMI out, why not have this. It would be like a nice little cloud-based work or browsing terminal in the bedroom instead of breaking out a laptop or having a net-top in there... Good for road warriors too.
I don't understand why mouse functions would work in pre-Honeycomb versions of the OS and it would be left out now. That would be ridiculous.
I have a bluetooth keyboard from logitech, and it makes the tablet much easier to use, more of a laptop experience. Now I wanted to use the tablet connected to my TV, but find it a hassle to have to use the screen to select things. ect.
My question is, will any bluetooth mouse work? Logitech has a special android mouse, but its $50! I see other bluetooth mice out there for about $10-20.
Will any bluetooth mouse work? Or do I need a "special" android tablet mouse?
Thanks!
No. You need to be sure that the mouse pairs with the tablet via a 4 digit code (usually 1234 or 0000). The Targus bluetooth laser mouse (AMB03US) supposedly doesn't need a code, but I couldn't get the tablet to pair without it. I switched to a different mouse (Targus Bluetooth Comfort Mouse #BH3874)which used a code and it worked flawlessly.

Hello. I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse that pairs and connects succesfully but after entering in idle state for a few seconds they both stop working until i press on the keyboard or mouse. Is that normal? Is there a way to avoid this idle state and loss of connection?

Bluetooth working mouse with Android devices
Hi
Last month I bought Modecom BT keyboard with case and mouse (set) for Sony Xperia Z2 tablet.
Keyboard - model Modecom MC-TKC10BT and mouse model - Modecom MC-BM6
Keybaord has worked well since beginig, but I have had problems with mouse - flickering, many stops,
completely unusefull.
I have paired both devices with Samsung Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005 (rooted - X-Note ROM version - 16.0 by Soloilmeglio - Xentrix
Android based 4.4.2) and there was the same problem (only with mouse).
I have thought there is Android problem, but I have bought new - cheap mouse Esperanza Model EM123K and it works well and smoothly.
There is not any stops and disruptions.
It seems that is not an Android problem (As I wrote on some internet sites and forums), but hardware problem with some bluetooth devices.
Best regards
Marek
Just went through the directions and successfully updated CWM and installed the boot menu. Took a few tries to get CyanogenMod to boot up but once I wiped the user data and reinstall it booted up fine.
Question, is the OUYA controller useless once in CyanogenMod? Do I need a keyboard/mouse to use it properly? What is the fan favorite for devices to replace the awkward controller?
Thanks.

This. I can't type from my OUYA remote to the onscreen keyboard. I've searched to find a way to enable this feature and couldn't find anything that would. I would think adding OUYA Remote as an input device might do it (Keyboard & Input in CM Settings) But, there is no option to access it.
I tried dl'ing Six Axis and it got late so I wasn't able to mess with it too much, but, it didn't seem like it was going to work. Essentially, I just want to be able to select the letters of the onscreen keyboard with the Ouya controller. Has anyone had better luck?
I have really retired my OUYA controller. Multi port USB hub with a USB keyboard, for recovery work, wireless mouse and a Bluetooth keyboard are my choices. I don't much care for games so this is just an HTPC for me. XBMC, Pandora, some weather apps, Facebook and tumblr. I haven't even tried the controller with any android games. Does it work in that respect?

Ive not actually tried it. It Navigates ok with wireless xbox 360 controller, so I`d guess its ok. Seriously, get a cheap wireless keyboard and mouse, for pref, not a bluetooth one but one with a dongle. Bought mine for £15 and its a joy to use. Browsing on a nice big TV is awesome.
You need to manually link the ouya controller in the blue tooth setting menu. Put the controller into discovery more than select find BT devices. You only need to do this once
I apologize up front because I can see that this has been discussed but I can't find a definitive answer after reading through all the different threads.
Is there a way to pair a bluetooth keyboard + mouse/trackpad to the Fire TV with a device that can't be rooted?
I ask because like a lot of others, I just pre-ordered the Fire TV Stick. Now I know it's not out so we don't know what it can/can't do but assuming the code is the same, I'm trying to do some homework before it arrives. And since the Stick doesn't have the USB inputs, I have to rely on Bluetooth or maybe an app for a virtual keyboard/mouse if anyone knows of one.
Thanks in advanced!
I didn't even think of that. I ordered two. I use my K400 occassionally for different apps. I was using the limitless remote app too. The new Fire Tv Remote app might work but I will miss the K400.

Yeah. I'm looking for it to use with HBOgo mostly. I'm guessing that the mouse is the important input to get that working.
It will be great if I can pair my Bluetooth mouse with Fire TV Stick.

This is exactly what I am trying to figure out also, a Bluetooth keyboard/trackpad that will work with sideloaded apps like HBO GO or NFL Game Pass that are not compatible with the remote.
usb dongles work on firetv, not on firetv stick.... for now.
Would also like to know, sideloaded Settings.apk on mine to get to the stock android settings. Can detect Microsoft bluetooth mouse, Monoprice bluetooth headset and sound brick but none of them pair right. The two audio devices make a pairing sound. But don't play audio.
I sideloaded the settings.apk, and using it I'm able to successfully pair Apple Wireless Keyboard and Apple Magic Mouse. Both keyboard and mouse functionalities work just as if it was USB keyboard/mouse.

Yes, keyboard pairing works with both Fire TV and Fire TV Stick. I've sideloaded the settings apk and have successfully paired the AERB IBK-02 keyboard with trackpad/mouse to both devices. This keyboard has a trackpad, but it has limited functionality. Although scrolling is possible with two finger touch, you cannot click and drag. For this you'll need to pair up a Bluetooth mouse.
vg-kbd2000
I picked this up for my Samsung TV ( doesn't work with mine - no Bluetooth )
But, it works with my Sony GoogleTv and my FTV stick with settings apk side-loaded
the nice thing with this keyboard is that you can pair it with 3 different devices.
It has a selector button on the top to choose which one.
I haven't played with it very long and am trying to figure out what works and what doesn't
To use the touch-pad a switch on the bottom needs to be slid to "mouse mode"
I can't use the TV specific buttons on the right side of the keyboard. Wish i knew how to get them to work with the GoogleTv - it has an Ir blaster built in and will control volume, channel, etc
It will power my TV on and off - it has an Ir transmitter. But, that is all that does - strange
They are marked down to $39 at Best Buy and there are usually many open boxed ones to be had for less. Original price was about $100
But, they are mostly useless for the Samsung Tvs that they do work on - Most of apps do not support the keyboard or so I have read.
Wish the was some sort of unifying remote that I could connect to it and then plug into my TV though.
If you get one, the touchpad goes into a sleep mode after 30 seconds or so. I've read that hitting any button will wake it up. I didn't know that at first and was pairing it , unpairing it and powering it off.
If anyone else picks one of these up, Please post your findings

Hello
i tried to connect an Apple Magic Trackpad - i can find it and i can write the pin then im am stuck - it wont connect - how did you do it ?
Anyone else with sideloaded apps experience their key/mouse not working since the 1.5 update? (IE: Xfinity TV Go / HBO Go, all of the "must-have-a-keyboard-and-mouse" apps). Same goes for Firefox and Chrome, browser ability. Now it has signed me out of TV Go / HBO / other sideloaded (content) apps and will NOT allow me to access the login fields to even get back in.
I'm able to open the app(s), but the mouse buttons do nothing when trying to select something / menus and I'm often unable to esc out. Also, I've noticed almost all of the old key command abilities (alt+tab, FN+down, etc) are completely disabled machine-wide.
What the hell happened and how do I repair this? I purchased FTV over other set-top devices specifically for these certain apps. I could've just used my playstation if I wanted an expensive Netflix player.
(Important to know: I'm NOT rooted and using a Logitech K400 USB key/mouse.)
Not me

It still works great - just not on any app that REQUIRES a mouse and keyboard, like TV Go and HBO Go / Chrome, Firefox, etc. You're not having problems with apps not natively supported by the stock Fire remotes?

Good suggestion - however, it is off.
I guess I can summarize it as the mouse buttons do nothing machine-wide. Every app that previously accepted mouse-click input no longer does. Are you guys still able to click things?
Also, I can tab between input fields (username, password, etc) to type, but tabbing to the "submit" or "done" (etc) button and hitting enter doesn't react either.
Everyone: I've figured it out and it's now a totally different (albeit more concise) issue.

Was your USB mouse/keyboard connected when the Fire TV updated?
I have read reports that the update killed the USB mouse/keyboard drivers if they were connected to the Fire TV during the update.
I have also read some people have been able to re-install the driver but not sure.
After I read about this problem, I took my USB mouse/keyboard out of my Fire TV before I got the update. I did get the update recently but I haven't hooked my USB mouse/keyboard back up yet. I will try it tonight and see if it still works though.

I swapped out the K400 hub for my wireless Logitech mouse I use on my desktop computer and sure enough, works like a dream again.
It was totally a driver thing. Well.. now I either need to get a new key/mouse combo that'll function correctly or learn how to reinstall the drivers for the K400.
Obviously, the easy way out is to buy a new combo and get rolling right away - but how would I go about the proper way (reinstalling mouse drivers to the Fire TV)?
Do you have to be rooted to reload mouse drivers, or is that something that can be sideloaded in?

There are no "drivers" to install or reinstall. The USB input drivers are part of the kernel. Having something plugged in or not plugged in while doing the update has no effect on them.
