I am using stock kit Kat Rom with costume recovery. Knox is tripped, and I also use Xposed modules. I am curious if there is a way, and if so, how to receive OTA without full wipe and/or return to stock recovery (or lose root).
Thanks.

sorry to burst your bubble, but there isnt a way to do it, you can try to check manually, but what you can do is restore and update via kies...once the phone is up and running, re-root the same method you rooted before, and then restore everything through google play....if your worried bout messages and call logs and what not, go into the samsung cloud and back everything up.
Well, so i can root after odin back to factory, and titanium would work? Still seems a a lot... what about just flashingthe OTA zip in recovery?

I would just odin the update and restore apps and selected data via titanium

If I root using the toolkit and keep it stock, would I have any issues when Tmo sends out the JB update? I probably will just update via KIES since it will be faster. I mainly want root just for Titanium Backup. I miss it since getting my SGS3.

So, I should just root and not install CWR or another recovery? Like I said in my first thread, I just want to use TB, freeze or uninstall crap apps, etc. I will eventually install a custom ROM, not anxious to do that yet though. I had fun doing it with my G1 and SGS1, just dont feel like messing with that stuff at this point. TB is a must though.
You cannot root without flashing recovery. Just flash CWM Touch from my signature, and when the OTA update comes out, get it from Sammobile and flash it through CWM.

You need to flash custom recovery to inorder to access root. Afterward flash back stock recovery if you want or ready for ota updates.

WRONG.... You do NOT have to flash a custom recovery to get root access.

I have a Stock Rooted device which is prompting me for a system update. I go to install the update, the phone reboots to CWM and it says aborted. Any advice? Thanks!

OTA updates don't work with CWM, you have to reinstall the stock recovery.
Thanks for the reply. If you wouldn't mind pointing me in the right direction for doing that. I would also like to go back to cwm

The easiest way BY FAR is stay rooted and flash the LI3 equivalent to the OTA by Freeza
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743923
After flashing the ROM with CWM, also flash the Team Epic Root from Recovery. This will keep your root.
Reboot and you are good to go. Rooted with CWM and you will no longer be prompted for OTA.

No the easiest way is using mobile odin. Will patch sprints ota so it flashes. doesnt require downloading a 700mb file either

I tried a few times to update to 4.1.2 via OTA but it fails half way through, so today i decided to update via odin.
before i updated i'd thought i will remove the root for some stupid reason.
applied the update and everything went well. Re-rooted my phone via odin and cf auto root but no SuperSU. installed it from the play shop but it kept crashing all the time!!!!!! so it cant do anything.
Re-flashed the new firmware but the SuperSU icon is there but eveytime i click on it im getting "There is no SU binary installed and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!"
Can do i install it again?

there has to be a better way than that. i will lose all my apps, settings, data, etc!
Well backup apps with adb. Or make a nand. Titanium backup can extract backups from nands.

Not entirely, I did the OTA update while keeping root using SuperSU Pro and the root saving function. I had a similar failure at 25% when I first tried to update but found it was because I had missed a system app when defrosting. Make sure you've reinstalled/defrosted all the system apps you removed when you debloated.
As you're able to download the OTA update it means you've avoided tripping the flash counter and have been able to maintain the Status:Normal. I rooted originally with the Exynos abuse and have been using SuperSU Pro's root saving function since then to keep root through the OTA updates. It is possible but I will admit it has caused more difficulty then if I went the Mobile Oden or TWRP route.
Crap, I deleted some system apps.
Is there a list for me to compare?

Glad to here it.
I learned several phones back, don't ever accept OTAs. Let other people be the guinea pigs and let the devs figure out what the carrier is patching.
Ok, so here is my issue. For the sake of time, i want to make this question as simple as possible.
I've been putting it off, but now that kit kat is here, i need to get the ball rolling with twrp and my phone. Basically, i am on zv7, rooted stock. I have not been able to install twrp on my phone, and I need someone who would be merciful enough to help me out, to explain to me how to install it on stock zv7, and get kit kat, as i dont want to unroot. I have yet to find instructions online that would be able to help me with my particular situation... Any help would be appreciated.... Thank you for your time guys.

You can update with stock rooted. Why are you not on at least ZVA? You don't need a custom recovery to be rooted. You can be rooted and have stock recovery, but any time you take an OTA update you lose the root and have to rerun ioroot.

My point exactly. I don't want to lose root, and i don't want to reroot. Even if i took the OTA on stock rooted, i'm pretty sure it would break several things I have now as i use alot of apps that require root privilegedes, e.g titanium backup. I realize you don't need to have twrp to be rooted (as i am rooted), but i do need it to safely flash an updated 4.4 zip that would preserve my root privileges, and upgrade me to kitkat...
P. S, i am not on ZVA because when i soft bricked earlier this year, i had to go back to full unrooted stock, and in my rush to reroot, forgot to upgrade to zva before rooting, which is why im on zv7...

If you follow this method you will not lose root. But, 4.4.2 can be rooted with ioroot25 anyway, and it's easy.
The only way to enter custom recovery will be through a terminal emulator command (see post #2). If you take the OTA, you will lose custom recovery altogether.

It sounds like it would be easier for me to just take the OTA and reroot then go through this process of getting a custom recovery... Can i take the OTA on stock rooted zv7 without any serious reprocussions?

If I'm not mistaken when you check for updates, you will have to update to zv8, then zva, then it will offer zvc. Check in your updater what it says is available. I don't expect you'll have any issues as long as you haven't modified files/removed system files.

No. You will have to unfreeze those apps and completely remove xposed. You might want to flash Youdug's odexed stock rom if you continue to run into snags.
Also: If you are taking the OTA on your phone, you should probably unroot.
Ok, so here is what i did. I updated all the way to zva, but now im not seeing the kitkat update. How do i go about getting kitkat since the update broke root completely?
Just a note for those who want to preserve root while doing an OTA, supersu and superuser have a "survival mode" for people who want to preserve root. I had to factory reset so i couldn't do it, but just something to keep in mind.

If you're not seeing the update you have a few options. Some say clearing Google services framework data and hitting check for updates repeatedly works. You can install it using the method above, or you can flash autoprime's .tot file using LG flash tool.
You can always re-root with ioroot25 if you need to.
Just want to say thanks to everyone here who took the time to help me out. For those of you who want to know, i decided to root from zva. I used the freegee app to download and install recovery (super easy) and am about to flash cm11 for stock kitkat.
