Hi,
I am on E980 ATT 4.1.2 stock. I have unrooted and also installed CWM 6.0.4.7.
I haven't yet gotten a notification for an upgrade to KK, but I am wondering.
#1 If I upgrade over the air, will it brick my phone since it's rooted and has a custom recovery?
#2 If I do want to upgrade, what's the best method for upgrading and will I have to unroot and remote CWM?
Thanks

Hi there,
several manufacturers and providers do not send or cannot send the updates because of certain rooting means.
If you see the window with message: "No updates available for your device." or "The latest updates have already been installed.", then you will receive the updates inspite of root access.
But you must flash a stock recovery before or even flash the whole stock ROM. Via custom recovery and rooted ROM stock updates cannot succeed.
Mine was rooted with stock recovery and the upgrade process went fine this week. Since you're on CWM recovery I'd say don't do it. When the last upgrade came out and I was running a custom recovery and it boot looped my phone (as well as everyone else's phones).
As best I know your only option is to restore phone to stock and take upgrade, then root, install recovery and all your apps/settings. Its a beeyotch right?

I am currently on ICS 4.0.4 stock AT&T, rooted, CWM installed.
Will the update to JB unroot the phone?
What about the apps I have installed and personal data?
Will it replace CWM back with stock recovery mode?
Please explain if you know how it's gonna work

Well, you won't be able to install it over the air since those updates require the stock recovery to be in place. To maintain root you'd have to wait until somebody posts a rooted version of the room and flash it via Odin.
I'm assuming you can keep your personal data as is, since when I flashed via Odin from Stock to Rooted it remained.
If I root my S3 will I still be able to get the OTA updates? I rooted my Atrix and after that I couldn't get the OTA updates. Also what is the best ROM?

If you don't need a specific feature from the stock firmware (gestures, wifi calling, etc), just get CM or AOKP and save yourself a headache.
Best? As far as stock? I've read LI6 is decent.
Well with my Atrix when Android 3.0 came out I wasn't able to update it because I was rooted. So my question is when Jelly Bean comes out will I be able to update it to Jelly bean if I am rooted or have a custom rom installed?

3.0 wasn't even for phones. If you install custom recovery you will not be able to receive an OTA until you flash the stock recovery. Just use a jellybean ROM.

How can this be true? This is what I did.
Restored a UVALEM nandroid (via CWM). It was the original firmware on the phone when I bought it (no custom install, but I rooted with the Sprint method a couple weeks prior), I just happened to keep this backup.
Reset factory defaults.
Nandroid again for clean UVALEM backup.
Use Software > About phone > Software update to get the UVALH2 update. It was ~90mb.
Phone rebooted after it was done.
Dropped into CWM to make another backup (CWM still here, was never removed).
Downloaded LI6 JB OTA from SamMobile. Installed that from CWM.
I have LI6, never removed CWM. And it is still there. Root should be, although I did not test to confirm.
If you can't receive OTAs with custom recovery/root, how did this work? Is it a feature that was not active in the UVALH2 build? What about the LI6 build I flashed from CWM?

I don't know, clockworkmod is supposed to block the installation of OTA updates.

Hmm, I'm using 6.0.1.2, and it does ask me if I want to disable /system/etc/install-recovery.sh, when I try to exit.
Hey all,
I'm looking for an extended reboot menu thats flashable for the new 4.3 update thats been rolling out. I'm on Telus (Canadian carrier) stock rom NOT rooted but with custom recovery. (Can't root due to work restrictions). Does anyone know of one or if the ones for ex the GS3 would work?
Thanks!
If you are not Rooted but with a custom recovery you flashed an unlocked bootloader correct?
As far as I know the 4.3 update for I317m bootloader has not yet been unlocked. I think if you accept the update to stock 4.3 you would lose your custom recovery until the unlocked 4.3 bootloader has been cracked. I don't think you would be able to flash any mods at that point.
Don't quote me.

A bit of background information on my set up.
Previosuly I was unlocked, rooted and custom rom on 4.1. Then my work began no longer allowing rooted phones to receive company email so in SuperSU I clicked "unroot" and kept the custom recovery and custom rom with all the tweaks but lost root access. Then my phone got messed up somehow so I decided to wipe it and install a new rom as it had been a few months. I installed a 4.3 rom and proceeded to unroot it. Apparently in 4.3 something has changed and simply clicking unroot removed my root access but the company program (Good for Enterprise) could still detect that it had been rooted. So I grabbed the Telus stock 4.3 firmware from a mirror (Sammobile still doesn't have it due to hotfile being shut down) and flashed it through Odin. This put me back to stock recovery and stock firmware, not rooted. I then flashed TWRP over the stock recovery in Odin and here we now are. I can confirm that the recovery flash did take and I am able to get into it, etc. Just looking for some .zips to flash now to bring things back to a custom rom state minus the root.
I think your stuck until some one comes out with a stock deodexed version as the reboot options are in the androidpolicy.jar file . Skynote 10 is based on the latest Canadian 4.3 and has the reboot option., just pull your csc folder and put it in the zip before flashing. But it is rooted and not sure if you can use cf-root to unroot as i have never tried to unroot you could also use xposed and wanam but you will need root for them to work hope i didn't confuse you
So I'm by no means super knowledgable with this stuff but I've rooted a few phones, played around with CM on my old evo but for the most part I enjoy rooted stock.
I have Galaxy S3 Sprint 4.3 updated OTA from a rooted (4.1.2). When I took the OTA I lost root, no big deal I used Odin and flashed the CF auto root, it said it removed knox and I had root back. Cool!
In short 4.3 sucked, wanted to downgrade back so things like TrevE mod would work again and it wouldn't be so buggy. I tried to use odin to flash "KIES_HOME_L710VPBMD4_L710SPRBMD4_1130792_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5" but it gave me the "Use Kies Recovery and error occured" message.
So I then used odin and flashed TWRP and my phone booted.
I'm back on 4.3 rooted.
I've tried picking through the forums and interwebz for answers but I get mixed messages and info on international versions and what not.
I'm tired of trying to figure it out and really could use some help downgrading back to 4.1.2
Thanks,
Brandon

The 4.3 OTA installed a locked bootloader, which will prevent you from ODIN'ing back to a previous version. you can flash any ROM you would like from recovery, you CANNOT downgrade the bootloader. As of right now, if you have knox, you are stuck with it.
You are extremely lucky that you didn't brick your phone by using odin to flash a non-4.3 tar. I wouldnt try again.
My advice is, remain rooted with a custom recovery, and find a ROM to your liking, and flash that.
I have also heard that we cannot flash custom kernels on the knox (MK3) bootloader as well, but I havent verified that.

Thank you for the response. Is CyanogenMod an option then? If I go to CM could I flash back a stock 4.3 rom in the future?
As an added bonus question does CM allow wifi tethering?
Again thank you for the response.

CM is certainly an option. In fact, its what i am running now. CM11 12-24. Runs great. You can always odin the stock mk3 tar and go back to stock unrooted, at any time.
in order to flash cm11 you MUST be on TWRP 2.6.3.1 or CWM 6.0.4.5 or newer or the assert check will fail.
not sure on the tethering, but im pretty sure it definitely works on cm10.2 and i think it does on 11 as well, but dont quote me on that.

Tethering is available on CM11 just like it was on 10.2; would strongly recommend latest Philz Touch Recovery over either TWRP or CWM though. Although it is based on CWM, it has proven to be pretty much the superior recovery option for flashing any Android build number, plus it is highly customizable.
Philz Touch Recovery
this is how to downgrade

do a factory data reset then use odin auto root from computer ok...... after boot u will get a security message supersu will be unfortunately stopping this is ok..... then u will need to download the supersu.app to root of sd then manually install this will update it and now u can turn off knox and have root... then go to market and download odin mobile then flash your .tar file u want and you will be good to go 4.1.2 doesn't have knox and has a unlocked bootloader so have fun bro this method may work for other phones

Do you realize that this thread hasn't been used in a couple of months? I would assume the author has no more need of advice based on the inactivity. Also, once Knox is installed, it is on the phone to stay. PERIOD. NO DOWNGRADING POSSIBLE VIA ODIN. Custom ROMs of any build are fine via custom recovery, but any attempt to change the bootloader will trigger Knox and brick the phone. Dangerous info to be posting here, especially since someone else who doesn't know better might try this.
I rooted my dad's phone a while back ago so he can use tethering in case of emergencies etc. He recently got a smart watch and I wanted to updated it so that he can use it. But it has not been touched since that day. I essentially want rooted stock rom, I'm unaware of where to find that the closest I can find is StockMod kitkat. Which seems to not work on ATT phones? I just want to make sure that I don't brick his only phone on christmas. So is there something I should be aware of?
His model is SGH-i747
Baseband
i747UCDLK3
Build number
jro03
So how do I go about upgrading it? Can I just flash TWRP and flash any rom using TWRP?
I found this, so I should install new TWRP, then flash a specified kernel then flash rom? would this be safe route?
Some of the latest ROMs require a 4.4.2 bootloader and modem.
The simplest and safest way to get the latest bootloader may be to flash back to unrooted stock 4.1.1 and run OTA updates until the phone is running the latest KK ROM. You can then flash TWRP or CWM and a custom ROM.

Would this require flashing with ODIN? I just want it so that it works with root is not required anymore.
Yes, you would flash the 4.1.1 stock ATT ROM via Odin. I prefer Odin 3.07.
You cannot install OTA updates with root.
You can try flashing just the bootloader and modem but I prefer the long slow route of OTA updates.
I rather do it this way, manually so my dad can enjoy it today. I was wondering how can I update it's TWRP? it's at 2.3 but the TWRP manager keeps crashing when I update it.
I highly recommend the latest d2lte version of Philz Touch for recovery.
https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2lte/
Ok I ****ed up, flash that kernel and did whatever and bam ****ed up. Not working... ****, I still ahve download mode and Recovery but it will not boot into the OS. I get a flash of samsung and then nothing else happends...****
I decided to flash stock DLK3 in odin. Then let the updates take it course (my dad doesn't need root) Where Can I find the file?
The stock ATT firmware is on sammobile.com.
If you want root, OTA to the latest 4.4.2, install Philz, flash supersu via recovery.
