I really can't find a post about this. Now I have a Z1C with locked BL and recovery so I already created a nandroid backup. I know that when unlocking BL it wipes everything including SD card. My question is can I restore my backup to a unlocked bootloader or it's not possible because this backup was created while my Z1C is still locked BL. Just don't feel like setting up all my apps again. Sorry if I sound lazy :angel::angel::angel:

thanks for that. so that means it's not possible? or i can do selective backup on CWM that doesn't include TA partition? Is it possible for that?
I'm not sure about cwm, but in twrp, you can exclude ta partition in making nandroid backup so I think it's possible in twrp

Okay thanks. will check later after work, i have dual recovery so i should see it. anyway, thanks again for the help
If you know how to backup ta partition, make a backup for locked bootloader and also make a backup for unlocked bootloader so if you want to unlock your bootloader all you have to do is to restore unlocked backup the phone will not reset

i already backuped my TA with the backup tool here but really haven't unlocked my BL because it would wipe everything including my external card (at least that's what others say) and i don't have the time to copy all my contents yet, it's quite a lot. Then i also don't want to loose my progress on a lot of apps and games so i guess would do titanium backup for each of them. thanks for the tip though. would really find time to backup my sd card and unlock my BL

Thanks about the info. So is it possibe to restore a nandroid backup i made from a locked BL state to my newly unlocked phone or i really need to setup again? What do you think sir? I really want my phone state of apps now and also preserve my progress with my games. I know there's titanium backup but it would be nice to simply the steps and avoid the process of backing it up again.
Yap. I don't think your recovery will be wiped if the phone resets so it should be easy.

yah, i don't think so if i will unlock the BL. I just want to know if others tried that. You know, it's really a pain to setup apps again, guess i have to try on my own. I will backup now with TWRP and exclude TA then unlock the BL. I'll try restoring the backup if it will work despite it was made from a locked BL. Thanks for the help guys.

Nope, why would you even think this, TA partition can't be read on a locked phone.

Yes, restoring a nandroid to an unlocked phone is no problem.

So when you want to unlock your bootloader all you have to do is to restore your ta backup, the phone will not reset anymore. If i giving someone advice it is because I already tried and tested it.

Assuming your phone is rooted, otherwise you can't flash TA on a locked phone, other than that it's a legitimate use I guess. But how often do you go from locked to unlocked and back again? For me that cycle happens like once per phone at most.
When I try something and then don't like the result. I unlock my bootloader first so I can easily root my phone when going back to stock rom

ive read in some other posts here that rooting our gsm gnexus will erase the phones data/settings/etc. because it is an "oem root". is this true? does it apply to the gnex toolkit?
thanks!

Rooting does not erase data/settings. HOWEVER, if you unlock your bootloader, it will erase everything. All toolkits that I have seen, root by unlocking your bootloader first (if it is locked).
Use this, and you will root without losing anything, locked bootloader or not.

why does unlocking the bootloader erase everything? and that is necessary to flash a new rom or kernel, correct?

Because it just does. It's a security thing. But it doesn't matter - with what I pointed you to in my previous post, you can root, flash a custom recovery, backup everything, then unlock your bootloader and restore the backup.
An unlocked bootloader is not required to flash a new ROM or kernel if you have root. You cannot, however, flash things through fastboot, but it doesn't matter.
In any case, I would recommend you unlock your bootloader and leave it unlocked.

security reason...if you have a phone with the bootloader locked and a lockscreen password, ur phone is secure (EDIT: usb debug need to be disabled to be real secure)...so if u lost the phone for example someone could unlock the bootloader and with root permission could get ur personal data..instead in this way if he unlock the bootloader the data in it is wiped..
with the bootloader unlocked ur phone give u free access to the system, so u can root it, flash rom, kernel and everything
in case a day u change idea, u can also relock the bootloader (this will wipe again ur phone EDIT: will not wipe it)..this is usefull to get warranty for example
there is also an exploit, mentioned before in the thread, that is able to root ur phone without unlocking the bootloader..but i suggest to unlock the bootloader as u have more control of ur phone by having access to fastboot commands
thanks for the help guys! i have to figure out if i really want to wipe all my data. if i use titanium to backup everything, then unlock bootloader, can i still restore the same backed up data, or does the changed bootloader make that impossible?

Not entirely true. You need to have USB debugging disabled in settings as well for it to be secure.

You do NOT have to wipe all your data.
Follow these steps:
1) Root your device using the method I linked to above;
2) Download ROM Manager from the market;
3) Using ROM Manager, flash CWM recovery;
4) Reboot into recovery and perform a backup;
5) Copy that backup OFF of your device;
6) Unlock your bootloader; <== This will wipe your device, including everything in /sdcard...
7) Copy your backup back to your device;
8) Reboot into recovery and restore your backup;
9) Done. Now your bootloader is unlocked, you have root, and your data/settings are exactly how they were before.
EDIT: Yes, you can use Titanium Backup once you root, but using CWM recovery is easier and faster.

Hi all. I've been a happy One X user since May. Today I saw few ROMS of JB for HOX. I really wanted to try these but I'm not in a place ( and not in position also ) to fully setup my phone again when I revert to stock.
As I'll unlock the bootloader from htcdev it'll full wipe the phone. Is there any way I can backup the whole rom before root? I'll backup sms, contacts etc but apps, their data, settings, homescreens need time to setup again. If not the full system what maximum I can achieve?
Seems like a silly question but I'll be happy if someone comes with a solution.
Sent from my HTC One X
You can backup your stock rom with cwm and there are many apps to backup data, contacts, and sms. But it sounds like you aren't ready yet, you should do more research before you go flashing custom roms
You need to have root to be able to do a backup through CWM, and you need to unlock the bootloader via HTCdev to get root. As you say, unlocking the bootloader will wipe the phone.
Unfortunately there is no way around this at present.

Hi there, ive been searching for guides for last few days for locked bootloader root on Z1 Compact on .757 Kitkat and every guide seems to be different or out of date, either jumping to other out of date tutorials or needing several downgrades?
Can i just run DualRecovery installer and have root on 757 or do i need to downgrade several Android versions back to early JB and then root and reinstall newer versions using root up to 757 again?
I mostly want to backup my TA folder and then can mess with phone properly but it seems a long winded process of downgrading and upgrading several GB of Android versions just to get root? How does root even survive if upgrading again?
So what is the easiest way to root on .757 so can backup TA then unlock bootloader? Do i need to downgrade to early JB to rooot or is there a current tool for 757?
Ive been messing with my Nexus 7 2013 since launch so not a complete noob when it comes to rooting and unlocking bootloaders, just the route to root for backing up TA isnt so clear for this Z1Compact on 757.
Thanks for help!
The reason for downgrading is purley so you can root the phone without unlocking your bootloader so that you can backup your ta and drm keys.
When that's done you are safe with the ta and drm. Then you can put whatever version in and unlock bootloader and root. Rooting on the newer versions can't be done without unlocked bootloader as far as I've understood this.
Me however just skipped the backup procedure and just unlocked and rooted. My ta and drm ain't backed up.
Sent from my C6903 using XDA Free mobile app
Once ive downgraded to root and backed up TA/DRM, can i upgrade to pre-rooted .757 without unlocking bootloader still? Or to have a locked bootloader once back to .757 to turn all the drm/TA features back on?
Is it possible to have locked bootloader, root and proper TA/DRM features enabled while on .757 currently?

Yes, just downgrade, install dual recovery, upgrade to pre-rooted .757 FW, then Backup TA (in tha case in future you will want unlock bootlader), done. Fully working rooted phone with DRM intact.

Sweet thanks!
I take it with downgrading i just let flashtool overwrite everything, or is there things i need to skip to preserve TA?
Sorry for all the questions but the tutorials all vary slightly.

Yes, in Flashtool do not "Exclude" anything and Wipe Data, Cache and Appslog. The TA have nothing to do with flashing so you can flash how much you want and they be there intact, they will be wiped when you will unlock your bootloader only.
Few Tips:
To backup TA use the only app recommended from HERE , and do a Backup TA before Unlock Bootloader and one Backup TA after Unlock bootloader (after unlock bootloader there will be no more DRM keys), but if you do 2 Backup you will be able to switch between Locked and Unlocked Bootloader just by Restoring the Backups, Backup before Unlock will Lock your bootloader, Backup after Unlock will Unlock your bootloader. Do not Relock your bootloader with Custom kernels because you will brick your phone.

Type *#*#7378423#*#* and go to Service test > Security, if you have in all strings [Key OK][Active] they are all good, if you have [Unknown Error] the DRM keys are lost.
I post mine with UB.

You would need to backup Your data using certain apps. I have personally used this app or You can use Titanium backup app, as it is preferred by many. Although You can backup only certain apps and their data, as some apps (mostly Sony's) won't work on the custom ROM's. Also, if You have not unlocked Your bootloader yet, I would recommend taking TA backup first.

You would need to look into respective threads as each ROM has a specific process for flashing that it. Also, The apps I mentioned previously backup only apps and their data, not the SMS and contacts. You would need to backup them separately.
my X2 is on rom version RMX1993EX_11.A.13
Before letting it OTA upgrade to A15 (and/OR A16), does any one know of a way to download the rom from the device ?
