Backup Before Root. - HTC One X

Hi all. I've been a happy One X user since May. Today I saw few ROMS of JB for HOX. I really wanted to try these but I'm not in a place ( and not in position also ) to fully setup my phone again when I revert to stock.
As I'll unlock the bootloader from htcdev it'll full wipe the phone. Is there any way I can backup the whole rom before root? I'll backup sms, contacts etc but apps, their data, settings, homescreens need time to setup again. If not the full system what maximum I can achieve?
Seems like a silly question but I'll be happy if someone comes with a solution.

You can backup your stock rom with cwm and there are many apps to backup data, contacts, and sms. But it sounds like you aren't ready yet, you should do more research before you go flashing custom roms

You need to have root to be able to do a backup through CWM, and you need to unlock the bootloader via HTCdev to get root. As you say, unlocking the bootloader will wipe the phone.
Unfortunately there is no way around this at present.

updating rooted Desire to the latest OTA

Hey guys,
I've got the latest update OTA ready to install, but since my device is rooted I'm wondering what do I do?
I've read threads stating to just update and re root it and others say it won't go through and I'd have to disable signatures in clockwork recovery !
hence I'm confused, please help
Cheers
Jackie
Its not safe to perform official ota updates on rooted devices.
Most of the time nothing happens, you just lose root. But anything could happen from losing your custom recovery to a non booting device, which is known to happen.
If you want updated software on your phone install a custom rom.

same situation, my question is can i apply this RUU from PC, and what will happen exactly? Lose root, data?
i found this RUU RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed
you can apply that RUU but you will lose root and all of your data so back everything up beforehand.
you may also need a Goldcard depending on whether your phone was unbranded from new or not.

I know about the Goldcard. Any idea on how to do a backup, i have read about using Titanium but i found it confusing. Little help would be useful
yeah, just use Titanium and back up all user apps as a batch process.
Backuo/Restore at the top of the initial screen.
Menu button and choose Batch
Then Backup all user apps.
you can then restore them after you've flashed the RUU.
also, make sure your contacts are backed up (probably by Google / Gmail).

OK, but there is an option all apps and data. what is data? is it app data?
Just back up user apps.
You don't want to restore any system data as you are changing roms.
Also, make sure you do a nand backup to go back to if needed.

So there is still no way to just update by update.zip?
I dont want to reflash my whole phone, I got everything backed up propper
but I find it crap because its just a very small update.
Just ignore the update then, if your phone is working fine

hmm an official update from htc, great. but if you are rooted and have tried a custom rom or even many such as me, then you dont want to loose that ability to flash great custom roms, just because htc released an update.
i am not sure, but i think that some users just unrevoked (rooted) their devices, but havent installed any custom roms and dont have the joy of it. i never want go to back to original rom. my future updates would be out of a custom rom. great forum here, love it
I just use the stock rom because i'm happy with it.
I rooted my phone because some apps wont work without it. I would try a custom rom but I still remember my HD2 and all the reconfigging I had to do.
Can you flash custom roms without reconfiguring everything?
Like.. when I flashed the last update.zip (405.2) I just installed it and I could start using my phone right away after the update. thats how I like it, but im not sure (more unsure) that this will work the same when I use a custom rom right?

I'm willing to reroot my phone, I just wanna know if a rooted device when update could mess up !?
I wanna try custom ROMs sadly I can't due to the rebooting issue, will be sending in for repair soon this week !

Rooting your device voids your warranty just as much as flashing a custom rom would. Either way would have to use the stock ruu before you send if back so it makes no difference if your stock rooted or have a custom rom.

how to backup apps before root (downgrade = full wipe)

Hi,
is there any way to backup appdata on a HTC Desire HD with the latest official ROM with Sense 3 before rooting and flashing a new ROM?
The AATK needs to downgrade for root. So I need a method without root or a (temp)root method that doesn't requirere a full wipe.
The Threads I found about this topic a so old, that i hope there are some new methods.

What you can do is to unlock the bootloader, flash CWM, do a nandroid, then relock and run the Hack Kit. I guess that that is your best choice and safest to have a working backup. :fingers-crossed:

You can use titanium backup, but you need root to do that....apps data needs root access. I have never extracted a nandroid but it might be possible...not sure thou.
Not sure, but I think newer TB can restore from nandroid, so that's your best bet... However be aware that you can't restore sense apps on an AOSP rom, not even sure for different versions of sense...

3. The first 5 steps (left top corner of the picture) are only to unlock the bootloader, you can't root a phone without a unlocked bootloader.
4. Well bloatware is considered as crap apps that a carrier installs to the rom/phone (if you are locked to one like vodaphone or TMobile) when you remove those apps you can not longer update with that rom. That's why you have to make a nandroid backup from the stock Rom because you need it when you want official updates later.
Here you can find more info about rooting, flashing and updating

Here is a simulation of wat i am going to do... so
1. i am going to follow all the steps exactly till taking nandroid backup from this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1843585 post... then my phone will be in stock rom right.. then if i want to update i can follow the steps from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1670433 .... This way i will have a rooted phone and i can update its software too right??
Or can i follow the instruction in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592355???
2. And if i want to install a Custom Rom then i will follow the steps in this post completely http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1843585 and then when i want to update i should follow this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660807 Right???
Well those links are covering the steps.
Basically what you do in steps is :
1. Unlock the bootloader
2. Flash a custom recovery
3. Make a NANDROID BACKUP and copy it to a safe place
4. Root the stock rom, or flash a custom rom
5. If you want to get updates from HTC you restore the nandroid backup from step 3 and after that flash back the stock recovery

The stock rom is not rooted until you install the superuser.zip with the custom recovery. You have to see it like this. Unlocking the bootloader is getting freedom of what to flash, the custom recovery is just a tool to install custom roms and for rooting the stock rom !
I suggest you install a custom rom, its rooted at all times and you have all benefits directly

No unlock and flash the custom recovery, in that recovery you make the nandroid backup of the pure 100% stock rom. The recovery and bootloader have nothing to do with root at all. The recovery is used to push root to the rom.

Well yes, because before the you restore the nandroid you have to full wipe the phone in the recovery, otherwise you will have boot problems. And yes when you restore the nandroid and flash the boot.img and flash the stock recovery back you are able to update.
You can backup text messages and apps before if you want with an app like titanium backup. I always my sync my contacts with Google so i don't worry about that

[Q] Root, Backup, ROM Flashing, Back to Stock

Hey all.
I'm very new to ROM flashing so I've done a lot of reading by sill have a few questions I need some clarification on.
I have the HTC One X (International Version) on Vodafone in Australia, running the stock (Vodafone) rom.
My concern is with the warranty of my phone - if I root it I loose my warranty. I understand that I can un-root my phone to get my warranty back.
I must have re-written this thread 5 or so times trying to explain what I do / don't know, so I'll keep it really simple.
[Q] What is the best way to take an entirely complete snapshop of my phone, so that if things should go pear shaped I can restore it back to it's exact current condition, including apps, sms, call logs, etc ?
[Q] Should I make a backup of my current Vodafone RUU or is making a NANDroid backup enough?
[Q] If I flash a custom recovery (CWR or TWRP) can I restore the original one to take my phone back to it's pre-warranty voided condition?
[Q] If I flash a new ROM (planning on using Cyanogen) am I able to keep all my contacts, or do I need to re-sync it with Google? Am I able to keep all my apps, or will I need to re-download them all?
I don't need super deep explanations, more just quick answers and a point in the right direction.
Note :
In bootloader, before rooting you will find *locked* written, this means warranty is applicable.
After rooting, the bootloader screen will show *unlocked* , warranty voided.
If you unroot again, the bootloader does not show *locked* but * relocked*.
this is a clear indication of unlocking, and as such the service center has a choice of whether they want to prive you warranty service or paid,
Q1 : As soon as you root or unlock and install SU. DONT flash a custom rom. Go to recovery and make a nandroid and keep it safely on PC as well as on phone. This is very useful for future. The nandroid saved everything from settings, contacts, apps logs etc. Its a complete duplicate.
Q2: You cant make an RUU, Nandroid is more than enough. Just make sure you have a copy of it in your PC, cause sometimes the sdcard ma be wiped/damaged.
Q3:You can restore the original recovery which will help you in doing a OTA update. But as i said earlier, even if you restore it to complete factory, warranty may be void depending on area and service center.
Q4: Usually, flashing a new ROM is recemmended with a FULL WIPE meaning no apps, contacts, etc
You can use an app like titanium backup or my backup pro to make a backup of your apps and contacts and then restore after flashing new ROM.
Hope this helps.
Wow, thanks so much for answering all my questions so clearly!
It's a shame about the bootloader *relocked* bit though.
So in regards to Q1, does the stock recovery provide the means to make a nandroid? Or do I need to install Titanium or a custom recovery?
Yes, you need a custom recovery to make a nandroid. You need it to get official HTC ota's.
You need a custom recovery anyway because you need it to install a custom rom/SU
And titanium backup needs root acces, when you want to back up things up before you start messing about i can also suggest the app "carbon"

Ok. So when you install Titanium, are you installing a custom recovery? Or it it just app that requires root access? Or do you need to install a custom recovery to enable root in the first place?
I realise that I will need a custom recovery eventually, like you mentioned. I just wondered if it was a necessity for do a nandroid.

Yeah, I head that CWR Carbon doesn't require root access to make a backup. Is that correct?
Yes titanium backup is an app that requires root acces, therefore its mandatory to flash a custom recovery and push the SU.zip.
Carbon does not need root acces

[Q] Install Stock Recovery

Hi Experts,
i had rooted my phone a while back and installed custom recovery , and was on stock ROM.
Due to issues on official emails, i had to unroot my phone and relock it.
All is fine, however i did miss 1 step, that is, i still have a diff recovery on it, and i want to install my stock recovery back so that i can install OTA.
I do have the stock recovery (i think).
So is theree a quick way to do that without unlocking the bootloader again or without losing any data?
Let me know PLEASE!

As far as I remember you will lose data. Make a backup (Titanium, or similar app) of important data, unlock the bootloader, flash stock recovery, reboot, restore data.
And keep the bootloader unlocked!
damn!! if i keep my bootloader unlocked, i keep getting an error from an anitvirus kinda tool tht i had to install so that i receive my office emails. thanks for your help, will do this when i have a lot of time..
