[Q] Please help with att e980 and 2012 nexus 7 - LG Optimus G Pro

Guys Im doing a simple tablet install in my sidekick, already have the amp and everything wired up.
The phone is a stock lg optimus pro on att, the tablet is a stock 2012 wifi nexus 7.
All I need to be able to do is share data with the nexus 7 so I can use the gps and pandora. And I need it to do this without ATT seeing it. I cant get a data plan because of unlimited data, and I refuse to buy a tablet plan...just so I can use 50mb a month or less streaming pandora when Im riding in the woods.
I suppose Ill deal with the Nexus 7 questions on that forum, but I basically want a near stock rom...the only additions I need are for the tablet to turn on/off when the charger turns on/off.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I havent rooted a phone since the old iphone 3g.

Is Google Now almost useless on Nexus 7

Hi guys,
I am considering buying Nexus 7, however, there is a concern. This tablet is without 3G so it makes some of its functions such as Google now... useless when on road. Otherwise it is a great tablet at great price but I would rather pay 50 bucks more if it has 3G. How do you think guys should I buy Nexus 7?
wrong forum? why are you posting this in the galaxy nexus forum?
Sorry sorry sorry, wrong forum. I am also Galaxy Nexus user so I forgot to post in right forum...how can I move it to Nexus 7 forum???
You can't, however to answer your question, why don't you just tether it to your phone? That way you don't have to pay for a secondary subscription and you still get network access everywhere.
I'm aware that you may need to pay a tethering fee but it can be circumvented and still it'll be less than a secondary subscription.
as Mortenmhp said. Just tether it with your phone and use your phones network.
A moderator will move this to the correct forum when they see it, nothing you need to do mate
Thank you guys for sharing. I also thought about tethering 3G connection from my phone as in my country tethering is not blocked by carrier. However, what is the point of having Google now on Nexus 7 then, when I already have it on my phone. And the dark side of tethering is that my phone's battery will drain faster...Anyway, I think I will buy Nexus 7 but will use it only as a home tablet...only don't understand why Google put Google Now on a non-3G device...as for me Google Now is the most useful only when on the road.

Exactly, why do you need Google Now to work on your N7 when you have it on your phone? I could understand if you were not a Nexus owner but obviously you are.....
Please take this discussion to the Nexus 7 forum.
Thanks

Wifi or wait for LTE?

I'm pretty set on getting the 10.5 S. I'm currently running an ATT LTE Note 8.0 but the lack of updates is way past annoying, especially with the input freezing bug. I like having LTE, I certainly don't want to be completely without it. I'm also still locked in a contract on the Note for another year, the good news is it only costs $10/month so its a minimal issue. So my plan at the his point is to buy the wifi only 10.5 S and keep my note 8 and basically use it as a hot spot. To purchase a hotspot would cost me $20/month so it does make sense to just keep it and use it that way. That can certainly cut down on some portability but I really only use my tablet on LTE in my truck during work so keeping the Note there for for hotspot use is no biggie. And if I do want to take a tablet with me I can always just take the Note 8. Oh, and I cannot use my phone as a hotspot because its a work phone and is locked from doing so.
I guess my point in all of this is that I dont want to enter into another LTE tablet with potential problems that will never be fixed by the cell provider and be handcuffed with a locked bootloader in the community. Atleast when you go wifi only you know Samsung is going to take care of issues and you will stay closer to the front of the line of Android development.

Personally I'm just going to get the wifi version since there will be wifi at the places I mainly go to and in worst case scenario I can tether using my S4. I really don't see a need to get the LTE version and pay more monthly (unless when the devs here find a way to make calls with this and you want to make calls and stuff?)
Why not just tether it to your phone? Tethering to another android device usually doesn't count against a tethering limit.
It has tended to be the case in my Samsung tablet experience that there tends to be more options when it comes to rooting and custom ROMs with the wifi varients vs. carrier tied lte variants. A personal example: I first got an lte AT&T Note 8 due to a promotion that they had at the time. That tablet ended up getting stolen, and I replaced it with the wifi version. Looking back, while it sucked shelling out extra cash for a replacement tablet, my experience with the Note 8 was MUCH better due to the ability to easily root it and a couple of really nice custom ROMs that are immeasurably better than the stock ROM, while I don't think there even are any ROMs that can be flashed to the AT&T locked-down version. I think it's rootable, but that's a relatively recent development for a device that's been out as long as the Note 8 (I think, there's a thread on the subject but I haven't looked at it).
Of course, the my take on the matter is really only relevant if you plan on rooting / modifying the device, or at least having the ability to do so, the wifi variant (or international lte version, I guess) seems to generally be the way to go.
I'm lusting hard after the Tab S 8.4, but I'm going to wait a while and keep an eye on this subforum mostly to see how development goes, and a price drop or sale would be nice when that starts to happen for these. If I end up getting this tablet (seems likely, the specs are pretty much exactly what I was hoping for in the TabPro 8.4), I anticipate that I'll end up getting the wifi version, even if I have the opportunity to get the lte version for the same price (I'm on T-mobile now and they had a promotion where they were selling the lte variants of the Samsung tablets that they had (which sucked when I checked it out) for the same price as the wifi variant with 2 GB free data or something, but not sure if that's perpetual). I now have a Note 3 and Note 8, and I really only use the tablet at home, but if I wanted to use it elsewhere I would just tether it to my phone with unlimited data, and all is right with the world
tl;dr IMO the wifi variant is the way to go so that your device isn't tied to any carrier and likely more modifiable, if you care about that. If this was a major decision that you were making that I completely solved and/or you're ridiculously generous, PM me for my address for pre-ordering purposes
I'd wait to see if the devices are rootable. I imagine that if the specs are close enough, I'd go with a Nexus 8 for the dev support. Failing that, go for the GPE version of Galaxy S.

I would love to see a GPE version of the Galaxy Tab S LTE. I don't know why it's so hard to find an Android tablet with LTE that isn't owned by the carriers so I can get decent updates. All the international versions never support the proper LTE bands. The Nexus 7 LTE is the exception. I also have the AT&T Note 8.0 and the lack of updates is more than annoying.

WiFi not workig, Can't turn on

I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus (Bootloader unlocked and rooted). It was my spare phone so I have not used it in a over a year if not longer. It worked well last time I used it. I have a different spare phone so I decided to give the Galaxy Nexus to my daughter so she can play games and watch vids on YouTube. Charged it, turned it on and Wii will not turn on. It is grayed out. If I do get it to turn on it says "Turning WiFi on" but nothing happens. Wiped the phone, still nothing. Did all 3 flavors of the factory image and still nothing. I am baffled and don't know what to do next. I was thinking of doing flashing radio's but the factory image should already do that. Is it possible the WiFi radio is fried?
Any help would be appreciated by my 7 year old
Thanks

I have the same problem, and a guy from a GSM service store told me that i need to change the entire motherboard for the wifi to work again, because thw WiFi module is not a sparate one on this phone model. I have not decided yet to make thia step, and my phone works only on mobile date for over 5 months

PdaNet & Verizon goBeyond unlimited

So we recently had to switch to unlimited data with verizon due to a house fire. Where were staying (temprarealy) doesnt have a secure networl let alone a good connetion. My wifes phone has the base unlimited mine has the gobeyond. I have a note 8 she has a pixel 2 xl (and she hates it but has it till febuary). The pixel 2 doesnt play well with any kind of tethering when weve tested it. My note works great. I got to gobeyond on my phone cause i generaly use WAY more data then my wife when no wifi is availbe plus mine tethers better. No know I have 15gigs of tethering included but i wanna reserve that for my wifes work lap top when she needs internet on it thats secure but shes not armt work. For me if im down loading a movie or something id like to use pdanet on my laptop to hide the tethering that way i can download my movies in 1080p then hook my laptop upto the hotell tv to watch them till the insurence gets us moved into a rental or apartment where I can get my own wifi network set up. Does PdaNet still do a good enough job hiding its use from verizon so when i use it my pdanet tethering wont come out of my 15 gigs?

Simple Frustrated Noob Question for SM-G960U on AT&T v. 10 Andoid

I've had a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Unlocked for a few years now, I can't remember what I did to it, for some reason I remember doing nothing, because occasionally I still do updates, but my Wifi Hotspot feature is functional.
I bought a new Samsung Galaxy S9, SM-G960U in the hopes that I could have a functional working phone, on the AT&T network which is the only carrier that seems to work out in the country where I am. And WiFi hotspot to be able to use it with my home computer without paying AT&T any more for their BS hotspot feature enablement. I am grandfathered on an unlimited data plan from Cingular Wireless era.
Basically, I just want the phone to work, nothing special, all features and functions, but I want to be able to use the mobile hotspot.
I powered on the phone, put in my SIM, says the software is current, Mobile Hotspot is greyed out and wants me to pay......I remember being down this road before....
I've spent the last 4 hours scrolling posts, trying workarounds, fixes, etc, to no avail.
Do I need to ?
A. Follow the root instructions, and muddle my way through them, hopefully not bricking this new phone and returning it in order to root it, and that will give me what I want?
B. Follow the root instructions, install some new OS, but lose features (80% battery max....no front camera... no future updates...), but get wifi hotspot?
C. Give up on this phone completely, return it, and buy something different that gives me the features and functionality I want without the hassle? (I'm not married to samsung phones, they've just been good for 4+ years each, good battery life and longevity, etc)? (btw I just tried, and returned a Motorola Z3 Play for the same reasons...it looked even harder in the forums than this)?
