Seems to be mixed reviews that some can and some cannot. So what's the deal?
no....the end
Mine will let me but my web browser takes me to a page asking me to sign up for the Tethering service at $14.95/month.
Suppose the answer to the question is technically *yes*
I paid the upgrade for tethering, though I think it is a bit of bait and switch (their literature certainly wasn't clear, and my plan allowed it on my Vibrant with no complaint). But it is too important a function for me not to have. If I were a new customer, I would opt for it as well (unless some other carrier didn't charge extra). Frankly, I don't see why they can't just charge by the gigabyte (why should they care if you are streaming videos to your cell phone or to your PC?), but it seems this is the current convention.

If the carriers can charge you for something they will. It's as if 1GB on PC > 1GB on Phone. I assume that once we get root on these phones we'll be able to tether for free the same way I was able to on my Vibrant.

That should be the case. It's hard to go from 2 years (roughly of course) of using all sorts of awesome roms on the HD2 to this locked up guy. Here's to the future though, cheers.
Yes, I can.
I can. No app needed. Built right in the stock rom
I see another difference from previous tethering on the Vibrant: from the T-Mobile support page:
"When your phone is serving as a Wi-Fi hotspot for otherdevices, you cannot access the Internet on the phone itself."
It seems that it isn't completely true: I can listen to Internet radio, use Firefox, at least some of the time. The Android Market seems to fail consistently, however (just hangs "loading...").
Does anyone understand why this change has been made, or what is it's purpose?
i still don't quite can figure out why some people are able to teather as is without root
yet, some other are unable to teather
it's something in the phone plan that you guys have?, or simply the SIM card? or maybe it's on the account side in Tmobile?
I put the new SIM in my nexus and tethered fine when I couldn't from this phone.

Just tried to tether again this morning, it didn't work. It asks me to now add the plan.... Tethering was working.

I suppose that in order to ask us to sign onto tethering, the data must be going through the phone already, so they must have some filter in place that detects that fact and blocks further data, pending your decision.
Theres definitely something with the sim card. Used the sim from my mt4g and tethering would start and the automatically turn off a few seconds later. Activated the new sim and now it stays on but directs me to the site to purchse the service. Bummer.
We need to root this thing quickly.
Wonder if that's one of the reasons why tmo wants us to use the sim included.

Holy crap. I pay less than that for unlimited data. That's more than half of what a full data plan costs on T-Mobile. I take it not may people buy it. I'm guessing some of the custom ROMs will port over native tethering from the international SGS2. I wonder if T-Mobile flags tethering for people not on a legit tethering plan?
I tried to tether my Touchpad but got the T-Mobile page saying to add tethering. Gotta wait for root to get free tethering and utilize those fast data speeds!
i was doing some reserach on this and figured out how t-mobile does it. if you noticed when you turn on tethering a popup generates and after you enable it the 4g disappears for a bit, apparently in the software the phone disconnect your current apn, epc.tmobile.com and changes to another apn built into the phone software which checks for the 14.99 feature so yea sucks hopefully once root is established we can get around this. if you want to test this turn on wifi tether and then go to your apn and try to select the epc.tmobile apn bubble it will go on and then disconnect immediately
Has anyone tried any other APN's?

Here in the USA, T-Mobile charges $9.95/m for tethering. I chatted with T-Mobile asking them how come I cannot tether (brought to their promo page) and I was told that T-Mobile will be enforcing the T&Cs regarding tethering... that is, it's not allowed unless you pay for it.
I told them that my Vibrant and G2x tethered just fine to what he responded that this will change in the near future. He said that with the introduction of the SGS2 they will start to clamp down on tethering without a tethering plan.
Mind you, this is one T-Mo CSR and I don't know if it will really be policy. However, it's pretty clear that this is the case at least for the SGS2.
Hey Guys, this is my first thread here and I'm hoping ya'll can help! Just got my Arc S yesterday and so far I am in love.
I have had Android phones in the past and they didn't have this "WiFi Hot Spot" feature. My Arc S does have it. I am guessing because this phone was not bought through AT&T and is totally generic, the application didn't get blocked. I enabled it earlier just to test it out and it worked great! I'm wondering if AT&T is going to charge me for the service though... I have PDANet but it totally sucks compared to creating an actual WiFi network.
Will AT&T catch on to what I'm doing and automatically charge me for the service? Will they give me warning?
Or do I not need to worry and the phone is just using my data like normal because the phone was never built for AT&T and they don't know what's going on?
Please help me out on this one! I would really like to use the WiFi hot spot feature at no extra cost beyond my standard data plan.
I didnt really get what u are trying to say well but when u turn ur phone to hot spot for wifi u have to have ur data (operator internet) enabled and the phone will use ur data internet and broadcast it as wifi so who ever connects to ur phone will be using ur operator's internet and u will be charged as normal usage btw i suggest to use operator's internet as hot spot only if u have unlimited internet exess bcoz maybe u will have to play quite alot
I'm asking if my carrier (AT&T) is going to catch on to me and charge me their monthly fee for their tethering/WiFi hot spot service.
If you use the feature you won't get charged.
I read forums of american phones sometimes to improve my English and I came across the thing with at&t's warning.
If you use too much data you might (doesn't happen to all of you) get the "You're in the top 5% of data users bla bla bla" or the one with "You're tethering, stop it or we move you to the tether plan". Also I read that that with changing plans never happened if I'm not mistaken.
So just don't tether the hell out of it and it should be good to go.

You need a tethering plan if you're in USA afaik.
You may want to read this
http://www.pcworld.com/article/226905/android_tethering_free_ride_is_over.html
And also this
http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/18/...-using-unauthorized-tethering-methods-to-pay/
I know this is old news but you will get the picture. I wonder why major US carriers do that, if you pay for data plan I think its up to the person what to do with those data (i.e. 2GB per month, 4GB per month, unlimited etc.)
It seemed that mobile internet is expensive there.
I'm on unlimited mobile data which costs me 999 php (around 23 USD in current forex)
Capped at 1GB per DAY (I dont know if its being implemented as I exceeded 1GB in one day due to english sub anime downloads hehe)
My carrier does not even charge me for tethering on my PC.
With a phone that is not from a carrier you don't need it as it has the tethering enabled without cheking your plan.
Sent from my iPad 2 using Tapatalk
As far as the apps being deleted from the Market that's not an issue because I already have the programs on my phone.
Those two articles seem to confirm what Flo95 said about getting a warning before AT&T actually upgrades my plan. And AT&T no longer has unlimited data plans so I don't know how they would ever know that I was using my 3G connection to make a WiFi hot spot.
With all this info I think it's fair to say I'm safe unless I get some sort of contact from AT&T warning me about data usage/tethering/WiFi hot spot usage.
Is there any fool proof method that works for not being detected for tethering?

The system they use to detect tethering might not be perfected, I got one of those messages while using the browser on my phone.
Interesting, I'm just not trying to take a a chance of being kicked out my contract and I be damned if I'm paying for it... Refuse to go back to sprint

Basically since they came out with the unlimited 4g plan they have started monitoring it closely. There is one way around it that works for a while and if you dont use alot of data they wont detect it. But if you stream alot of netflix and stuf they will figure it out. You have to usd chrome on your computer and then get an app from the chrome store called user agent spoofer it tbink I5 is called. Then you set your user agent to firefox 3 or 4 and you shkuld be good. Actually the best way to do it is to use the android user agent because then it cant tell that you are not using your phone. The problem roblem with 5hat is you lose flash and some other stuff
What does the message say so far this month I have used 6.6 gb and still have about 10 days left on my cycle and last month I used about 4.5 gb. Haven't got a message from them yet
Probably a better way to ensure they can't track you is to set up a VPN on your laptop or tablet, like using your work or school.
Route all traffic through there and T-Mobile should have no way to tell what you're doing. Assuming encryption.

People like you are the reason Unlimited data doesn't exist on most carriers any more, and the reason T-Mobile will probably yank ours before long. That's solid work, way to ruin it for everyone.

That isnt from tethering. I dont tether, data use is from my daughter watching movies and me listening to spotify . And 900mb roms lol.---------> No i lie i use it for mirror link on my head unit
I just tried to connect my S3 to my Cradlepoint MBR-1000. At first it did not work, but then started to. Connected thru usb straight from the phone as a modem, but the data count sent and received are not working in the wifi tether. Don't really care really, but I want to make sure I'm not flagging myself to Sprint, or worse, get a huge bill next month. About a week ago, I canceled my data card as I had not used it for over one year.
Anyone know if I'm good or not? I did a quick look for a router forum here but did not see anything. Thanks
Pick of info screen on the cradlepoint.

I also have a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 still in the box if anyone knows how to share my cells with it. I live in the country and have to keep the phone in a Wilson's booster cradle. Nice out here in the woods, but has it's limits.
It appears Verizon rolled out a silent update disabling FoxFi. I paid for this app and have been using it for several months without issue. Does anyone have a solution to this issue? See the most recent FoxFi Play Store reviews for more accounts of the issue.
Now I need root. This really sucks.

Not sure what happened but I posted about the exact same problem at the exact same time that you did but that thread has disappeared. It is affecting my Verizon Note 4 and my wife's s4. We both have unlimited data but are on separate accounts. I use a lot of data and she does not. 4 G signal is good at -88db and internet connectivity on the phone itself is good. Just can not use it as a mobile hotspot any longer. I did connect my laptop by USB and that is still working. I tried to look at the most recent reviews on playstore like you suggested but can not find any that are recent. Does anyone have any idea what is going on or if there is a workaround?

There is an option to sort by most recent reviews. I read through at least 15 other people discussing the issue within the last 24 hours. USB tether does appear to still be working but it now seems Verizon is throttling my data as well. I have used about 7.5GB this month and my speed has dropped to less than 1mbps and has remained there for over an hour even in the same spot that I was achieving decent speeds just yesterday. Not sure if there is a fix but I'm very unhappy about this as I'm on vacation and a solid 4g connection and hotspot were a huge help. I've been holding onto my unlimited data for years but it appears Verizon is really trying to push the few remaining users off.

I'm showing about 22 mbps on the phone and about 13 mbps on the laptop connected by usb. i used about 25gb in the last month. Just before Foxfi wireless went down my speed was less than 1 mbps. but now is back up. I need to contact the developers because Foxfi USB doesn't recognize that I purchased the key. I can only stay connected so long before it knocks me off and I have to reconnect. This is BS

Let me know when y'all get it fixed I'm going back to my Developer Edition Note 4 Hotspot still working. I was getting tired of Screwing with Kingroot anyway. Sorry Guys................
Edit: Just checked FoxFi not working on Note 2 either
I'm having the same issue too. I have root on my phone and had tried several different hotspot apps (Barnacle, OpenGarden, and some other random one) and none of those worked either. Hopefully there's a way around this. I haven't tried BT or USB yet though. I even went as far as thinking my phone did an update and so I reverted my phone to a backup 2 months ago. Still no go. =/
Has anybody with root checked to see if the native tethering app works if you remove the account check?
I don't have an option to turn off account check, but just tried it and it errored out starting.
Foxfi back up and running
Check your foxfi. ...mine is backup and running as of 8/28/15 420 am

I don't know what happened but mine is back up this morning and running normally. Down load speed at 21 mbps as of 6:45 am EDT. Something must have been going on for there to be so many at once.
I'm still on kitkat. Blocked ota updates it works fine
I confirm that mine is working again. What happened?
Uh-huh mine is back up. Hopefully it was a foxfi thing and not Verizon testing a block

Very strange. Not sure why it's working again. And my speeds are back up a bit over what they dropped to last night (2+Mbps vs. less than 1Mbps for all of last night).
disaster averted
PHEW! glad it started working. i use my note pro 12.2 tablet in the car to tether to my phone and i use the tablet as my GPS (waze FTW!) and my media player (podcasts, music player, howard stern show, etc.). I drive for a living so this would have been a real bummer if i were not able to hotspot.
at first i was worried it was something verizon did, which really freaked me out, because i disabled OTA updates and the such, but glad to find out it was just on FoxFi's part. Luckily i have 2 Unlimited Data Plans and one i use at home in a cradlepoint router and as a backup, i can swap the sim out and put it in one of those little hotspot things.
thanks for all who contributed in this thread.
I can confirm also that foxfi is back up. It definitely wasn't a foxfi thing as i tried 3 other Hotspots (all which required root) and those did not work either. Verizon just trying to mess with us. bah!! I'm just glad we have it back. I know many of us rely on it for backup internet and tablet wifi on the go.
FoxFi is back. Check this out.
