So I've been having this problem for several months now...
1. When I go into the testing menu (*#*#4636#*#*) it currently says LTE/CDMA (auto PRL)
a. When I switch on LTE from the notification pulldown I cannot get a data signal, however voice calls still work. I can leave searching for 20+ mins. for a signal, it never finds one.
b. When I switch off LTE I am able to get a 3g data connection, and voice calls continue to work
2. When I go into the testing menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and switch to "LTE Only" I am able to get a 4g signal, but no voice calls or sms (as expected),.
I've tried a the 3 most recent radio's. I'e gotten 2 new SIM cards. I've tried clean installs of CM. I haven't tried other ROM's, although I'd be open to suggestions if people have no data issues (I like CM a lot though).
Any one else experiencing anything like this?
Thanks for your help!

I've experienced the same problem on newer nightlies, M5 and M6. I formatted /data, /cache, and /system, then install M4. data + voice work right away.
Try switching to CM11 M4.
I upgraded to M6 (then tried M5 after it didn't work) due to bluetooth issues on M4; specifically, none of the advanced features of bluetooth, such as the ability to sync my text/voicemail notifications and display artist/title info on my dash, didn't work with my car. But I'd rather have reliable mobile data service on M4 with crappy bluetooth support than unusable mobile data service on M6 with great bluetooth support.
Edit: this is a toroplus phone on Sprint, btw.

So i rooted my phone over a week ago, and tried out many different roms. Everything was going fine, until i noticed yesterday that i kept losing voice and data connection. I tried updating to the latest radio which was out today 5.09.00.20, but still have the issue.
The only workaround i've found so far is to set the network mode to GSM only. But obviously it's not very practical for a phone like the desire. When i have it on GSM/WCDMA Auto, it keeps voice and data on for about a minute, then i lose it. And when it's on, i still can't make any calls. But i can make and receive calls fine on GSM only.
Anybody have a clue what's going on here? I tried calling T-Mobile, but they were as useless as always. Apparently there was an issue on the 29th, which is now resolved, and they refreshed something on my profile. So i dunno if rooting/flashing my Desire has caused this or if it's some network outage.
I'm currently running the latest DeFrost rom. I've tried SenseFroyo (Opendesire), LeeDroid & i'm now running the official 2.2 sense rom.
I've also been having problems when connected via 3G for the past few days, but only when I'm at home (so I think it's a specific cell). The signal indicator shows a good signal but attempting to use the internet over 3G just times out, and my voice calls keep getting dropped.
Like you I can work around the problems by switching to GSM only.
I think it might not be a problem with my phone though, because I've tried putting my SIM card in my Nokia N95 and the internet doesn't work over 3G on that either (internet works using GSM on N95). I did manage to make a call on my N95 when my Desire was dropping both incoming and outgoing calls within seconds though.
Weird! I'm going to give it a few days and report it to T-Mobile if it's still happening.
It's fixed for me now. I guess it was a network outage
I have Edge access from Vodafone in India called mobile connect. I worked like a charm on stock HTC 2.2 ROM. I finally took the leap after finding HTC is not offering complete Gingerbread.
I found CM7 really good but one annoyance after having some troubles with importing SMSs.
I flashed 7.0.3 yesterday. Everything seems fine except data connection. It works randomly in my home. Works properly outside.
If my make a phone call then it connects and 'E' appears with two bars but only uploading. nothing downloads.
I tried *#*#4636#*#* and in phone information status appears as below when i choose "Enable Data connection"
==========DATA============
StatecInactiveState is connecting to vodafonegprs,1296,40427,www,,,,,,-1,*.
==========================
and after sometime is changes to
==========DATA============
StatecInactiveState disconnected with last try at 7.53PM fail because Radio not Available
==========================
I tried all options under "Set preferred network type" such as GSL Only, GSM Auto (PRL), GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) but none worked.
if Radio is not working then how are phone calls and SMS working !!!
I had flashed latest Radio also after flashing CM 7.0.3.
I read a lot about people losing 2G/3G data connection after switching from Wifi but I don't feel that is the problem with my phone.
Could anyone pls help?
Thanks in advance,
Ashish
I got the same problem. Probably. It does not work anywhere. The phone seems only uploading but it does not do anything, even the icon shows uploading. But no green icon of "H" or "E". I have GingerVillain based on CM7.
Upgrade to the 7.1.0RC release. A lot has been fixed since 7.0.3.
Swyped...
It seems that my APN settings was somehow changed - I had to set it according to my operator settings again. Dont know why or how but it was changed to "disabled_internet" instead of "internet" in APN.
it solved after I played around with radio band by pressing *#*#4636#*#*
I dont know what exactly solved it but after staying online when i was at office and outside, connection has been alive.
HELP
Help with this error: com.android.internal.telephony.CommandExcepti on: RADIO_NOT_AVAILABLE
Periodically I would not receive texts or calls if I leave my settings on GSM/WCDMA/LTE, enabling Data would restore functionality but it shouldn't be necessary for those lower level services.
I had this issue on the last few builds of official CM10.2 and continues on the CM11 nightlies.
Manually switching to WCDMA preferred fixes issues but only H+ service and it's a nuisance to switch each time. LTE quick settings button has been broken in CM11 since it started. Thought I'll ask if anyone's experiences a similar problem and has a fix.
Currently on the MK2 modem, switched last week to try and see if that was the issue from previous one. I've checked the APN and it looks fine to me, I know I've seen a few variations for T-Mobile, maybe there's a better one.

I've recently seen this happen in cm11 when I'm in certain areas, where before updating to the newest nightly, I would get great signal and still send/receive calls/text. Now for it to work properly I would need to switch from 'lte/gsm/wcdma' to 'gsm /wcdma auto' mobile network.
Put on CM11 Nightly (20131218) and I am having issues with handoffs from 4G back to 3G (although 3G to 4G seems to be fine). I can turn off radio and back on and everything is fine, but was wondering if anyone had a better idea about this?

Official nightly
GApps 20131208
Clean flash (format /system, dalvik, cache, and data)
I've since gone back to 10.1 since it seems to be the most stable for data handoffs, but I would love to get KitKat going again.

I'm seeing the same problem with the latest snapshot (cm-11-20140104-SNAPSHOT-M2-toroplus.zip). I plan to switch to CM 10.1 for now, as well, since 10.2 still has known "Issues between 4G and 3G switching".

Any updates would be appreciated.

I updated from CM11 Snapshot M2 to the recently posted Snapshot M3. The 3G/4G handoff problems that I was having in M2 appear to have been fixed in M3. However, the (stock) portable wifi hotspot function isn't working properly for me now with M3.
After some additional testing I've found out that my signal cuts out and has problems reconnecting after activating the portable wifi hotspot (similar to the previous 3G/4G handoff problems). And the my other devices can connect to the portable hotspot but they do not get an internet connection. It appears that turning off the portable wifi hotspot and then toggling data may reset the data connection.
Is anyone else experiencing the same behavior?

I've been having all sorts of data issues lately, even worse I think with M3. But, I haven't cleaned flashed in a while. I hadn't thought to try toggling hotspot--I'll have to try that next time I can't get any data (3g or 4g). Over the weekend I had to hotspot my phone a bunch and since lte doesn't yet reach my house I had to hotspot 3g and that was working just fine. I'd be interested though, if you're consistently having good 4g data or if it was just a momentary fluke for a day. It seems like some days I've had no issues with 4g and other days it's been a bear where I struggle to even get 3g.

yotvb531, your suspicions were right... After 1 day of flawless data handling on CM 11 Snapshot M3, I experienced a hiccup during a 3G/4G handoff. Soon after, the data handoff problems became routine like they were with Snapshot M2 (perhaps worse). Although toggling the data connection would get the network to reconnect, the data connection problems occurred often enough to make me revert back to CM 10.1.3 a day or two later.
I'm now anxiously awaiting the next CM 11 Snapshot, hoping the data connection problems will be fixed.

After not being able to pick up 4G from the snapshot on, and hearing from others that they had 0 issues on a clean flash, I finally spent the 5 hours to clean flash my phone (I also formatted the sdcard while I was at it because I hadn't done that either in a very long time).
Happy to report that ever since then (12 days and counting) things have been very smooth. I've had issues only twice, but based on the behavior I'm pretty sure they are attributed to cell tower maintenance and not my phone freaking out...mainly because it didn't matter what I tried and then hours later after I had given up messing with settings everything started working again and was then fine for a week afterwards...and also after that outage the data speeds went from 1 Mbps to 8 Mbps.
Not saying a clean flash will fix everyone's problems, but it definitely did wonders for me...fingers crossed that when I finally decide to move on from the 2/13 nightly everything will continue smoothly.
There I went jinxing myself! I had to toggle airplane today after leaving work to get 4g to pick up. Was stuck on 3g EVDO. Toggling airplane mode got it to switch over to eHRPD which then allowed it to pick up the 4g. So maybe the hand-offs aren't perfect, but act fine most of the time--in my situations.
That same behavior happened once before on this same nightly (2/13) and I chalked it up as tower maintenance. That was in addition to the other time I mentioned where speeds jumped from 1->8 Mbps and I didn't have to do anything for the lte to return. I think that one was actual tower maintenance; just the other one wasn't...and it happened again today...twice in 14 days isn't too bad but it's definitely not perfect.

If I could get CM 11 to behave like that I'd switch right back to it. My problem wasn't that it would get stuck on 3G, it's that it would get stuck and not have any data connection until I either toggled data (e.g. airplane mode) or restarted. This would happen multiple times per day.
While I always clean flash, I never format my SD card. I assume this step has to be done separately from flashing, correct? Is it a best practice, or can just the Android folder (any others?) be deleted?

I did my internal storage wipe at the same time under advanced wipe in twrp (cache, dalvik, data, internal storage). I don't think it has to be done very often...I hadn't ever done it since the toroplus phone first came out so I had a lot of garbage and hierarchical messes all over the place (the 0 folder in 4.2 that was created...).
I doubt wiping the internal storage has any effect on the functioning of the data hand-offs; but I just don't know either.

Hi guys, now it's time for me to ask a question. In all my years with android I haven't felt so powerless
I'm experiencing a strange behavior with my N5X: I regularly get an error "cellular network not available" when trying to call someone. During that time I'm not able to make calls, receive calls and receive or send sms messages. The strange thing: LTE, H+, H, E or G connections are working during that time.
A reboot fixes the issue for some time, but after some time (minutes or hours) the issue is back. As I said, my whatsapp service and internet connection is available via LTE or similar (depends on the quality of connection), but all GSM services won't work.
I haven't changed the SIM card.
I flashed several different ROMs an kernels.
Thanks
http://imgur.com/a/K0qX2 - here you can see the issue (working H connection but no service)
Update: I removed the SIM card and cleaned it with alcohol, put it back in again and it's working for now.
I have the same problem since a couple of days. I
Will try your trick and report back if it's working.

The issue is back... During a bluetooth connected call in my car, the connection was lost and couldn't be reconnected. "cellular network not available" was shown every time I tried to make a call after that. Internet connection over LTE was fine at the same time...
That's a strange issue. It seems after signal lost it only reconnects data but not cellular.
@Frozen-GPU are you on the newest July update of android? Maybe it is a issue with the radio.

Yes, very strange... I'm on the latest July update with XtraFactory at the moment. However the issue isn't ROM related I think, because I had it with several ROMs and builds since may, if I remember it correctly.
I found some settings in the test-menu *#*#4636#*#* to change for "GSM only" network-mode for example. Maybe that'll fix it.
I switched from LTE/4G to 3G Network in the cellular settings. And the issue doesn't appear till now.
I really think that something in the July update borged it. Before I never had this problem.

I installed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64023143&postcount=10 and switched back to "automatic band select" in *#*#4636#*#* menu. Flashed back to stock and all is working again! Thanks to bitdomo! In the end before I applied the fix, I couldn't get any GSM services anymore. LTE was working. My Nexus 5X was stuck in "USA Band", therefore I wasn't able to fix it without the bitdomo ROM. The bitdomo ROM provides a huge selection of bands, where my stock ROM only showed "USA Band".
I know I'm late to the party, but I was able to fix it by follwing #5 from here: https://www.mytechtipshub.com/mobile-network-not-available-fix-android.html
* Go to the dialer on your phone.
* Dial *#*#4636#*#* from your device.
* A testing menu will appear on the screen.
* In the testing menu, select “Phone Information” from the category.
* You will see an option that says “Run Ping Test.” Select that option on the screen.
* Now scroll down the page where you will find a drop-down menu on the right side.
* Tap it open to see its contents. Click on the option “GSM Auto(PRL).”
* Now further below, you will see an option named “Turn Radio Off.” Select this option.
* Now restart your phone and get rid of the problem for sure.
