I installed a custom recovery before thinking it would have been nice with a backup of my stock recovery...
Been reading and so far as I can tell, the stock recovery I need is the recovery for my ROM version... So if I have sw version 1.54.401.5, I need the stock recovery for 1.54.401.5, correct? Nothing else that dictates which recovery I need?

BTJ

Before Flashing a Custom RoM, I did a backup of the stock RoM in recovery. Am going to need to return stock so O2 can release JB OTA update and allow me to update Hboot.
My question is if I was just to flash back the stock RoM in recovery am I right I dont need to relock the bootloader? I just use the Stock RoM with phone unlocked and custom Recovery just to allow me the OTA?
Thanks
You will receive the OTA, but to apply it you need stock recovery.

You can easily find it with a quick search. Something like endevour signed.img
Sent from my HTC One X
here you go mate
I'm currently running Viper X ROM on my HOX and i want to go back to stock for the JB OTA. I've made a back up in clockwork mod before flashing custom ROM.
Can i just restore the back up or do i need to do something else before? I'm a bit concerned because i had to flash boot.img from Viper X ROM before flashing the ROM itself.
So, do i need to flash boot.img from my backed up folder (stock ROM backup) or can just restore it? Or do i need to do something else?
In order to be able to update you need to flash the stock boot.img from the backup the backup stock rom and the stock recovery .....

so i flash the stock boot.img and in recovery mode restore the backup with clockwork mod?
yes, flash the boot.img boot into recovery and wipe everything except sd card and then restore the backup. After that flash the stock recovery and you are good to go

1: Phone will work with stock boot.img and backup
2:root is rom related not recovery related. The stock rom backup should be root free to receive ota's
3:stock recovery is absolutely necessary to receive ota's
4:stock recovery is related to the main version
Fastboot getvar version-main
Check if it is the 1.29 or the 2.17 version. You need the recovery corresponding to that number. Example if you need the 2.17 recovery you can download any stock recovery that starts with that number !

Stock recovery's can be downloaded from there .

If you made the the backup with the custom recovery you can not use that one because it wil be the custom recovery cwm 5.8.4.0 so that's a no go
You have to download the real stock recovery !

It doesn't need to be root free. It does need to be stock, as in, all the apps are there and unmodified.

Ow yes sorry my bad
I always play on the safe side
so i have stock rom but i have the cwm recovery install i know that i can install back to stock recovery via bootloader but some have complained that after flashing have faced the 'red triangle of doom' and are now unable to either flash the update or in some cases not boot the rom so what is the safest way to do this and what is the best recovery. img file?
What I did was restore a backup of a stock ROM, flash stock recovery and OTA popped up Had no red triangle of doom. Even if you do get that, you can still boot into the bootloader and fix things.
can u post the file wich u used for the recovery?

I have an i747m so getting back to stock recovery can be done by flashing a stock ROM via Odin. Since you have the i747, I don't know of any method to get the stock recovery back on your phone.

Surely there is easier way to get CWM recovery out of phone and back to Stock Samsung Recovery than having to install the entire Stock OS firmware????

I'm really not sure as I have never tried it before. To get back to stock, I have always used Odin to flash the entire ROM.

Wish someone had old i747 with 4.3 could try it and see if the file would get it back to Samsung Recovery 3e.
Seems like it would be possible since you can flash CWM & TRWP on one in place of the Samsung Recovery 3e

One issue with the 4.3 bootloader is the fact that you cannot simply flash back to stock using Odin if something goes wrong.
I think there are different versions of the stock recovery because updated versions of CWM and TWRP are required to flash newer custom ROMs. Also, some phones have different partition layouts. For example, Samsung phones have an EFS folder that can be accessed by an end user while this is not the case with a Nexus 4.

I don't know of a sure-fire way. Whenever a person alters a phone's operating system using official or unofficial methods, there's always a risk that something will go wrong.
Since you have CWM, you could flash a custom Kit Kat ROM? If you want the latest TouchWiz ROM, have a look in the development thread. You'll need the newwest version of CWM to flash Kit Kat.

I prefer custom ROMs because they tend to perform better than a stock carrier ROM in my opinion. I prefer a dark UI which TW doesn't have.
Since you have a custom recovery, you could create a nandroid backup, flash a custom KK ROM, and try it out. If you don't like the custom ROM, restore your backup.

Sorry I couldn't help you more. I went from a stock Bell Canada 4.1.2 ROM to a custom KK ROM.
Have a look in the development forum. You'll see some amazing KK ROMs. If you wait a while, I'm sure you'll see some custom KK TW ROMs based off a stock TW ROM and kernel.

Yes it is. You would need to find and flash back the stock recovery when flashing back to aa stock RUU.
If you didn't install any custom recovery and still have the stock one, you'll just need to relock bootloader and flash RUU. If there's any custom recovery, you'll need to flash the stock one first.
