I'm currently running Viper X ROM on my HOX and i want to go back to stock for the JB OTA. I've made a back up in clockwork mod before flashing custom ROM.
Can i just restore the back up or do i need to do something else before? I'm a bit concerned because i had to flash boot.img from Viper X ROM before flashing the ROM itself.
So, do i need to flash boot.img from my backed up folder (stock ROM backup) or can just restore it? Or do i need to do something else?
In order to be able to update you need to flash the stock boot.img from the backup the backup stock rom and the stock recovery .....

so i flash the stock boot.img and in recovery mode restore the backup with clockwork mod?
yes, flash the boot.img boot into recovery and wipe everything except sd card and then restore the backup. After that flash the stock recovery and you are good to go

1: Phone will work with stock boot.img and backup
2:root is rom related not recovery related. The stock rom backup should be root free to receive ota's
3:stock recovery is absolutely necessary to receive ota's
4:stock recovery is related to the main version
Fastboot getvar version-main
Check if it is the 1.29 or the 2.17 version. You need the recovery corresponding to that number. Example if you need the 2.17 recovery you can download any stock recovery that starts with that number !

Stock recovery's can be downloaded from there .

If you made the the backup with the custom recovery you can not use that one because it wil be the custom recovery cwm 5.8.4.0 so that's a no go
You have to download the real stock recovery !

It doesn't need to be root free. It does need to be stock, as in, all the apps are there and unmodified.

as the title said, this is a good solution to get back to stock and to OTA update.
1- just download the awesome stock rom that made by mike1986 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546970&highlight=htc+one+x+*stock* (remember, the odexed one)
2- upload it to your SD
3- flash it normally as any custom rom using the CWM 5.8.4.0
4- flash the stock recovery which can be found at the same ROM thread (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img)
5- flash the stock boot.img, can be found at the same ROM thread (fastboot flash boot boot.img)
6- reboot
7- after rebooting, go to settings, about, software update
8- enjoy
just remember that it seems that mike's STOCK ROM already the latest updated one, so the update won't work till HTC officially releases the jelly bean.
dont forget the thanks button below
1.) is it necessary to lock the bootloader to install the OTA?
2.) i have a stock nand backup from my rom 1.29.
yesterday i flashed the boot.img from backup and restored the backup. after start my HOX came up with OTA update. so does i neet the original recovery.img too?
if yes which one can i take?
BR
1- actually i think relocking your bootloader is a must when u r running the original RUU, but here this is a stock rom to be flashed from ur CWM.
installing OTA just requires the stock boot.img and stock recovery, no need to relock the bootloader.
2- this is a fortune for me, wish i could have mine as well, then why not to restore it and get ur original OTA?
if your HOX updated the OTA already then no need to stock recovery, BTW your stock recovery can be found inside your origional RUU which can be found on filefactory server, am sure u've seen it before (just google how to extract RUU, then extract your stock recovery from it)

hi
u need to get stock recovery and re lock ur phone or else the OTA wont get installed i just did it today
see this my post on the same : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32368798&postcount=112
so i have stock rom but i have the cwm recovery install i know that i can install back to stock recovery via bootloader but some have complained that after flashing have faced the 'red triangle of doom' and are now unable to either flash the update or in some cases not boot the rom so what is the safest way to do this and what is the best recovery. img file?
What I did was restore a backup of a stock ROM, flash stock recovery and OTA popped up Had no red triangle of doom. Even if you do get that, you can still boot into the bootloader and fix things.
can u post the file wich u used for the recovery?

You can find links to stock recoveries HERE. Choose the one that matches the base rom you are using, ie 1.29, 2.17 etc.
alright guys thanks for ur help i have returned to the stock recovery and flashed the rom thanks for all the help cheers!
Hi, i hope i am in the right place, sorry if not.
I want to root my One X on stock ROM. I currently have 4.1.1, CID HTC_001.
Is it possible to get it rooted while keeping certain things? These things are:
Being able to receive OTA
Keeping all files when rooting
Easy to revert back if i am not able to receive OTA.
Help will be very much appreciated thanks
If you unlock the bootloader with htcdev.com and flash a cwm custom recovery you can make a nandroid backup of the current non rooted rom and keep it in a safe place. You can restore that backup anytime if you want to go back stock.
After that you are able to flash custom roms or just root the one you are running currently ......
You might void some warranty with blocking the bootloader !!!
Tip : ALWAYS DO A NANDROID BACKUP FROM THE STOCK ROM !!!
Thank you

Thanks a lot. Just what i was looking for. I will certainly be doing this at some point. Shame you can't just root it but at least you are able to back it all up safely.
When following any guides
Don't flash the recovery. Just use fastboot boot recovery.img
Instead of fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
This way will leave the stock recovery on your device which is needed to apply any otaupdates

Yes with the taken nandroid you can go back anytime....the only thing you have to remember is that when you took a nandroid backup the recovery of that backup is not stock, so after the restore you have to flash back the stock recovery before you can apply a official HTC update. But you can find that easily.....i have them also
That's great. OTA was something i really wanted, thanks. 4.2 is coming very soon and a possibility of 5. Just one more thing. Do you lose items on the virtual SD or does this not affect them at all?
Well do a full backup of the sd before you unlock the bootloader, it's sets the phone to its factory state and some say it wiped the sd but others say it didn't so that's a grey area for me !
Its probably the safest option, i will do that. Is using the stock recovery just as easy as using the custom recovery too? I read stock recovery and this insecure boot thing and it has a chance of bricking. Also i know a lot of articles are with 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 and 4.1 are different. I think 4.1 is the same as 4.0.4 though.
Well to be honest i'm not a big fan of rooting the stock rom ! I always flash a custom already rooted rom to have benefits of all the hard work that developers has.put into a rom. In my opinion a custom rom is always better than a stock rooted rom. So i don't much about the insecure root things !
What i do is : flash the custom recovery and backup the stock rom (keep that in a vault ) and flash a custom rom to play with !
Stock recovery has no use at all for me, i only need it when i want to update the phone with official HTC releases .....like they did to update to JB
ow and yes rooting and flashing on JB 4.1 are the same as on ICS 4.04
Is it easy enough to go back to the stock recovery though if you have used the Clockwork one?
Yes it will take 3 fastboot commands while the phone is in fastboot USB menu
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
Fastboot erase cache
And the stock recovery is restored !
That's all !
Ofcourse the nandroid has to be restored before that.....you copy the nandroid backup to the phone and flash the boot.img from that nandroid (its inside the nandroid folder) after that you do a full wipe in the custom recovery and restore the nandroid, then you boot it up to see if it runs and after that you flash the stock kernel ! Easy and simple.......and you don't have to re-lock and unlock the bootloader anymore, it can stay unlocked the whole process
That doesn't sound too bad... Thank you very much for the help, i will certainly be having a go. Sorry for some of the stupid questions, i am quite new to all this. Bricking is the only worry for me, if i can avoid that, i'm happy . Thanks again.
No problem mate ! I was already helping somebody else tonight.....multitasking it is !
Hahaha. Well i won't be starting until i can get my hands on another laptop as my current is in a poor state. Damaged hard drive. can run very slow at times. I tried transferring SD to memory stick. But it was running at a painful speed so i stopped it Tomorrow i should be able to get another one to backup my things onto.
Hi guys.
Today I finally received an OTA upgrade from ICS to JB Android. I made a backup, then from settings i let system to update my ROM. It's going good so far, but when it's rebooting, it's going to recovery where the process is stopped. I have unlocked bootloader and rooted my HOX, but still i have a stock ROM. I tried to toggle off checking signatures in cwm but with no result. What can I do to keep root and upgrade to JB?
Thanks.
1. Stock ROM
2. Stock kernel
3. Stock recovery
Make sure you haven't removed system apps. Root doesn't matter.

And make sure to put back the stock recovery

You can root again by flashing your custom recovery AFTER updating to JB.
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
So, at start I have to flash stock recovery. Have I to relock the bootloader? Then I'll update to JB. Of course I want to root, so just flash custom recovery and su? Thanks in advance
Make sure the rom is stock, then flash the STOCK recovery and update the phone, then flash a custom recovery back and root the JB rom again. No need to lock the bootloader !
You must mean stock recovery correct?

You downloaded my stock recovery and renamed it to recovery.img ?
Recovery from a nandroid is never a stock one, a nandroid backup can only be done with a custom one
Uuuups, what a mistake Thanks! I'll try to flash yours one.

There are two ways to do that: Flash the a stock rom or use the official RUU(ROM Update Utility). Flashing the ROM will keep your phone rooted, but in order to use the RUU you have to relock the bootloader and your phone will not be rooted anymore.
You can find the files (ROM's and RUU's) here. I only used the last one from that list (RUU_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.26.401.3_Radio_47.23e.35.3038H_7.57.39.10M_release_261695_signed.exe). Didn't try flashing a rom.
In order to install the RUU, first you have to install HTC Sync (for the drivers), then you have to relock your bootloader using bltool. Just boot into recovery, flash the zip, and select LOCKED or RELOCKED, then reboot, connect the phone to your PC and run the RUU. You might have to reboot into bootloader if it won't work at first and install the RUU while the phone is in bootloader mode.
Download a cwm flashable stock rom and flash it
