[Q] help Debrand S4 mini GT - i9195 with out rooting or custom Rom? - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I have the Samsung Galaxy s4 mini (GT-i9195) on EE in the UK, I am wanting to know how I debrand the phone with out rooting it or putting a custom Rom on it. (main reason I don't know how to and don't want to mess up)
From what I have seen I just do the following
Unlock the phone. (code from EE), then use Samsung's kies to update the firmware from EE's 4.2.2 to Samsung's 4.4.2 KitKat.
If I get the code from EE, is it just that simple? I enter the code and it unlocks to any network provider, meaning I can use kies to update the firmware and debrand the phone? or am I missing some step's?
Again I do not want to root the phone or put a custom Rom on it as I want to keep the warranty and have OTA updates as well as keeping the 'flash counter to 0'
Thanks for any help you can give me sorry for the n00b questions.

Hi fburgos,
Would that set KNOX to 0x1 if I was to use odin?

First of all is your firmware a Knox?
What's you're firmware version, is in your download mode the word Knox?
To enter in Odin mode or download mode, shut down phone while off press power button and home and volume down at the same time then release power button and wait until a screen appears release and Pres volume up.
If you have Knox you have to flash a rom with same bootloader version or latest
Don't flash anything if you're not sure what you're doing

Hi Fburgos,
Like I said, I tried saferoot found on this forum, and it wont let me root my phone as it comes up with "kernal has been patched" im using the GT-i9195, this is the device info again, this time from a screen grab. As you can see we are not using the same firmware,

Was super su installed?
I had problems acquiring root access, had a knox notification, just long pressed the notification an force close, then force closed all knox apps and open supersu disabled knox then freez all knox in titanium backup

Hi Fburgos,
No nothing installed, when I ran the .bat file, it stoped installing as my kernal has been patched so the saferoot wont work on my phone with the buildnumber I have, it looks like I am just going to have to root it and not worry about the Knox problem.

That is bad news, i think you wait until warranty expire, soon the update to kitkat its suposed to come to your device, just wait.

Hi fburgos,
Yeah looks like waiting for EE to update to KitKat is the safest way to go, and who knows in 2 years when my contract ends there maybe a saferoot for the S5 mini (when it comes out lol)
thanks again for all the help and advice you have given me, I really do appreciate all of it.

Any update on this? I'm getting an S4 Mini on 3 that I'd like to debrand. Don't want to de-bloat/root/whatever, just flash a debranded ROM. possible?

Hi, just flash any stock rom you want. If you are from UK there is unbranded BTU kitkat version. Download it from sammobile.com and flash it by Odin. Its only a few simply steps to get it done.

I have a Three branded PAYG i9195. I was looking/hoping for a script to remove the carrier customisations such as:
- custom startup logo
- custom lockscreen
- "3" apps
- anything else the've messed with!
is flashing a stock rom the only way?
is there a CWM flashable version of the stock UK 4.4.2 rom please?
edit: i think this is latest stock rom http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/39326/I9195XXUCNK1_I9195BTUCNK1_BTU/
but i can't even see how to download, nor do i have Odin (Linux), and would prefer not to risk flashing it with Heimdall as i alread have CWM.
edit2: this appears to be what we want: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48063831
not sure how to flash modem with Heimdall will need to check that!

Flash Roms Without Tripping Knox 0x1!

Hi everybody!
I was reading one of the Note 3 forums on XDA and noticed that zroice made a tool to help flash roms without a custom recovery!
I haven't seen it mentioned here, but I figured that it may be prudent to make a public service announcement here, as well as let the rom developers here know about it. Who knows? They may even make a release of their rom or roms with native support for this tool, for one click installs!
You can find it @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2550120.

it says it doesnt involve custom recovery or custom kernals (which trip knox). There currently is no solution to those knox issues as of this point

There is also the issue of Aroma Installers in Roms. Most of the ROMs we find here use Aroma. Since you can't choose what you want, you'd need to move the files for your choices by hand and run the script again.

I tried several roms on my Sprint variant Note 3. The only one that seemed to come close to working was freezas stock rooted MJ4 rom. The only thing was that the direct input would stop as with Samsung keyboard force closing. Tried Jellybomb and Bonsai too with no luck at all.

Yes. It is. There was a guide on how to use MOP (Mobile Odin Pro) to flash without tripping Knox. Kn0x0ut is more or less unsupported now, since MOP supports AROMA too and deprecates it.
The problem is that MOP doesn't support our model, and neither does safestrap, which isn't necessary due to our phone having an unlocked bootloader. So, the only way at present is to use kn0x0ut.
You can force MOP to believe you have a different model phone. It may actually allow you to flash a tmobile Note 3 as if it was the international variant. However, I'm reluctant and a bit fearful to do that. If someone else wants to try, let us know!
MOP now supports our phone model.

The AT&T safestrap works perfectly for our phone as well. So we have a few options.

Yes, but MOP supports AROMA AFAIK and Safestrap does not.
There was a link on a guide to use MOP without tripping Knox and allowing to use AROMA. I wonder if I can find it?
Yes, MOP supports Aroma fine. Just make sure to choose stock/unmodified kernel when going through the Aroma installer. Both options have their benefits.

I rooted using this method while still on 4.1.2 and it worked flawlessly.
I then paid for and installed SuperSU Pro and activated "Survival Mode"
Lastly, after the OTA update was COMPLETELY finished, I followed this simple procedure to get root back again.
SuperSU disables Knox for you on 4.3 which is also nice. I should have qualified here that I am COMPLETELY stock other than root. I have not "frozen" any apps., deleted any Samsung provided files, etc. and I have stock bootloader and stock recovery. This will likely NOT work if you have done any of those things.
Is there a flashable version of this? If not, can somebody make one? Thanks.
I'm running a custom rom and rollouts/updates from vendors freak me out because I don't trust not one of them. Knowing AT&T they have thrown in some bit of encryption that locks the bootloader. I understand this might not be the case this time but I do know none of them can be trusted.
Now if you excuse me, I'm 1/2 done with 1984 the book and my tin foil hat is making me itch.
Guys I need help I am stuck, I am using unlock att with tmobile, I check software update but it days interrupted, and I even tried with kies but it's not connecting at all, I tried 2 pcs.... Any help... What to do to update it... Please

I have a few questions for you and/or those more in the know:
If I were to do this same thing, would I be able to flash a custom recovery (like TWRP) and/or flash custom ROM's/Kernels like I can already do now? One of my main concerns is that the stock kernel doesn't support Boeffla Sound, and that really makes for better audio on this device...might as well take full advantage of that Wolfson DAC...
I have to admit, it would be nice to be able to use pure AT&T stock, but rooted, as a base...this is why I loved the old CleanROM AT&T SE so much...
TIA for any guidance you can give on this.
Side note: after ODIN'ing back to 4.1.2 MA4, it says I have a 741MB update I can take....I'm sure that's this 4.3 update...Culpeper, VA here.

I did the same as marchusdavis but it resulted in a total disaster. After I downloaded the OTA update from AT&T I restarted my phone and it installed through CWM-Touch. At the end it asked if I wanted to ensure root was maintained and of course I said "yes" there (as well as through my SuperSU Pro Survival Mode). When it booted, my WiFi no longer works AND I lost root.
If anyway has any advice on how to get to a stock 4.3 from here please let me know!
Ugh, having trouble updating atm.
Goes up to 30%, then my phone reboots and says
"The update was interrupted" or something like that
On stock 4.1.2 rooted with stock recovery if anyone can help.

I don't believe so, as I am completely stock, bootloader and all. If you want to install other ROMs, you'd need to use a different method I believe. Likely downloading this update either via Kies or something else, and use ODIN to do everything. If you search around a bit on XDA, you'll probably find someone who has done it successfully and posted how. While I like custom ROMs, I have not had a need to use one yet on this device. However, if Samsung doesn't eventually give us Air Command, that might be enough to make me try it!
Is it possible to get the official update from the leak or do I have to downgrade to 4.1.2? I tried updating from the leak but it said it's the latest version.

Okay here's the deal mj5 is a 4.3 bootloader which is knox free and one can downgrade right back to 4.1.2 but issue using mj5 (or any other 4.3 KNoxed bootloader) is that phone cannot be charged on 4.4.2 when powered off it will power on if you try so.Get into download mode and see if it says "Knox warrant void 1" if it says that then you should upgrade to the latest kitkat bootloader which is ND 3 ,you can power off your phone and charge it while using Kitkat TW rom. Also you can use custom ROM which are 4.3 based. Here's the link to ND3 and how to flash bootloader.
If you are under warranty it will be void cause KNOX will be triggered if it hasn't already for you so beware.
ND3 bootloader
How to flash Bootloader via pc odin
Just checked dowload mode and there where no reference to Knox. Just custom binary counter readings and system status modified. So it should be safe to flash mj5 with out fear of loosing efc/imei.
The thing is that i dont remember have i been using later bootloaders than mj5. Thats why im bit conserned to flash it.
Thanks for your suport so far.

MK4 is the bootloader after mj5 ,mj5 is knox free 4.3 bootloader which worked really well with 4.3 aosp/tw and 4.4.2 aosp rom,it works fine with the 4.4.2 tw builds as well except that none of the 4.3 bootloaders (mj5 and higher) can charge the phone when powered off if you are running 4.4.2 TW rom. Many like myself are sticking to mj5 and shunning from flashing the knoxed bootloader cause charging phone by turning it off is not a deal breaker to us,since you are mk4 you already triggered knox so you're warranty is void so might as well upgrade to ND3 bootloader after flashing 4.4.2 TW ROM

Thanks mate it was really helpful
But now some questions!
Should I upgrate to nd3 bootloader?or this upgrating(going to 4.4.2) gives me nd3 bootloader automatically?is nd3 better than mk4?
Is it worthy to flash a 4.4.2 rom? When there's no completely official based release?
Thanks for your help

If you care about warranty then don't upgrade ,if you don't care about warranty (warranty is expired) then upgrade to ND3 bootloader. No the ROMs won't give you the bootloader, only the modem which is ND3 (i flashed it this morning and got the newest modem and still on mj5).Well nd3 is pure kitkat tailor made bootloader anything prior to that is for JB hence this charging issue we face when phone is turned off while on KK TW ROM.it's officially released for a week now ,france got it first so all the 4.4.2 TW roms you see on the thread are from the french version,Indian version released today on sammobile and some people are getting OTA in India, they are both the same only difference is in modem. So now ball is your court as to what you would like to do,wait around for sometime more or jump the Kitkat bandwagon

Well it seems that flashing 4.4.2 has cleaned your counters. Do you still have guarantee? If not then you are all good. And welcome to the Knox club. Now you can't downgrade bootloader Nor going back to 4.3 or 4.2.1, but who wants to go back.

Brightness bar problems
Hi guys.
I have strange problem after flashing ND3 bootloader on my Note 2 with 4.4.2 ARHD 30.0. The brightness bar in notification bar is not appearing even when the brightness control checkbox is checked in toggle settings. It was always fine before changing the bootloader. Wipe data/cache/dalvik is not helping. Maybe revert to MJ5? (As I assume that it was the one on ARHD 30.0)
Thanks in advance.
Download link is broken.

There are two bootloaders that you can choose. One is MJ5 which is knox free and will not trigger knox nor void your warranty (but phone cannot be charged when turned off) v/s ND3 the latest Kitkat bootloader which will trigger knox void your warranty (phone can be charged when turned off). You need to flash either of the bootloaders to get wifi working.Another alternative to get wifi working on custom rom which i learned few weeks ago ,flash DN3 rom , then flash latest agni or nadia kernel for kitkat and you'll have wifi working.Custom kernels have some sort of wifi drivers which enables wifi to work properly.

Actually all the current 4.4.2 custom roms are stable,it all comes down to what features you're looking for in them.Whether you want S5 look and features or want to stick to stock N2 rom look with some stuff tweaked. So it's hard to tell you "awesome stable" ROM.Try a few yourself like a week each and then see which suits you the best.
Regarding which bootloader like i said the pros and cons of the two bootloaders I myself upgraded to ND3 after being on MJ5 cause i don't care about warranty and sooner than later we all would have to upgrade to ND3 and i am not going to downgrade back to 4.1.2 (if you flash mj5 you can go back to 4.1.2 rom).So just take your pick, both bootloaders are fine.

MK3 is newer than MJ5 and it is most likely a knoxed bootloader so you cannot go back to 4.1.2 you can only flash 4.3 and 4.4 ROM.Only reason to ugprade to ND3 is if you want to charge your phone by turning it off which is not possible on any 4.3 bootloaders. We might not see anymore updates from samsung when it comes to major android release from google cause google announced earlier this year that they will stop supporting phones after giving them upgrades to two android versions so our phone originally came with 4.1.1(mine came with 4.1.2 since i purchased it much later) then 4.3 and now 4.4.2 so the most we might get is 4.4.3 but that's only a bug fix update if any.So in my suggestion stick to MK3 bootloader and see how your phone performs especially wifi/bluetooth and if it's stable when you flash 4.4.2 ROM

Bootloader cannot be downgraded just so you know so once you flash ND3 you'll be on ND3 unless a newer bootloader after ND3 is out.

You can stay on it as long as you don't feel the need to charge your phone by turning it off or in worse situations your battery is 0% when you plug in your charger the phone will boot up and not go pass the splash screen cause the phone doesn't get charged during that period so you'd have to boot into recovery and charge your phone for sometime before turning it on and booting into the ROM but if you never let your phone battery die on you or dont care to turn off the phone to charge your phone stick to MK3 dont bother upgrading.

Hybrid SIM (2 SIM + SD card) not working... :)

Hi everyone!
Today I got the new system update for my Galaxy S9 DUOS (SM-G960F)... Long story short, I was using my DIY SD card + SIM before, and it was working perfectly, but after this update, looks like that our friends from SAMSUNG don't like this "hybrid" stuff on their devices
To me it's not a problem to use only 2 normal SIM cards, w/o the SD card too, but I got used to it, so I needed to get rid of the 'hybrid', go to my carrier branch, and request from them to issue me a new SIM card...
So guys, If you are using this 2 SIM + SD card ("all-in-one"), make sure that you don't update your phone, or otherwise you will loose the "DIY" stuff (to call it like that).

Dual SIM + SD error after last upgrade
Hi guys,
Same problem here. I had to took off the 2nd SIM card+MicroSD for the phone to work...
But I need my second phone number and the microSD !!!
Please let me know if there is any solution and I'll post here if I find one!
I think the solution must be a software upgrade that would fix this bug...

Well, seems like that we cannot do that much... I think that there must be some "fix" for this, but root will be required, which in my case I don't want to root my Galaxy.

Same problem here - and I just bought the phone to replace my S7. I've put the card combo in first - all ok - then updated the system... Now I'm downloading an older firmware from sammobile and maybe I'll be able to downgrade. I'll keep my fingers crossed waiting for the download (yes, the slow one) to finish....
The only way is to downgrade it to the previous firmware.

Hi. First you download Odin. Then you download the firmware G960FXXS1BRF3 from www.sammobile.com and use Odin to flash your phone. Afterwards the status will read "custom" but Google Pay still works so it's not really rooted. Google for ways to flash your phone and you'll find detailed explanations. It did work for me so that I can put the 2 sims and an sd card in but I'm stuck with older than the most recent firmware. For the moment I hope.
Hope this helps a bit. Wishing you best of luck in reverting to the previous firmware.
Cheers!

I did that on s7 a few days ago and nothing got tripped and the status stayed official. Did on S9 now and Knox is not tripped but "custom" is there in the device status. I can still use Google Pay so I'm guessing Knox is not tripped. The only things I did on the S9 was to switch on developers options, change the USB debugging option and flashed the firmware with Odin. That is absolutely it.
If you download to the previous firmware (June) will it stop OTA upgrades in the future? Also will Samsung Pay still work?
Any solution found to this problem of two SIMS and a micro USB other than downgrading?

Installing official signed firmware should never trip KNOX. KNOX only trips when an unsigned ROM is flashed.
Yes, theoretically it is correct, but we need a certitude in order to start downgrade from BRF8 to BRF3, downgrading from one official firmware to another it will change status phone from Official to Custom ?
In my case, latest BRF8 (that firmware with infamous limitation), and in order to use again both sim and sd card I'm tempted to proceed to downgrate at BRF3, I have CSC ROM (multi CSC), flashing with Odin will preserve CSC as it is right now, or it will change it ?

So, in brief, feel free to downgrade

What is you'r CSC, if you can tell !
You are now on BRF3 or lower ?
