[Q] Can I root update-kindle-8.4.8_4849120? - 8.9" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm picking up a used Kindle HD 8.9. I'm not sure what version of SW is on it, but can I root and install Playstore on update-kindle-8.4.8_4849120 in case it's at the latest already?

yes its rootable and such(all amazon os versions are on the 2012 hd's), though personally i would just flash a custom rom on it, but yea its rootable and can use the playstore with stock os.

That's what I was hoping. I'm getting a good deal on it, and I love the idea of a custom ROM, but I actually use some of the Kindle-specific features, such as having the device read to me, etc. which I use quite a lot, and I'm afraid I'd miss them too much.
Is the later version of the Fire OS just as laggy as the earlier releases? That's the only real criticism I've seen that would bug me.
Do I need root to use the Playstore, or can I just sideload an apk of the Playstore app?

You have to root for the play store because part of it is a system app. The later versions of fire os got worse in my opinion, they disabled wallpaper from working and my fix is one of the only ways to get it working on the newer versions and its a little buggy itself. I believe cm has some kinda reading ability but idk the extent of it because I have never used it. I can vouch for the cm ROM as I came from cm 10.1 to cm 11 recently and man was there a difference in speed, much much faster. I can't really tell if amazon os was fast or not as I haven't used it in a while, probably about a year.

So, in your view, how is CM 11 now on the 8.9? I'm debating whether to flash it or not at this point.

I can only vouch for what I have used on the 7" model, but considering they are both updated quite a bit they should both be about the same, I have to say it is awesome, my only regret is Google took out the tablet navbar from the code and cm hasn't added it back in as a feature(it's not hashcodes fault in the least). If you haven't ever seen a tablet navbar then just forget I said that as the configuration night he standard navbar is about the same as Amazon's minus the fact its got android looking buttons. I just personally don't like having to use 2 thumbs to hit my soft keys.

Do you mean that the Kindle CM 11 doesn't have a full-screen immerse mode? Is the navbar not configurable?

It has full screen immersion, I love that feature BTW. And the nav bar is configurable was just talking about this(this is from my cm 10.1 days):
Could only find a portrait screenshot, could a sworn I had landscape pics too...

So, there's no way to blend the on-screen buttons into the UI (not sure how to describe it) as I've seen on other devices?

If you are talking about what is seen in my pic the answer is not yet, Google removed the code necessary for that style navbar + status bar and cm hasn't added it back in, I think some people in the kf1 forum were attempting to. It is just a kitkat thing in general, not sure of PAC ROMs have it or not but I still recommend cm 11 despite this. Personally I mainly just liked this layout because it didn't require the use of both thumbs to reach for the buttons.

stunts513, did CM10.x have tablet mode? I seem to remember having to go to SGT7 to get that tablet nav bar.

sorta, it had the nessassary frameworks and such to enable it, but it required some patching on the cm 10.1 and 10.2 builds, i never made a patch for the 8.9" hd, but i think some of the other roms could do it but i don't remeber, think like pac rom and such could but i don't recommend using the older cm 10.2 and 10.1 based builds, the changes that were made sped them up and made them much much much less buggy so i really recommend using a cm 11 based build, i've gotten used to the normal ui, still am hoping for a patch though myself.

I'm with you on that. I'm on PA 4.4 beta1 as of today and probably the one feature I'm waiting/hoping Google will give us back is the tablet nav+notification bar.

just in case
I just flashed this, so not much to say at the moment, but it works. I'll update this post as I use it more.
It'd be nice if you can get the CM10.1 keyboard. The stock keyboard doesn't allow long pressing for numbers and symbols.
Is it just me or are the keyboard clicking sounds different? Anyway, this thing is slippery fast. I like it.
I just restored back to CM10.1, but then I already missed the smoothness of this ROM. lol. Really enjoy this ROM. I hope you stay around.
Didint flash this based on using all the roms available right now, the biggest issue is wifi not reconnecting after sleep. I'm currently on jellybro. It's the most stable and reliable, well some nightly releases are better than others. The available oc kernal is not entirely smooth or bug free. So if you can somehow fix or create a rom with a good custom kernal, you have something going here.

I always feel like I'm setting up a tent in someone's living room when I go into a forum like that. So I start small and try to get a feel for it. It didn't seem like there was any lack of ROMs and I misread the couple comments I got I guess. Thanks.

Well, there are definitely a lack of ROMs on the N10. There may be a total of at most 10 ROMs (and I think that number is more than there really is). The N10 is a great device that isn't seeing the developer support that I expected it to see. Yeah, it's a tablet, but I was expecting to see much more variety for a tablet that a lot people consider to be the best Android tablet on the market. So, the lack of ROMs is disappointing, and when I see a dev like you whose fantastic work I've seen on the GNex venturing in to the N10 forums, I definitely welcome it and most certainly desire it.
Your ROM will definitely help the N10 developmental and consumer community grow, so seriously stick around!
Also, I watched Muzzy in German when I was in high school.
I was so confused when I saw MMuzzy ROM in the N10 thread. Thought I had clicked on the GNex thread. Haha.
I've been running your rom on my GNex for several weeks. Can't wait to flash this and see how it goes.

LOL I think I've watched about two episodes or so of Muzzy. I don't remember much but I just remember that there were a royal family of mice and that evil guy who clones the princess and my God, I wasn't even sure what I was watching at that point.
And yes, the N10 screen is absolutely great. I just wish the colors were a bit more saturated (a teeny bit more), but regardless, it's a great device.

I just notice Craig Gomez had a ROM in here. If I had seen that earlier when I was trying to decide I wouldn't have bothered. That's the ROM i'd run if I had a Nexus 10. He's helped me out countless times with all sorts of technical issues.
Haven't flashed yet but I'm right about to, its great to see another well known dev here on the N10 forums making us all a fantastic new ROM! I have heard only good things about you and your work mmuzzy, thanks for starting up here with us! I'm sure all us on the N10 forums will greatly appreciate your work into this build and will be excited to see future releases from you. Thanks again man!!
downloading now thanks for the great sounding rom. have your gnex rom on my wifes phone right now and about to rock this on my n10. im gonna wipe my internal "SD" as im being plagued with either not charging sometimes or tablet wont wake up. ive been loyally flashing PA's rom with every update and i think its time to try this bad boy out. as the others have stated, will post any discrepencies i find, if any.
I'm going to flash your ROM too! It looks to be exactly what I'm looking for: clean, fast, and stable. Until I really get a feel for my new Nexus10, I'm not ready to fight with some pre-alpha, nightly ROMs at the moment. Just wanna cruise on a buttery highway for a while! From previous Android 4.3 builds at around 99mb to 140mb for 4.4... What's the extra that is included?
So for anyone trying this, here's my results after a little trial & error
Latest twrp didn't flash, aborted installation, error 7, etc..... In the n4/mako threads the majority of users were having this issue (worked fine for me). twrp for mako has been updated, but still waiting on a manta update
In the meantime i went over to cwm recovery thread. Haven't used that in ages and it seems there may be issues with some of their updates in general. There are flashables available for the last several versions. Here's the one that worked for me:
Clockwork_MOD-6.0.3.8-Touch-manta.zip
edit: just now signing in, everything booted well....happy flashing!

Went ahead and no problems so far (FCs with a couple of apps, but I guess that's to be expected coming from 4.3). Yeah, the keyboard popup with the Google launcher is annoying as hell. Went directly to Nova. And I hope TWRP gets updated soon. Not a big fan of CWM.
Edit: CWM recoveries are written to the system partition, correct? So they're not accessible with any ROM/Nandroid management app?

How to align softkeys/navigation buttons to left?

Is this possible? I love to hold mine landscape but I swear I'm jacking up my left thumb everytime I reach for back and home.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
If you install paranoid android or PAC ROM which supports hybrid properties, you can enable tablet UI which combines the navbar and status bar in one. Navigation buttons on the left, status on the right.
Google images of paranoid android tablet UI to see what I mean.
Check out full!screen and PieControl...works on stock, just need to be rooted.
Ill give those a look.
Not particularly in the mood to play rom switching just yet on it. Id like stockrom with that. I saw a tutorial on it, but too much hassle of mixing files and breaking stock launcher.
Already rooted, no issues with that.
I really fail to see how having the buttons spaced out, center aligned has become the accepted norm.
I'm indifferent on status bar on top, consolidating is fine, not important.
But jeez, my left thumb is killing me from stretching over.
I really like Pie. I have it set on the left edge, non centred (so it appears directly below my thumb). Even less movement of your left thumb than you were asking for!
I use the one in the ROM, not the standalone app. Anyone tried both? The app seems much more customisable, but does it lag much because it's an app?

[ROM][4.3.1][RC/NIGHTLY][OFFICIAL]P.A.C True All in 1 ROM - Flo/Deb [18/10/13]
What you smoke in your spare time is up to you. Do you have flo or deb? I've heard deb doesn't work too well, no modem support, but the focus is on the 4.4 build right now rather than getting it to work on 4.3.

Many thanks. Ok, WTF am I smoking. I saw the Android Development thread and was all in there, tried an AOSP, etc.
I saw the original android dev thread but some reason associated it in my head as original Nexus 7.
Yea I believe I have Flo, that should be the 16gb wifi only.
No worries. Yeah flo is the wifi only one. I have the same model as you, and am running PAC. Word of warning, the last 'stable' RC is actually unstable. Go with a nightly.

I was reading that Paranoid Android was leaning to go away from the tabletui, so I would guess PAC would be similar.
Any big differences so far with PACs 4.3 vs Kitkat?
Since I just got it I put the rooted stock KitKat in first thing so I don't know what I'm already used to vs going "down" to 4.3
Do you have a link to this? The hybrid properties has quite a few settings, tablet UI mode, dpi settings etc. I'd like to know what they're talking about. I have the navbar hidden anyway.
I haven't tried 4.4 yet, so I can't give an opinion. But from what I've read, most of the UI changes are in the google experience launcher not kitkat.

Its as if they dont anticipate people holding the tablet in landscape with both hands and doing mostly thumbs.
Maybe it's because I'm a gamer from the NES/Nintendo days and treat it like a controller.
Are we really supposed to hold with one hand and stab away with our index?
Enable Pie. I just re-enabled the navbar for a little while to remember what it looked like. Even with the buttons aligned to the left, it felt so far away in comparison to Pie. If you're likening this to a game controller, it's like the buttons are right under your thumb.
I'm disappointed Google's removing tablet UI. It's not just the navbar, but a different layout to a number of apps such as Settings.

Just to add some news here
Oppo N1 offscreen gesture support has been implemented
so you can expect this to be included soon in the nightlies
To all who dont know what that is all about:
The N1 (and also the find5) touchscreen supports gestures
drawing while screen is off. Aside from the "well-known"
"double tap to wake" there are
drawing a "V" will toggle the torch
drawing a circle will start the camera
II, > and < can be used to control music playback
All of this doesnt have any effect on battery cause this is
built-in into the touchscreen firmware. So it will stay in low power mode
until such a gesture is fully detected.
I'll likely use this for some customization until I can get ColorOS on KitKat.

Nothing has been posted either here, nor on the oppoforums official thread, have the latest nightlies been showing good improvement? I just got my N1 and haven't had a chance to check much out either with this or CM.

Both Omni and CM are working very well on the N1. CM hasn't really taken off for the newest builds, but we should have CM11 soon. We're still on CM 10.2 at this point, but Omni is on KitKat, so that's a little nicer at this point.

Thanks you for the reply. I'll have to give both a shot just to see how they run. What's the custom kernels looking like? Think there will be any? Want to try out an aosp rom. My music soon will not open at all on CoS

Nothing custom released yet (that I've seen anyway). I'm sure we'll see more activity on that as more phones get into the wild.

We've got a pretty decent kernel as it is thanks to maxwen. Unlike other devices where there are gloryhounds lone-wolfing, nearly everyone working on the N1 is working together (other than Cyanogen, Inc - they're on their own.)
Hello Entropy512. Is it posible to get a list of features that are working and not so I know what I will miss when installing the nightlight.

Everything is working except:
Host Card Emulation (this is a kitkat-specific feature so you won't "lose" it - you just won't gain it)
O-Touch (back touch panel) integration is still in review on gerrit. The solution CM used is OK but a little flaky - it fails in many cases (Chrome, reading an email). Right now IF you enable the back touch panel in device specific settings, it acts exactly like a secondary touchscreen, which can get annoying.
Maxwen is working on integrating O-Click support. It's not included yet I believe.
In some cases, there are some weird graphics issues in Chrome (extreeeeemely slow refresh of the screen) - not always. It's one of my top priority issues right now.
Everything else should be working, it's my daily driver device.

While your idea of loading gapps in system has merita i still prefer loading very few of them.. Ad in banks gapps minimal.. But some problems are reported in the banks gapps forum with omni .. Are they solved for the n1 .. Or do you think a less extensive working package exists somewhere..
I would love to delete things like maps play books talkback.. What deletes are inoffensive in tour opinion i use google sync playstore YouTube and chrome beta never ever the rest of the bunch.. Flashing other launchers in system was a thing i appreciated with other handsets i am thinking of nova or themer right now.. Thanks for tour time
No gallery
Hello. You says to install "full modular" package of gapps but there is no gallery and camera included, så how do I get that or is it included in the rom.

Camera and gallery are built into Omni. They aren't part of the gapps package.

I would wait to install any Android 5 rom on anything. Its VERY Buggie on every Nexus device that has it.. So i would assume atleast wait until 5.1 or above is Release and see how it goes. My Nexus just freezes for no reason. other times it gets so slow its nearly not usable ..Yes its on a STOCK Factory image from google.
Been running this one for about 12 hours:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-2/development-n7105/rom-10-12-14-cm12-unofficial-data-t2969067/post57403616#post57403616
Using the 12/12 update.
no major trouble, only downside so far are no rear camera, and screen cast doesn't find my Roku, not sure if that's a bug or not.
Missing some of the customary CM personalization, but for an early rom, seems pretty stable.

Weird. I keep hearing that but my Nexus 5 is smooth and fast and totally trouble free. I sideloaded the OTA back in November when it was released and haven't had a lick of trouble at all. I'm also totally stock, not rooted, no custom recovery.

I Think its some kind of sleep or cpu throttle Bug.. I can be using it just say on google plus. All of the sudden the screen will freeze . Sometimes go back to lock screen. Only fix is to push power button on and off to toggle the screen a few times then its ok.. It Does seem to Run apps faster But seems the UI Is a bit slow.. I Thought i had a bad flash so i re- downloaded from GOOGLE And fastboot flashed totally stock same outcome.. It Could be my Device who knows. But i have seen others complain as well. Lately i do not use my nexus 7 much anyway. I have a note 10.1 2012 Version .
Other thing I do not like the new drop down notification thing. The two sided one was MUCH Better. I think the old list type settings menu was better as well. Someone needs to remind google we are not Children or icon yuppies.
Anyway i think my comments here are off topic as this is about the note 2. My note 2 is running stock rooted 4.3. I just see no need for custom rom on it at this time...
Thanks for your Opinion. as said maybe its JUST Me..

Thanks for the tip Was just coming to take a crack at that kernel, then I noticed the new rom by Team UB so I decided to give it a go. It's a decent, well rounded rom, and the rear camera works.
That brings my issues down to one, still can't throw screen to Roku, but I can't blame the developers for that.
