How to align softkeys/navigation buttons to left? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Is this possible? I love to hold mine landscape but I swear I'm jacking up my left thumb everytime I reach for back and home.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

If you install paranoid android or PAC ROM which supports hybrid properties, you can enable tablet UI which combines the navbar and status bar in one. Navigation buttons on the left, status on the right.
Google images of paranoid android tablet UI to see what I mean.

Check out full!screen and PieControl...works on stock, just need to be rooted.

Ill give those a look.
Not particularly in the mood to play rom switching just yet on it. Id like stockrom with that. I saw a tutorial on it, but too much hassle of mixing files and breaking stock launcher.
Already rooted, no issues with that.
I really fail to see how having the buttons spaced out, center aligned has become the accepted norm.
I'm indifferent on status bar on top, consolidating is fine, not important.
But jeez, my left thumb is killing me from stretching over.

I really like Pie. I have it set on the left edge, non centred (so it appears directly below my thumb). Even less movement of your left thumb than you were asking for!
I use the one in the ROM, not the standalone app. Anyone tried both? The app seems much more customisable, but does it lag much because it's an app?

I run both full!screen and pie at the same time, and no performance hit at all. (N7 2013 16gb 4.3 stock/rooted)

Also unless I'm smoking crack again, I dont see a paranoid android or PAC rom available for the 2013 model.

Many thanks. Ok, WTF am I smoking. I saw the Android Development thread and was all in there, tried an AOSP, etc.
I saw the original android dev thread but some reason associated it in my head as original Nexus 7.
Yea I believe I have Flo, that should be the 16gb wifi only.

No worries. Yeah flo is the wifi only one. I have the same model as you, and am running PAC. Word of warning, the last 'stable' RC is actually unstable. Go with a nightly.

I was reading that Paranoid Android was leaning to go away from the tabletui, so I would guess PAC would be similar.
Any big differences so far with PACs 4.3 vs Kitkat?
Since I just got it I put the rooted stock KitKat in first thing so I don't know what I'm already used to vs going "down" to 4.3

Do you have a link to this? The hybrid properties has quite a few settings, tablet UI mode, dpi settings etc. I'd like to know what they're talking about. I have the navbar hidden anyway.
I haven't tried 4.4 yet, so I can't give an opinion. But from what I've read, most of the UI changes are in the google experience launcher not kitkat.

Its as if they dont anticipate people holding the tablet in landscape with both hands and doing mostly thumbs.
Maybe it's because I'm a gamer from the NES/Nintendo days and treat it like a controller.
Are we really supposed to hold with one hand and stab away with our index?

Enable Pie. I just re-enabled the navbar for a little while to remember what it looked like. Even with the buttons aligned to the left, it felt so far away in comparison to Pie. If you're likening this to a game controller, it's like the buttons are right under your thumb.
I'm disappointed Google's removing tablet UI. It's not just the navbar, but a different layout to a number of apps such as Settings.

Hiding the Softkeys

This is a must feature that I NEED.
Does anyone know how I can make it easy to toggle it???
If that option is not available, is there a way I make it go away??? There are a few Roms I wanna try that doesn't support this feature.
Code name android is a stock like ROM that supports hiding the sofkeys

That's not exactly what I'm asking. I know it does do that though. I have tried CM9, APEX, AOKP(current), Paranoid Android, Codename Android, and JellyBean.
I just want to know how I can do this(like remove the Softkeys entirely or create a toggle) when I find a Rom that looks interesting that doesn't support the feature.
I dont own the Nexus but on my Galaxy Tab I have Galaxy Task 14 rom and it comes with an called "Hide Bar". It hides the Honeycomb soft keys. You should give this app a try and I think you have to be rooted.

you named more or less all custom ROMs you will need to ask the dev to implement it, i think. don't that there is an app solution or sth like that.
Am I mistaken, or is this a feature that is readily available in certain ROMs? You're talking about getting rid of the Back/Home/Recents, allowing full 720p glory, right? I'm trying to remember.. I want to say it would definitely be a feature on Paranoid Android, where you can hold the power button to enable/disable the soft keys (it was one of the icons at the top). Hopefully this helps.. Paranoid Android is the way to go if you absolutely need some certain kind of crazy/abnormal setup. (I really want to use it more than I do.. until this phone no longer is my primary contact number.)

There are many ICS Roms that I wanna try(not switching to JB yet. tried it and I'll let devs toy with it more) that doesn't support it to "maintain" the experience of stock.
And I have seen that honeycomb app. It only works for Honeycomb.
On the LMT thread there is a full screen toggle app that let's you hide the soft keys with one cluck. Its called fullscreen. apk.

OK I found it but it doesn't seem to work for AOKP(I Know, it already has a toggle, just testing before I switch over).
Does it only work when there is no toggle built in???
EDIT1: NVM I figured out that u must reboot for the toggle to have any effect.
It works though.

Yeah it needs a reboot to work. But its the only option that works on jelly bean for now. If you are still on aokp then why don't you like the built in feature?

I'm getting irritated of all features in AOKP.
I don't know why but the features are really irritating me.
I've decided to go stock and move with the fastest and most battery efficient Rom.
The Redemption Rom.
And lemme tell u it's fast.
And actually I do use the built in softkey mod feature. Just fed up with the lags and many features(dunno why, I was getting mad though every time I used my phone).

[Q] Tablet Mode

I rooted my Note 2 (amazingly easy via Note toolkit, thanks), then installed Rom Toolbox and set the DPI to 180. Guess what - NO TABLET MODE! Yes, some apps were with split screen interface, but I saw no navigation bar and no unified notification bar. I am sorely missing the nav bar to the point that I might go back to my beloved Galaxy Nexus.
I guess Samsung have thrown stock Android tablet mode completely out with their Note 2 ROMs.
I can see that Paranoid Android is a ways off, and despite myself I like the S Pen and its associated features, so I was hoping to switch to tablet mode and have the best of both worlds. No luck.
Anyone have any idea how to improve this situation?
It seems like its your first time using any non-nexus phone
There is no tablet mode in stock touchwiz/sense etc if you lower dpi...
They just decrease in size, and apps like keyboard which dont have a "tablet mode" in them FC.
However in Note I there WAS a way to introduce navigation bar for stock rom too...ill post it here so please tell me if it works
Ill be awaiting your feedback :good:

This is the mod...
You just made me remind it
How dare you , just look at my signature! But yes, after Android 4.0, I have been using Galaxy Nexus only - in between I bought a Galaxy Note, flashed stock ICS ROM on it, and enjoyed the tablet benefits. But its horrendous battery life on that ROM made me return to the GNex. I bought Note 2 on launch and am already regretting it because TW is so FUGLY compared to AOSP JB. Thanks for sharing the mod, I will try it and report back

So you are willing to go back to nexus to have the navigation bar that you miss on the Note 2 with 180 dpi? Sure ParanoidAndroid is a solution.. but that means losing S Pen functionality. Then again.. so does moving back to nexus. Might aswell stick to Note 2 legends.

bro can i know if the mod worked? so that i can add it to my jb mod collection
Stock ROMs does include some of the TW tablet roms components - for example, minimode-res.apk - is responsible for running tablet miniapps on Samm tablets. It has no reason to be on phone ROM but it is included. (Is also included in JB stock rom) Only reason why tablet mode do not work well, is some of the NOTE apks are HDPI+XHDPI, but as soon as you lower your DPI, android will start to recognize apps as LARGE/XLARGE MDPI/HDPI and there is no programmed layout for the apps to be running this mode.
See my signature, there is a hacked ICS SystemUi.apk from Tablet 7,7, which is running fine on Note1 with 213dpi and 160dpi(160dpi breaks call functionality) - mod taken from US Note1, thanks Dagr8, Wanam might be there also included, Qaazi76 for posting.... Thank to them, hopefully there will be also interest to run tablet mode on JB Note2 from devs.
After i just replaced that SystemUi on Note1, you have "microtablet" on 160dpi, with miniapps running from Note 10,1, some apps, Splanner, Email from Tablets are running....but there are some gugs. 213dpi works fine, also calls work just Contacts.apk is broken but still usable as a Phone for daily in TW tablet mode. Anyway, this is NOTE 2 related so...i believe that stock JB rom is capable to run Tablet, just needs some hacking.
So, as soon as some samsung tablet gets JB, hopefully some of the previous hackers (dagr8,etc...) will work on tablet UI for stock TW rom. Or, they may take the previous hacked systemUi as a sample, or somebody might just try to replace the systemUi from the thread just to try.
Hopefully they will work on it as i still keep N1 cause tablet mode. Sorry Samsung, but i see no sense to have big screen with big fonts, icons etc...Your stock UI for NOTEs is wrong!!!
Layout after setting to 213dpi - is very OK for the screen size (I mean Note1)
160dpi - is too small

wallpaper resize box

Can anyone tell me what the boxes to each side of this home screen resize tool means, since the home screen doesn't rotate what is their purpose? Thanks
Well, the non-rotating thing is more a touchwiz design choice by Samsung. In a nonTouchwiz, such as AOSP, there is rotating. And what you're seeing came in Android 4; it's possible maybe Android 3.1, but I never was on it so I don't know.
Personally, I don't like it. I preferred the old way.
As for the purpose, I haven't clue. When I was AOSP Android 4 based ROMS, the only time I saw the whole home screen was when I was in the mode to pick which page I wanted to jump to. Otherwise, it didn't matter if portrait or landscape mode, I only saw a small bit.

Anyone else hate CM11 on the G Pad?

Icons and keyboard are grossly huge and it looks like poo. Also, i hated the split notification bar. So basically all of the UI elements looked like they're blown up from a phone, but the status bar got the split tablet treatment? Guess I'll stick with stock and G2 xposed until someone can fix how bad these two issues look. Other than that, the rom was fast, but I'd rather not have my tab look like crap than to have speed...

Well, welcome to stock KitKat look? That's just how it looks lol. - Change the density, get a new launcher to fix your icon issue. There's nothing that can't be done, lulz.
CM runs great, theme it to your liking dude. Get Nova Launcher and make the icons smaller. Trebuchet isn't something you HAVE to use. You can do what ever you'd like. Tell you what, I'll go ahead and say the LG stock rom is the one that looks like shiez. By all means tho, stay on it. Doesn't matter to me. Just that I never heard your complaint before. I'm sure at some point I changed settings /notification drawer /then ticked show in drawer (and I think tick linked layout) and that gave me a single status bar. But it's not working as I remember on the rom I'm on atm. I may have achieved it when I was playing around with the settings on GravityBox (I don't use anymore).
So maybe with a bit of research you could get it working.

I've actually changed my tune on CM11. Not only does it fix the sh*t sound coming out of the speakers on the stock ROM, but the device is now overall snappy and more enjoyable to use. Even though I like the light theme that lg uses, I can't say that CM looks too bad. Oh, and download an app called 'build prop editor' change the 'LCD Density' to 273-300. This makes everything the size it should be. For some reason it's set to 340 right out of the gate and it makes it appear far too large. The only thing that I actually miss about the stock ROM is the notification drawer. I really really really hate the split one for a device that's not all that big. Hell, even my Note 10.1-14 has a single drop down that looks better than this...

Came to the forum to ask exactly about the sound - whether flashing a custom rom like CM would improve it, because honestly, I am greatly dissapointed with how it sounds. I have reasons to believe that it's not only a matter of the speakers but some weird DSP **** LG has put there - some kind of lousy compression... Would you care to elaborate on the sound, in what ways did it improve? Sorry for highjacking this post (oh, by the way, I used to have a - now broken - Nexus 7, the notification drawer works like that even on smaller screens and resolutions like the old Nexus 7 has, but personally I like it!)

Does your tablet have a weird boxy sound to it where speaking voices sound like they're in a tunnel? Cm 11 fixes it. The sound isn't as Loud now at the low and mid range, but still is loud with volume all the way up. But at least it's clear and sounds great.

That's what I was hoping. I'm getting a good deal on it, and I love the idea of a custom ROM, but I actually use some of the Kindle-specific features, such as having the device read to me, etc. which I use quite a lot, and I'm afraid I'd miss them too much.
Is the later version of the Fire OS just as laggy as the earlier releases? That's the only real criticism I've seen that would bug me.
Do I need root to use the Playstore, or can I just sideload an apk of the Playstore app?
You have to root for the play store because part of it is a system app. The later versions of fire os got worse in my opinion, they disabled wallpaper from working and my fix is one of the only ways to get it working on the newer versions and its a little buggy itself. I believe cm has some kinda reading ability but idk the extent of it because I have never used it. I can vouch for the cm ROM as I came from cm 10.1 to cm 11 recently and man was there a difference in speed, much much faster. I can't really tell if amazon os was fast or not as I haven't used it in a while, probably about a year.

So, in your view, how is CM 11 now on the 8.9? I'm debating whether to flash it or not at this point.
I can only vouch for what I have used on the 7" model, but considering they are both updated quite a bit they should both be about the same, I have to say it is awesome, my only regret is Google took out the tablet navbar from the code and cm hasn't added it back in as a feature(it's not hashcodes fault in the least). If you haven't ever seen a tablet navbar then just forget I said that as the configuration night he standard navbar is about the same as Amazon's minus the fact its got android looking buttons. I just personally don't like having to use 2 thumbs to hit my soft keys.

Do you mean that the Kindle CM 11 doesn't have a full-screen immerse mode? Is the navbar not configurable?
It has full screen immersion, I love that feature BTW. And the nav bar is configurable was just talking about this(this is from my cm 10.1 days):
Could only find a portrait screenshot, could a sworn I had landscape pics too...

So, there's no way to blend the on-screen buttons into the UI (not sure how to describe it) as I've seen on other devices?
If you are talking about what is seen in my pic the answer is not yet, Google removed the code necessary for that style navbar + status bar and cm hasn't added it back in, I think some people in the kf1 forum were attempting to. It is just a kitkat thing in general, not sure of PAC ROMs have it or not but I still recommend cm 11 despite this. Personally I mainly just liked this layout because it didn't require the use of both thumbs to reach for the buttons.

stunts513, did CM10.x have tablet mode? I seem to remember having to go to SGT7 to get that tablet nav bar.

sorta, it had the nessassary frameworks and such to enable it, but it required some patching on the cm 10.1 and 10.2 builds, i never made a patch for the 8.9" hd, but i think some of the other roms could do it but i don't remeber, think like pac rom and such could but i don't recommend using the older cm 10.2 and 10.1 based builds, the changes that were made sped them up and made them much much much less buggy so i really recommend using a cm 11 based build, i've gotten used to the normal ui, still am hoping for a patch though myself.

I'm with you on that. I'm on PA 4.4 beta1 as of today and probably the one feature I'm waiting/hoping Google will give us back is the tablet nav+notification bar.
