ART extremely laggy - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After switching to ART on my stock M8 it got extremely laggy at times and froze up to a minute at a time. The phone would also get hot. After switching back to Dalvik everything was fast again. Anyone notice this?

You have to remember ART is still developmental. Also you need to say whether you are on Sense or GPE as there are issues with sense.
Also there are a number of apps that still aren't working with ART.
There are some roms that include it

I think your issue is that the phone was throttling due to the heat. Because it probably ran at maximum CPU speeds to optimise the apps for ART, this would have cause the phone to get hot and to feel the need to throttle. Give it some time to cool down and to settle then see if it still feels laggy

That problem should only last a few minutes or so. This has been happening for 2 weeks until I changed back this morning.

Have a look on here, are any of the apps that are supposedly broken running in the background?
I am not sure when this list was last updated as some of them worked when I used art last time although some of them were definitely broken.

as mentioned here

Didn't see any of my apps that weren't working. I've hard restarted and used only a few essential apps (Yahoo Mail, Hangouts, Snapchat) which are all working on ART and the problem still occurred.

It seems like my evo is full of problems.
1.(attachment 2) Is a 4 hour battery normal?
2.(attachment 1) Why would my evo always be at 100% CPU usage. I don't think I was even using the phone at the time.(If this has anything to do with it, when I installed widget locker I checked the box to bypass the 5 second android limitation, I forget What it was)
3.(attachment 4) Shouldn't the up time and awake time be diffident? Is this whats killing my battery?

Let it sit idle with the screen off for a couple minutes and check it again. I also see you have skype running in the background. I hear that's a battery hog as well.

I was also going nuts with the same issue... I hope they sort out the wakelock issue with Tango, because it would be great otherwise.

Hit thanks on accident. Have a freebie.
It has been reported that our Gallery app is buggy with the sensor usage. My suggestion to see if this is the root of the problem is to uninstall/freeze the Gallery app and try a different one. Some people have mentioned that just installing the 3D Gallery from the market doesn't have the issue like the stock one. Either way let us know if that helps.

I have the same problem, even after uninstalling the 3d gallery it still occurs. It usally keeps my phone awake 50% of the time. I have tried so many things to fix it, nothing helps.

Gallery sensor usage and System sensor usage are two different issues. I have noticed that "System" sensor usage is always around 50%, but it does not effect partial wake usage and does not cause excessive battery drain (at least on my Epic it doesn't).
I tried wiping and using odin to go back to stock but I will try again. This time im going to keep from putting anything back on my sd card. What I noticed was even when I did this the problem occurred on 2.1 stock as well.
While my sensor usage is up. My partial wake lock is usually 50% as well.

These are most likely useless metrics.
It is affecting battery though. I usally last 8 or 9 hours which is far less than I used to. My phone also will get very warm even if I'm not using it.

google is of no help in locating the app or service
Well I went back to stock then flashed back up ACS 1.1.0. I flashed genocide kernel as well. the battery isn't as bad and i resorted to using autokiller set to aggressive. Most of the time its fine but it still will go back to a 50% wakelock. when this happens usually under sensor usage android system is 50% or 100%. when its 100% my phone will get warm. The only time i noticed this really happening was sometime after i got a replacement phone. Do you think its hardware related. It doesn't make sense to me. This morning my first 10% of battery lasted about 3 hours then the wake lock kicked in and it started to drop very fast. I used to make 14 hours of heavy use with this phone.
Thank you for those that have been trying to help.

Phone getting slower and slower?

I just got my phone recently and immediately flashed maguro milestone 5 and franco's kernel on top. I've been using it for almost a week now and at the beginning everything was fast but it has become noticeably slower on some areas like opening apps, typing on the keyboard and camera as of today. I'm guessing it's not rom or kernel related because it was really fast coming from a full wipe. I figured I must be doing something wrong or is there anything else that I should be doing? Hacks or mods?
I've already set my governor to ondemand and increased the max frequency.
I also noticed leaving your wifi open chews up your battery a lot especially when you open it and leave your phone at idle, are there settings that I should be tinkering with for this to stop? I've never experienced this with any of my previous android phones.
Thank you!
I'd see if the same thing happens on stock rom, cause I don't think it does.
Did you do a full wipe before flashing aokp m5 ?
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
When coming from stock to aokp/cm9 it is usualy recommended to do a factory reset after installation and boot. First copy/save important files/music/backups etc to your pc.
Yep full wipe and everything I also noticed my notification screen gets laggy 1/10 times I swipe it down. It becomes all stuttery for a few seconds before it finally reaches down.
Like I said, everything was working fine after my fresh install. It only started to happen 4-6 days after.

Anyone else experiencing the notification bar lag? I tried swiping it up and down 20x and it really does get jerky once in a while. Could be because of the toggle widgets settings?

Tried setting clear cache and governor to interactive and so far so good! Tried playing around with the notification bar and opening and closing apps and it seems much much better now. Thank you! Weird how it could have been cache related.
Do any of you tinker with the settings for wifi? I set it on always on and get horrible battery life when I leave it open. This never happened on my old s2.

Android OS and Media using KILLING the battery life

Ok so I bought this phone on Monday. The very first day it gave me a mammoth battery life. I mean a ridiculous OST of 5h 45m 9s and still 7% juice left (screenshots attached in 2nd post).
And then the very next day issues started. First the Android OS... I charged my phone 100% and slept. Woke up and saw it at around 61%.. Shocked and unhappy. Googled a bit and by Noon I stopped a lot of Samsung **** going on at the back. Android OS became normal but MEDIA started to show its baddd side..
And just try to see in the screenshots, it shows the WIFI was on all time/all the time. However I never turned it on. It was off all night.
Screenshots are attached below. Would love some help/guidance here.
And one more thing. All of a sudden the Lock Screen's funky wallpaper has changed into a blue screen wallpaper that has some weird shortcuts ! Why is it happening. Restating the device brings back the same funky paint color wallpaper but then within minutes its back to the same sh*t.
First day usage SCs
do you have any screenshot(s) of the blue screen wallpaper with the weird shortcuts? I'm not experiencing any issues like this.
Don't you think you've touched it unconsciously while you're asleep with parts of your body that toggled the wifi and other stuff?
Try a factory reset

Oh factory reset sucks lol. By the way, I was reading from somewhere (android central forum i think) that to kill Android OS frome ating up all battery, install some CLEAR RAM app to clear your RAM.. which I did. And yesternight I figured out that this clear ram app changed my lockscreen itself..without asking me. So i deleted. Also, I deleted everything on SD Card and removed it. Now I dont know whats keeping the Android OS and MEDIA up all the time. The apps I have installed so far are:
skype, whatsapp, viber, sacebook and temple run. They were installed from day 1 so if they are creating problems, why didnt they create any impact on Day 1? And these are pretty normal apps which I dont think should create any problem.
Plus, wifi always on issue is resolved to by unchecking some option in wifi menu.

first l sympatise with you. There is no problem on Unrooted phone that factory reset cannot Solve except it is factory fault issue, but this is not factory Cos it was ok on day 1.
Your instant messager like Skype and BBM are mainly the applications that hog battery.
Ensure you did not restrict background processes in Developers option.
Ensure your wifi 'and GPS are off when you don't need them.
Don't install any process killer.
Stop auto update
put your phone in battery saving mode.
check to see If there is downloading process going on at background
Also see if there is live streaming (MEDIA SERVER) going on sites you visited like Youtube.
check the running processes in application manager in setting and check if any is constantly RESTARTING. Look for a way to stop such .
Above all try to wait for the research l did on BATTERY POWER AND DATA MANAGEMENT which I will post soon.
Good Luck

ART or DALVIK

Just wanna get other people's views on Art or dalvik depending on what they are using. I recently switched to ART to give it a try and possibly compare.
What's everyone else using
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Free mobile app
I switched to ART last night and S-Health kept crashing after boot up. Went back to DALVIK and the issue went away
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Free mobile app
i didnt notice much different in performance with ART compared to DALVIK. the bootup time is very slow but outside of that, performance was nothing noticeable. Maybe it'll be different with lollipop
I noticed that there is more ram space running art than dalvik not that it matters with the power this phone has...and my s health app crashes also....I guess I just found out why. I also noticed that every time I reboot it loads the upgrading apps screen and takes a little bit to upgrade and at that time my phone gets really hot. I think I'm gonna switch back to dalvik.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Free mobile app
I switched to ART and S-Health as well as Pandora both kept force closing. Switched back to DALVIK and everything is good now.
I use dalvik, as I have a few apps that don't work on ART. One of the reasons I hope v5.0 holds of a month or two - to give apps a chance to catch up.
Once 5.0 comes out, it will be forced on us, thus breaking some apps I need. So I'm in no hurry.
I used art for about a week and it runs a little snappier to me. No lag hitting recent apps was the most noticeable difference. I don't reset often but I switched back to dalvic when I realized private mode no longer worked.
If long boot times is ok with you for slightly better response times then ART.
First reboot will take a long time second reboots still take a while about 50-60 apps need to optimize vs 300+ first time.
Long boot times 50-60 apps that always require optimization are most likely Samsung bloatware and touchwiz elements.
Otherwise stick with dalvik. (not very noticeable except maybe some breaking of apps and touchwiz interface)

Uninstall the S-Health update. Runs great after that. I even updated it recently after and all is working well
I realize that most people who come here are tech savvy, but I feel that I must at least slightly defend ART from the internet rumors, and misinformation that can kill the most beautiful things...
The upgrading apps on every boot up will not happen when ART is the default runtime in 5.0
I tried using ART, and I liked it, but I could not handle the reboot time. Once it is the law of the land, the reboot issues will be gone and I will be pleased to welcome ART to my phone.
I enjoyed ART. I know it's still buggy but I liked it except for my phone getting extremely hot while upgrading the apps but I'm sure that will.go away with 5.0 too.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Free mobile app
This was the first phone where I felt ART did not improve the performance of the phone. And with the long reboot times I had to switch back. Of the 5 phones I have run ART on this is the only one that complied the apps on every boot.
There are some that say their regents lag went away but I feel it made zero difference. It was faster upon first boot but quickly degraded back to the 1-2 second lag.
I look forward to our update to see if that last goes away and to see if the new TW is a little smoother.
