Sprint plans to start throttling top 5% - Sprint LG G2

Just found this article a few hours ago and thought i would share this with u guys. Makes me absolutely furious since i just switched to sprint. I could of went with another carrier that doesnt have a crap network if i knew they were going to renege on the one thing that sets them apart from everyone else. Dont know about u guys but i will def b terminating my contract and, hell, just go back to net10. What do u guys think?? They will start throttling the top 5% heaviest users on 6/1/2014. Which to me means anyone who uses over 5-7gig a month, which i can use in a day. Lol. Well anyway here it is....

read carefully they are only doing it on congested towers and after the congestion goes down or you connect to a different tower that isn't congested you are no longer throttled
this is a quote from the fierce wireless site
"The approach "will enable us to provide more customers with a high quality data experience during heavy usage times," Sprint said in a statement sent to FierceWirelessTech. "Once the customer is no longer connected to a congested cell site, or the site is no longer congested, speeds will return to normal."

Problem is....ALL the Sprint towers are congested. Lol

If not not getting throttled yet then i hate. See when they do. Horrible service sprint should be ashamed I'll go back to tmobile now that they have unlimited if sprint don't get better my lte was fine. Until last month can't watch any youtube videos wtf. I wanna blame this lg g2 as the problem but now i believe sprint might be under the poor speeds

Saying a "tower is congested" is nonsense and if you believe that I have a bridge in brooklyn I can sell you for a dollar.
Who is determining this congestion? Sprint is. You are going to sit there and believe that they wont throttle everyone over a certain data usage amount? Why would they unthrottle you on a different tower? Cause they know the vast majority of people use the most data from home and/or work. Thats usually a few main towers your phone.connects to throught a day. All they have to say is "hmmm this user is over 5gb at home... throttled" and then can claim that that tower is congested 24/7 if they want to.
Who is sprint accountable to for proof? The customer? Like we have the data and can tell.
These carriers can do whatever they want and snow people about how data costs so much and its a mountain of lies. I just priced bandwidth again today from level 3 and cogent at .56 a GB. Stop believing the nonsense people. You are being apathetically spoonfed garbage about how expensive data it. The problem is the average consumer is wholly uneducated about data costs and the mobile carriers have all towed the line with press about how expensive it is to make you believe it.... its lies. All of it.

You are correct on that, the more I think about it the more I want to leave for someone like T-Mobile. I know about the possible merger but DT just said that if it falls flat they want 1 billion as a fee. That's money neither sprint nor softbank can afford right now

You guys maybe think the reason Sprint's network is slow is because of these data abusers on your towers during peak times? I use a bit of data myself but I think that this new policy will actually increase the network performance for most of us.
I'm all for this because I've experienced 0.6 Mbps on an LTE site because of data abusers and it made my experience with Sprint poor.

Some of us use all our data during off hours (overnight here) but I bet you we will still be throttled. I use a average of 30gb a month, I'm at 20gb now and still have 11 days left on my billing cycle, and all of that is from Netflix and Pandora

This is kind of what I am talking about. For a tower to actually be congested you have to have a fairly high populated area. If you are in a major city, sure a tower MIGHT be congested (and thats a big maybe). But most often in those situations the network is deployed with multiple towers. Think NYC or Chicago for example. Three towers might serve 1 square mile. However the vast majority of us dont live in areas like that. I have 3 towers within 3-4 miles of my home. It only serves a population of maybe 6,000 people. Now how many of those are sprint users? 10% Thats hardly congestion. Even at 50% the network would be fine. I bet I and my gf both get throttled 24/7 at home, and away from home and I am hardly in the top 5%.
There is no way in heck that this is going to be limited to the top 5% of users on congested towers.
We all need to stop repeating the spoon fed garbage these carriers feed us and get a bit more edcuated on how data really works. Its not what you believe it be. Tower congestion is a subjective issue. Sprint can simply just say it is. Where is the verification?
Aye there's the rub!

Verizon 4G

All I have to say is Ouch! The entire 4G network is down (and some of their 3G too it seems), has been since last night, and no ETA for repair...
VZ users are probably still getting faster speeds than us though
Guess that depends on how fast their 1x is (It was slow as balls on my Eris...)
This is the 5th outage of its kind for them. The last one was just last week. Verizon's got the faster/superior network but obviously something's not right there. I hope they fix this once and for all, for the sake of those 70 million customers they rape with their nickel-and-diming
Well now verizon has sprint like 3 g speeds

Verizon easily has the most reliable network, I was with them for almost two years. Their 3G speeds easily beat our 4G speeds in actual use speed and I experienced one outage the whole time I was with them. I only left because they started throttling the "unlimited" data they sold me after just 2gb. Managed to get out of the ETF only after a bunch of complaints, including one with the attorney general's office.

Five nationwide outages in one calendar year is not reliable and as far as your comment of their 3g beating wimax speeds.... um no.
Not even in crappy wimax areas.

Speaking from experience in my area. It is a simple fact that Verizon 3G beat my wimax speeds in Jax, FL.
I just tell it like it is, unlike some people, I don't have "allegiances" to corporations unless they are paying me. I will never get fanboyism. Have you ever even used Verizon lol?

I'll take decent Sprint speeds with cheaper service anyday. Once Sprint gets their **** together, their speeds will be just as good if not better than Verizons on 3g. 4g is nice, but unless you are tethering it, it really doesn't make a difference when you are browsing the web on your phone.

Yes I have and it's not even close to as good as the commercials try to suggest it is.
Also, in the last speed tests released a few months ago the average 3g for Verizon was around 700k while the average Sprint wimax was either 6 or 8 mbps (can't remember which)
Not even close.

Unless you were actually subject to these outages, then it would be a different tune.
Obviously the speeds are just fine for you (or you're exaggerating) since you're still with Sprint even though you've been complaining about them even on the evo forums for a full year now.

Speeds vary greatly depending on location, congestion, and capacity. In real world use, my 3G was noticeably faster on Verizon than my wimax is on Sprint. In addition, finding a spot where Verizon didn't have coverage was rare. It is unfortunate that they started throttling.

Lmao, decent sprint speed? I love my phone but sprints network makes me miss T-Mobile on a daily basis... My 3G was just as fast as sprints 4G and that not even close to an exaggeration... Sprint network as a whole is abysmal and the only reason they beat out AT&T in customer satisfaction is because big blues customer service is worse then sprints network. If sprint was GSM I would take my ass back to magenta who I only left because I was afraid of the merger... That being said my phone makes me happy enough not to pay the etf and I only have good things to say about sprints customer service (from my experiences with them)
Rant over lol

I was with Verizon for 2 years before the EVO 4G. Not a hitch, always had 4 or 5 bars, now i get 2 max with Sprint (same location). Speeds with Verizon were better too hands down. Sprint had their bad days where the internet would have made no difference if it were completely dead or producing less than 15kb/s. Unfortunately, i was stuck on those 15kb/s days in jersey. However, when i first switched to Sprint with the EVO 4g, data and signal were FLAWLESS. i honestly don't know what happened to Sprint now...

[Q] Just got off the phone with CLEAR...

I'm looking into getting CLEAR's home internet service but I had a question for them first. I told them, "I am currently a Sprint customer with a 4G phone (my E4GT) and I am aware that Clear and Sprint use the same 4G network. I live in a very strong 4G area according to your coverage map and Sprint's coverage map, yet 4G signal doesn't penetrate my apartment. I have to step outside to get 4G signal. I am considering getting CLEAR home internet service but since my phones don't get 4G inside my apartment, would the same be true for CLEAR's home internet modem?"
They told me that even though they use the same towers and same technology, and that they built Sprint's 4G network for them, they are not the same signal. They told me CLEAR operates their service on a slightly different frequency and they don't share that network or bandwidth with Sprint 4G customers so I wouldn't be sharing the network with Sprint.
Is this all true or are they just trying to get me to sign up?

Good to know. I'm not completely uninformed. I know that Clear operates on more frequencies than just the ones our phones are able to pick up on but from that to saying they don't share bandwidth or network at all with Sprint 4G customers is a bit of a stretch for me. I'm not so sure that's true...

I'm pretty sure there was a thread here on XDA that showed you how to change your WiMax MAC address so if you weren't on Sprint, you could use the MAC of your CLEAR modem in order to get 4G on your phone... So I'd think that the frequency is the same.

One thing has very little to do with the other actually, because the same is true of Comcast 4G WiMax modems that use CLEAR's network. Changing the MAC address is simply a way of getting the network to recognize your device as active but it has nothing to do with frequencies. I've heard CLEAR operates anywhere between 2.3 - 2.7 GHz while our phones' center frequencies put us between 2.5 and 2.6.
There has been lots of talk here on XDA about changing center frequencies (especially on the EVO) to take advantage of a bigger range of frequencies, which leads me to believe these other frequencies are indeed in use. I don't know if anyone's been able to do it, though. But even if they are in use, I'm just not sure how true their claim is that those frequencies provide better signal, are faster, and don't share bandwidth with Sprint 4G. That last claim seems a little out there for me.

You'll be lucky if they let you return the equipment within that window. One of my idiot roommates in college signed us up for their shady ass service in our apartment... We got one "bar" and 56k speeds. They would not let us cancel (even within the window) because we technically "had service". It took months to get that straightened out without having to pay cancellation fees... I can't remember how many conversations we had or how many techs they sent out... But hey, maybe they are different now? This was over four years ago... We ended up with Comcast.

Thanks for the heads up. They assured me since there is no contract, I could cancel at any time within that window and get all my money back but I've made my decision and I am not going to get service with the. I gave their "Acceptable Use" policy a read and it sounds like a lot of double talk. "Unlimited but only under our terms and if we think you are using too much data we will throttle you without warning and we won't tell you what we deem is 'too much data'... blah blah blah."
I bet they copied-and-pasted that stuff from AT&T's stance on their customers who were grandfathered in with their unlimited plans.

I tried out CLEAR ~1.5 years ago, and they assured me I'd get good data speeds, but I would get even better speeds in about 1-2 months as they were going to build a tower even closer to where I live (the rep even gave me the cross streets).
Well, I got crap data speeds, and returned it within 2 weeks. And to this day, their data map still shows no new towers where I live.

Their lowest plan is $35/month for 1.5 Mbits/sec ... Even if this service would be $15/month, I would still have a hard time justifying the amount of money for the service. 3G runs at this speed (for me at home, not everywhere else) and it comes part of the service without additional cost, so why spend the money in the first place ???

Making the switch to Sprint

So I've decdied to make the switch to sprint and boycott these scammers! VZW just throttled my connection because I reached 1gb in data, half of my shared data. something a Verizon rep swore they never practice unlike Sprint. I asked a Sprint rep and she mentioned they don't charge for overages like Big Red, they notify you and lower your speeds.
Can anyone else confirm that Sprint throttles coconnections and not just for overages? I'd like a little more info before I switch over. Thanks in advance.

Sprint does not throttle. At one point I used about 20+ GB a month for 3 months and never got throttled. Same on verizon before I gave my line to my gf. I would use about 80+ GB a month for 9 months and I was never told anything

Yea if they even attempt to throttle it that means you're watching waaaaaay too much porn or you're watching way too much HD porn lol :crying:
They can't throttle 0.5kbps lol
It was BitTorrent beta that got me downloading stock touchwiz, still less than half the 2gb/mo.
Yeah, Verizon has some really scumbaggy business practices as I've seen before. They will do anything legal to be able to get the most of your money.
Sprint doesn't do most of the crap that VZW does. There have been 0 documented cases of someone being throttled, even when this one guy reached 1TB of data on 4G, all they did was send him a letter asking him to stop. I usually go around 20-50GB on 3G per month and I haven't been throttled or anything.
One thing to watch out for is that speeds can be slow - Depending on where you live, you could be getting either 200kbps or 2000kbps.. A lot of markets are undergoing backhaul increase and other network vision enhancements. During this period, a lot of places can get to really low speeds. After it, however, there will probably be a consistent 1000-2000kbps everywhere on 3G.
Not to mention that they also plan to cover most of their existing 3G places with LTE by the end of 2014 so you won't have to care about speed after 2014 - It'll always be consistent LTE speeds.
Where are you located at? If you are in a good Sprint area or even better... a new LTE area... you should have switched yesterday. But I'd read into more so you not disappointed. Sprint is far better on a lot of things. But 3G speeds can be slow at times. I am a big fan of theirs.
My overall experience.
1. Sprint
2. T-Mobile
3. Verizon
4. ... any others...
5. AT&T
Lol

I just switch two weeks ago from Verizon to Sprint because of the crap Verizon is doing.
I will say this Verizon's network and data speeds smoke Sprint's but I'm not willing to deal with Verizon's BS anymore.
I have found some places I go it takes longer for a web page to load on Sprint but nothing I can't deal with.
I even paid Verizon almost $1100.00 in ETF's for my 5 lines just to get away from them.
All in all I'm good with Sprint and so far happy I made the switch.

Sprint would need faster data speeds to be able to actually throttle them. As it is now, its just a slight step above a 56k modem.
I'm in pretty much the same boat as bp328i. I moved from VZ to Sprint just about a month ago because of all the "Share Everything" garbage at VZ. I am fortunate in that I live near Chicago and although they have not officially rolled out 4G they are already in the testing phase so I get 4GLTE about 90% of the time. When it is up, it is great, but there are some significant "holes" in their coverage. I guess, at least while I'm here in my local area, I am pleased with Sprint and its unlimited data, etc. So I'm not sorry that I made the move.
That's the one thing Sprint has going for them, no BS. When they say unlimited, they mean it. As stated, totally depends on your area if you can actually use it or not. I'm around Chicago, so 3G speeds are pretty horrid, but obviously get better the further out from the city you get.
The only remaining question is if Sprint will retain unlimited data once they have good LTE coverage. IMO, that's the only thing that will keep people with them. It's the single selling point they have over everyone else. If they get rid of it, they don't have the network VZW has, so people will jump ship I'm sure.

It's the single selling point they have over everyone else. If they get rid of it, they don't have the network VZW has, so people will jump ship I'm sure.

I would most likely "jump ship" back to VZ. You can't argue with their coverage. Loved their anti-iPhone campaign: "There's a 'map' for that."

I'm with you on this, if Sprint gets rid of unlimited I'll be right back to Verizon. If my only choice is a limited data plan I'll might as well have the best coverage.

I think Sprint will retain its unlimited smartphone plans. But they may well crack down harder on unauthorized tethering, which is a violation of the current terms. (I hope they do.) I'll bet that since Verizon and AT&T have moved to close down their unlimited plans, the tethering pirates have migrated even more to Sprint to take advantage of the last remaining opportunity. Enforcing the contract better against abuse can keep unlimited smartphone contracts viable, and I understand the new network will provide better tools for detecting it.
Thx guys, going with Sprint. I'm already 3/4 up on my data for this month (Easytether PRO) and unlimited with Sprint is just about as much as 2GB w/VZW.

The BitTorrent is what got you throttled on Verizon.
All the major carriers have a clause in their contracts that look for certain data apps, torrents are one of them. IF they see you using one you can get a nasty letter, or throttled..

I hope Sprint looks for the same thing then. I don't have a problem with people who tether now and again when in a bind, but I'm not a fan of those who tether just because they can and abuse the crap out of it. If that keeps happening, Sprint will ditch their unlimited data too, or worse, lock/encrypt bootloaders so it's tougher to root your phone and get free tethering.

I can vouch for this. On sprint I went three months in a row with 30gb+ usage(tethering wimax and torrenting). After the third month I got a call and they said if I didn't stop torrenting (against tos) they would have to cancel my service. However they never mentioned tethering, so I said I wasn't aware that torrenting was not allowed and stopped and no issues since. Sprint is best as long as it stays unlimited.

Agreed, with Verizon, I was usually within 1-5GB depending on WiFi, I rarely exceeded 5GB, and the first time I used BitTorrent was for stock touchwiz. Those of us who use hotspot/tethering daily, Sprint seems most logical.
Technically, Verizon has no right to block 3rd party tethering apps and actually just paid out $1.25 million for trying to
Verizon Wireless To Pay $1.25 Million To Settle Investigation

Guys, just got off the phone with Verizon to transfer my number to Sprint, they asked why, I told them I was dissatisfied with their share packages and viola, they added my old unlimited plan back, strait 4G LTE, no sharing. Just thought I'd share my mediocre victory with Verizon. If you have VZW and hate their share packages, you can try telling Verizon your swiching to Sprint and see if they let you into their unlimited grandfathered data plans

[Q] anybody else get " the letter"

i just got my letter (about my unlocked phone/ wifi tethering ). the same day i got my new S3,
the phone is nice but cleveland has no LTE...and won't until mid 2013
i've been with sprint 10 years so if they terminate F U C K ' E M
i'll get the Galaxy note 2 (cheap ) / wit a new contract.:highfive:
How much data did you use while tethering?

I had that letter numerous time with my Epic. I used roam control and strictly roamed for 3 months straight. Nothing ever came off it though. No Sprint data, 10gb a month of roaming data.

It would be nice if their network was at least useable enough that you don't have to force roaming just to check your email or load a damn Facebook page.

that's a lot. maybe if people had consideration and didn't abuse tethering it would be included in the plans.. obliviously downloading 10gb of data while roaming seems blatantly excessive. surprised they didn't pull the plug, perhaps it takes a bit for the system to raise a flag. the fees must be costing them more than you're worth having as a customer, as harsh as that may sound..
I'd rather use roam control and get 3g Verizon speed, instead of 1 bar of Sprint 3g. So if they upped their network then I wouldn't have to. I'm not complaining though, just giving op my situation.
I wasn't tethering though. Just lots of high quality Spotify. I don't think they'd even know the difference.

I got the phone call from sprint about 5 months ago, after only one month of high roaming data (was using samsung epic 4g touch at the time). I wasn't force roaming. I was just doing my usual work, home, kids stuff routine. That's how bad the sprint signals are in pockets of where I live. So for one month I used 6g of data roaming, which is my monthly average. Pandora, email and facebook.
In fact, my house, which is about 6 blocks from LTE coverage is a dead zone with roaming only (even with an air rave).
I reverted the modem back a couple versions the next month and problem was solved, of course with much slower data.
What I don't really understand is how sprint can know that the 2 mile stretch of area I live and work in is a deadzone and still give me crap for it. Basically, the rep said turn roaming off and have no service, or terminate. I like sprint, I've got 6 lines. It's the only carrier i can afford. I never call to complain, specifically because of that. I am happy with what I get.

i live in Michigan and have no 4G service. I pay $10/mo for "premium data" services. IDK about you but 3G speeds so slow that you dont even wanna use data is hardly "premium". i only use about 1.5GB/month. I am sure as soon as 4G LTE becomes available for me (end of year or early next year) i will get the same letter/call from them.

the thing that gets me is why don't they at least give out some numbers on how much you're allowed to roam data.. or are people not allowed data roaming at all?
i also assume if you tether, unless you do some type of work around on the device they can tell whether it's tethering or normal phone data.
Call to action!
TO ALL!!!! this is a call to action. I too, like many others are experiencing unacceptable data speeds while on 3G and in great reception while using the Galaxy S III. the speeds I should be receiving are 1.5-3 MB/s but instead I am receiving around 128Kb/s in the city and within excellent service. We all have to pay a 'Premium Data Add-On' charges just to own these phones and this is unacceptable. Please write an Email to [email protected], vice president of customer experience at sprint and let him know what you are experiencing. Maybe if enough pissed off customers write, they will finally listen!

That's a good idea. Cause I was thinking of doing the data roaming thing here and there when I need too. Some parts of Long Island is like a dead zone for Sprint. Esp, where I use to work. Now I work in New York City, signal is great there, but still tends to be funky and speeds are different (enough to notice) with all full bars. My friend who has Verizon, goes through his pandora, without skips, or downloads much quicker. I am just trying to wait it out for this 4G move to take place so my $10.00 extra a month addition won't feel that bad.....but its taking them forever!
It does suck. I've been paying the "premium" data few now for almost 3 years. I've never had had 4g and my 3g is pretty terrible.

Use the hell out your phone tethering included, we pay way more than it cost to use data. Roaning cost them money that's why the carrier get mad, but on there network they could careless. Most people ain't power users only most people on xda, well in the real world we make up a small group I highly doubt we would interrupt service. Sprint 3g is just slow it don't matter if 1500 people are connected or just 2 it sucks. I Been tethering over 20 gigs a month along time atleast five years. That's not a lot when you consider downloading games from gameloft downloading roms on xda tethering to use your xbox 360 online watching netfrix and so on. It needs to be unlimited all times free tethering an all I rather pay more for that.

I am trying to roam using roam control but my GS3 won't get a signal in Chicago. I others on here roaming fine. I'm using version 2.6.2 which is the latest version. I have the app set to Samsung GS3. What can I do to get this working?

Tmobile sucks

T-Mobile is really spotty in some states thought they had better coverage
Could be a tower issue...plus your complaining about cancelling your service over the fact you get edge...just so you know T-Mobile is in the works right now restructuring there network/towers...plus integrating LTE too...dont give up!

Yup sure am I pay a 100 dollar phone bill and I'm on technology that's outdated not cool. I should never have a bad signal in a major city total bs. Even the T-Mobile rep said I shouldn't be on edge and he said all the towers are up and running none bring updated
Stupid question but did you try powering down, pull the battery, wait about 5 minutes and reboot?
Also, are you on the latest radio?
I'm almost willing to bet it's on your end and not T-Mobile...

Well the technology you're 'on' isn't outdated and if the tmobile rep says that shouldn't be the case probably means that there's some other issue. And do you usually have bad service? I probably wouldn't change service since it's poor in an area your visiting temporarily... If it's not bad service where you usually live... And were you asking for advice or did you just want to vent to everyone?

That is quite ironic, because when I was visiting family in Philly/DE/NJ I was getting excellent 4G around 10GB download speeds and great voice coverage.

I got only EDGE while visiting my dad. My reaction was to be stoked because I expected only GPRS or nothing at all. It's not like I'm there very often - it doesn't really matter. Even if he lived a few miles over in the "major city" nearby, it's not like I'm there for a significant portion of my life. That'd be like cancelling my service if it was crap when I was visiting my grandparents in Massachusetts - I'm there.. what, a week a year ? Whoopee. Unless you're in college and visiting this family for months at a time... what's the big deal ?
And paying $100/mo on T-Mobile ? Why ? How ? I went with T-Mobile because I DIDN'T want that kind of ridiculous bill - and because they specifically offer plans that aren't that high.
They have an unlimited everything pre-paid for $70/mo - still lower than others. I'm on the $30/mo pre-paid plan.
Yeah, tmos coverage is pretty spotty. At my house I'll randomly switch from fast 4g to 2g, even if i didnt move the phone.
Pay the extra loot and switch to Verizon if you want epic signal.

I wish i can cancel it but have 4 lines in order to get new phones
T-Mobile has pretty spotty coverage outside of urban areas, whenever I go on a road trip I spend most of it on edge.

Ok cool so its not just me from what it sounds like. Now I know why t mobile is losing a lot of there post paid accounts most likely from there spotty network
I came from 2 years on att to simple mobile but I can speak on the t mobile signal quality. Compared to att, it should be known that t mobile service is a heck more spotty than others and your data will suffer big time. I went to the middle of no where a few months back with a friend that had att, I had 1 bar and edge in an open field while he had 2 bars with hspa+. He didn't have an lte phone at the time but from experience, att has better coverage. In the same areas t mobile is said to have good coverage and truthfully, although t mobile will roll out lte, I doubt it will be as good. I searched for their new towers, and they have over 10 new ones in Manhattan all clustered up so yeah, t mobile has the best coverage in the ny central park region. Going back to att when I get a job and am able to pay for my own cell. For the time being, simply mobile works good. T mobile will be getting better and better through the years

LMAO @ OP... Cancel service because one time you traveled out of Colorado you don't get 4g??? I mean, if u went to Philly often u would have known this already I'm sure, so its apparent u don't travel to Philly often.
Was a thread really needed? Think if everyone that traveled to an edge location complained and threatened to leave their provider on an internet forum... LOL do whatever u want dude... we really don't care.
Hope u can find enough signal in Philly to read the threads comments

Sorry but I like things to work when I pay 500 out of pocket for a phone. Your phone should be running tip top in every major city no reason for this in 2013. Do some research about t mobile they lost a good bit of post paid customers so Im not the only one that thinks their trash. Their also one of the 3rd most hated companies in the US. I follow them on google plus if anyone needs some citations.
How can you be one of the 3rd? Arent you either 3rd or you are not?
If i helped hit thanks
Whatever have fun with your trash network.
you're your, there their there one of the third? Weigh it for what it's worth......
Good riddance, go pay more for the same service on VZW like all the other dummies, more bandwidth for me, not that I'm lacking any here
