Is there a way to get the tones for incoming texts to be different from the tones for notifications?
I know in hangouts it can be set differently in the app. It is by default. I had to change it back. Ha

Yes, Open Text and hit Menu/Settings/Notification/Notification sound. You can also change it with a app.

Thank you!
That seems to have done the trick. Cant believe i never checked for a settings tab from within the app itself! Stupid me!

Glad I could help.
Depending on how much time you want to spend you can go into your contact list and choose anyone of them and edit. You can assign a different text tone to everyone.

I just jumped from an iPhone to the Galaxy S3. Really loved it until..... I installed GO SMS Pro and started receiving double texts. I reached this extensively on the web and couldn't find any thing that worked so i de-installed it. I then installed Handcent 4.4.3 and low and behold, I get double texts again. I don't get double when i have the native Galaxy text app.
From what i can tell, there may be a way to "turn off" the default text notification but i cant seem to find that anywhere. Surly I am not the only person with problem on the Galaxy. Can anyone help please? Thank you.
open stock messaging app> settings> untick notifications at the bottom

Yep, the info listed above is correct if the problem is that GoSMS Pro and the stock messaging app are both giving notifications. But if one is getting duplicate, the above won't work.

Thank you - that worked.
Having upgraded from an Atrix 4G using Gingerbread to the S3 on ICS, I noticed that I can't use nicknames to select contacts for SMS or Calls? Is this a "Feature" or bug and is there a way to fix it?

I've never heard of it or never used it before. You could ask upndwn4par (he used to make atrix rom's and makes GS3 ones now) and see if he knows anything about it. Good luck
Open the contact and hit edit, scroll to the bottom and click "add another field". Nickname is one of the options.

I have the nicknames in my contacts, but the SMS doesn't recognize them when I input them.

That's a problem with the app then. Seeing as it is on ICS, it could very well be that it needs to be updated. Or perhaps, there's a setting in the messaging app to show nickname instead of name.
You can also try a 3rd party app.

Must have been something that changed in GoSMS from ICS to Jelly Bean. Can't find anything in the settings. Weird because when I search my contacts, the nicknames work.

So why not put their nickname as their name, and list their name as the nickname?

I could do that, but it would be the easy way out.
In my contacts I have a contact called spammers for any computer generated phone calls that I received. I usually have that contact go directly to voicemail so it doesn't ring on my phone. Does the LG g3 have that option? I can't find any option to send to voicemail.
Thanks for any help.

Disregard, I found it buried in the menu under phone.

Can you share how you did it? I'm trying to find the setting but I'm unsuccessful at the moment. Thanks!

Only way I've found to do it on the Verizon LG G3 is to add the number as a contact, then with that contact open open settings and there is a "All calls to voice mail" check box.
Ok I'm running 4.4.2 Sickness Version 2 on a fully rooted S4, is there any way to use different sounds for sms, and email?

.... you can change your SMS sounds in the Sounds menu in Settings... As for the e-mail notification sound, that should be somewhere in your e-mail app's settings.
Thanks, I'll look in there while I have this post pulled up
Ok it works if I use the email app to set up Gmail, but can I change the sound in Gmail on the phone? I'm looking right now
Never mind I found that in the gmail app. if you want to reach through the computer screen and Gibbs smack me for asking before looking feel free to do so

I'll put a shout out for Light Flow. It lets you customize notifications in a very detailed way. It started as an LED flash customizer, and built up from there. I've got three Gmail accounts on my phone... each has a unique sound, LED color, and vibration assigned. So, I can hear, feel, and see the different notifiers. Works great if I'm in a meeting with sound and vibrate off for discretion. a quick glance at the phone shows me if I've got an email in to my "important" GMAIL account, and a different color/flash rate if there was a text waiting.
Check it out. There's a "lite" version of the app but I'm a paid user... it's worth every penny.
Marc
Light flow, I think I'll download that and check it out
Downloaded it, I stalled it

I'm not one to gush over an app, but damn Light Flow rocks. It has changed my relationship with my phone, making it so much easier to understand what's going on. And a lot less annoying!

Hell yea it rocks the only two notifications on my phone now with the sane sound are hand sent sms when I get a text and XDA when I get a notification

There does not seem to be an option to assign messaging tones for individual contacts? Or am I just blind?

Ups... sorry, I misread what you said before...
I never saw that kind of option on a HTC, don't think it's possible with stock apps, but I might be wrong
Correct, HTC phones don't have this option. Which has always puzzled/frustrated me over the years.
I ended up switching to Textra as my texting app. Great customization and performance, including the ability to set individual ringtones for people.
