[Q] Connect as usb drive, with drive letter in Explorer - Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2, 10.1, 8.4 Q&A, Help & Trouble

When I connect my T325 to Win7 via usb, I see 'Galaxy Tab' with subfolders 'Card' and 'Tablet' in Explorer. Is there any way to get drive letters for these? From what I have read here for other devices, this does not seem to be possible.
Also, how do I get to Storage Settings > USB PC connections? It is not on the menu. I can only get there via the notification dropdown after I have connected the USB.

Yeah, you can't. It's MTP, not USB Mass Storage, so no drive-level (cluster-support) access. No drive letters. Possibly you could create a symlink (but not a junction or hard link) for a directory; would that be sufficient?

I doubt it. I would really like to be able to use FreeFileSync on my PC, and some batch files, for three-way backing up desktop -> laptop -> notepad. The nearest I can get to this is with an OTG usb drive and an Android app for folder sync.

I use PureSync for that actually, it supports mtp devices.

Thanks. I am having a go with that, but I am having problems with it hanging and not finding files. I will tinker with it a little longer.

[Q] I Can't access MicroSD through the PC

Hi. I'm new to the forums and android. Sorry if this is not the correct place to post this.
When I connect my phone to the PC via USB I only see a few folders and none of the media files in the phone. I've tried accessing through Media Link and Windows Explorer and nothing.
Weird thing is that I see some folders and photos, like the photos taken with the RetroCamera Application.
I have been able to access my files before, it just suddenly stopped working.
Any ideas?
Try using different USB [if already did]
Go to your Hardware devices, change the MTP devices drivers to USB drivers manually [update them choose them manually from list]
Hopefully you'll get it working again
First, you should make sure that your MicroSD's file system is OK.

Can you access the files with your phone's file browser?if you can do that, the sd card might be OK,then you can check the OS.But if you can't,you may have to format the sd card.
this is normal if USB mode is set to windows media sync, its some kind of security feature I think.
you have 2 options:
1. attempt to access via the moto web phone portal as above, you need to set the USB mode to 'motorola phone portal'. but this I find is a bit hit and miss, you can manually connect using this address:
http://192.168.16.2:8080/webfolder
this can be entered into start -> run, in windows explorer, or mapped directly as a network drive
2. go into USB options and change the mode to 'USB mass storage' this will mount the SD card as a proper removable drive and show all the files properly. This option may not be available depending on what firmware is loaded onto the phone though!
to change USB mode swipe the status/menu bar at the top of the phone down, and tap 'USB connection'

I've used the moto web portal and I was able to access my files, however, it draggs when moving files. Also, the phone was in USB Mass Storage mode the whole time.
Today I connected my phone to my laptop at the office and even though the Motorola Media Link did not pick up my media files, I was able to access them through Windows Explorer. So I'm leaning towards a driver issue with my home PC.
ah ok, maybe the drivers haven't fully installed, check in the device manager to see of you can spot anything. you could also try changing the usb mode to a different setting then back again, see if that kicks the pc into installing the correct drivers
I re-installed the drivers, but still no go.
What surprises me the most is that I can't access or even see some of the folders in my SD Card. The Motorola Media Link recognizes that there is something in the card, but can't tell what it is.
Googling for days, I found this, but I don't know how to do it or even it is related to my problem:
"Finally i solve the problem. And everything in my ext sd card is back. Problem is emmc folder (means external sd card in cyanogenmod 7) not permitted for write and read.
I use QtADB Terminal for editing the directorys permition.
Step 1: type "su"
Step 2: go to root directory. If you type "ls" and can you see "emmc" you are right position.
Step 3: "chmod 777 emmc" or "$chmod 777 emmc" (for write and read permitted.)
Step 4: Reboot the phone and everythings are back in External Sd Card in EMMC
And Windows detect 2 Storage Drive now. One of 6GB Internal Sd Card, One of 8GB External Sd Card. And i can use my Music player Power AMP.
Everythings perfect for me now. Cyanogen is great ROM but this permision problem should bu fixed. Because i spend three day for solve this problem."

[Q] USB Mass storage replacement?

Hi
I have my gnex since 4 month and I still search for a solution to replace the usb mass storage option that I had with my motorola defy(RIP).
So I was used to use USB mass storage for:
1- Store Keepass DB on SDcard and access it with Keepass Droid or Keepass portable (on my laptop) which point to my sdcard.
2- open and modify document on my SDcard
I know that there's dropbox or other online service but they are prohibited at work.
The other option I think of is that all the file from my phone automatically sync to my laptop when I plug the usb cable but I don't know how to do that!
Any suggestion?
Thanks
Daniel
You will never be able to setup the Galaxy Nexus to use USB Mass Storage.
MTP still lets you access files on your phone's virtual "SDcard" (just the /sdcard/ directory).

I know but i'm looking for other way to achieve this!
Having the phone syncing file automaticaly on the laptop when connected would solve my problem!
I want my file sync with the laptop file like folder sync do but with the usb cable to the laptop.
Thanks

Really don't think there's a way to do this. You're stuck with MTP on this phone.

I use a WebDAV server app to mount my GN's storage on my computers. The app I use is called "WebDAV server" and can be found on Google Play. Once you start this app on your phone, you can use a WebDAV client program on your computer to mount the phone storage as a Windows drive or Mac shared folder. I use Windows and the free-for-personal use program called NetDrive as the WebDAV client. I don't believe I've found any difference between doing this and having the storage available as a USB mass storage device.

[Q] Can't connect to PC as a disk drive, only as Portable Device - is this normal?

I've had my HTC One X for 2 days and I want to ask if this is a normal behavior or something is wrong. When I connect the phone to PC via USB I can access the files only using Windows Explorer. It appears there under "Portable Devices" as "HTC One X". When I double-click there is folder called "Internal Storage" with my files in it. But, is it possible to mount the phone as a regular disk drive (with disk letter assigned, for example E:\), so I can browse the files using Total Commander? I've tried different USB ports but without success. I believe my drivers are working fine.
I've been looking over similar topics here but everyone was talking about looking into "Connect to PC" option in Settings. But I don't have such an option in my Settings! Is it normal? My old Desire had it and I could choose Charge Only/Disk Drive/USB Tethering etc.
When I plug my One X to the computer, the "USB Connected" notification pops up. But when I click on the notification, there are only Hotspot, USB network and Bluetooth options. Nothing related to connection type. See troll.sk/random/scr_usb.png
I've tried turning on/off the USB debugging, but it's still the same.
Is this normal behavior of Jelly Bean 4.1.1?
Edit: when I access Clockwork mod there is an option to mount the USB Drive. When I select this option the internal storage of the phone magically appears in my computer as a regular disk drive just as I wanted. But it's possible only in recovery mod, never happens in normal interface.
Yes... It has been changed after jb update.

Yep this is normal. Google is changing the way that device storage is handled, and as a result this new way has been rolled out by HTC in their JB update. The device will be mounted as a MTP/FTP device instead of the traditional USB storage method.
There is no way that you can mount your device as an USB storage (as E:\ drive, etc.)
BUT, there are a few other ways that you can do this:
1] If you have rooted your phone, you can mount your phone as a USB storage via clockworkmod recovery.
2] If you have NOT rooted your phone, you can download an application called AIRDROID from the market. This will wirelessly allow you to mount your phones USB storage.(But works ONLY on wifi)

So what is the trick if this has been ticked the whole time but still won't show up? I've glot CM 10.2, MTP is checked, when plugged in the laptop it shows up at the bottom on the task bar & then when I right click it says Nexus 7.
My device shows up under devices & printers, but not under computer when clicking the start menu on the PC & clicking computer. My HDD, DVD drive & SD card all show up, but no N7 so I can't transfer files.
Am I missing something else?

Please elaborate a bit. What I understood is :
Nexus 7 doesnot show up like an SD card etc but as a mobile device yet you can not transfer stuff ?
It doesnot show up like a drive. For me, on Windows 7, it shows up like a mobile device in other devices with the name "Nexus 7". If i click it , I get into the internal memory. You can not rename folders or transfer files within Nexus(as it is used by the Nexus itself so it can not be changed). However, try copy a file from PC to your nexus. Does that work? If yes, that is perfectly normal. Use a file explorer like ES file explorer to rename and transfer files within Nexus. But Es file explorer has some bugs with JB 4.3 esp with extracting a rar file.
If this doesnot solve it, I remember there was also some settings for it. I can not remember though as I havenot used the latest CM 10.2.

So the first picture is of devices. You can see the N7 is shown, but clicking it only takes me to the info about the device. No way to transfer stuff. Right clicking gives me eject, troubleshoot, properties.
The second is the windows section where it shows the HDD, etc. No N7. I was expecting it to show up to be able to transfer files from computer to the device as in a mass storage device. I did this with the last one where I could see everything on the device.
I have a 600mb file I want to transfer to the tablet & was expecting to just copy it over.

I am attaching my pictures how I see my nexus when it is connected. You do not see Nexus 7 if it is not connected properly or not enabled from Nexus settings.
Does your device charge when you connect to the PC ?
Does your device connect in USB debugging mode ?
Further, go into device manager in My computers and see if there are any question marks on any device? Make sure your device is connected at that time.
Try to connect it to different port or without USB hub if you are using as sometimes, devices do not show up.
Moreover, try to connect your device to the PC and then tick on MTP and then change few options like connect via different methods and see if any usb connection is seen ?
Also, close all other mobile softwares in the background and taskbar (Kies, Sony PC companion, LG, Nokia PC suit) and then try connecting it.
They are many a times culprits. Even try uninstalling their drivers and programmes.
IF USB DEBBUGGING WORKS AND CHARGING, DRIVERS ARE PERFECTLY INSTALLED IN THE PC
YOUR PROBLEM SEEMS TO ME FROM NEXUS SETTINGS.
IT SIMPLY COULD BE A BUG AS CM is still nightly
I hope this helps

May be a CM bug. I just connected my Galaxy Nexus running 4.2.2 AOKP & I just transferred files from my phone to computer.
The N7 is connected, charging, debugging works, etc. So i'll keep waiting to see what the deal is with each new CM install.
I do appreciate all of the suggestions. Should have tested it on CleanRom before flashing CM to see if it was working then.

Your usb stick is not a computer, it does not need to read your phone with MTP protocol.
The phone should provide power to the USB stick, exactly as it is saying, so that your phone can read the contents of the USB stick.
Get a File Manager like FX to transfer items to and from your USB stick.
I have the same problem. It always says usb charging and I could not transfer pictures to my usb using the usb-c/usb adaptor. I tried using file manager app but I get confused with all these asking permissions and I end up unable to transfer anything. I never had this problem with my S7 edge before. I tried connecting the phone directly to the mac using android file transfer but could not connect. I would really appreciate if someone can give us a more detailed steps on how.

I tried that I have ES file explorer like "edsol" said it won't mount the stick because it's in charging mode
I tried several time to switch it off of charging mode but always flips back after a few seconds.
if "edsol" has the same problem then I guess it's not just my phone........there must be a fix for this??
I had the same situation, and I had to format the USB stick in "exFAT" to be able to copy files to it. NTFS is supported only for reading, but not for writing.
So check that your USB stick is not NTFS.
FAT32 and exFAT are the same, the difference is that exFAT doesn't have the FAT32 limitations (maximum file size of 4 GB)

Thanks...but it is exFat......I did a reformat just incase.......still a no go ??
you probably need some file manager to do what you want, Android sucks when it comes to manual file management.
Anyway I have ES file explorer loaded on my phone, so plugged in USB c to USB2 adapter, put in 32 GB FAT32 memory stick, ES file exp. open up and I transferred couple files from stick to SD, just to test it if it works. It did, but you would have to pay me a lot of money to do it on regular basis, so awkward. I just plug my phone to PC and use windows click and drag to move files around. Now I run into problem, when I was transferring my pictures, couple days ago, F???? Android lock my sd card for no reason (F????? Google is messing SD cards on phones since at least kitkat). I had to fix sd and take write protect off, but I'm sure it's Google not Samsung. Anyway, it works like a charm, just watch out for Google's broken permissions showing it's ugly head.
What File Explorer are you using? Some of them can't write to external storage because of Marshmallow permissions.
"My Files" of Samsung worked for me while "ES File Explorer" didn't work (before root)
I used ES File Explorer, I'm sorry I said wrong in my previous post, I moved couple files to phones DCIM folder, not SD, it's so awkward and I just wanted to see if it works at all, it did, I confirmed the files were moved, before deleting them. So actually I don't know if it would work on SD card, but I would never ever transfer files like that: I would use my pc laptop for direct transfer between SD and stick. So the concept I described works, but as far as permissions to particular folders go, they're so messed up and don't even want to test it again against SD. In theory it should work at least for transfer to root directory, since card is not protected, may not work for transfer to folders created by other programs due to permissions. At some point I may have to root this phone just to fix those stupid permissions, but I haven't used Marshmallow until now, so not sure how broken those permissions are here.
