[Q] How to check panel_id in 4.4.2 kitkat - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The Z1 compact comes default with kitkat 4.4.2. How do I check the panel_id without root? I just need to find out whether it is a JDI or AUO panel. This can be done easily in 4.3 and now I am getting permission denied when trying to open the /sys/devices/mdss_dsi_panel/panel_id file. Any help would be appreciated. Do I need to downgrade to 4.3 in order to check this and then flash back 4.4.2?

You need to read it using something with root privileges e.g. es file explorer
It is no longer world readable as of KitKat - Sony must be keeping an eye on this forum

If I download the 4.3 firmware from somewhere and flash my phone to 4.3 and check the panel_id file, is the panel_id original to my phone or is it part of the firmware from the source?

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7105

Dear Experts,
I am a noob to android. I am holding a Singapore Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7105. Have not update to the latest firmware.
Before I update, I would like to know the below:
Please teach me the followings:
1) What does flashing of firmware do?
2) What is root for?
3) If I have update to the current latest firmware, can I still flash / root it?
Thank in advance.
1) What does flashing of firmware do?
It give u a new update to system files or apps or any bug fixes to give better performance over the previous one
2) What is root for?
Rooting a linux distro means giving a super user access to a system. Providing u can access or modify root files and folder
3) If I have update to the current latest firmware, can I still flash / root it?
Yes, u can flash and root it

Yes
If at all possible let the phone upgrade to the latest software, in no time and probably already here, then root the new software. just search "how to root YOUR MODEL, and you will get the answer.
I will try to type an accurate description of step-by-step as you go.

It says that the previous version must be rooted. Bt mine wasnt rooted.
I rooted my device by unlocking bootloader
So if u r ready then i can help u
Pm me

May be later. I dont wanna unlock bootloader now.
You need to go back to 4.2 and use NUTS method to flash to 4.3 with root
Unlocking bootloader makes us to lose DRM keys. But to backup ta partition, rooting is required. To root, bootloader unlocking is required. Wtf
Downgrade is only option mate

So hw can i backup my TA?
Simple steps:
1. Downgrade to 4.2.2 (67 firmware) by flashing the ftf file of your region. Search the ZL thread to find your ROM on 67 fw.
2. Root the 67 firmware by bin4ry's method or cubeundcube method.
3. Make a TA backup using DevShaft's method. This is important for relocking your bootloader.
4. Upgrade to 101 using PCC or SUS. You will lose root. Make a ftf file of the update files that has been downloaded to your computer using flashtool.
5. Unlock bootloader from Sony. You will lose DRM.
6. Flash a custom kernel by Doomlord or Gustavo RD78. This is a modified stock kernel with cwm recovery built-in.
7. Now download the latest 1.94 update super su.zip from chainfire's website. Store it in your ext micro SD card. Flash it to root your phone from the cwm recovery.
8. To get back to stock recovery, use the ftf file created at step 4 above. Flash only the kernel and fotakernel from the ftf file.
9. Now relock your bootloader by flashing the ta backup you made at step 3. Now your phone is rooted with locked bootloader on 101 firmware.
10. Enjoy!
I made a similar help thread for Sony Xperia Z here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2656698.
Go though the thread except using the custom kernel in that thread. That kernel is Z specific. For the ZL use the advanced stock kernel by Doomlord or Gustavo RD78 in the dev section. Link for kernel for ZL is here:

Rooted now.
I'm sorry, but isn't flashing 4.2.2 version (ftf .67), then rooting with kingo, then upgrading to .101 via OTA a much easier procedure?

Kingo steals your IMEI and phone information while it roots. Some malware package is dropped onto your phone ( a long alpha numeric gibberish folder name with a dot in the begining to hide it). The folder is copied onto your phone's external SD card as well as onto your internal memory. This folder contains a .nomedia file sized 80 bytes, which is funny 'coz all nomedia files are 0 byte files. The file has some code stored in it, which is very suspicious. Avoid Kingo, vroot and all such Chinese fly-by night closed-source root methods that require an internet connection to root your phone.

Ok, sounds enough arguments for at least try another method. By the time I was rooting my device (a couple of months ago), kingo was the only method I could get my unlocked bootloader phone to keep root after upgrading to latest firmware through OTA (it was .569 back then). If someone is willing to point me (while I look by myself) to the method you followed to get root on a .101 firmware with a locked bootloader (mine can't be unlocked, AFAIK) I'll be more than glad!
Thanks for your comments.

Thanks for your guide!
But, what if my device's bootloader is not unlockable? On its information says: NO (to unlock bootloader) =(
No root for me?
Will we get root for 4.4 anyway? Aren't our dear developers (like the good @DooMLoRD) interested in helping us anymore?

[Q] Re-root after 4.4.3 update

Hi.
I have been rooted my Xperia T2 Dual.
But after finishing new Sony update to 4.4.3 (firmware 19.1.1.C.0.56) my root access is removed.
I tried to re-root my device in old ways such as Easy Root or DooMLoRD Easy Rooting Toolkit but any of them didn't work.
Do you have any idea how to re-root T2 Dual in android 4.4.3 ???
Thanks.

Thank You so much for your complete explanations.
I've done that and my phone is rooted.
BUT when I want to update my SuperSu, it fails!
And when I want to access to my system folders by other programs, they said that your phone is rooted but can't grant RW permission on /system folder.
What should I do?!

Problems after Downgrade

Hi peeps
i seem to be having problems after downgrading from lollipop to kitkat 4.4.2 and used kHz file uk 10a
i did the whole kdz method n flash tool and although it worked and i am back to stock i can no longer edit APN details and also i can not update software in anyway.
iI have tried hard reset to see if this fixes the issues but no it doesn't, my computer no longer sees my device and also the same in LG suite, device not found blah blah.
I should also say with all this i wanted to also get rid of Mcafee but i can also not root my device now from what i can see, i can enter download mode but i also find it doesn't work
If anyone can give me some heads up ideas to solve this problem that would be fantastic
What's "kHz file uk 10a"? Kilohertz?
Don't use any shady .kdz files. If you search for lg g3 kdz files you end up on an XDA website where everyone shares his official .kdz link. Flash one of those .kdzs for your device and if you're using any v10x kdz you can root it.

hi thanks for asking
I'm now running kitkat 4.4.2 after the downgrade and the version I'm running is V10a-234-20
I suggest to root it with Stump root
- Download Stump Root app and copy it to your device: Click here
- Open File Manager app and install the Apk file. Do not forget to check Unknown sources option under Settings> Security on your device.
- Having installed the app, open Stump Root from app drawer and tap the Grind button. Stump Root will greet you with a melody while the device is being rooted.
- Wait till Stump Root works its magic and allow the device to reboot when you are prompted to do so.
- When you phone boots up, install SuperSU app by Chainfire (download it in playstore)
- To verify root access on your device, download a root checker app and run it.
- Then download TWRP: Click Here
- Flash it with Flashify (download it in playstore)
- Flash any ROM you want to make your G3 like a new one

ES file explorer root access problem

Hello
I have a rooted Samsung Note 10.1 2014, with lollipop 5.1.1 installed. I have tried the give ES file explorer root access, (in the tools drop down menu), but it gives me error : "Sorry, test failed. This feature cannot run on your device".
Secondly, when i go to the toolbox in ES file explorer it gives me error " Failed to update data" and nothing shows up.
I've a rooted Samsung Note 3, with 4.4.2, and ES file explorer works fine in that.
Can someone help or guide me here?
thanks

Same problem with Samsung S4 mini i9195 with Android 6.0.1 AICP rom. It works fine with Note 10.1 2014 P600 and stock rom 5.1.1.
Have you verified your properly rooted with a root checker? I was having similar issues with both ES and Titanium Backup a few months ago and it turned out I had lost root access somehow. I re-rooted it and everything worked perfectly again.... no problems since then.
If you have 5.1.1 you need a modified kernel for root access... Don't have the modified kernel then you can flash root until it kills your tablet but you might as well smash your head against the wall to get rid of a headache.

How or where can this modified kernel be found?
My 5.1.1 LL is rooted, but somehow i cant write changes to system folder....i tried using 3rd-app to enable all apps to run in multiwindow on stock 5.1.1 but it keeps saying my sytem its read only, this happens even if i enable rw permisions from drop down menu of file managers like solid explorer!
Has anyone managed to write and save changes to system folder?

Yes, I have root access that can write to system files and modify them..
Here is a link tomodified P605 Kernel - http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...rnel-stock-selinux-permissive-kernel-t3232814
And, if by some miracle you havent had Knox go to 0x1, this will do that. Be aware...
Does Any one know how to add all installed apps to the multiwindow function?
ie. Patch the framework to allow this!

I'm not sure if this app works on lollipop as I'm not running a stock rooted lollipop ROM, but it worth a try. I do know it does work with a stock rooted kit kat rom though. Hope that helps

Hi Guys, this is a known problem as it is doing it to my Xperia Z5 DUAL(using MM) as well.
I found this: https://disqus.com/home/discussion/mjdseo/how_to_enable_root_browsing_in_es_file_explorer/newest/
But the guy who found the solution by repatching the actual app is of no help to me. I want ES File Explorer to fix this!! As i dont like any other file explorer.

I had the same problem with es file explorer. Flashing super su 2.68 with with twrp solved the problem on my p600.
Newer super su versions are maybe not compatible with file explorer.
