yes i have installed htc sync and all the drivers req for the desire to work. says USB device not recognized (malfunction) but the phone shows HBOOT USB *SOMETIMES* so. Would i would LOVE is a way of wiping it completely and start a fresh. i tried to install a rom via SD card but it only seems to look for the Previous rom installed (PD98IMG)
It may be worth completely removing all traces of HTC Sync and drivers (purge properly and manually), use USB on other side of PC (so if using front ports, use rear) and reinstalling software. Can't help with exact details of that as I use a Linux OS so I don't have to **** about with all that nonsense.
The biggest hurdle I think is getting your PC to recognise phone. Once done everything else is easily fixable.

Hey,
the problem is i broke (half display broken) my phone and since it was out of the warranty period i gave it to a local cellphone seller/repair shop who fixed it but downgraded the firmware and android version 2.3.7 (CyanogenMod 7.1) to stock 2.2.1 .....The phone is still S-OFF with HBOOT 1.01.0002...but when i connect my phone with USB to the computer i dont get the USB logo from which i can select disk drive, htc sync etc. i gave it back but the person said it would cost another Rs.2500 (approx. $50) so there is no point.
Is there anyway i could root the phone ? I guess i know the answer but still since im a noob at this...maybe
Thanks in advance :good::fingers-crossed:

Check you phone setting in the connect to PC setting as follow:
Go to > Setting > Connect to PC > Ask me (Tick = Enable). Enable this will ask your choice of USB connection if connected.
Try to change the default connection type to Disk drive if you need to transfer file.
Alternative way of transfer file from PC to your phone sdcard will be using bluetooth.

Thanx, if you could help more it would be amazing (pressed Thanks anyways :highfive: )
what i meant was this...
Drop box.......
Or download a PC49IMG.zip containing clockwork mod recovery from here directly to your phone, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12782368
You'll then need the superuser binaries in a flashable zip too to get root on the stock rom however I think cm7 and most custom roms are pre rooted.
Edit:
The phone is still S-OFF with HBOOT 1.01.0002..
Or did you s-off via HTC dev? If so you'll need the fast boot method.

Yeah, was S-OFF'd and rooted + flashed with CM7.1 before its broke. i had used HTC dev site to unlock bootloader, then downgraded the HBOOT and then rooting it using UnrEVOked method.
I think i should mention that revolutionary opened on recovery but i couldnt select any options so i flashed it from 'ROM manager' app. (could this have something to do with anything whatsoever ?)
I am sorry for this but could you please explain or post a link by what you mean by this ?

im sorry for the trouble but i am new at all this and my study is not even related to all this but i just am fascinated by all this and try and read as much as possible and try it out

i tried that again, but as i said earlier the computer does not detect that the phone is connected to it. I tried it with 2 other laptops and a computer, all of which do detect my other phone.

Unfortunately I've cleared out my drop box now and don't have it anymore, can someone upload a superuser zip for him please?
It contains all the files required to install superuser or in simple terms root the phone, you simply flash it from recovery but first you need to get clockworkmod recovery up and running.
As for the recovery, I don't understand what you mean by it opens to revolutionary but can't select anything?
Firstly you are using the trackball to select an item, not the power button.
Secondly rom manager is overhyped and can't give you a permanent recovery. The PC49IMG method won't work after the HTC dev downgrade I don't think, so the only way to flash a new recovery is by using fastboot, its all explained in the link I posted above.

Sorry I didn't see that, well if all your computers don't see the phone that rules out your USB cable being broken provided your using the same cable between the wildfire and sensation. The only 2 things I can think of stopping it from working could be the mini USB port on the side of the phone is broke but I suppose your still getting a charger to work so its probably not that, the 2nd thing could be driver related, uninstall all the drivers for the phone and also htc sync, reboot the PC and then reinstall them and try again.
If that doesn't work then I'm stumped, unfortunately I don't think there is a way to root without USB as you can't use the pc49img.zip method to install recovery. Thank HTC dev for that.......

Hmm i tried that, nothing doing.... i just with the root was as easy as samsung...HTC has too much hassle there is a hardware problem and i was anyways doubtful there could be a way.
Anyways, thank you all so so very much for your help and time. much much appreciated :good:
Yeh they supposedly unlocked the bootloader with HTC dev tool........
Only they didn't unlock it fully, the radio partition is still locked + hboot still has security enabled which you've just found out
After reading the HTC dev website warnings when it was first released I and others tried to warn people away from it for these reasons as it can just make life difficult when it doesn't need to be. I know the other way is a bit more confusing and takes a bit more time but definitely worth it as it unlocks everything except the simlock.
Samsungs are easy, altogether it took me 3 minutes without even touching the computer.
Anyway you have a sensation to play with, I'd sell the wildfire while they are still worth £30 ish to a second hand shop like cash converters or something if you have anything like that nearby, don't mention the USB problem they most likely won't check it thoroughly, good luck........

Well, firstly htcdev does not give s-off only unlocked boot loader so you phone must have met a xtc clip at some stage. You should take the pg49img.zip posted here before and put it on the root of the SD card. Then turn off the phone. Then hold power and volume down. The device will boot to hboot and ask you if you want to update. Select yes. Then reboot to hboot and scroll down to recovery and then select it. Then flash the super user zip file and you will be rooted. Also enable USB debugging and then connect to PC and see if it shows us.

Hi,
I want to root my One X (international) but I get stopped straight away because my phone won't connect to my computer. When I plug the USBs to both my computer and my phone nothing happens, except charging. There are no options given and the phone doesn't show up as a drive on the computer.
I've installed HTC Synch Manager, tried 4 USB cords, tried 3 computers, I've switched on USB Debugging.
The HOX is on Android 4.1.1
Any ideas? I've scoured many forums to no avail. I'd really like to try some custom roms.
Cheers,
Hello
I have the same problem with my HOX and no solution
Gr
Are you saying there is no solution or that you don't know of one? Can someone confirm that this is a known and unresolvable problem or should I keep looking for a solution?
I will have a try then.....the bootloader is untouched (locked) and the phone has never been detected by the pc before ?
Also interesteded in what OS you are running !
Do you have the latest HTC usb drivers installed? Have you checked in device manager to see if phone is visible? Latest version of HTC sync installed?

Thanks. I bought the phone second hand from a young lass who had broken the screen (which I have replaced) so I presume the phone is standard and been updated to 4.1.1.
Some software information:
Software number 3.14.862.27
HTC SDK API level 4.63
Kernel version:3.1.10-g5ebf4bc [email protected]#1 SMP PREEMPT
I don't know if the phone has ever been detected by a computer before. I have installed the latest HTC Sych Manager on my Vista computer and no, the phone isn't detected in the device manager.
Although I have rooted my previous phone (Defy) and had kept up to date with the latest roms I am still fairly new at this.
Thanks for any help.

That's what I thought but I get nothing except charge. That is why I've tried a number of cables. I'm suspecting my micro USB socket is faulty. I've cleaned it and even checked how it's mounted. Solidly soldered so I'm checking every other avenue before replacing it as I have a dead Hox for spares.

Ok. So is it your opinion that I'm stymied? Are there any other avenues I can try?
The phone is pretty good the way it is, I just like playing around with Roms etc. I'd also like to get rid of the Vodafone crap.
My guess something is broken somewhere in the usb connection....ofcourse, otherwise it would be recognized. But you figured that out already. Maybe a phone repair shop can take a quick peek at it ?
Otherwise your stuck on what you have now.
Well, it connects to the PC, but it only charges so I think this might be a software bug. Maybe you could try to root it and see if it fails at adb commands. My guess is that it will work. Just follow a rooting guide CAREFULLY and don't skip any steps.

First make sure usb debugging is on in settings. Maybe unlocking the bootloader and rooting will work. It's done from the fastboot usb screen where adb and fastboot commands should work. Give it a try before sending for repair.

I definitely agree with his idea, but the first thing you should do is completely restore you're one x.
Then check in hboot, that's power volume down wether the device is locked or relocked.
After that get the latest drivers, connect your hox in fastboot and try to unlock your device via HTC devs.com
Good Luck.
P.S. tell us what happens, we might find a solution all together

I've done a factory reset, checked that Debugging is on and checked in Hboot, it says *** LOCKED ***
I've connected the HOX to my Vista computer in which I've installed HTC Synch Manager. I presume this installs the latest drivers?
My Hox is still not recognised by the computer. When I request the identifier token it gets stuck on < Waiting for device >
Have I followed your instructions correctly?
Edit 1: Just to be sure I repeated the procedure on my desktop computer which is also running Vista. Same results.
Is there any way of extracting the identifier token within the phone?
Edit 2: I pulled the motherboard out and checked the micro USB port with a microscope. Pretty grotty inside so I cleaned, tightened and checked it. All clean but still no computer connection.

The phone is charging, but it's still not over 30%. I'm running the .exe file you proposed (many thanks!) but it won't load it as the battery is under 30%.
I've left my phone to charge on the laptop and will try again in a couple of hours, once it gets more juice (hopefully).
I tried checking battery status on adb, but I get an error message "device not connected" or "not found" (cannot remember which).
Put the phone in the bootloader and execute the script from the fastboot folder on the pc !
Or enter the custom recovery and charge the battery in there

Dear men, let's clarify first one thing: I'm a woman!
So, got back, the phone was switched off, no charging light or any indication. After messing with my phone a bit, connecting it to my mac and then pc, I got the bootloader back.
Battery level went down.
I erased cache. I'm letting it charge a bit more and then see if I can enter recovery (right now it's impossible). But wait, can I enter recovery since I've relocked the phone?
Oh dear ! Apologies
Never tried to acces the recovery with a locked bootloader but it should be possible. Or try to unlock it and flash a custom recovery to charge in there. You need 10% of power to do that.
Edit :
You need a custom recovery to charge .....charging in a stock recovery won't work. Just for info

Sooo... in order to re-lock it, do I follow the original procedure that I used in first place? From the HTC dev website etc etc? Or is there a simpler way to do it nowadays?
Thank you very much for the help guys!

Then the only way is to charge the phone switched off, or running the batt script.
Relocking is done with a fastboot command
Fastboot oem lock
And unlocking can be done with the unlock_code.bin file you got the first time in the mail from htc. Put the file in the fastboot folder and use this command to unlock the bootloader again if you wish
Fastboot flash unlocktoken unlock_code.bin
Hi there!
I've just fixed my One X. I had a problem with the ROM and not workind ADB, I was stuck and couldn't reinstall an another ROM because I couldn't acces the phone memory and nothing.
Don't know in which case you're stuck now, but if you want to reinstall an another ROM just use the "HTC One X All in one tool" and reinstal Clockwork recovery, when done with that, push an another ROM to your "sdcard" using ADB, flash the boot.img and reinstall the ROM.
Only issue is that you lose your data!
This really worked for me, I was stuck with this problem for lets say 16 hours without a brake, and I've DONE IT!!

I have previously rooted and unlocked via the HTC developers code that they sent to me, and that all went fine. However, now my PC will not recognize the phone when it is in fastboot, and the HBOOT menu says I am ***TAMPERED***
Phone is recognized via HTC Sync program, and will go throught the initial steps in the RUU update file from HTC.com but as soon as the bootloader starts up, I is unrecognized again...
If anyone has any ideas or recommendations, or if there is any more information I can give you, please let me know.
Thanks in advance!

If you were unlocked and s-on then you must relock bootloader before updating with ruu.
Just type this in fastboot, without the quotes
"Fastboot oem lock" in command prompt.

how would one do this if phone is not recognized in fastboot mode via adb?
uninstall htc sync. drivers will stay. sync gets in the way sometimes. I just used the ruu from the htc site and the setup wizard did it all. very easy, you could do it that way, no need to relock bootloader. or flash one of the Jellybean roms jmz has out. that would be the easiest way.
Thanks. Tried uninstalling HTC sync, and rebooting my pc. Still hangs when the phone restarts into bootloader. Still telling me it is unrecognized...

hboot and fastboot menus are the same. the tampered part is because of the custom recovery. if you are selecting fastboot and pc is not detecting the device, thats odd. if you havent, change usb port and cable.
it is possible to get drivers issues with fastboot/hboot. when connecting usb cable after fastboot is selected does it change to FASTBOOT USB?
did you turn USB debugging on? are you going to fastboot after going into the bootloader?

I have tried with about 3 different USB cables, and every different available USB port. all to no avail. If i select fastboot manually by holding the power and volume down, then it will say fastboot, until I push the volume up or down, then it will switch to fastboot usb.
when the RUU program triggers a reboot into the fastboot mode (I'm assuming that's what it is trying to do, anyway) it just hangs on a black screen with a big white HTC logo, until the program times out and I have to exit. Restarting the phone is no issue, because it just starts up like normal.

USB debugging is on, and see above reply regarding fastboot.
Thanks everyone for their help so far...I know we can get to the bottom of this!

Do "fastboot oem rebootRUU". You should see the device in device manager. Then run the ruu again.

Same deal if I reboot to fastboot via ADB or manually with the phone. As soon as I enter fastboot, no longer recognized by the computer.

you said that the phone gets into black screen with htc white letters. that means normal fastboot still works because the RUU sends that same command. i ask you again to check windows device manager and see if your device is there. if its not, try unplug and replug usb cable.
Unplugging and plugging the cord back in did nothing. Device manager lists the device as unknown. It says something about device reporting error.

OK. I will try that. I'm running a system I built myself with Windows 8. Do you think that windows 8 is causing some issues? my wife's laptop is still windows 7...I will try that tonight. fingers crossed!
So I tried on windows 7, and the RUU is able to get as far as the part that says updating signature, at which point it sits there for a few minutes, then gives me error 132 and tells me to download the correct rom update utility for my phone??!
Is there any chance that having twrecovery is causing this? If so, an ideas on how to go back to stock recovery?

If you are s-on then you have to relock bootloader to flash ruu.
