Suppose one has a small set of requirements for changes to make one's Nexus 7 useful for a particular requirement.
How does one go about finding the right modded kernel/rom combination for the job??
My current requirements are, as far as I can see from my initial considerations:
The OTG charging mod, i e it must be possible to charge the Nexus 7 2013 using high current while using the USB connector in OTG mode.
I need to be able to mount a large (32GB or more) NTFS or FAT32 USB stick inside the normal file system, so that any app can use the stick for file access and storage.
I need to be able to use a class compliant two-way record/play USB Audio Interface, and/or use something like the Audio Evolution Digital Audio Workstation app for field audio recording in pro quality, while simultaneously using a USB stick for storing the recorded audio.
SO, how would I go about finding workable kernel, rom and add-on-apps to enable this on the Nexus 7 2013 WiFi tablet?
The ElementalX kernel has OTG charging built in and will work with Ntfs/Fat32/exFat

Well, yes, that answers my current specific needs, possibly. Thank you!
(BTW what ROM would you recommend for use with the ElementalX kernel???)
However, what I asked was more about a general method of finding a kernel+rom suited to some random specific need.
Is there a list of what kernels and roms do? Is there some part of the XDA site where this kind of info can be found??
Is there some part of XDA or somewhere else where people test kernels+roms? To find limitations?

As for the rom do you prefer speed or customisability?
If you mean how kernels perform with each rom you can find that in the Kernel's thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2389022
:good:
Each kernel has its own thread that tells exactly what it does and then users and the developer discuss all of it throughout the thread.
So you're saying there's NO rational way: You ALWAYS have to wade thru massive amounts of partly unrelated text, not all in any sort of reasonably obvious place or in any sort of rational structure.
Well.
Or ASK outright, and hope somebody just happens to have given the same question some thought recently??
Ah well. Forums, I guess.

ElementalX has a caf kernel and an AOSP kernel. Thus you can use about any ROM you want with it just so you choose the correct corresponding kernel. There are a couple of lists that list many of the ROM's, kernels, recoveries etc. but there is no list that goes through each function of every ROM. That would be near impossible to keep up because devs change their builds all the time. AOSP might add or remove functions and now the devs have to work around it. There is just to much change to realistically keep a list like that and have it be accurate at all times.

NOTE: The settings in the general tab are only functional in kernels that have implemented the simple sysfs interfaces for usb fast charging and audio boost. If you toggle them, its not going to break anything, but they won't work and the app may crash. If you would like your kernel dev to implement the interfaces, please direct them to these two commits:

NOTE2: It is a requirement of the HAVS adjustment that the kernel you are using has the HAVS sysfs interface implemented. If it does not, it will not work.
NOTE3: Before using, please delete any boot scripts you may have in /etc/init.d that toggle any of the settings this app controls.

Please confirm if this works or not. Tiamat 1.0.4 has:
ported sysfs interface for VDD levels from Tiamat_8x50 (cayniarb, eviollet)
But I'm not sure where the path to the levels are since I can't find the commit in his git.
EDIT: I found the commit, it looks like its SVS. I will update later and post a new build. I need an individual who is proficient with using adb or the terminal emulator to please pm me.

No it does not. I don't really like to do kernels for devices I don't have because its difficult to properly test. If someone comes across an extra device that they are willing to donate I'd be more than happy to start working on one though.

Then you will have to wait for a sense kernel that supports sysfs voltage changing. Sorry. I'm sure one will come around pretty quickly.
07/28/11 - Preview 5-2
Changes include:
A restore defaults button. NOTE: You must reboot for the changes to take effect.
A text box that lets you know if you currently have saved boot settings or not.
Support for SVS kernels (and subsequently support for msm7x30 devices, e.g. inc2)
Started to work toward database storage of voltages instead of boot scripts. There is still a boot script, but it has been relocated to /etc and is now run by a service at startup.
NOTE: As of now, the only inc2 kernel that supports voltage adjustment is Tiamat 1.0.4

Hey everyone!
Just got an EVO the other day and I have a unique situation.
I'm not utilizing a carrier, I bought this phone from Craigslist, works great, utilizing google voice and groove ip for sms/phone with Verizon Mobile Hotspot for internet via wifi/tether.
That said... I'm curious about phones with similar hardware and flashing roms/kernels.
Is the radio in control of my wifi?
What I mean is... is it possible to flash other roms from other parts of XDA with similar hardware, such as the Nexus One? The research I did tells me they have basically the same hardware so I was curious.
My main reason? I am utilizing CM7 but unless I missed something somewhere, there isn't really an AOSP rom for this phone that is UV/OC? I've seen the sense ones but that's it.
Just curious what you guys might make of my situation and suggestions you may have for me? I almost feel like I'm in unchartered waters lol. Just need wifi to work so I can tether to my hotspot and of course the speaker/mic to work for calls, then it's just a matter of software/apps etc...
Any ideas, suggestions or questions are welcomed. Thanks!

Very insightful, thank you so much.
I guess I should note. I'm not an idiot... I just don't understand development inside and out... If you said "it won't work because the flux capacitor won't jolt to 1.21 jiggawatts" (that's a Jay-Z measured watt) then I would take that, but your response was very unwarranted.
Again, thanks for the input.
If any DEVS have an educated answer I would be greatly appreciative
If you flash a rom from another phone, you will either get booloops (if you're lucky) or a very nice paperweight / brick.
Many of the roms in the evo dev section are ports from other devices that take months to complete so they are safe to use or even boot on an evo.
So to reiterate, don't do it.

I'm a Sense guy, and I'm assuming you want AOSP so I'll tell you what I run when I do run AOSP, it never fails me
Deck's ROM or MIUI with Tiamat 4.1.0 SBC kernel
The kernel would be in charge of UV/OC and Wi-Fi
Use Amon Ra as recovery
Wipe everything except for SD card twice
Flash ROM
Navigate to mounts menu and mount everything except for SDext
Flash kernel
Flash Vipermod (allows undervolt)
Reboot.
Reboot.
Go to terminal and type:
su
vipermod
Choose how much you want to undervolt. And usually I undervolt by -50
Type in 10 to save changes.
Reboot.
I almost always underclock. To OC/UC, go Settings-Advanced Settings for Deck's and set at boot or Download No Frills CPU for MIUI (have to go to Superuser app and hit menu button and allow root)
Do not flash anything from a different phone... Mount points are different, different kernels and it would be an absolute mess

As most users on XDA, I've got a rooted device that I want to use a custom ROM on, and there are so many choices it makes choosing a ROM very difficult.
And it is all a matter of preference, depending what included features (included Gapps, default launcher, notification options, etc) or what base it is built from (CM10, AOSP, AOKP, etc) everyone has their own preference.
I created this public spreadsheet, but I thought it may be useful for others, and allow others to possibly to keep track of what features are included out-of-the-box on different custom ROMs. It has really taken off since I originally created it.
http://goo.gl/U8a0E
Hopefully this can help others like me who want to quickly know what features they will or won't have with different custom ROMs.
I considered trying to do a forum post on this, but obviously I would have to keep up with updates myself on Post #1 like most stickied reference posts, that's why I thought a public Google Spreadsheet would be more helpful as anyone can update it.
Overall, a lot of this will probably be moot once a stable CM10 is released, but we never really know how long that can take. And we all know there will still be customizations made to it, one I can think of specifically is Paranoid Android.
Thanks everyone who makes updates to the sheet. I would also like to throw out a HUGE thank you to the custom ROM makers giving us stable ROMs that meet our individual needs.
And, as the Google Doc can be viewed by ANYONE, must get permission on google account to edit.
My personal "Must Haves":
- T9 Dialer (avoid having to install separate dialer app)
- Customizable Notification drop down for Additional Toggles (this has replaced the need for Widgetsoid2 since I can have the Flashlight and Wifi AP here.)
- Reboot and Reboot to Recovery in Power Menu (Mostly Reboot as a minimum as I sometimes forget to turn it back on if I Poweroff)
- Battery Percentage in Status Bar (The logo itself is no where near specific enough for my needs, and I now prefer the circle style)
NOVEMBER 24, 2012 UPDATE: Personally I've switched over to Paranoid Android 2.99.3 (beta 3), it doesn't have my personal must haves yet, but I'm sure it will, currently I'd rather have 4.2 and lose a few features, than be running 4.1.2, it is one of the first roms with customizations to be released on AOSP 4.2, so until it is 3.x it could have some bugs.

This is nice. I have bought gnex seven days ago and tried every JB ROM so far.
Also I noticed that paranoid, like you said ( the only ROM that I am using as a daily driver ) is not on this list.
You really should try his alpha 1.9.1 with included kernel. Well now all kernels work on this ROM. But I think that gnex is the beast already and doesnt need any Custom kernels.
Hey I like Franco kernel and I purchased his app and I am playing a lot with it, but as long as I need decent battery life I will use stock kernel. On that ROM I had only 2% of battery dropped in amazing 6 night hours. I just couldnt believe my eyes.

Thanks, I assume you added Soft and Chewy.
I'm downloading the newest CM10 and JellyBro to load onto my Nexus quick, hopefully I will get those two filled in completely, then at least I will know where my baseline is for my own personal comparison.
A few people have messed it up a bit and I'm sure some changes got lost, but if I don't leave it wide open, I know a lot of people won't make changes.
So, after all of that, and the spreadsheet getting updated by users pretty nicely, it looks like there is a functional enough CM10 (from the +Google page) v1.8 that is stable enough for me to start using as a daily driver for at least a few days.
I'll be using Gapps-b as I need Picasa sync to be working.

You could leave the public version as is, but add a "revised" version (editable only by you) that weeds out any egregious and obvious inaccuracies.
Oops misread.

So, overall, I definitely accomplished what I wanted to do with the Google Doc, everyone has been awesome with their updates to it.
But, for myself, the Doc is basically useless as soon as I found CM10 v1.8 on the +Google page, which is basically a very stable nightly (although it isn't), it is exactly what I wanted....
It's very stable, gives me all the features I have as my "Bare Minimum"
- Toggles in notification screen
- Battery Percentage in Status bar
- Reboot options in shutdown menu
I ended up in the exact same state after trying numerous custom roms on my HTC Desire and Motorola Atrix previously, always just ending up with CyanogenMod7.
And I happened to just fall onto the +Google post with v1.8 while compiling the Google Doc. Was about to download 1.3 then 1.8 was posted and I'm LOVING it.
And as long as I stick to CM10, I shouldn't have to wipe my data, I'm tired of doing all my Titanium Restores (as I don't have the paid version).
Again, thanks everyone for updating the Google Doc, and as I've made it public, anyone should be able to update it and keep it updated for other people out there that want to use custom roms. And if anyone ever needs to revert anything that really breaks it, all you have to do is log in with your google account.
I really hope it helps some people find the ROM they want to use for their specific needs. And it would be nice to see more of these for different devices, especially for devices not officially supported by CyanogenMod. I may have to get one started for my Motorola Atrix 4G.

Speaking of that, does anyone know what document viewer the stock Nexus uses, and if there is an Play App, or APK I can install on CM10 that is the same.
I have Documents to Go, but I'm wondering what the Stock nexus one is.
I've added this to the spreadsheet as CM10 not having one, so if we know which app the Stock has I can put that on the spreadsheet.
Thanks.
So as you might be able to tell from the title, I am a S4 user, which currently uses the Google Edition 4.4.2 with GEL.
I have had my N72013 (WiFi) for quite some time now, and never done anything with it (in the modding sense). It is not rooted, no custom ROMS or custom Kernels.
So now, after perfecting my S4,I wish to perfect the N7!
So my questions are;
What is the best 4.4.2 ROM for the N7 (your opinion)
Would it be possible to get the GEL (Google Experience Launcher) on the ROM? I like that way more than stock/Nova
What is the best Kernel, for battery efficiency?
I have a kernel option on my S4 to 'Fast Charge' the phone, is that an option on one of the N7 Kernels?
Thats all I can think of! Thanks for your help.

hello,
after going through some kernel descriptions, i have found, each of them have some up and down sides too. right now I am using temasek cm12.1 unofficial build v15, using the default kernel.
I have looked the following kernels - ElementalX, Glitch and Vindicator.
my device is 32GB razor-flo (wifi-only),
can anyone suggest me the best all around kernel for the device on the given rom?

These threads and questions are pointless. Anyone that's been around the forums for awhile will dismiss a "best ROM/kernel?" Thread as one posted by an OP that is lazy to try for themselves, or had extremely limited knowledge and wants to avoid time spent reading or trying for themselves.
Don't take this the wrong way, just want to let you know how others will likely view and respond, or why they would ignore.
Really, all three you mentioned are great kernels, but their individual performance on your device will vary based on the settings you use on the kernel, ROM settings, installed apps, running processes, etc. Too many variables for anyone to offer you an absolute or honest answer...
Sorry for being too novice in question, but I have never tried flashing modded kernel. But my actual intension was to find out what most user prefer while choosing custom performance/mod kernel.

Like you said, there's pros and cons to all of them, but all three you mentioned can run effectively and efficiently on Flo, it's a matter of tailoring your usage and needs to your kernel settings. I prefer elemental x myself, because I believe it's the most stable, I like the aroma installer, and i like how good the paid elemental x app is at running the kernel. That's just my opinion. I've used vindicator and glitch quite a bit, they're great too, but have different strong suits than X.
