[Q] SD Card Class / Frequent Corruption and Zoe Problem - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
One of the biggest frustrations for me with my new HTC M8 has been SD cards.
All of my usual cards I use in various devices have all been too slow for Zoe so I invested in a Class 10 32GB. Get the same warning 'To enjoy a better Zoe experience, please use a higher class SD card' or a message very similar.
I've also had a few times when my SD card has become corrupt at various times.
Am I alone in experiencing these problems?

It may be the way the card is formatted.
I always reformat my card FAT32 before putting it into a new device. Once I put it in the new device, I then have the phone reformat it also... then move everything on to the card...

Hi,
I did all the steps you mentioned. Anybody recommend a fast card that dosent bring up the zoe pop up ?
Oh' Thanks for all your help.

I have the same problem with mine, it half corrupted itself today after i opened the camera app, the camera froze and the phone unmounted the sd card, i removed it and put it back in numerous times and it wouldn't read, had to put it into a friends Z1 to get the card back working, but now all the photos are deleted, luckily google backs them up automatically.
How could HTC mess up such an important feature on a flagship phone.

Mine does not have this pop up.
I am using a Sony Micro SD HC with a 10 in a circle (Class ten is that?), i1, 40mb/s, model SR-32UY
I bought it from tesco, 32gb, for about 20 I think, in the UK.
Zoe's record perfectly.
I formatted the card in my phone on Venom Rom.

I asked the HTC support if the Wildfire supports class 10 cards and they said "Yes".
So I bought a 16 GB class 10 microSD card for my Wildfire and it works perfectly:
http://www.amazon.com/AUSDH16GCL10-...ty-microSDHC/dp/B004FPQJGK/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_2
I am still working with 2 2gb cards, one for films. But soon I buy a 16gb one. aty least a class 6
I have an 8 gb kingston card, but I get the "SD card unmounted" message, and then even on PC, I have trouble reading it. After a format it`s ok for another week or so. I need to stop being cheap and buy a new one.

Note 2 killed my Sandisk Micro sd HC card?

First, sorry for my bad english. i hope you will understand my problem.
I am using a genunie sandisk 32gb micro sdhc card. used it with my old xperia t too...
Started using it with my Note 2 since 2 months. But i got an error yesterday, that my card is removed because format is not ok. i did nothing with the card or not removed from my phone. My phone was also turned on since 4 days. And today asked me for formatting micro sd card. i had no time to check it on my computer so i choosed format it. Note 2 has formatted it. After that it didnt see my card.
In the storage menu it shows no ext.card. i tried to format my micro sd card on windows and on macbook but they dont see my card.
I lost my photos and some files... i dont care about them now, i just want to format my card but i think its dead now...
Anyone has experience? What shall i do now?
Now i see this again, choosing format but nothing happens...

Do you see it listed in Disk Management in Windows? It could be that it is not being mounted as a drive, but seen as a RAW partition by the system, in which case you can format it from Disk Management and start using it again. Don't look for the card under Volumes, but where disks are listed, in which section you'll see Disk 0, Disk 1 and so on. Good luck
Try to format your card using SD Formatter https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/
Thanks for your replies. I will try it when i arrive to home from my work.

I had a 64GB SanDisk card. I bought it in December. Last week, somehow, it became write protected! I could not format it, either in the phone or Windows and could not write any data to it.
I phoned SanDisk and they said they would replace it. I managed to copy the data off it. I told them I couldn't send the card back to them, as I couldn't delete the data. They just asked me to photograph the card before and after I cut it in half. Now they are sending me a new card.
However, as there seem to be many problems with SanDisk cards, I will never use one again. I bought a Samsung 64GB instead.
sent from somewhere
Don't think its the phone, rather the SD card itself.
after getting a Samsung MicroSD card, there are no further problems.
the Sandisk card even has problem being detected by a windows 7 machine
Sandisk and Lexar are both garbage! They have the worst quality control ever. I don't even understand how they are so popular.
I have mailed to Sandisk support, they wanted photos of card with serial number and where i bought it.
than they want me to break my card and send again photos of broken card. Now, they will send me new card...
Had the problem myself with a 32 gb sandisk class 10. The phone said the card was damaged. I used the card adapter that came with the card and when inserted in my pc card reader, surprise: it worked like nothing happened! Saved data, format it with sdformater and i use it now.
I mention a kingston card adapter didn't do the job. It kept saying the card was not formatted.

Yes SD Formatter is kind a low level formatter. If flash storage is not physically damaged, SD Formatter solves most of the problems
defo not the phone but the card itself. Has happened to me more then once. Some card's are just ****
well from personal experience. I have to say first hand, i honestly think its the phone. the same thing happened to me. i have the att note 2 and a centon 32gb class4 card and out of nowhere, i get a message that my card was removed unexpectedly and now my card doesn't work on ANY DEVICE. I've tried multiple card readers, different software, different computers, even tried a mac, took my memory card to s specialist. NO DEVICE recognizes anything even connected. now i thought, ok maybe a faulty card but my wife with same phone and a sandisk 32gb class 10, SAME THING happened. my friend with a Kingston 32 gb and a sprint note 2, his memory card died as well. THREE different brands, and same type of phone. too much of a coincidence, could be it really cant handle 32gb. now im using i think 8 and its working fine for now.

Happened the same yesterday. Trascend class 4 32Gb SDHC. Completely dead.
Checked with a macbook, but the card isn't detected anymore.
In my opinion, the NoteII may haves some problem with sd card (maybe the voltage regulators aren't correctly programmed, or something similar).
But frankly, I do not have any proof to support this, just a sensation.
Cheers

I had the same thing happen to me. Put the card on a windows machine, and run
chkdsk /f
this makes the disk readable again. At least, it did for me. One problem was that even though the disk was readable, it seems some
files had errors, so the media scanner ran forever and used up lots of battery when the fixed card was used. I ended up not using that card any
more.
Same problem with me... 32gb microsd hc class 10 sandisk... In sn2 n7100 it says blank card or unsupported filesystem... In windows 7 laptop... It is not detected.... Chkdsk does not work in cmd prompt as the card is not detected... Unable to do anything with the card as it is not detected... Cannot format, cannot see in disk manager. Card is also not read in other phones.
PLEASE help as it had a lot of information and i have NO money to buy a new card.

[Q] New SD Card

I'm thinking of getting a larger SD card. Can I just transfer all my data to that card install it into my phone and work or do I have to partition the card? How much do I need to partition the card if I have to partition it. I have a 32Gb now and thinking of getting a 64.
Thanks

No need to partition it - just copy your data over and pop it in your phone. I use a 128GB card in mine.

What's the make of your SD card? I just bought a 128GB card from ADATA and it's slow as hell! When after recording video, it takes a good 10 seconds to process and deleting pics takes a good 5 to 8 seconds. What are your SD card speeds because I'm returning this card and getting one from another OEM. I was trying to save a few buck but it's not worth it, the SD card is too slow for my liking.

It is about 35MB/s read and 18MB/s write based upon A1 SD Bench. I don't have any lag issues with it with video & picture recording and viewing.

[Q] [Micro SD] Anyone having issues mounting a Lexar 32gb?

Hi guys,
I doubt I'm the only one here.
I got my G4 (h812 LMY47D)and im ecstatic about using my micro sd slot (S6 was the main deal breaker paying top dollars for more storage) but now I'm running into issues with my Class 10 micros sd from Lexar, This darn software does not want to mount the thing (tried several format including a full 40 minute format @ fat 32 default allocation).
The G4 detects an SD card but won't mount it. This thing works flawlessly on my old S3 so it has to be software related as using a cheap Kingston 1gb class 4 works fine.
Anyone else running into issues with their sd card?
Thanks for sharing any info or tips.

FIX
Just taught of leaving what got me to sort this out after playing around... Fun times :good:
After tinkering around with another SD card, the LG device formatted it to FAT16.
I've formatted the sd card using http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html under FAT/Primary
It created a 4gb partition and left it the remaining untouch
Popped the SD on the G4 and it finally mounted the partition
Performed an erase via the phone 2x to make sure and the entire 32gb is now accessible.
Hope that helps others having mounting issues.

I have facing same problems with my 64 GB sandisk sd card on new LG G4
can you explain the procedure to make it work
I've been using an AData 128GB for the last month or so with no problems. I turned the phone on yesterday morning and for whatever reason it went straight to my home screen but locked up and took half a minute or so to unlock and then goes to the lack screen, then I also got a SD Card inserted notification, I figured nothing of it and ignored it. The micro sd runs fine on other devices (formatted as ex-fat) but it causes that issue on startup i mentioned above as long as it's in the phone and it also refuses to mount.
I'm using the SanDisk SDSDQUAN-200G-A4A 200GB ULTRA MICROSDXC UHS-I since 2.5 months ago formatted in exfat with 128k clusters which was what it was out of the package and it works fine.

SanDisk is the only one with something larger than 128GB at this point in time and notice it's 200GB instead of 256GB as size usually doubles in capacity, heard the 56GB was used for something else or maybe not usable. I have a new 200GB card in there now. There is a 512GB card coming soon from Microdia as well.

HTC 10: A devourer of SD cards?

Hi!
Today my SD card died and took some pictures with it to the grave, fortunately nothing very important. It may not have been the most expensive card, but it was a fast one and I used it as internal storage. It didn't show any signs of deterioration before it died. I tried to read the card with my PC and two tablets but none of my devices is able to even see the card.
Before buying a new SD card I want to ask a few things:
Does the HTC 10 have more problems with SD cards than other phones in your opinion?
Should I use my new card as internal storage again or do you recommend to use it as external storage?
Is it worthwhile to buy an expensive card? I laid my eyes on this one: SDSQXCG-064G-GN6MA (SanDisk Extreme PRO microSDXC Memory Card Plus SD Adapter up to 100 MB/s, Class 10, U3, V30, A1 - 64 GB). It costs about 50€.
I hope that you want to share your thoughts with me.
Regards,
Benjamin
If the card was inexpensive and fast, I would think that the compromise made was on build quality/reliability. Using the card as internal storage will wear on the sdcard more than using it as external storage (more reads/writes, more heat) because it will store apps and app data on the sd card.
I don't think the HTC 10 has a problem with sd cards, I haven't heard this issue come up before.
If you have enough space for apps on the internal storage, I would recommend keeping the sd card as external storage.
However, if you still need to use a card as internal storage, you definitely want to get a more expensive card.
Sandisk extreme pro is a good choice because it's made for use with devices like GoPros that do constant writing for extended periods of time, meaning that they can handle the heat that builds up when constantly writing to the sd card.
Sometimes it could really just be pure chance, maybe you got a bad card that died early, but I definitely think it would have lasted longer as external storage.
I'd be interested to know if anyone else has had a similar problem with any phone with an sd card as internal storage.
The thing is - current sd card technology is not suitable for adoptable storage. Multiple read write proceses are killing memory cards. So, until someone makes a card that can take the beating of multiple read write proceses, just use your card as it's ment to be used - as a removable storage and you'll be just fine [emoji6]
Thank you both for your well formulated and competent response.
I've taken all these points into consideration when I chose to use my first SD card as internal storage. I really would like to know if a high quality card could last the expected lifetime of my HTC 10 when using it as internal storage. I wanted to avoid the limitations Google imposed on write access to the external card but when I saw the limitations of the internal storage solution I was unsure if it was a good decision.
It's good to hear that you do not have the experience that the HTC 10 has a problem with SD cards. With that information in mind I can buy an expensive SD card with good conscience.

Let's hope that more users are going to share their opinion with us.
I've just sent back my second SanDisk Extreme PRO card in 18 months. The first one stopped working after just 4 months in the HTC 10, the second one a few weeks ago. The circumstances were identical, I wrote larger amounts of data in a short time and the phone started saying that the card has to be formatted. I could use a reader connected to my laptop to get most of my data back, but the phone insisted on a format. I'm not sure if it was the SanDisk cards or the phone, either way, I ordered a Samsung card this time. Luckily amazon.de is extremely customer friendly and just gave me my money back in both cases.
I always use transcend, I've had a 128gb external SD card in since may 2016, all camera shots goto external card, all flashing and backups goto external card. Never had a problem, touch wood ?
Guys, are any of you using Spotify? I have consistently had microSD cards die after downloading songs for offline use i.e. two phones and three different microSD cards.
I use a Samsung evo card as removable storage since January, never had any problems with it. They are a bit more expensive, but it is worth it in my opinion. I use it mainly for Spotify and Netflix downloads as well as pictures (wallpapers) and ringtones... Don't use a rather inexpensive card as adoptable storage, since they are too slow. Or even expensive cards for that matter In a few years, sd cards will be fast enough, but not today. Also, I fail to see a practical use for using the card as adoptable storage as of right now since 32 gb are plenty of space for apps

I'm going to buy a card produced by a reputable company this time, for sure. But I thought that cards with the A1 specification (Application performance class] would be fast enough for use as adopted storage. But you are right, 32 Gb is a lot of space for apps.

Actually, if Spotify recognises your sd card as removable storage, it even is the default setting

I've used Samsung evo and Sandisk Ultra Extreme and the both failed a short time after downloading Spotify songs!
I've had a Transcend 64GB card fail after a few months. It was inserted as external storage and I was able to recover its contents on a PC. I was able to put it back in the phone without formatting it, just tried a few times until eventually it worked.
It happened when it was very hot outside, not sure if this is related or not. I wonder how many failed cards are failing during hot weather, during heavy phone use, or in hot climate areas.
I've switched to a Samsung 128GB evo plus now, u3 speed, so far so good. Fingers crossed. Judging by this thread though, it does seem that this phone kind of eats through SD cards.

This is precisely what I wanted to know in this thread. Before buying my first card for the HTC 10 I read a number of threads that suggested this phone specifically has problems with cards bigger than 64 GB. But the reaction to my thread doesn't seem to be so hysterical to me.
I been using a Toshiba Exceria M302 128GB as external storage since the phone first launched and it hasn't failed on me yet, touchwood. Although I only been using up to around 50GB usage, I have re-download my Spotify collection a couple times.
The SD card in my HTC 10 is going on 15 months old, and it's still ticking. I have never used it as adaptive storage. It just stores photos taken on the camera (which are backed up to Google Photos). Some games offer to save data onto the SD card, so I do that as well. It's a Samsung 64GB PRO (class 10).
Not sure if the UHS-1/3 cards will fare better.
