Hi!
Today my SD card died and took some pictures with it to the grave, fortunately nothing very important. It may not have been the most expensive card, but it was a fast one and I used it as internal storage. It didn't show any signs of deterioration before it died. I tried to read the card with my PC and two tablets but none of my devices is able to even see the card.
Before buying a new SD card I want to ask a few things:
Does the HTC 10 have more problems with SD cards than other phones in your opinion?
Should I use my new card as internal storage again or do you recommend to use it as external storage?
Is it worthwhile to buy an expensive card? I laid my eyes on this one: SDSQXCG-064G-GN6MA (SanDisk Extreme PRO microSDXC Memory Card Plus SD Adapter up to 100 MB/s, Class 10, U3, V30, A1 - 64 GB). It costs about 50€.

If the card was inexpensive and fast, I would think that the compromise made was on build quality/reliability. Using the card as internal storage will wear on the sdcard more than using it as external storage (more reads/writes, more heat) because it will store apps and app data on the sd card.
I don't think the HTC 10 has a problem with sd cards, I haven't heard this issue come up before.
If you have enough space for apps on the internal storage, I would recommend keeping the sd card as external storage.
However, if you still need to use a card as internal storage, you definitely want to get a more expensive card.
Sandisk extreme pro is a good choice because it's made for use with devices like GoPros that do constant writing for extended periods of time, meaning that they can handle the heat that builds up when constantly writing to the sd card.
Sometimes it could really just be pure chance, maybe you got a bad card that died early, but I definitely think it would have lasted longer as external storage.
I'd be interested to know if anyone else has had a similar problem with any phone with an sd card as internal storage.
The thing is - current sd card technology is not suitable for adoptable storage. Multiple read write proceses are killing memory cards. So, until someone makes a card that can take the beating of multiple read write proceses, just use your card as it's ment to be used - as a removable storage and you'll be just fine [emoji6]

I've taken all these points into consideration when I chose to use my first SD card as internal storage. I really would like to know if a high quality card could last the expected lifetime of my HTC 10 when using it as internal storage. I wanted to avoid the limitations Google imposed on write access to the external card but when I saw the limitations of the internal storage solution I was unsure if it was a good decision.
It's good to hear that you do not have the experience that the HTC 10 has a problem with SD cards. With that information in mind I can buy an expensive SD card with good conscience.

Let's hope that more users are going to share their opinion with us.
I've just sent back my second SanDisk Extreme PRO card in 18 months. The first one stopped working after just 4 months in the HTC 10, the second one a few weeks ago. The circumstances were identical, I wrote larger amounts of data in a short time and the phone started saying that the card has to be formatted. I could use a reader connected to my laptop to get most of my data back, but the phone insisted on a format. I'm not sure if it was the SanDisk cards or the phone, either way, I ordered a Samsung card this time. Luckily amazon.de is extremely customer friendly and just gave me my money back in both cases.
I always use transcend, I've had a 128gb external SD card in since may 2016, all camera shots goto external card, all flashing and backups goto external card. Never had a problem, touch wood ?
Guys, are any of you using Spotify? I have consistently had microSD cards die after downloading songs for offline use i.e. two phones and three different microSD cards.
I use a Samsung evo card as removable storage since January, never had any problems with it. They are a bit more expensive, but it is worth it in my opinion. I use it mainly for Spotify and Netflix downloads as well as pictures (wallpapers) and ringtones... Don't use a rather inexpensive card as adoptable storage, since they are too slow. Or even expensive cards for that matter In a few years, sd cards will be fast enough, but not today. Also, I fail to see a practical use for using the card as adoptable storage as of right now since 32 gb are plenty of space for apps

I did not know that it is possible to tell the Spotify app to use external storage. Will try when I get my new card.

I'm going to buy a card produced by a reputable company this time, for sure. But I thought that cards with the A1 specification (Application performance class] would be fast enough for use as adopted storage. But you are right, 32 Gb is a lot of space for apps.

I've used Samsung evo and Sandisk Ultra Extreme and the both failed a short time after downloading Spotify songs!
I've had a Transcend 64GB card fail after a few months. It was inserted as external storage and I was able to recover its contents on a PC. I was able to put it back in the phone without formatting it, just tried a few times until eventually it worked.
It happened when it was very hot outside, not sure if this is related or not. I wonder how many failed cards are failing during hot weather, during heavy phone use, or in hot climate areas.
I've switched to a Samsung 128GB evo plus now, u3 speed, so far so good. Fingers crossed. Judging by this thread though, it does seem that this phone kind of eats through SD cards.

This is precisely what I wanted to know in this thread. Before buying my first card for the HTC 10 I read a number of threads that suggested this phone specifically has problems with cards bigger than 64 GB. But the reaction to my thread doesn't seem to be so hysterical to me.
I been using a Toshiba Exceria M302 128GB as external storage since the phone first launched and it hasn't failed on me yet, touchwood. Although I only been using up to around 50GB usage, I have re-download my Spotify collection a couple times.
The SD card in my HTC 10 is going on 15 months old, and it's still ticking. I have never used it as adaptive storage. It just stores photos taken on the camera (which are backed up to Google Photos). Some games offer to save data onto the SD card, so I do that as well. It's a Samsung 64GB PRO (class 10).
Not sure if the UHS-1/3 cards will fare better.

Seems the HD7 uses a Class 2 SDHC card for its internal memory, which is replaceable. I'm surprised it uses such a slow card.
I suspect replacing the card invalidates the warranty though as you need to unscrew the phone and break a seal to get at the slot. Nevertheless you'd end up with a lot more storage, and even 32GB cards are available at class 4 so would be a fair bit faster too.
I remain hopeful that the Venue Pro has gone for the more expensive route of having its 8GB on internal flash chips, leaving the SD card socket free for that nice beefy 32GB card I'm going to put there.
It is odd how MS's own site said they used advanced microSD cards and thus they would be difficult to replace or something. Then we see it's just a class 2. SanDisks are typically a little faster at lower classes than the rest, though.

yes it would work if samsung went the route of adding a sd card instead of flash memory as the internal memory. someone would have to open it and see.
I guess the only folks who could figure this out unti after Nov. 8 are the folks with an Omnia 7. Seems to be pretty similar phone.
I have an unlocked Rogers Samsung Captivate Glide (i927R) running gingerbread (since Kies doesn't want to update it to ICS, and I haven't gotten around to rooting it), and it seems to be eating through SD cards. I had a 32gb micro SD card in there, but the phone decided to stop reading it after about a month and a half. Nothing else can read the card either; not my computer, not another phone, not even my camera can read the card. This is the second 32gb card it's happened to, and I'm starting to think that maybe it's my phone. When I have the card in the phone, it simply says "Unavailable" when I check under storage, although the phone can still read other SD cards.
Does anyone else have problems with this phone (i927R) killing SD cards? Am I simply just overloading the SD card, or is there some possibility that the phone is burning them out? Should I go for a 16gb card and see if it doesn't burn out, since smaller cards seem less likely to burn out?
Any help is appreciated.

What kind of cards did you use ? I had 2 corsair thumb drives go bad on me in mere weeks.. might be crap media .. I've used kingston and patriot no issues

The last one that burned out was a Transcend, and I don't remember what the first one was. but I don't think it was a particularly high quality brand. I will be sure to get a better quality card next time.
Do you think downsizing to a 16gb card would reduce the chances of a burnout?

It's a crapshoot man ... I've had kingstons bad out of the box at a couple of sizes, the flash drives I had die were 16gb Corsair USB3's and rated with high speed..
just make sure you get a class 10 and read up on some reviews ... Newegg is really great for it, lookup the brand, price etc. and then to buy it at a local store and have them price match...
I should really get in the habit of backing up all the information on my phone more than once i run out of space

I'm looking to get a 64gb card for the phone to store music and whatever else can be put there (I realize apps can't go on the SD). I've seen class 10 cards and other slower classes for sale online. Does the speed of the card make that much of a difference for the uses that we need? I'm assuming that any class of card would be sufficient for music, but then again maybe I'm wrong. Someone please educate me!!!
I realize that with a digital camera, you want a faster card to quickly store the image you just took, so you can get on to snapping the next picture, but with our phones do we need the faster storage that class 10 provides? How much does it matter?
Also, I understand there are apps that swap the built in memory location for the Micro SD location (sorry, I'm an Android newbie and I'm just learning), so that I could have 64gb of "built-in" storage for apps (minus the OS), and 23gb for "external storage", then would the speed class of the card then come into play much? How fast is the built in memory compared to a class 10 SD card?
the thing i can say is class 10 helps a lot for "scanning media" process which comes :

Built in memory will typically be faster than even a Class 10 card. The other day I picked up a 64GB MicroSD card from Best Buy (half price at $50) and put a ton of ripped movies into it so I can show of that 5.5" screen. It scanned the 50GB of files in a few seconds and I haven't noticed any stuttering, even as I scroll through the videos.
All of the 64GB MicroSD cards I have seen have been Class 10 anyway, so don't worry if you pick up a 64GB. This is the one I purchased (same price as Best Buy):

MicroSD is anything under 4gb, 4-32= SDHC above 32gb = SDXC. The OGP can accept any of them (up to 64gb).

Anyone has problem with the microSD card being ejected when writing on it ? I have that when I take a video or multiple photo in line, even when I run a backup with Titanium and the phone is just on a table, without moving it.

I use it for months on my macbook with a nifty drive without problem.
I've had this happen myself a few times. Then my SD card got mostly corrupted, but it wasn't new, I had a 64GB Kingston Class 10 SD Card that I've abused and over used for the last few years coming from my Epic Touch 4G (Galaxy S2), Galaxy S3, and now LG G3.
My best advice:
ALWAYS backup your SD card every three months onto a computer and external hard drive, and replace your external hard drive and SD every three years if you're a heavy user (just to be safe).
I installed a newer 32GB Sandisk Class 10 (until I replace my 64GB card some day) and I have not once had it "eject" at all since. So that's probably heads up that your card is failing. Whatever you do, don't format it and keep using it, it's on it's way out from the sounds of it. The thick bars/lines in the photos are a good warning. Buy a new one as soon as you can, for now try to stick to internal storage.

From my understanding there aren't any cards at the moment quick enough to serve the role efficiently. Just use it as an external storage until faster cards become available.

I have a 128gb Samsung EVO micro sd, class 10, but it's 48mb/s and I got the same message you did, saying the card isn't fast enough and that the overall apps and system speeds could be slower.
I thought class 10 micro sd's were among the fastest and the Moto Z Play wouldn't have any trouble using it as an extension of it's internal storage, but as a matter of fact, there are indeed faster micro sds. After researching a little bit, I found Samsung EVOs with 80mb/s transfer speeds (the 48mb/s are colored orange, as the 80mb/s are little green ones):
I still haven't bought one, but I browsed through some forums and videos and people with the same problem said 80mb/s seems to do the trick and they didn't get any message complaining about the micro sd speed.
f you want even faster micro sds, try the Sandisk Extreme, with speeds up to 90mb/s:

While running the adopted 50 MB card AFT fails on most copy operations.
I am afraid ? that 2 times faster may not be enough for the already challenged ATF, buggy as it is already.

Using this card with no issues. Formatted as internal storage. SanDisk Extreme 128GB microSDXC UHS-I Card with Adapter (SDSQXVF-128G-GN6MA). Got it at Amazon for 60 bucks. It is quite speedy as far as I can tell.

Do you play large music files (flac or dsf) ?
I do and getting them on such a card is via my Mac using Android File Transfer or from a SATA drive using OTG. On KK AFT did not work on large transfers. It has not been updated in many years. The OTG / drive method should be reliable but not with my 50 mb, slow card.
To boot, on the negative side of using adopted cards, you cannot pull the card in the case of a data wipe.
I will be abandoning this method.

In my use case, adaptable storage doesn't make much sense on devices with 32gb or more of internal storage. Unless you really need that much space for app installs, the limitations outweigh the benefits. My typical app load is around 8 to 10gb, so I have somewhere around another 10 available on the MZP, as long as I pull all my media into an external card. This way I know all my apps are using fast internal storage, and I don't have to wonder if a widget is available or not. And I can pull the card and use it in a PC or other device.
Now my Moto E 2 (with 8gb onboard) is a different story. But I use a hybrid card in that - 20gb as adopted and the other 40 as external. May consider this as an option when I get around to getting a card for the MZP
I took a 32gb card and combined it. It warned me too. After reading up on the function, Android evaluates what to put where. Having the card separate made it less useful only good for photos and video really. This way app data can be buffered there. Things like cloud services buffer files internally. Netflix now uses SD but that was an issue too.
Bought a new micro SD for the Moto Z Play and it works perfectly with no warnings about it's speed being slow!
It's a Samsung PRO 64 GB microSDXC Card, with 90 MB/s reading speed and 80 MB/s writing speed.
As you insert the card and format it to be part of the phone's internal storage, the system doesn't complain about the card being too slow or that it'll affect the overall app and system speed.
It's perfectly reliable for installing apps outside the device storage and keep the desired speed and all that good stuff.

It's a microSD. For these kind of cards it's quite usual that there is some percentage that fail after some time. Some cards only last for months, other years. It seems to be independent of manufacturer.
My personal advice: Whatever you store on a micro SD card, have a backup. I'd rather not use it for internal storage if it's not necessary to do so. It's slower than internal memory anyway. This is a personal opinion, you'll have or see different opinions for sure.

I agree but for me having a Mac I never want to use ATF it is buggy.
So I am left to getting large music files from an external drive over OTG.
It is so much more reliable to drop the file right to the SD and move the card to the phone.
If the adopted card fails , you need a data wipe or an update screws it up, you have a bad phone day!

I'm allowing the access via Windows filesharing (still OSX 10.6.8), and then access some drive on the computer using LAN plugin of Total Commander for Android. Works like a charm! It is a bit slower, but very convenient not having the need to put card or, put card in etc.

I'm quite sure that file sharing via smb: is available on nearly all versions of Windows and OSX.
You may start Windows file sharing in network settings of OSX. Then you can give access to some drive in Finder.
If you google a bit, you will find help I guess.

Buy? Total Commander is free of cost, including all necessary plugins. For Windows file sharing (smb) you need the TC LAN plugin.
Edit: By "a bit slower" I meant because it usually is being used via WLAN in your intranet
Just wanted to post back here - finally got around to picking up an sd card for the MZP. Went with Samsung evo 128gb, $40 on Amazon. Since it's got plenty of space, I decided to go the same route that I did with the moto e, and do hybrid storage. Formatted 25% adopted and 75% external. Gives me an additional 30gb internal space and 90gb external storage.
Device sees the storage space fine. A couple apps I've messed with so far (Netflix and Google play music) can save to external fine, but don't recognize the additional available space in "internal", or at last don't report it as available.
I don't plan to move any apps that I use frequently or anything that I use widgets from to adopted, as the advertised max read speed is only 20mb/s. Haven't actually tested yet. But I did move a couple low use apps over. Reported storage space on both internal and adopted updated correctly (an issue I've had in the past).
So far, so good.
