Sd card upgrade problem

So I recently ordered a 16 GB micro sd card off Amazon since I've been using my MT4G for music and leaving my ipod at home, and wanted to bump up my capacity. Anyway, it's a Patriot Class 4 card, and I'm having some trouble. I inserted it into the phone, and selected 'format sd card' from settings, did it, but when I mounted sd card via usb to transfer files, it was going SO SLOW. Like, 50 minutes to transfer 200 MB or so. So...my question is, is there something I'm supposed to have done and didn't do? Or is it a bad card, or what? Because my 8 GB stock card was only class 4, and was MUCH faster.

Try using windows to format it using the default allocation size. I have seen some talk in the "32gig class 10" thread that doing this really sped up the transfer speeds of the cards over what you get when letting the phone format it.

Thanks for the help. I'm really unsure about what to do, been searching and can't really figure out if the card is bad or if I haven't formatted it correctly. Unfortunately, I'm on a macbook, so don't use Windows. Usually, there is a mac equivalent for anything windows can do, so I'll see what my options are. It's just driving me crazy, because it'll take DAYS to transfer all my music lol. Not sure why no one else has jumped in to help me out. Either no one knows anything about it, or it's such an obvious answer that I'm embarrassing myself. Either way, I'd love to hear which it is so I know how f-ed I am.

try doing a full format instead of a quick format with windows.

I ordered that card last week and had the same issue you had. Max of like 2mbs transfer whether I mounted it through the MyTouch 4G USB, Included adapter or my USB card reader. I tried the panasonic formatting tool and half the time it would kill my card reader or just fail. Messed with it for like 4 days and couldn't find anything that helped. Must be a incompatibility, It was returned and I just received a Transcend 16gb Class 4. Transfer average 4-6mb depending if it's a large file or tons of smaller files.

I've done alot of testing for sd cards and android because i had similar issues with my patriot SD card and I've found that a 32K cluster sizes gives great speeds. Only time you really need smaller is if u are using a actual hard disk or if your average file size are around 3-10 Kb but with mp3 and most other files being around 3-10Mb you lose alot of and speed as a result of having smaller clusters.
Now say u use maverick maps and have cached over several million tiles all of which are 1kb each then use a smaller cluster size to save space or those millions of 1k tiles could fill a entire 8 gig card as opposed to actual size of 700Mb but it will take a horrendously long time to transfer to those card. so its a trade off.
So bottom line use a 32k allocation table. It will give you good optimization of space and speed.

I have also found that formatting the sd card with the phone rather than with my mac also causes slow transfer rates so I format all my sd cards on my mac (or pc) before putting them in my phone. Transfer rates are much quicker that way.

I have Kingston 16gb class 10 and I would only average 1-2mb/s when copying files over.
I reformatted in via Windows to a few different cluster sizes and did some testing with my phone.
For my usage I went with a 64k cluster size. My copy speeds to the card average 13mb/s. I don't really store small files on the card so I'm not worried about excessive space use right now.

[Q] How many people wanted removable storage on a Galaxy Nexus?

Like the title says, I'm curious to see how many people actually wanted this function. I was a bit disappointed when I heard about the lack of removable memory, but I lust after this phone. I do have a 16GB card that's near capacity. I haven't cleaned it out in a while, so I'll do that first. Hopefully 16GB will be enough for me. But I digress, this isn't a rant about how the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have removable memory. This thread is more about seeing the percentage of people who did want this function.

I did want it, just like I wanted it on the NS. But I understand that I don't NEED removable storage and will be buying the GN the first chance I get. And given the choice, I'll probably go with a 16GB version, because I still have about 4GB of free space on my NS.

I really wanted an sdcard slot on it. I will have to import the phone as the 32GB versions as there seems to be no current plans to sell that version in Sweden according to Samsung themselves. 32GB is minimum for me. I had hoped to be able to get a 32 GB version and then plug in my 32 GB microsd for even more storage.

Wanted it, but mostly because i got a 32GB MicroSD card already
All of my storage is wasted on nandroids anyway.

The lack of the card slot (which even my Nexus One has) is a real shame - it would only have cost a few pence to include a card slot unless there is something I have missed. The slot would have been preferred to the barometer by the vast majority of people - if we had to choose one or the other.

If they were releasing the 32GB in the UK i wouldn't have wanted an SD slot as that would be enough for me. But as we're only getting the 16GB for whatever reason i would want an SD.
As they're not doing either i'll have to stay with my GS2.

i know i'm having issues with my card slot and/or SD card on my Fascinate. It'll say my SD card is ejected when it's not. I'm starting to think the omission of a card slot isn't so bad.. less moving parts = less things to break? lol

Not too bothered about it at all, never take my card out of the current phone.

I was a little upset about no SD at first, but then realized that I haven't taken the card out of my N1 since I first got the phone and used it to transfer stuff to the new phone...easy enough to do with a USB and 5 minutes.

Only thing that bums me out is I basically can't get the 16GB because if I run out of space I'm hosed.

Use the cloud... everyones doing it heh.

Besides stuff that needs to be on the phone, almost everything (music, docs, photos) are in the cloud for me.

You are totally missing the point of the sdcard slot. The biggest advantage is being able to upgrade the amount of storage if you need it. The fact that it costs next to nothing now makes it even better. Also, a less used upside is the ability to read it even if your phone stops turning on at all.
To me, the best solution would be to have lots of internal storage but still have the option of an sdcard for extra storage for movies, lossless audio and other big files if the user wanted. I would be totally fine with it being used entirely for user storage. Any form of cache files that are currently stored on the sdcard probably belongs on the internal memory.

Well you got a small screen so movies shouldnt be large in size and phones probably aren't the best devices to playback lossless audio to make a difference audibly.
I'm pro SD card though but really you just slap a large one in there and forget about it. I do use it as a quick medium to transfer custom roms and kernels to my buddies... pictures to my gf... etc. Seemed transfers were faster directly using the SD card vs going through the phone... but with the cloud and wireless transfer methods, its a mute point.
Most stuff can be in the cloud such as pictures and music and even nandroid backups (only need a few locally). I keep games/apps/wallpapers locally but those could even go to the cloud. As long as I can download them when I need them. And you don't need to have a whole movie collection on you at all times. Just a few throwbacks for travels.

I did want it. But I guess its cool that they're selling a 32gb version, just hope it's not an outrageous price. But I've never modded a phone without removable storage before. Either way, I'm buying on launch day.ill be importing from the UK since T-Mobile hasn't said a peep about it and I don't feel like waiting another month or two or three

I just don't understand why anyone in their right mind would want to swap fast internal memory for slow external memory.
External memory will always be slower than internal. I have over 300 apps and half of my internal storage space. As for my 64gb sd card, I have 54 gb used in mp3 The rest is for uploading movies and photos.
No issues with app speeds and video and audio playback.

Well gooberdude, it is possible to get pretty darn quick UHS-I cards now. With a USB 3 port and adapter, mine is darn fast for like $25 off Amazon's gold box. Problem is how fast the actual slot is lol.
In some products it can actually be better to do a swap. On the old Transformer Prime (TF201) and perhaps many Tegra 3 products, the flash chips are so crappy that even a good external card and some duct tape (to keep it in) can be a performance improvement. I've not seen a Samsung device use such crappy storage but then again, I've only used Galaxy S and Galaxy Note, not their budget fair.
In regards to the OP - rooting your tablet and using FolderMount as gooberdude suggested, it is a far less involved procedure. It is best if you just want to move some stuff from internal /storage/emulated/0 (aka /data/media, /sdcard, and /storage/sdcard).
Towards a real swap, it is usually possible by modding your system to think the external is the internal and doing some appropriate partitioning/data magic wand waving. This is an involved enough process vs what the typical PC user understands how to do that I generally DO NOT RECOMMEND unless you are a developer and comfortable building Android from source, hacking the source, and flashing code. In which case, you can also use Google and find out how to do it and how Android handles mounting file systems. Hint: look at Sony and ASUS mods.

HTC 10: A devourer of SD cards?

Today my SD card died and took some pictures with it to the grave, fortunately nothing very important. It may not have been the most expensive card, but it was a fast one and I used it as internal storage. It didn't show any signs of deterioration before it died. I tried to read the card with my PC and two tablets but none of my devices is able to even see the card.
Before buying a new SD card I want to ask a few things:
Does the HTC 10 have more problems with SD cards than other phones in your opinion?
Should I use my new card as internal storage again or do you recommend to use it as external storage?
Is it worthwhile to buy an expensive card? I laid my eyes on this one: SDSQXCG-064G-GN6MA (SanDisk Extreme PRO microSDXC Memory Card Plus SD Adapter up to 100 MB/s, Class 10, U3, V30, A1 - 64 GB). It costs about 50€.
I hope that you want to share your thoughts with me.

If the card was inexpensive and fast, I would think that the compromise made was on build quality/reliability. Using the card as internal storage will wear on the sdcard more than using it as external storage (more reads/writes, more heat) because it will store apps and app data on the sd card.
I don't think the HTC 10 has a problem with sd cards, I haven't heard this issue come up before.
If you have enough space for apps on the internal storage, I would recommend keeping the sd card as external storage.
However, if you still need to use a card as internal storage, you definitely want to get a more expensive card.
Sandisk extreme pro is a good choice because it's made for use with devices like GoPros that do constant writing for extended periods of time, meaning that they can handle the heat that builds up when constantly writing to the sd card.
Sometimes it could really just be pure chance, maybe you got a bad card that died early, but I definitely think it would have lasted longer as external storage.
I'd be interested to know if anyone else has had a similar problem with any phone with an sd card as internal storage.

The thing is - current sd card technology is not suitable for adoptable storage. Multiple read write proceses are killing memory cards. So, until someone makes a card that can take the beating of multiple read write proceses, just use your card as it's ment to be used - as a removable storage and you'll be just fine [emoji6]

I've taken all these points into consideration when I chose to use my first SD card as internal storage. I really would like to know if a high quality card could last the expected lifetime of my HTC 10 when using it as internal storage. I wanted to avoid the limitations Google imposed on write access to the external card but when I saw the limitations of the internal storage solution I was unsure if it was a good decision.
It's good to hear that you do not have the experience that the HTC 10 has a problem with SD cards. With that information in mind I can buy an expensive SD card with good conscience.

I've just sent back my second SanDisk Extreme PRO card in 18 months. The first one stopped working after just 4 months in the HTC 10, the second one a few weeks ago. The circumstances were identical, I wrote larger amounts of data in a short time and the phone started saying that the card has to be formatted. I could use a reader connected to my laptop to get most of my data back, but the phone insisted on a format. I'm not sure if it was the SanDisk cards or the phone, either way, I ordered a Samsung card this time. Luckily amazon.de is extremely customer friendly and just gave me my money back in both cases.

I always use transcend, I've had a 128gb external SD card in since may 2016, all camera shots goto external card, all flashing and backups goto external card. Never had a problem, touch wood ?

Guys, are any of you using Spotify? I have consistently had microSD cards die after downloading songs for offline use i.e. two phones and three different microSD cards.

I use a Samsung evo card as removable storage since January, never had any problems with it. They are a bit more expensive, but it is worth it in my opinion. I use it mainly for Spotify and Netflix downloads as well as pictures (wallpapers) and ringtones... Don't use a rather inexpensive card as adoptable storage, since they are too slow. Or even expensive cards for that matter In a few years, sd cards will be fast enough, but not today. Also, I fail to see a practical use for using the card as adoptable storage as of right now since 32 gb are plenty of space for apps

I did not know that it is possible to tell the Spotify app to use external storage. Will try when I get my new card.

I'm going to buy a card produced by a reputable company this time, for sure. But I thought that cards with the A1 specification (Application performance class] would be fast enough for use as adopted storage. But you are right, 32 Gb is a lot of space for apps.

Actually, if Spotify recognises your sd card as removable storage, it even is the default setting

I've used Samsung evo and Sandisk Ultra Extreme and the both failed a short time after downloading Spotify songs!

I've had a Transcend 64GB card fail after a few months. It was inserted as external storage and I was able to recover its contents on a PC. I was able to put it back in the phone without formatting it, just tried a few times until eventually it worked.
It happened when it was very hot outside, not sure if this is related or not. I wonder how many failed cards are failing during hot weather, during heavy phone use, or in hot climate areas.
I've switched to a Samsung 128GB evo plus now, u3 speed, so far so good. Fingers crossed. Judging by this thread though, it does seem that this phone kind of eats through SD cards.

This is precisely what I wanted to know in this thread. Before buying my first card for the HTC 10 I read a number of threads that suggested this phone specifically has problems with cards bigger than 64 GB. But the reaction to my thread doesn't seem to be so hysterical to me.

I been using a Toshiba Exceria M302 128GB as external storage since the phone first launched and it hasn't failed on me yet, touchwood. Although I only been using up to around 50GB usage, I have re-download my Spotify collection a couple times.

The SD card in my HTC 10 is going on 15 months old, and it's still ticking. I have never used it as adaptive storage. It just stores photos taken on the camera (which are backed up to Google Photos). Some games offer to save data onto the SD card, so I do that as well. It's a Samsung 64GB PRO (class 10).
Not sure if the UHS-1/3 cards will fare better.

If i buy the 128gb model have Samsung finally allowed the use of an SD card as adoptable storage yet?
If not is their a hack to enable this for this phone?

As far as I know adoptable storage was never fully implemented by Android. From what I understand the speed of the SD card is way slower then the internal storage so if you merge then together you end up with a weakest leak situation. Samsung's inclusion of adoptable storage is what made TouchWiz so darn laggy. For now it's still actually there but case by case. If you go to different app settings some will give you the option to move it to the SD card. And it's always be that way. Nothing new.

I am pretty sure adoptable storage on Android is a standard thing - since Android M.....its just Samsung that refused to implement it.
I do understand why they dont implement it - that's because if people use it the phone will lag and slow down sometimes when using apps whos data is stored on there - and samsung are worried they will get support calls regarding this and also it may reflect badly on the phone itself...
I currently own a razer phone 2 (RP1 previous to that), and previous to that all Samsung. The RP1 and 2 both support adoptable storage and as long as you purchase a high-speed sd card (not the standard ones) then adoptable storage works well
I want to buy the 512gb Ultra but they are out of stock everywher in the UK - so i thought an option would be to buy the 128gb as long as it supprts adoptable storage so i can "turn it into" a larger device storage

I know this an older thread, but with the speed of cards, I don't understand why an alternative to adoptable storage hasn't been developed. I had the Razer phone 2 with a Samsung EVO U10 512GB card and the phone was not noticbly slower in everyday tasks, but did slow when loading games and such. I still loved it, however, I think it was ditched by Samsung because people don't understand that once the card is adopted, removing it with the device on, renders all data on th card as corrupt, even upon reinsertion. Sometimes it's reclaim the card other times it wouldn't. Samsung tech support would be inundated with calls related to it so it was disabled. With the files sizes ballooning, 256GB should be the smallest storage available on a a premium phone and with the advances in storage, why isn't the OS determining what can and cannot go onto the SD card automatically?
I currently use APP2SD and while it moves the apps, I don't seem to be gaining that space back on the internal storage. Weird.

While not a strictly apples-to-apples comparison, I find fbind more flexible and largely superior to adoptable storage.

i will just wait until terabyte nand-flash ufs will be standard in even the cheapest smartphones. apps like firefox, aliexpress, amazon, google itself generate so much data it's horrible. i have to clear the data once every week. when you watch a movie with firefox for android and the movie is 1000 mb big, guess how much nand-flash will be used? you guessed correctly 1024 mb!

Adoptable storage is awesome - it works really well on all but Samsung.
Isnt there some way of using the external storage -
Its ridiculous that they build a tablet that has only 3GB storage free with a memory expansion slot that can hold memory but cannot be used by the system.
This device was a gift - will NEVER buy Samsung.
