Anyone else have in issue on stock kitkat where GPS randomly loses its lock? I had an S4 before I got this phone and I could have it in my lap while driving and it be perfectly fine, but with the Note 3, if I have the phone in my lap while driving, it'll lose GPS lock after a while and i have to hold the phone up to get a GPS lock again.

I've had multiple Note 3's through various carriers and my wife has one as well. None of the Note 3 models have ever had "the strongest" gps. The S3 I had and the Note 2 I had in the past had far better GPS accuracy.
I'm not letting it worry me, I intend to "jump" for the Note 4 when it comes out.

My S4 had awesome GPS locks. I could be in the middle of my house and get an accurate lock. My Note 3 can barely hold a lock unless i'm holding it up against my window or windshield. Looks like it's time to invest in a dashboard mount.

Unfortunately, I'm not rooted. I just got the phone so it came with KitKat and I don't want to trip Knox
Same problem here. When I use the GPS TEST it works. When I try using Waze or Google Maps, nothing. What's funny, if there's some fun in this, is that waze works ok in background when GPS TEST is open. At least I get voice directions. When I try oppening both in multi-window, Waze stops again... I've tried everything, from stock to every rom I found, but nothing makes the GPS works with Waze and GM. No GPS "fixer" does any better here.
I had TERRIBLE GPS issues, complained to Tmobile numerous times. They sent be out a NEW replacement phone (I told them I refuse for them to send me a remanufactured phone, it took a little bit of "back and forth") now it works perfect.

I have a Samsung 6.3 with metro pcs...ever since I got this phone and try to use waze (error saying no gps try going out doors) turn by turn will not kick in till iam about 25 minutes on my drive than goes back out....can you please help I have googled went to several phone stores, contacted Samsung etc etc...I love waze when it works and my job requires gps..uber and lyft driver..thanks you

Is anyone concerned on whether or not the phone will have issues locking on to your location? I currently have a samsung droid charge and the thing takes minutes to lock (talking 10 to 15 minutes at times). I'm aware samsung has had faulty gps with the first galaxy series as well, but haven't checked on their latest phones recently. Anyone know if the nexus s had any gps problems? Just hoping this phone won't suffer from the same problems as those other phones.
The built in barometer sensor will probably help.
Here's an article published by PocketNow:
Google Confirms Barometer Intent: Faster GPS Locks
According to Morgill, the intended use for the barometer sensor will be speeding-up GPS acquisition. We had mentioned the ability to gauge altitude via barometric pressure, but focused on its use in estimating altitude independently of GPS, saving battery life. Instead, Morgill says, it's to make initial GPS calculations go faster.
While it's easy to keep-up with GPS satellites, an initial lock-on can take a smartphone's GPS receiver a little while to make. Besides needing to wait to receive satellite constellation data from the GPS birds, the receiver needs to solve a complicated set of equations to figure out your location. One of those values it's solving for is your altitude coordinate, and if you already have a pretty good guess what it's near, you can speed up the rest of the equation-solving. Of course, you always could use the sensor for any of the uses we mentioned, given the proper app support, but this GPS-assist looks to be the primary motivation for the sensor's inclusion.

Even better would be to know that it uses the Russian Glonnas system as well as the US GPS sats to give double the number of possible sats to lock to. The Samsung Note uses Glonass and the Apple 4s uses both. Let's hope the Galaxy Nexus does the same.
I am hoping that after more than a year and over thousands of complaints Samsung got their act together and got that damn GPS working like HTC's devices.
The gps lock seems pretty quick judging from this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-yWgzoJXMA#t=9m41s
Nexus s zero GPS issues full stop!
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
The Galaxy S debacle gave Samsung a black eye they won't soon forget. Whatever the issue was though, it was solved when I got my NS about a week after launch. It locks usually in less than 5 seconds and has only lost signal a few times and has never failed to function for the nearly one year that I've been using it.
Yeah this was the only thing stopping me from pre-ordering the galaxy Nexus.
My Galaxy S Vibrant (T-Mobile) has a though usable GPS, it's complete garbage.
I remember driving down I-5 on my way down to Portland... it kept jumping in between local roads and the actual I-5.....
So I take it that GPS is fairly fast to lock and accurate? (keep in mind I don't use A-GPS since I have very limited Data)
very quick GPS lock and accurate from my attempts so far
Just stood outside in an alleyway between houses and got a lock in under 10 seconds !
Yeah mine has got pretty good GPS performance, although coming from a Galaxy S anything is better.

It literally locks in 10 seconds while outdoor and 20 while indoor. Really works well

Has there been any confirmation that galaxy nexus can use GLONASS satellites?
I've had no problems with gps so far.
sent from a galaxy far far away.
tested it right after the buy. i am a geocacher the fix was instant. Much faster than my Desire HD
Droid Charge (my dad and sister has one) can take several minutes or longer. My Motorola Triumph could take 5 minutes out in open area (pathetic)
Nexus, locked within 5s from within a bathroom first time ever using it, down to 10M accuracy.
Needless to say, I am very unhappy that it wasn't instant but I suppose I can live with 5s
Off Topic, I read that the galaxy note uses 3 different GPS systems, US/Russia and something else, so it's able to see about double the sats in the sky - anyone know if nexus is the same way?

Thanks for the reply. Yeah it happens on any rom and doesn't happen with 3g or wifi.
My wife's l900 is having the same issue. Wiped system in twrp & flashed new rom & the issue remains.
No issues here. I live about 30 minutes outside of Atlanta, Georgia. I was still using my Evo LTE when I got LTE in my area. Didn't have the problem before the tower upgrade, during or after. Since LTE became live in my area, the entire surrounding area is now fully blanketed in LTE!! I'm finally living Sprint again, have been for about 8 months now. Anyway, where I was going with that is that in none of the LTE areas I go through do I have that issue. Even when in a bad area and my phone switches back to 3G, then back to LTE, or when I switch from Wifi to LTE, I never have that issue. I can confirm this for my Note 2, Evo LTE, and my girlfriend's S3.
Are they still upgrading the towers where you're having this issue? Maybe it's due to work they are currently doing. I know when the tower by my house was getting upgraded, my 3G speeds plummeted to pathetic speeds! Even still, pictures would render fine, just took longer than normal.
Also, I'm assuming you're meaning that even once the picture is done rendering of all looks bad, not just while it's rendering. Correct?

Thanks for asking, I am LOVING it!!! I believe this is my favorite Android phone so far!! Used it for almost a week stock, not even rooted! That's by far the longest I have ever gone without rooting and flashing! Well, the longest I've gone when there was the ability to root anyway. I usually buy phones on launch day, and have to wait a little bit before a root exploit is found. Have to wait MUCH longer for s-off on HTC phones!! This is actually the latest after launch that I have bought a phone since..... I don't even remember really, back in the WinMo days though. I was calling Verizon early in the morning to preorder the Touch, Touch Pro, and then the Touch Pro 2 on the days they became available to preorder. I was really contemplating the S4, but I did something I haven't done in probably 10 years and bought a phone that hadn't JUST been released! Lol. The Note 2 is an amazing phone though, and totally won me over when comparing the two phones side by side! A lot of people say that you don't need a tablet if you have the Note 2, but I still use my Asus Infinity a lot! The Tegra 3 and full HD 10" display is simply amazing for gaming!! Plus, there's a few games optimized for the Tegra 3 and add special effects not available on devices without Tegra 3. GTA series, ShadowGun, Dead Trigger, Need for Speed, etc(I could keep going) are truly awesome on the Infinity! Having an HDMI port built in to the side makes it super easy to hook it up to my 55" Sony LED for an even more amazing experience, and using a PS3 controller to play makes it that much better!! Anyway, enough rambling on. I'm still running the shipped rom now, but I've got root and have TWRP installed so I'll be trying out some different roms in the morning, maybe even tonight if I don't start getting tired soon. Just bone stock though, the Note 2 is truly an INCREDIBLE phone!!!! So incredible that it pulled me out of a 7 or so year streak of nothing but HTC phones!

Amen my good sir. That is exactly how I feel. I have been flashing/tinkering every single smartphone I have since back in the Palm Treo days until this note. Just haven't have the desire yet with this phone. Yes, I'm pretty satisfied after a long list of HTC phones. Not that anything wrong with HTC. I'm not loyal to any brand, just which ever suites my need at the time.

Yes! I'm in Seattle and this has been happening to me for the past few weeks. I thought I was the only one! It seems like I have to turn the phone off for a few minutes and then back on to get the colors and images the way they should be. I haven't hard reset my phone yet, but I'm considering it. I haven't found a permanent fix for this problem yet but it seems like it would be a software problem.
I'm using Go Launcher EX and the stock un-rooted phone.
So I purchased my note ii from att at full price as they won't give any discount. Hefty amount of 700 $. I expected to notch quality but after several months of usage I an already song host of issues. Biggest issue is Screen falls to rotate lot of time. This is becoming almost everyday issue. Browser gets sick in vertical position. Also keyboard intermittently disappear from screen while ia am typing.
Does any one experience during tbeir usage? I took it to att they cld not say anything other than suggesting me to go to their service center?

ok guys i got a simple question
here is what i plain to use it for
School (industrial design major) i use a few autodesk apps on my note 3 and Spen makes it easy.
Games (the basic racing type + clash of clans i do own a Moga Pro Power)
the web. every once in a blue moon i might use it for media
I can't make up my mind do i get this and Hope Samsung fixes the Touch Screen
or do i burn my pocket on a Note Pro 12
and hows the Bluetooth is it any good. (moga drops a lot on stock Note 3 but runs perfect on wicked rom)
i had a first gen lenovo yoga 13 and it never left my hands. so for size anything under 13 I'm fine with
i think for a laptop replacement 8" is to small
I'm open to here your recommendation
i will not buy apple anything..mostly because i have almost 1000$ in apps on Google play
right now what I'm looking at
Note 10.1 (2014)
Note Pro 12.2
ASUS 10.1 prime + dock (i had a TF201 and TF101 loved them both but miss first gen dock)
and what ever you guys think
to top this all off i need it for class in 17 days

LOL. The same poster of the "multitouch expose" in this forum has a similar thread going in the N3 forum. I never took the time to figure out whether my N3 and N10.1-14 were affected and haven't had an issue with either. I don't count something as a problem unless it affects what I do every day. If I have to download apps and go through multiple non-typical gyrations to prove something's wrong it's probably not relevant in the first place.

Some early N10.1-14's had a h/w issue where HID devices couldn't hold connections. It's quieted down so perhaps whatever the issue was has been corrected in production. I use BT constantly and have never had an issue; in fact it's better than any device I've previously used. But I have a Gear connected to my N3 along with my car multiple hours a day and never had an issue with it either.

i agree 95% with what your saying just as a heads up i plain to buy whatever i buy from amazon (500$ gift card from B-day)

I plain to use Spen a lot With CAD software witch means having my palm or so resting on the screen. ghost touching is my fear with Swipe on the keyboard as well it's about 95% how i type and 50% the reason i got a note 3 and not a nexus 5 (other 50% was the Spen).
i know i sound a little unsure but only because i want it to last the next 2 years with school i will not have the cash to go a new route later with school 6 days a week working just don't work.
and yes love my N3 but my first one died in flames while on it's own charger the 2nd day i had it 2nd one has been good for about 2 months now..

The GPS doesn't lock reliably and it loses location all the time... usually at the worst possible time of course ?.
I had a one plus McClaren and it had the same issues... actually this phone is worse.
Can't really blame the phone it really seems like its has something to do with the 5g. My pixel 3xl works flawlessly with the same sim.
Turning off 5g doesn't solve the issue for me either. So no easy fix.

I had a OP 6T before this s20 Ultra. I had the same issued you did with my 6T as your McLaren.
I do think the Samsung is actually a little bit better than the 6T. The 6T would just randomly stop tracking me and place me on the next road over, etc.
The S20 just stops tracking for a moment then picks right back up. I see issues with it but not like I did with 6T. I also think moving from T-Mo to ATT gives me a more reliable data connection so GPS seems a little better.
I also use my phone for DoorDash and hate these GPS issues.
Some people never see the issue but run 4 to 10 hours a day with GPS and I see it all the time.
BUt to answer your question. Yep, it seems like Android 10 itself is the actual culprit. This is what I have read when I was the 6T. Dont know if there is any truth to that.
S20 Ultra - started experiencing gps issues today too. On and off, and haven't been able to permanently fix yet.

My pixel 3xl has android 10 on it and works flawlessly.
Every 5g phone I've tried has had GPS lock issues. T-mobile released an update that was supposed to fix it when I had the one plus 7t pro McClaren and it improved it but definitely didn't fix it.
I have issues with my ultra as well. Using waze it was putting me almost a Mille off I had to stop and restart everything and then it worked. Someone in the S20 sub reddit mentioned it and a bunch of people had the issue as well.
Ya know I hate to bring it up but a scary thought occurred to me...
The gps issues make the find me app almost useless. God forbid you leave or your phone walks off.
If the gps doesn't track correctly that feature is not gonna be reliable.
I don't even know who to blame here...
The device the 5g???
Seems to be pretty obvious its a 5g issue. None of my 4g phones have the gps lock issue.
Why do they even integrate it into the data. Couldn't it run as a standalone? Its got its own antenea doesn't it?
This is so disappointing... i did NOT buy this phone for the 5g but it seems that it might ruin it for me.
My gps is pretty important to me.

"the 5g???" That's a valid assumption imo, 5G interference(stronger source) against GPS(weaker RF signals)

I recently came from the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren edition. GPS would not lock on the McLaren 5G because of 5G. When you disabled it, it would start working again if connected on LTE or WIFI.
Considering someone above tried that already, it might be a few other things:
#1 - Depends on the GPS app you are using. Maps worked best with Google Location Services enabled. Waze has been wonky on all devices lately. It took me 10-15 seconds to get a lock last night as an example but it eventually locked on (unlike the OnePlus McLaren which could go forever until it did).
#2 - Software glitch. Just like the OnePlus McLaren, a patch will be released to fix the issues with GPS and 5G. It was an issue on a lot of 5G variants of phones.
#3 - 5G Interferes with GPS (rumor and speculation by others)
I have the same issue sometimes its fine and other times I'm 600 meters off to the north east. It feels random. When I plug my phone into my android auto it locks right on but according to gps status pro the device thinks its 600 meters off. So when I unplug it shoots me right back to the wrong location.
What’s weird is I used GPS on the phone to drive from Northern to Southern CA on Wednesday. Then I think on the last part of the trip, as I arrived in LA, the GPS lost and couldn’t maintain lock. Yesterday and today GPS lock was nonexistent driving around Ontario, Rialto areas of SoCal. Had to rely on map and directions of Waze and not tracking location.
My GPS is nearly flawless for me - best I have seen on any previous android - and very fast....

You using The International Version? Because the problem is with the Snapdragon chipsets on the U.S. Phones. The Exynos chipsets in the International version don't have this problem.
US unlocked version here, mine is flawless as well

G988U - Snapdragon - never had an Issue that I am aware of - when I run an apk to test GPS, I pickup all the satelites in seconds- it happens really quick and I haven't noticed any issues -
tell me how I can 'test it" to see if there are issues I am not aware of - but otherwise, it seems really good to me....

I guess I am lucky then. I haven't really had any issues with this phone, aside from a little bit of the focus issues that were happening with the camera - those have seemed to gotten better too - and like most previous Samsung PHones the S20 ultra will only get better as more updates are released.
The screen shot below is from the GPS Test apk - in the past, if I tried doing a test indoors, it usualy took a few minutes to acquire satelights - but with my new S20 Ultra - I acquire satelights within seconds of opening the apk. It happens really fast for me....hope yours gets working better in the near future...

I'm on the US Unlocked Snapdragon and i was definitely having GPS issues. I had GPS Status & Toolbox app installed with the Time to fix status enabled. Almost always between 60 to 90 seconds to get first fix even after doing it repetitively. After the latest firmware update i'm now getting an almost instant fix based on the GPS Status & Toolbox app. I was also having issues with WAZE not locking on for a long time. Google Maps seemed better. WAZE now locks on almost immediately.
