Mime Feather Glass - Adhesive on both sides? - Nexus 5 Accessories

I just received my Mime Feather glass in the mail and went to apply the thing. This is my second Mime Feather glass, and the installation of the first went flawlessly, so I wasn't expecting anything different this time around.
After a little wrangling, I manage to position the glass to my satisfaction. I then removed the "step two" piece of plastic to reveal the front of the glass and it turns out that it is partially adhesive as well??? I'm totally stumped and I've already contacted Mime and am awaiting their response, but has anyone else experienced this before?
The glass I received was a replacement for my first Mime Feather glass which developed a hairline crack in under five months of use. The phone wasn't dropped or anything and I've had both the glass and a Diztronic case on the phone since it came out of the box. I don't know why the glass cracked, but Mime agreed to give me 50% off and free shipping on a replacement.
Just a heads up for anyone else considering the product.

I just wanted to update this thread to inform anyone who is considering purchasing a glass protector from MIME.
First off, I determined what the issue was. It turns out that the glass they sent me was actually two pieces of glass which were fused together. I don't know how or with what they were fused together with, but they were. With the two pieces fused together, I was left with two pieces of glass with the adhesive side of each piece of glass facing outward (one on the phone and one which my fingers would touch). Once I figured out that it was two pieces of glass, I managed to peel away the outer piece, but it took significant force to separate the two. Whatever held the two pieces of glass attached to each other was strong enough that it easily lifted the glass that was applied to the phone and likely deformed it. Ultimately, I have a single glass applied to the phone but there are bubbles all over the place due to separating the two pieces of glass.
I attempted to contact MIME regarding the issue and all they've done is ask for photos of the issue when I've already explained that the piece of the glass that was facing outward is in the garbage and the piece of glass that is on the phone looks like any other glass except for the air bubbles that resulted from the force required to separate the two pieces. At this point, I doubt I'll be getting a replacement.
I guess I'm updating this as a warning to potential future customers. My first MIME glass developed a crack in it after five months of use. The phone was never dropped or came into contact with any sharp objects. I loved the glass at first - so much that I recommended it to a friend. His glass developed a crack as well shortly after mine. MIME agreed to ship me a replacement for 50% off. I took the offer, but quite honestly after only five months of use, I expected a free replacement. Now I'm being asked to prove that what I'm saying is true about the fused pieces of glass and by the sounds of things, I'm not going to be entitled to a replacement.

Like buttered toast...

...my naked N5 slipped from my cold, numb fingers and landed flat but face down on a NYC sidewalk a couple days ago. At first it looked like a "soft landing" but no such luck and now I'm looking at a screen replacement (screen itself OK, but glass cracked all to hell).
So now I'm wondering if this could have been prevented simply by a case and not necessarily a screen protector as well. I've used cases such as an Otterbox Commuter in the past but never dropped any of those phones to the extent this one went down. It seems to me that any case with a slight lip on the front -- as most of them must have -- would be enough since the screen itself would not hit the ground.
From research on this forum and web sites I'm currently favoring the Spigen Thin Armor case but am wondering if a high-quality screen protector would also be worth it. My screen at the time it was damaged really had no scratches at all, so the Gorilla Glass was doing its job. Would one of those tempered glass protectors also provide shatter protection? Or would a decent case by itself be sufficient?
FWIW, I've used thin-film protectors in the past but always found them annoying due to bubbles, making the screen less readable, and/or affecting the touch response.
Even with a case on, if there was a small rock or a jagged edge on the ground that nicks the screen, it would have still been toast anyway. This is regardless of if there was a lip protecting it or not. It all depends on what's on the ground by chance.
A tempered glass protector probably could have saved the screen though, since you said it landed flat on its face. Tempered glass protectors are perfect for impacts that land face down, not so much on edges or sides. You will see most demonstrations of tempered glass done with nails, hammers, drop tests, etc. with the phone being impacted directly on the face. If it impacts from the side, there is a good chance the screen could still break as tempered glass isn't really designed to protect from those types of impacts.
That is where the case with a lip comes in. Those are meant to protect from side and edge impacts. Most drops generally don't land flat like yours, they tend to bounce around on corners first, so the case would absorb most of the impact and not the phone directly.
Your best bet is to both have a tempered glass screen protector (for flat impacts), and a bumper frame or TPU case (for the rest).
I use a Nillkin H+ Tempered Glass screen protector and a bumper frame (back not covered as I put a skin on the back) and I'm pretty much covered for most brain lapse moments.

Once you learn the hinge method for putting on screen protectors, you won't have air bubbles or dust underneath. You can't even tell my phone has a screen protector on it. Youtube has several videos on how to do it properly.
I refuse to pay big $$$ for glass protectors because you only get one of them, and you either do it right, or throw it away. With plastic protectors, you get several for a few dollars.

That's not true. I applied and removed my Nillkin more then 10 times during the application to get rid of the dust I missed trapped underneath because I suck at applying screen protectors. It reapplied the same every time. All you have to do is make sure you don't firmly press it down and you're fine. This is even after you see the adhesion process occur. It will still peel up. The adhesive takes a few hours to a day (depending on brand) to fully stick/cure.
If a person like me can apply one glass screen protector, anyone else will do it better. One is all you need.
Plastic will only give basic scratch protection and leave a greasy screen after a while. If it takes the same fall his did, the screen would still be done for.

What bumper frame do you use? I've been looking for one myself for a while now...
Cases protect the actual body of the phone, and maybe the screen if it happens to land flat. But if a rock of some other elevated object hits the screen then it will be done for. And a plastic screen protector will do nothing, that protects against scratches like from sand. A glass one would be the best bet for shatter protection. I've seen a person take a hammer to a screen with a glass screen protector on. The protector was rekt but the phone screen was fine.

There are 2 that I would probably recommend. I'm currently using a transparent bumper case off of ebay. I did a review here http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/accessories/lucency-transparent-bumper-case-review-t2690108. It is $2.88 shipped. If you do choose this one, I would stick to black. After using them for a while now, the various colours tend to stain easily, but the black doesn't. It is just for light drop protection, but since the main body is a harder plastic, it won't absorb a higher drop like a softer bumper frame, or a TPU case would. I personally like it because it is transparent and you can still see the sides of the phone and the skin through it.
The other is the replica Nexus 4 bumper, for the Nexus 5. Mine is still in the mail so I haven't tried it out yet, but others have bought it and it seems to have gotten pretty good reviews overall. http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/accessories/replica-official-nexus-4-bumper-nexus-5-t2698422. It's a little bit pricier at $12.99 off Amazon, or around $8 - $10 off Aliexpress.

There are many choices for thicker protection cases. Properly applied screen protectors don't have any bubbles.

FYI - Official Tempered Glass Protector - If it doesn't fit nicely, it's your phone!

My wife and I both own a OPX. When I bought our phones from OP, I also purchased two tempered glass screen protectors. I bought them impulsively before reading that a lot of people were having issues with the tempered glass. After pushing off the installation for a bit, I decided to apply the TGSPs to both phones. I ended up discovering these issues have nothing to do with the TGSP and everything to do with our phone's slight variances in curvature.
I applied the TGSP on my wife's phone first- resulting in an air gap all around the edges. At first, I blamed the TGSP. When I applied the second one on mine, I essentially had zero gaps. I thought maybe my TGSP was from a good batch. I don't care much about external imperfections with cases/screen protectors, so long as the phone is protected. So, I decided I should swap screen protectors with her.
When I was applying my ("good") protector on her phone, there were still gaps. And with her ("bad") protector on my phone, I still had zero gaps.
So now she thinks my phone is perfect, and her phone is defective. :silly: She doesn't really mind it either.
The thing I noticed is that the air gaps are so thin that you can't even slip a thin sheet of paper in there. We're probably talking fractions of a millimeter. Yet the gap is still wide enough to cause an eye sore to many people.
This basically means that until a manufacturer can produce a TGSP that works with all OPX phones. You're just going to have to take a chance.
TL;DR- Installed two official OPX glass screen protectors on two different OPX phones. Phone A fit perfectly, Phone B did not. Swapped the screen protectors, Phone A still fit perfectly, Phone B still did not.
See pictures.
Interesting, this is the first time I see one fitting correctly of the many reports.
I did order one myself, haven't even opened the package since it arrived, might give it a try.
Exact same setup: 2 OPX, 2 TGSP.
I did apply a TGSP to a OPX and everything went fine.
I did apply the other TGSP with the other OPX, and I notice the exact same facking air gap all around the TGSP.
Here is my photos of the problem : https://imgur.com/a/6HnK4
Didn't try to unstick TGSP to try on the other OPX tough.
Actually talking with OP support: they're playing with me, driving me crazy -_-

It'd be nice if OP went back to the drawing board with these TGSPs and send an improved version to everyone that ordered one. :good:
The title is true. First opx I ordered not only had issues with the tempered glass but it also had several weird blotches that appeared to be manufacturing issues with the glass itself. Got my replacement and the screen is perfect and tempered glass fits perfectly with no halos
This glass screen protector fits perfect!

How does the glass hold up?

I've have my 2XL since October 21. I've had ZAGG glass curve on it since nearly day one. I've just cracked my third one. None of the times I've cracked it I've dropped it. Both times I've pulled it out of my pocked and noticed a chip in the middle on the side and it spiders out from there over the next few days. I've had glass protectors on my last couple of phones (S4, Moto X Pure) and never had issues with either of them cracking. Sure I replaced due to wear over time, but never because they broke.
I'm not sending Zagg another $10 for a new one. So I'm wondering how the factory glass holds up. Can I just go naked? Is it just the crappy edge only adhesive on the zagg curve? Looking for other peoples experiences and willing to listen to any advice others may have. I'm going to be pissed scratching up the factory screen and I really don't think I can go back to a "film" type protector.

I've had mine as long as you have. Screen still looks fine without any scratches that I can see. Granted, I take care of my phone, but I don't exactly baby it either. It's been dropped more than a few times, and wound up in my pocket with car keys, and still no bad scratches that I can see. I think if your an average user, and don't work in a construction zone, you'll be fine without a protector :good:

I'd say don't risk it I had my phone since January got Google's screen protector loved it finger prints and smudges where non existent until just a couple weeks ago when I also dropped my phone on the ground and it landed facedown on a rock only the screen protector broke
So I bought a zagg even though a few bad reviews all saying screen breaks too easy I have had this one for a week so far and accedently step on my phone trying to get into the shower did not break my screen so far I'm having no issues except smudges already on day one.

I have given up on screen protectors for this device.
The only ones that cover the entire device are made from plastic/rubber (aka liquid skin) lol. These make no sense, they offer no actual protection to the screen and they feel like crap and look just as bad on the device.
Than you have the tempered glass protectors. You have the option of partial screen coverage, which also ruins the aesthetics of the curved glass. Or you can get the "full coverage" option that claims to have "3d, curved glass". This is by far the worst option available. These manufactures of this garbage even go as far to list serious flaws of their design as selling points in their descriptions. The most glaring examples being, "with Dot Matrix" and "updated adhesive" This is so ridiculous, the "updated adhesive" is just horrible glue that they use on the top and bottom edges of the protector and the "dot matrix" is a full coverage of spaced out semi clear dots that are sold as being added for extra touch sensitivity, when in reality the dots are only added because the screen protector is not actually curved glass, it is flat glass connected to a top and bottom edge made of black plastic. The curved plastic edges are black for one, if they were actually glass that means they painted or tinted the top and bottom edges for no reason other than to have wasted money. And because there are 3 pieces to the protector, with the top and bottom responsible for adhering the protector to the screen, the "dot matrix" is needed because the middle piece is not actually mated to the screen. Any quality screen protector claiming to be tempered glass, does not need a dot matrix and is fully adhered to the screen with a clear silicone adhesive.
in conclusion, the pixel 2 xl has corning gorilla glass 5, this is the best glass currently available on the market. So being as none of the protectors available actually protect against cracked or broken displays, there is no need to waste your time with a screen protector. the only thing that the horrible protectors actually offer is scratch resistance, so unless you keep your phone in your pocket with coins all the time don't bother wasting your time or money on a screen protector.
Had mine without a screen protector since launch, and my screen has noticable scratches, etc.
Don't risk it. Whitestone is pricey $50. But feels like regular screen and removes the worry about damaging this great investment.
G
+1 on Whitestone
I've had mine since 10/24/2018 and no issues. I haven't ever used screen protectors. I tried on a phone several years ago but after like 3 attempts and still not being able to get it on without air bubbles I gave up. Although, I do have a bumper case that gives it a gap to protect from drops. Between that and the Gorilla Glass I've never had an issue. Plus, if I do have an issue I have the Pixel protect plan to take care of that.

Help! Cracked glass on my 7 day old phone :(

So I cracked my front glass under the bottom speaker exactly on the 8th day of owning my new pixel 2 xl :crying:
Thought about selling it as is but I would lose so much money also a screen replacement will set me back at least $200 without labor (Plus it's not available in my country)
I tried to look for a full coverage tempered glass screen protector that would cover this part (in black) but all the tempered glass screen protectors I could find do not cover the glass under the speaker
Last option I found was applying a Dbrand skin on the phone including the front glass that would cover that crack up but I have a few questions:
1. Would the Dbrand skin stick to the cracked part (there small missing pieces of glass that have fallen out)
2. Would removing the Dbrand front glass skin remove more glass from my phone
3. I thought about applying some transparent nail polish to the cracked part so it would hold the glass together so when I take off the skin the glass doesn't come out, good idea or stupid?
4. Should I apply the front Dbrand skin on top of a tempered glass screen protector (I read that it works) or should I apply it directly on the screen better?
I've attached 2 pictures of the cracked part so you can take a look
I really would appreciate all the help I can get as I am currently heartbroken for my new phone

If you do not find a practical Dbrand solution, you could use a tiny pinpoint application of clear resin on the cracks to even things out.
Sad for this to happen.....

I think a Dbrand skin would probably be best specially that it will cover up the crack completely for protection and so I don't see it and weep every time I pickup my phone
However covering the crack with Glue (I thought about transparent nail polish) is a good idea so when the skin comes off it doesn't take any more glass with it, do you have any ideas what I can use on the crack before applying the Dbrand skin?

What kind of resin should I use? I say this because I bought my Pixel 2 XL used for $300 and it has almost the same crack as the OP's pixel, but just on a much larger scale.
Here's the photo.
Could anyone give some advice on how to fill that patch up, as I don't really think that any kind of screen protector nor skin would ever help! Thanks a lot!
P.S.: the crack doesn't come up even a bit to the screen, so the POLED is safe and sound under the glass, but still, I hate that dust and water can get in so easily.
Plus, I had my Pixel for 3 months now, and the crack didn't make shards of glass fall out and the phone works flawlessly, apart from the Lost IP67 water & dust resistant rating.

Clear jeweler's resin like this should work good: https://www.amazon.com/Environmental-Technology-02004-EnviroTex-Jewelry/dp/B007PZW60U The kind that mixes 2 clear liquids- resin and catalyst - will cure as hard as stone and stay clear.

In my case I intend to cover up the crack with a Dbrand skin on the glass, my worry is that the glass will come out when I take the skin off so I just wanted something to hold it together, if this your case too then I suggest you try what I will in couple of days: Sugru
I tweeted my problem to ifixit and they were kind enough to reply with the suggestion to use sugru to hold the glass together : https://twitter.com/Sab3elbromba/status/1028976749873430528
When I did a little googling I found this: https://lifehacker.com/patch-your-broken-smartphone-screen-with-sugru-1440578257
It's not the prettiest thing in the world but I don't care as I will cover it up with a Dbrand skin anyways
I hope that was helpful and sorry for what happened

I really would appreciate all the help I can get as I am currently heartbroken for my new phone

Use a CAR WINDSHIELD REPAIR KIT. It should be able to make that chip nearly invisible, and will also hold the glass together so it doesn't get any worse.
if you bought it with a credit card, it probably has accidental damage protection for the first 30 or 90 days

How about LOCA Glue? (LOCA stands for liquid optically clear adhesive)
It is used by most manufacturerers for their smartphones screens, to attach the glass to the lower OLED stratum specifically because it's completely invisible as the name implies.
I fear that the car windshield repair kit is going to disrupt the screen and penetrate too deep with the pressure applied to fill cracks. How do you feel about it?
Could you give me some pieces of advice for using it the best way? Thanks a lot for the support! @Sab3elbromba @96carboard
Yeah cracked the top of mine yesterday. Stubborn me wasn't using a case. I'm gonna save up and just get it replaced. Was thinking about getting a Pixel 3 this year...guess not.
Not saying this is the right thing to do or that it will 100% work but, it for for sure a possibility.
1. Burn in the screen and RMA claiming a screen burn in.
2. Make something look defective and RMA it
3. Replace the screen yourself
Not suggesting any of these just listing options.

I wasn't suggesting 1 and 2. I was just listing options
I'm really disappointed in the fragility of the glass around the speaker grilles. My cousin dropped his Pixel 2 XL with a Speck Presidio Grip case on, landing back first, and the glass around the top speaker cracked and spread a bit to the screen; even a chunk of glass fell out. From drop tests online, this area appears to break very easily. Why can't Samsung make Pixels? When comparing the Note 8 and Pixel 2 XL side by side, the screen on the 2 XL feels hollow and less reinforced. Google really should do what Motorola used to and offer one free replacement for accidental breakage.

Samsung is in direct competition with Google.
Just imagine if Samsung hardware got optimized directly by Google software. Wow. A Note 9 running pure Google's made Android. A dream.

Tempered Glass and Screen Protector Film

I bought an Edge to Edge tempered glass from good mobile accessory shop and got it fitted in my Mi10 by a professional technician there itself. After a week or so there developed one or two air bubbles in the screen and they began to grow big covering half of my screen. So I approached the shop again and they repalaced the glass with a new one. After about 2 weeks there began to develop air bubbles again and they growing in size gradually. My had not dropped anywhere from me or others. So what is the reason for this?If I replace the tempered glass with a Screen Protector film, can the developing of air bubbles be completely prevented?Aso will this actually protect the phone screen glass from breaking in the event of a fall? Can anyone suggest a good quality Tempered glass and good quality Scree Protector Film?

It will offer some protection but if the phone lands a certain way the screen is going to crack regardless of what you've got on.
I just used a basic film one but the fingerprint is a bit crap. Glass ones never fitted right.
Hey you can try using Siege Glastimate+ for Galaxy S20+. It's a UV glue tempered glass. Price is quite high but it is really case friendly tbh bc im using the glass with my Ringke Fusion-X casing with no problem. And also the tempered glass has no touch issues whatsoever bc it is a UV glue not like normal tempered glass with edge only glue. And for the back panel I'm using a cheap carbon fibre sticker to avoid scratches haha
I bought the one from *******.. to much of my surprise it actually is quite good.
Installation was easy with an included guide/holder. The film has 2 parts that lets you apply the top half first then the bottom.
It's super thin, like what you'd see from the factory. The TPU film is also really smooth.

Not sure why it's putting *** in place of the brand name
Did you test Spigen? The one applied from default is really poor, it is scratched very easily

Did any of you found a good screen protector that is case friendly? I want to use it with a Spigen case. Thanks!
