Do you or do you not? I personally think its overkill. Screens are getting stronger and stronger and granted theres never going to be a 100% solution but for the time being my Folio case does a good job of protecting however inconvenient it is ;-)
I use a screen protector. While there are options for more and more durable glass, that is not a guarantee that the device you are using has it. My g2 for instance has 2 scratches on the screen and I was generally careful in my handling of it. if it is not known to be gorilla glass then i would get some form of protection, either a case of a screen protector. The thing that pushed me over the edge with the xoom is that I decided to go caseless for now. None of the cases out right now appeal to me.

I am not worried about protection as much as I am with the extreme glare and fingerprints. I had the same issue on my Samsung Captivate and Invisible Shield helped dramatically. I ordered the same for Xoom and hope it has the same results.
I have a portfolio case. Idont believe there is a need for a screen protector. Gorilla glass is strong. plus i dont believe there be casual scratches like with a phone and keys in my pocket
I think with most new devices having gorilla glass, its only precautionary to get a screen protector. I have had a droid X since release and have never had a screen protector and the screen is just like the day i got it. But we are talking about a 800.00 device, so then its not a bad idea to cover your investment.
I normally go without a case but for my Xoom I will get one just to help with the fingeprints.

once stienheil releases an anti glare/fingerprint protector I think ill make a purchase because as stated, the fingerprints are terrible on this and they don't wipe off very easy.

Though not antiglare as none were available, I did bought 3x screen protection and of course they are cheap. As soon as they arrived, I tried to carefully apply to my Xoom but I failed after every attempt which resulted in me wasting all 3. Waste of money. ="(

I would say it's overkill.
Back in those days with plastic resistive touch screen, a screen protector was necessary. But nowadays, a typical glass surface (even for non-Gorilla glass) is hard enough that it's rather hard to scratch it. If you drop your device, the glass may shatter, and screen protector is not going to help with that. And if you hit the screen hard with something sharp and strong enough to dent it, it will probably dent through the protector too. I have been using my HTC Desire without any screen protector for almost a year now, and it is still completely scratch-free.
Another reason not to use a screen protector is that they tend to be less oil- and fingerprint-proof. While Apple is the only company advertising that they have an oleophobic coating on their screens to make them more fingerprint-proof, the fact is that most glass screens has such a coating, even though it was not advertised. And most cheap screen protectors don't (can't speak for all of them, probably some more expensive ones have such coating... I don't know). I've tried some screen protectors and I found that oil and fingerprint left on the glass are much easier to remove than those left on the screen protector.
That being said, if you really really hate glossy screen, you may want to put an anti-glare type screen protector on your device. I have one on my iPad. This type of screen protector does create some sparking effect with white background, or make the texts blurry. But they don't look too bad for me, compared to the shiny glare of the iPad...
Are we sure that it uses Gorilla Glass? Ive seen a lot of people alluding to that but no actual statement, and its not on the official Corning list.
I like Steinheil as well, I've had good luck on my phones with them but they are slow to get new sizes out sometimes.
I want something only to reduce glare and fingerprints.
If installing it ends up screwing with touch sensitivity, I'll stick to stock.

When I had an iPod touch, I thought screen protectors would ruin the experience. I soon learned two things.
1. Glass is a finger print magnet.
and
2. You never know when something unexpected will come into contact with your screen. After getting a few scratches from dropping my iPod between my car seat, I decided to get a screen protector.
I got a screen protector from Verizon the day I got my Droid, and put it on right there at the counter. The metal casing of the phone is dinged up, scratched, paint is chipped, etc, but the screen is flawless.
FWIW, I've only put a Body Glove case around my EVO, but have dropped it 4-5 times (in fact, the BG case is warped at one corner after the last drop- been pretty clumsy lately ). Despite leaving my screen unprotected (and it's not GG) these 9 mos, it's still quite pristine despite all the drops and the zillions of touches (and debris, had a cold a couple of months ago!).
So. I have the silicone case (which does prevent me from using all but one iPad stand out there I tried), but no screen protector.

I don't have a screen protector, and I don't plan on getting one. I don't have one on my og droid and I've had it since launch with no issues. Plus I can never get those things on right lol

I think the answer to this is yes unfortunately.
I haven't had it out of the house, haven't knocked it, dropped it, poked it or anything else and I already have a spot on the screen that I can't get off with Microfiber/Distilled water.
Thats pretty darn annoying.

I woke up today and noticed my first scratch. Its about a quarter of an inch long and is really noticeable on a white screen due to the 'rainbow effect'. I use a nice hard silicone case which has done an amazing job protecting my phone from stupid drops and falls (I've had about 5 ).
I now believe that the tempered glass used with the Galaxy Nexus is NOT as strong as Gorilla Glass. Everyone I know with a Gorilla Glass phone doesn't have a screen protector and has NO scratches whatsoever.
Forgive my rambling. Do yourself a favor and buy a screen protector. I know I will be.

but seriously do you know what you did to scratch it? currently I've got an XO and androidified case on mine. But the other day I was at the gym and my nexus fell off an elliptical like machine (twice) the second time one of the feet things smacked it as it was falling (~4.5 ft) and the nexus went flying across the room.
Worse: It didn't have a case on, because I was trying to mod the touchstone tech into my case.
Awesome: picked it up popped the battery in, and it was completely unscathed. I don't understand what people are doing to crack/scratch this thing. It seems pretty solid to me.
I used XO Skins as well. They will fill in that scratch. Their video shows that. I also posted my review of their stuff linked in my signature, as well as about 500+ people on here.
Don't waste your money
Screen proctors are a waste of money, from iphone to droid x and blackberry, never had a scratched screen.
Not to make light of the situation, but I wonder what % of users would try to show a scratch with a screen capture? I'd say a solid 20%.
I got a single scratch too. I've had and used the iPhone 2g since launch and it has not a single scratch, so I am confused as to what I suddenly did differently. I'm sort of annoyed, but whatever =)

Always had a screen protector on my phone, I buy them off ebay (bought about 20 off the same seller, love his screen protectors). It just gives me a sense of mind if my phone falls, which it has. I also have an otterbox commuter (first time buying a case worth more than $10 ). But it has saved my phone.

do you know what scratched your screen??? I sometimes put my car keys in the same pocket as my gnex (although I try not to) and I have not gotten a scratch yet. I can see dropping the phone resulting in a scratch but even drops won't protect gorilla glass completely.

This is likely the case - especially if you can't 'feel' the scratch with your finger/nail.
no glass is scratch proof just some are more scratch resistance. Gorilla glass will still scratch, my Atrix had a few minor scratches. you notice when they do those demos at the gorilla glass booth they only use metal to try to scratch the screen? if someone tries to tell you that gorilla glass on their phone wont scratch ask them to prove it by rubbing some sand on the screen. Stuff like keys wont scratch your screen because they are relatively soft compared to the glass on your screen but stuff like sand and other glass can scratch a chemically tempered glass screen.
I have a scratch around a centimetre long, I can feel it with my fingernails so I agree it is most likely the coating that is damaged .. any ideas how to repair, cover, remove the damage?

I had a screen protector on since day 1 until a couple days ago when it started getting jacked up in the corners. It's so silky smooth without it on that I don't plan on putting another screen protector on.
This is the first phone with which I've ever had a scratch. I pretty protective with my phones. I don't ever put it in the same pocket as my keys. I'm still not sure what I did that caused the scratch. It scared me into getting a screen protector for the first time. I can still barely see the scratch through it. I got a Ghost Armor.
I bought a screen protector weeks before I even bought the phone (as it wasn't available on the market at the time). I wasn't talking no chances. If they had the glass ones from Spigen available I would certainly upgrade. (too bad they can't make one due too the curved glass)

No big scratches yet, but I have noticed some tiny scratches at the bottom where I have laid it down on it's screen from the first few weeks of use. Now I have a screen protector as well as a case.
While waiting for my bodyguardz to arrive(still waiting after 14 days), I went to buy a cheap screen protector even though it ruined the HD of the screen. Totally worth it though
A few hardly noticeable scratches but it still looks better than a screen covered in even the most highly regarded protector.

I am considering switching from the LG G2 to a N5, and I wanted to get some opinions on the matter. I have scoured the internet(including xda) for hours, and I keep getting wildly varying reports from different sources. My concern is that the N5 is very easily scratched.

I used a screen protector on the Photon before saying "screw it" and going naked, and I've used the G2 naked for 5 months. Both screens are still in pristine condition, despite being older revisions of Gorilla Glass(GG1 and GG2, respectively).
My concern is that the N5 is for some reason abnormally easy to scratch. I baby my phones a bit, but not excessively(I put it in a separate pocket with the glass to my thigh, I try not to beat the thing with my finger, nothing crazy...). I figure with the fact that I work in some pretty dusty climates, if dust/sand were an issue, my G2 would be far from pristine. I enjoy the naked feeling, but I'm not sure I feel right purchasing a $40 Tempered Glass protector(that I may need to replace a few times over a year, plus it appears to be a struggle to apply with the fact that the display has a dimple in it). Even though I won't use plastic again, it was nice when it got scratched because it was a few bucks to replace, not 10-15% the cost of the whole phone.
So basically my question is to the people rolling naked(well that sounds wrong...), what are your experiences? I really don't agree with protectors, but my OCD doesn't agree with tiny scratches. Thanks!

I've had my N5 since launch day. I would say I "baby" my phone in that I don't do anything with it that is particularly hard on it. If I shine a flashlight on it or have it outside on a sunny day I can see a few "microscratches" that reflect light but are completely smooth to the touch. Apart from that I don't notice anything, even under bright fluorescent lights in my office.
I don't know why this gets brought up so much. If you're worried so much about scratches then get a protector. If you don't like plastic then get glass... You'll wish you did after replacing several plastic ones. The issues you bring up regarding the glass ones and the dimple on the screen has been long fixed and is no longer an issue. Just spend $35 for a Spigen or ~$20 for a Nillkin glass screen protector and be done with it. Its hardly a waste of money and the protectors are more durable than the actual screen.
You dont really need a screen protector but I have an Invisible Shield on mine and its great, I have one really dense scratch on it that you can only see when the screen is on and you look carefully, that will go away when I peel it off. If you are buying a screen protector make sure it goes with the case you get, some cases might peel off the edges of your protector and ruin it.
Dont really think a screen protector is necessary. I have not used one on my old Note 2 or my htc evo before that. N5 has GG3 which does make it a more scratch resistant. Not running a screen protector

People say you dont need it, until you **** up your screen, looking at my screen right now, its got some fat scratches, except it doesn't, cause the scratches are on the screen protector.
If there's any chance you could get sand or dust in your pocket at any time GET A SCREEN PROTECTOR!
It only took a really small amount of dirt/sand getting in my pocket during a camping trip to hammer my first N5 with scratches.
Tempered glass is great option, u will avoid both scratches and have better protection for the screen in case u drop it, which I do, not often but occasionally

I bought the Spigen Case Slim for the N5 and it came with a free screen protector!!! It works like a charm, for the price of the two, £7 it was a bargain!!! The screen protector is very good also...
It's very clear and your finger doesn't get stuck by no means...
While GG3 is more scratch resistant to keys/knives, I believe it's not more resistant to dust which is the biggest issue when it comes to scratches. My first N5 I didn't have a screen protector on it because I ended up RMA'ing it. It already had some micro-scratches. Again, you can't feel them and barely see them unless you look for them but they're still there so it depends on how much you care about that. I also keep my phone by itself in my pocket with the screen to my leg and they still happen because of the dust. I've been using a screen protector ever since I received the 2nd phone.

I actually have a Note 2 with a tempered glass screen protector. The other day I've met a friend that works on the construction and he died me his Note 2 that he had been using since 6 months ago, and the screen was perfect, without a mark. He sweared that had the phone dropped several times and the screen was, as I said, perfect.
It made me think that maybe the OPO with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3, maybe it doesn't make much sense to use one of these screen protector.
What to you guys think?
Not necessary but if you want the extra protection go for it.

I don't usually run screen protectors but I'm glad I got one for my OPO.
After a few days of owning it I noticed some super light scratches on the bottom of the screen. This was during the brand new period of owning it and the screen had not touched anything except empty pants pocket, my fingers, and t-shirt for cleaning.
Thankfully my ozrly tempered glass protector showed up the next day, and I've been running that since. Pretty happy with it.
Tl;dr: I'd run a lot of phones naked, but not this one.
Precisely, as this is a cheap phone, and also has gorilla glass,I don't see the necessity as in a Note 3 or an iPhone...
as cheap as it is at $360, a $6 protector won't hurt your wallet

The phone is inexpensive but difficult to repair or replace. I see someone doesn't know the difference between the cost of something and how valuable something is.
I always keep my phone in a dedicated empty pocket but it always gets the random light scratch over its lifetime. A good $15-$25 glass screen keeps it looking new. That way when you pull out your device you don't look like some kind of a hobo.
The Ringke Fusion comes with a screen protector free of charge when you buy the case by the way.

All you need to scratch your screen is a grain of sand.
Are glass protectors mandatory? of corse not, otherwise they would come in the package with the phone. That said, i firmly beleave they are a "must have" for any phone, as you will regret not having one as soon as you get a scratch on it. for my xperia z2 it lasted 1 week 'till i regreted not having one, when for the first time I went "YOLO" on a phone.
You don't need a 30 dollar glass protector, I've had all kinds of brands and prices and all i have to say is that they are all the same, the only thing I insist on is rounded edges, so you don't feel it as much.
I'm on my second OPO, since I sold my first one after it fell face down, slightly tilted up, since it damaged the chrome ring on the top. When it fell, along with the dent, the glass screen protector was shattered on the top left. If you did not realize this so far, the only reason my "amazing gorilla glass" did not shatter aswell is that the protector took the hit for it (shattering to spread the energy). Gorilla glass is made to take scratches, not falls.
Finally, it is up to you. Do i think you do not need a normal plastic screen protector? well, you don't. Do you need a GLASS screen protector? after my experience my opinion can only be yes. I am currently waiting for a new one and have a crappy regular protector on.
Ultimate shield has proven to be a very good, not very expensive, and reliable seller for every phone I got it for (htc one m7, note 3, xperia z2, OPO)
Not absolutely necessary, but you really can scratch the phone screen.
Plastic screen protectors scratch really easy because they are plastic. So even if it protects the screen they end up looking like crap. That's where tempered glass protectors shine, it protects the screen and still looks really nice (albeit at a higher cost).
Tempered glass screen protector is never necessary until...well, until you drop the phone once on a wrong surface...

I never really believed in tempered glass, until I saw more videos on these types of ion-reinforced glass. They are definitely not indestructible. As somebody above stated, all it takes is a grain of sand for there to be a micro-scratch on the screen. It's from these nearly-invisible weaknesses that the screen will crack when exposed to force when dropped. I believe the reason is that Gorilla Glass 3 is around 6-7 on the Moh's hardness scale, which is harder than metal, which is why keys and knives don't scratch it, but not as hard as sand or rocks.
So in other words, some type of protector will prevent these micro-scratches. The question is then, plastic or tempered glass? I've always used plastic on the last dozen or so phones and tablets I've had, but even the best plastic one (Belkin) still definitely felt plastic in their friction, it wasn't as smooth as glass, and a year later, there are small scratches in it.
Yes, it's true that the OPO is cheap enough that if you smash it, it's not a huge deal, and yes, there was a screen replacement kit I saw in another thread that was $110 or something, BUT it's the time and hassle. For me, slapping on a $15 glass protector (which I found easier to apply than previous plastic protectors), is worth it.
With the OPO, I decided to try a Nilkin tempered glass protector, and it feels as smooth as the original glass, which is great if you're a power user that does alot of quick inputs. It also seems to be very resistant to scratches so far, but I don't believe it's the 9H that they stated in the ad. The downside is that it's definitely noticeably thick, you can see it from the side, and you can feel the edges next to the cutouts.
PS. I'm no expert, so take it as you will.
My screen scrathed its hairline but it did i now have a thin glass screen protector .25mm thick very thin and looks amazing $6 was shipped from china less then week

I haven't noticed since I have an OtterBox Defender case and Whitestone Dome tempered glass screen protector. Same with my wife's P6P.
I don't think it scratches any more than other phones. I use a flip case without screen protector. I do have 2 or 3 miniscule scratches that are only visible under certain angles or lighting conditions. I would say that it all depends on how you protect and treat your phone.
Sand scratches all glass. Use a case and a screen protector. My 2.5 yo N10+ has no scratches or damage in spite of more then a few drops because it's always in a case with a screen protector. The case should have slightly raised guards on all sides of the display to help prevent contact on face plants.
A good case lessens high G loading that can damage internal components like BGA chipsets during an impact.
I've never used a screen protector, since the beginning of smartphones (Dell Streak 5). I keep my phone in a slim case, and it goes into a padded belt clip case (turtleback brand). My phone is used constanly, and I've never scratched one. But, I also don't go to the beach, or other functions that would allow dirt/rock/debris to get to the screen.
I know accidents can happen, but I try to treat my phones as the EXPENSIVE things they are.

I live the desert. Just for giggles I finally took the screen protector off my old S4+, it felt good.
Within 4 months in spite off being careful it had a couple scratches. One grain of sand is all it takes... and sand is found everywhere.
Any pocket grit can mar glass.
Your dry fingers are also abrasive to glass and will gradually wear it down over time.
No screen protector, never used them. Day one purchase and no scratches. I don't think it scratches any easier than any other phone.
6 month old P6P here and it is scratch free.
Somehow, I got a scratch on my screen. It's a small ding and it doesn't bother me, but it's there. I don't use screen protectors, don't like them.
No screen protector but got a case since day 1 in October. No visible scratches.
I noticed micro scratches within the first week - so I am using a screen protection for the first time in my life.

And, factually, it is true that the Pixel 6 Pro scratches quite easily, compared to previous models.
Now, why is that?
The reason is the so-called Gorilla Glass Victus. It's a new product by Corning - a product that is in use in a number of phones, including IPhones. And that's where the interesting part comes in. All Gorilla Glass Victus phones are more prone to (micro) scratches.
Meaning that the Pixel 6 Pro does scratch more easily compared to previous models, but so does any other flagship with Victus glass, currently.
You might ask yourself: Why did Corning release a product that is prone to get scratched more easily? Well, the answer is quite simple: Drop protection. Gorilla Glass Victus is harder to scratch on a deeper level and is much more resistant to drop damage, at least in theory, according to Corning.
In the end, you will be best advised to get a screen protector on. The Pixel 6 Pro is a good phone. I can't call it great, since battery life and reception could both be much better, but you will have a hard time to find a package this good (awesome camera, many software features, timely updates, good root support (Samsung hates root), decent hardware quality, good hardware values on paper) somewhere else. The Pixel 6 Pro is a phone that I can recommend, but it's still a phone that can improve in a number of areas, but so does any other phone.
Considering that the P6a is on the horizon, and it's usually a much better bang for the buck, you might be best advised though, to hold out and wait for that phone (as far as I know, the P6a will be revealed in May).

Scratches at a level 6 with deeper grooves at a level 7 just like all other glass phones...

In my experience, yeah, it scratches really easily.
I've never used screen protectors before, and I baby my phones, but within the first two weeks I had multiple scratches on the screen to the point where I had to put on a screen protector just for my sanity. I'm seriously considering getting the screen replaced entirely because of it.

Same happened to me, I never used screen protectors in the past and I could go several months to a year with very minor scuffs. With the P6 I got a heavy scratch after 3 days.
If you're worried about scratches and want peace of mind just use a screen protector. Glass is glass and will always scratch under the right conditions no matter how much GG hypes it up.
I think the oleophobic coating could be better but scratches are not a problem for me. My release pixel was 4 months without a screen protector and it looked fine, same for my new device after 2 months.
Had mine since mid January, no screen protector...not one scratch. I use a turtleback case. I've never had a screen protector on any of my smartphones. Last phone I had with a protector, was one of those old PDA type phones.
My back glass is COVERED in scuffs and scratches. I'm glad I got the white model because you really do have to inspect it properly to see it
