so I've rooted my OGP. Now what?

Rooted it today. First android phone I've ever owned (though been jailbreaking since 2009).
I installed Ttanium Backup, and i think i backed up my apps and data, but not exactly sure where to, as i don't have an SD card in it yet. If I backed up to the phone, I'm guessing that's mostly useless. But I'm new to this stuff so i don't really know.
So, now that i have root access, what apps should i be installing?
What stuff should i be uninstalling or freezing?
What cool things can i now do that i couldn't do yesterday?
Anything specific to the OGP that i should or should not do?

You can block ads, search adaway here on xda since Google recently rid the store of all ad blocking apps. You can use programs like sqlite editor to enable hotspot even if you're not subscribed to a plan that supports it. You can use xposed framework also here on xda (under our phones themes and apps) to apply themes to the phone. You can disable built in apps using titanium backup. Also, you should install Cwm under android development for our phone and make a nandroid backup in case you ever screw up your phone.
Best of all, you can install greenify root to make your battery last a lot longer. It hibernates apps for you that would normally run in the background.
When we have our bootloader unlocked is when the real fun will start though.

Couple more questions...I was able to do a search for adaway, and found it, but you mention (under our phones themes and apps), and could not find that. Is there a section that just has XDA Apps in it? All I was able to find was forums, and not repositories (don't know if that's the right word).
Basic newbie question...if an app is listed as being for Jellybean 4.1, can we use it even it was made for a Galaxy S3 for example? If it's Jellybean 4.1 is it good to go?
As to adaway...if you disable ads, will some programs refuse to run?
Is the hotspot app, safe for my phone bill?
If you "disable" apps using titanium backup, does it remove them from the phone, or just hide them? What is freezing an app? And if later you want to have them back (let's say for a trip to the cell store) are they readily returned to view?
I was under the impression (probably wrongly) that CWM at this point could brick our phone. Am I mistaken? And where does the nandroid backup get stored? Hopefully not on the phone...
I ask a lot of the above questions as being a new android user (2-weeks now), I'm clicking or checking out everything I see on the phone (and in the store(s) to learn about what it can do. I'm also installing a ton of apps that are new to me, and I've also gone to some non-Google Play stores to DL some stuff. I know that sooner or later I'm going to want to restore the phone to factory stock to get rid of conflicts, viruses (virii?), and anything that does not play well with other stuff. So, during this learning quest, I assume I'm going to frag the phone in some way, and will have the need to return it to stock (hopefully without needing to go back to the store)!!! I just want to have a bit of assurance that with everything I do, I can get back to stock.
Lastly, is there anything somewhat similar to iTunes that will make a restore a bit less time consuming. Is Titanium Backup what I"m searchnig for?

Wasn't aware of greenify root.. will give that one a go right now!

Thanks for mention greenify root, I install it. It's a hit!!

Now that I'm rooted (and installed some associated apps) I've noticed some laggy operation. When I'm on pretty much any of the home screens, and click on the app drawer icon, I'm brought to the page where I see "Apps", "Downloads", and "Widgets" at the top, but occasionally I have a blank screen below that. It stays blank for anywhere from one to three seconds and then the apps and folders appear. Sometimes they will show up instantly, but quite often there is a few second lag. The only things I've installed since rooting are Root Checker, Titanium Backup and Greenify. I'm not sure whether it is the root or the new apps, so I guess I can uninstall the three apps and see.
I also seem to be getting the circling "please wait" message more often than in the past.
Anybody else experiencing this? And does this sound like a root issue or an issue from one of the three apps?

So the Note 4 is actually my first device I've owned where I didn't have an unlocked bootloader. Because of this, I'm not sure whether all the modifications I've made to my past devices were enabled because I had an unlocked bootloader.
The only thing I know we can't do is install custom roms.
So... that leaves me with a question. What kinds of things can we do with just root?
On top of that, I have some specific questions (Might think of more later) :
Will root let us be able to install the auto-brightness control that the international version of the Note 4 has? If you don't know, you're able to adjust how low or high the auto brightness stages will go without turning off auto brightness on that version. It's so much nicer than having to turn off auto, adjust to where you want, and then remember to turn auto back on when you leave that environment.
Can we remap the capacitive multitask button to be a menu button instead? And to remap long-pressing that button to be the new multitask?

I'm assuming that they will. I suppose I should have worded my post different.
So it should have said, if we get safe strap we will be able to have custom roms.
It's not quiet the same as a unlocked bootloader though.

Well regardless of whether we have custom roms through some other means, I'd personally most interested in those 2 questions I stated. That's honestly the things I want most with root at the moment.

Root has not been proven yet. Patience. Everyone is jumping the gun here.

My main and only real reason for wanting root is for Ad Block ESPECIALLY in youtube. I hate those commercials... You can install Ad Block without root (as I just did) but it just doesn't seem to work as well as it did with my last rooted device... Although I'm not sure if this is the app devs getting more creative with how they get ads through or possibly even a Lollipop things...
The other main reason was so Rocket Player could delete podcasts I had already listened too.. That was resolved with the Lollipop update so I am good to go there...
Some really like Root for Titanium backup to back up ALL app data and settings... This was handy for me back when I was flashing ROMS all the time but without that capability I don't see myself having much of a need for that since the games I play store the data in the Android folder which I don't need root to copy/backup
Another great thing that has come about the last year or so is Xposed modules.. These give you just about ANY customization you could possibly want but of course in order to use them you will also need root..... There is a great app that pulls the commercials from Youtube which I will be checking out if Root is actually here... As I said before I hate hate the ads... Not that I don't buy FULL versions of some of the apps if I find them useful because I do... But with things like Chrome and Youtube I really miss the option of them being disabled... Yes I know Firefox has this built in but I like y Chrome for the ability to send pages from my PC to my phone with the click of a button....
I find that the Note 4 with the help of Apex PRO has helped me gain many of the features I once wanted Root and the ability to flash things for... So now I am just looking for the ability to kill some ads....
There are also a few apps I would delete or freeze with Titanium Backup once we had that option... Turning them off is nice but I want the space back...

I'm with you on the adblock and it's one of the things I've been looking forward too also. The ads mobile gets is ridiculous, I'm fine with them on most websites on the computer but the mobile versions really kill some things.
Xposed is an interesting topic to me, I've never had any experience with it since I've never really needed it. It will be fun to see what they do. Thanks for the info.

I want to delete all bloatware, install multi window for all apps, adblock, mxtube downloader, and xposed for 4.4.4

Good point I forgot about being able to add multi window for non supported apps... It would be really nice for Tapatalk to support it

you can remove pre-loaded carrier apps that cause sluggish instability. improve battery life, and speed up application start times.

Mw-pen app enabler, ive been using since i got this phone. Let's you add apps to multi window. Should work for non system apps. It's worked for me. been my solution until we get root, if we do.

Just an fyi: You can disable bloatware without having root by using @gatesjunior's Debloater utility. Here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2998294

knox counter triggered! is there a way to reset it?

After rooting my Note 7, I've noticed that my Knox counter has been triggered, normally I would mind but several apps seem to depend on it to work properly(I can't even open S Health!). Is there away to reset it yet? thanks

Nope. When you root, a physical fuse in the phone is blown, so unless you have epic soldering and mad haxorz skills then you're pretty much screwed

there's not that much you can do with root that you can't do without root, especially on recent high-end Samsung phones.

I am rooted and my S Health works. I believe the only thing that would be permanently disabled is Samsung Pay. Some banking apps will not run if you have root but you can always install an Xposed module called root cloak to circumvent that issue.

S-health is still there, do a search and you can find instructions to access it. You should only lose secure folder and pay, if you want those things you should follow the advice above and not root your replacement phone. I'm not beating you up here but as an FYI you should have known the ramifications of rooting before you rooted, it's best to know what you're in for before you commit to a course of action that may be irreversible.

Sadly depending on what you want not everything is available without rooting.
Unless you can tell me how to change all app dpi individually.

you're mentioning specific root-only apps.
obviously those won't work, but there are alternative methods with (close to) the same results.
adaway: adguard, it's better anyway(doesn't rely on a system designed for no more than 100 rules, easy to toggle on/off, supports whitelisting of apps, supports firewall functionality, and can target not just entire domains but also single lines of code)
adfree YouTube: yes this one is trickier, you'd need a 3rd party YouTube app or the website+adguard to avoid ads.
alternatively you can use "Cygery AdSkip for YouTube" to automatically skip ads after 5 seconds.
as you said, greenify works just not as effective.
similar "power saving" functions however are built in on recent android devices.
and from what I can tell every function in "smart network" except switching to 2G can be achieved without root using tasker.
synapse and per app DPI are the only things on your list that are completely impossible without root(although using game tuner's resolution settings you should be able to influence scaling in some apps)

Also if you use YouTube backgrounder, OGyoutube works great and allows background / downloading of content. I'm still looking for an ad free YouTube but this suffices in the meantime.

do you have the link for it? when I try to open it, it says the following:
"Unable to open app
Because of a new security policy introduced in version 5.0, Knox is not available on compromised devices"
I've already frozen all the knox apps I could find in TB.

strange, I just checked my 2-year old Note 4, the knox has also been triggered awhile ago, but i could use S Health fine. Why would S Health have anything to do with Knox?

S Health may use Knox to protect your health data (HIPAA in the USA).

The S-health thing is new, people are circumventing it by an app that lets you access the widget and from it you can open it up or some such, don't use it so I paid little attention to the fix. Don't remember where I saw that but it's here somewhere shine, I would peruse the development threads, I'm thinking I saw it in one of them.

Do we still need root?

I have been rooting my devices for countless years now, but Iately I found myself wondering why.
So, I decided not to root my S4. So far, so good:
- Blokada works great for ads (and until one month ago AdHell was an even better alternative)
- Tasker does its job as well using Autoinput (obviously, I had to rewrite all my tasks)
- I had given up on Xposed a long time ago, due to Safety Net violations.
In essence, I believe that stock + OTAs + Knox works well and I don't need to root.
Wha are your experiences with no-root workarounds?

Wouldn't bother tbh, S4 rom forum is dead, only been 2/3 roms made!
I use to root all the time, back since I had the first HTC desire.
As of recent i haven't and I'm not missing it, S8+, Tab S4 and Samsung A5.

To make decent backups using TitaniumBackup.
To transfer data to/from the ext. SD card using ssh/scp/rsync.
To disable lots of unneeded/unwanted 'standard' tools.

Root makes you a owner of your gear. Without root the device can do with you whatever.
Firewall, freezing unwanted apps, fighting against Google nosy curiosity. Making sound better with magisk modules.
But Samsung is stupid with their bad strategy, they don't respect warranty if your device is rooted.
Best solution is Xiaomi or OnePlus, but they haven't tablet with such great screen like Samsung galaxy tabs S series

Samsung may not, but according to european legislation the vendor is responsible to provide warranty for an appropriate period of time, at least one year.

Simple answer yes root is need please also note i was well against root i was gutted that i rooted my Tab S4 LTE Model that I rushed into without the research!
But since Samsung gave us the middle finger last month by denying us the KNOX API Key for Adhell 3 root is a must if you truly want to enjoy ad free bloatware free Tab S4 experience!

For simplicity, scp is a network file copy tool and rsync is a network file sync tool. They use ssh as a network protocol.

rooting is a must: bloatware removal, adblocking, privacy, modding, security. you can install dnscrypt, force adguard on vpn and with adaway. you can enable call recording. you can have adfree usable youtube. you can include any app in parallel apps. you can modify the extra button. you can have same gestures on every phone (xposed Edge). you can have Swiftkey improved. you can crystalize agressive apps (3C). you can run your scripts. you can backup (titaniumbackup). all those thousand of settings in hundreds of apps backed up. endless possibilities.

Hi. I haven't had an android device for many years before this tab. Before that, I had a Note 2 on which i used to root and also have different roms running frequently.
I'm also considering rooting my tab s4 for a long time now. Could you share some more detailed about customizations that are available for tab s4 if I'm not willing to go to stock android roms? I'm asking about modifications to the offcial samsung based firmware.

Same here, staying with rooted samsung firmware to enjoy the samsung extras. I will later setup a thread with debloat and list of verified modules to install. Also with a root guide, as i couldn't find one for encryption-only people.. found 10 guides but noone is using encryption. weird!

I've been rooting all my android phones since my first one (galaxy mini) but I stopped rooting after I bought my note 9. Now I only root my backup phones.
Theres just too many good features that I'll miss if I trip my knox.

i think the question alot should research should be:
can i actually root before buying

I keep a rooted phone for certain things.
I don't root my daily drives now though. I think I burned myself out over the years. I prefer a stable, secure phone now.

Every new galaxy phones I got didn't last a week without being rooted. It's my first time to buy a phone on its launching period. Most probably wont get rooted in a week or two, or maybe who knows hahaha.. depends on how our great devs would work on it lol

Secure folder works on rooted too. Still it needs some patch. I have posted screenshot of secure folder yday on my root guide thread. Samsung pay won't. Still trying to work spay on gear, it is working on N8/N9 but yet not able to fix on N10. But I am on holidays and no twrp so cant dig much.

Hey,
I was also a little bit frustrated that Adhell3 didn't work anymore, but I found an alternative that might help you. I am currently using my Note8 with an app called CCSWE App Manager (can be found on the playstore). This app with the coupled with the CCSWE App Manager Pro License (also found on the playstore but paid) app allows to disable packages, it uses KNOX. Not sure if it supports Note10, but works perfectly on my Note8.

I don't care about loosing Knox crap. I will root on day 1 of any device I own. Systemwide add blocking being my #1 reason. Also there is nothing like Titanium backup out there. IMO stock rooted is always great.
