[Q] prerequisites before flashing - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I got HTC Vision phone. It was SIM locked with Gingerbread and I did root according to this instructions, but at first i had to do downgrade back to Froyo according to this instructions. Now I have phone rooted and sim unlocked, but i would like to upgrade back to Gingerbread.
Is it necessary to do some prerequisites before or i should just install Gingerbread from SD card?

No nothing.
If you wan't a really close to original GB rom, you should try Virtuous 2.0.

When i try to install new ROM using ClockworkMod Recovery v5.8.1.0 and confirm installation i have only "No" options, but there is nowhere "Yes" option, also when i want to wipe data i am not able to confirm it because i have only "No" options.
Do you know how it is possible? This is my third android device, but i have never seen this.

Never seen this before either, I suggest flashing a new recovery from fastboot (you will need an updated recovery for KitKat ROMs anyway)
You'll find the latest clockwork and twrp recoveries in the development section here and latest 4ext image will need a Google search

[Q] Flashing back to a stock RUU ROM

OK, sorry for the n00b question, I've only been on Android a couple of days. So, I managed to root my device with unrevoked, and i have the Clokwork recovery on there. I even managed to install a custom ROM which I absolutely love. What I hate is the Telus screen that comes up in the very beginning when you power the phone on. From what I've read, the only way to get rid of that is to flash a stock ROM again. So I downloaded the latest one available (I think it just got posted an hour or two ago), and when i try to install it, everything is fine until the RUU wants to boot into Bootloader. At this point my phone does nothing, and the RUU program enters recovery.
Do I have to reroot my phone somehow? Or maybe clear off the current ROM first? What am I doing wrong? Again, my appologizes for the extreme n00bness.
To return to RUU, u musr copy the rom from a gold card
from my Desire + XDA App
You must use gold card to do that..
from my Desire + XDA App
If it isn't barnded, i know that it is not necesary a gold card. Am i right?
If device isn't branded just download and copy to root of sdcard PB99IMG stock rom image. You can find recovery guides, try search forum.
After you have stock rom, try again...

RE-Lock your bootloader.
Easiest.
Just enter fastboot on your phone then use command prompt and write:
cd..
cd..
cd \fastboot
Then connect phone to cable then type:
'fastboot oem lock'
Edit: Phone must be in fastboot mode before connecting.
And then you will be able to update easily.

ya followed this guide when rooting and installing clockwork recovery...not installed any custom rom yet..just rooted in phone after unlock.
now not able to do ota which has just arrived in india
Help anyone. have relocked thephone now what. tried to do a factory reset from bootloader menu nothing happens .how do I get the phone back in condition newly bght. even clockwork recovery seems to have gone..this is so disappointing
You didn't need to lock the boot loader. Unlock it using the method you used when you unlocked your phone.
All you need to install the ota depends on what state your device is in before you start.
Are you on the stock from or a custom from?
If stock with unlocked boot loader and clockwork mod recovery then all you needed to do was flash the stock recovery reboot and do the ota.
If you were in a custom rom you will have needed to get back to stock from the nandroid backup you took, flashed stock recovery, and stock boot.img. Then reboot to stock and do OTA.

[Q] Need Advice - Stock Desire Unrooted

Ok, I've got a stock Desire (with Three UK) unrooted and I was contemplating on flashing maybe an ICS/JB ROM.
But, I wanted some guidance on what would be the best way to start rooting, etc and any prtions that I need to be wary off.
I'm aware that the Desire does not have a lot of internal memory & did read a few threads on ways the internal storage can be optimised, but am still a little unclear.
I've already read about the unrevoked root process & have downloaded the necessary files. Also, have read on updating the modified USB driver, before rooting through Windows.
Some Guidance would be great ..
If your hboot is 0. 93 or 1. 02 Go to revolutionary.io for one stop solution for rooting/soff.
So, what would be the sequence I need to follow? Would the below sequence be the way to go about?
1. S-Off & Root: I have downloaded the unRevoked Root tool & I believe that it'll also offer S-OFF (Read the guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788044)
2. Before running the unRevoked Root Process, I need to update the Windows HBOOT drivers
3. I believe that the Desire has an internal memory (quite a small one) and my Desire also has an external SD card. I've read a few posts about re-partitioning the internal memory so that there's just enough space for a new ICS/JB Custom ROM, and more space for internal storage. But, I need more simpler info. here.
4. Do I have to update the radio as my Desire still have the 2/3 year old one??
5. Finally, I know how to flash a custom ROM, as I've done it several times on my other phone, Desire HD. I gained root & s-off on the DHD using the AAHK hit.
Unrevoked doesn't s-off. What's your hboot version?
To partition your sd-card properly, use 4ext recovery.

I don't have the phone right now with me as my sister is using it. I can check the HBOOT once I get the phone in a couple of hours.
I've just created a CD disk of GParted (Using ISO) and was planning to use that to create the partitions.
Where can I check for the latest radio for the phone..?
EDIT: Planning to follow this guide, step by step ..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
Is it too old a guide a to follow, and will my HBOOT version determine the route that I'd need to take?
Have you tried going to recoverympde

I will get the HBOOT version once I get the Phone in a couple of hours.
Other Info I managed to get from my sister over the phone:
Android: 2.2.2
Baseband: 32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14
Kernel: 2.6.32.15
Build Number: 2.29.771.3CL345089
Software Number: 2.29.771.3
So, I see that there's a newer radio (5.17.05.23) .. Should I go ahead and Flash it? Will it Offer any improvements? Also, I'm in the UK with Three Mobile, does that matter?? i.e is the radio location specific??
na, the radio is the same for all. most devs roms these days say that u must have latest radio so ya mite aswell flash it. the best way to flash it is using fastboot commands, u can look at the guide in my sig and learn about that or if u have the older version of Clockworkmod Recovery (2.5.0.7) installed u cant just flash it like a normal zip file.

Ok, will flash the latest radio through Fastboot ..
So, the Desire Upgrade project commences tonight
ROOT, S-OFF, RECOVERY, GPARTED PARTITION, RADIO, and finally, JB ROM. Can't wait ..
EDIT: Any recommendations on a Stable JB ROM?
I'm looking at maybe the Evervolv or the MIUI or the CM10 4.1.2 one .. Some suggestions / feedback would help ..

It says "beta" for a reason...
Ok, Im' stuck right now.
I tried to root using UnRevoked 3.32 and it failed gaining root, with a message that maybe a newer firmware.
I then tried revolutionary.io one and it successfully managed to S-OFF & installed CWM recovery 4.x.x . Then I move the Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip to the SD card to flash from recovery, to gain root.
But, when I get into CWM recovery, I see all the options but when I select any option all I see is the splash screen with 'revolutionary'. When I hit the power button I am returned to the menu. Only a battery pull gets me out
Need help now as I have S-OFF and No Root. By the way, I also tried another guide to 'root branded devices' and have converted my SD card to a Gold Card successfully. But, the guide doesn't explain how I can gain root after that ..

Are you pressing the trackball to select options within recovery? (Eventually I would recommend switching to 4ext touch recovery, much better and more intuitive)
You only need to flash the zip to root your current Rom, and install root apps like titanium to backup apps and data.
If you have nothing to backup you can already full wipe and install a custom Rom of your choice, because they will come pre-rooted
In terms of getting some much needed memory back what worked for me on my old Desire was to partition my SDcard and install S2e. This was on the CM7 rom but you get the idea...
If you say JB, there will be no recommendation.
If you say otherwise, a lots of options will be there.
You are using froyo. Why don't you go for GB? There are a lots of good ROMs out there.

No need for doing S-OFF since this version of bootloader can be unlocked without it. If you really need it for something, the only solution I've seen so far is using XTC Clip device, google it.
First backup everything you'll need later using some backup app, unlocking will require factory reset.
Go to HTC dev and unlock your bootloader, a bit lengthy procedure, but not so hard, just follow the instructions on site.
http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
After your bootloader is unlocked, get Clockworkmod recovery for your phone from
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Use fastboot command you have used in unlocking phase to flash recovery. Phone should be connected via USB, in hboot mode, fastboot option chosen, drivers installed on PC, but you should learn all those details during unlocking phase. Command should look like:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img
Now you can enter Clockworkmod recovery by entering HBOOT and selecting recovery option. Get familiar with it
Now,
1) If you just wish to root your phone, nothing else, use CWM recovery to install this zip
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=672519&d=1312136127
It will add Root access app to your phone.
2) Since you worked hard, you deserve better than this. Install newer and more awesome ROMs using CWM recovery
I've tried Cyanogenmod 7,9 and 10, few MIUI versions, WildChild 3.3, and one AOKP version so far, using Oliver96's CM 10 ALPHA2 build at the moment, needed a lot of effort (SD partitioning, installing custom Google Apps, various tricks to get more space on /system, etc), but now I have Android 4.1 and everything works as charm

[Q] HTC ONE X custom rom problem

Hi everyone,
Recently I have bought used htc one x, and apparently it had already installed custom rom on it, ROM is Android Revolution HD 21.0 by mike 1986.
And now I want to update to new jelly bean 4.2.2 with sense 5.0.
but problem is that i dont have requsted unlock code.bin from Htc dev .
I just want to upgrade my phone to 4.2.2 with sense 5.0, but now im lost and dont know how, because phone was bought with preinstalled custom rom.
can I at least get back to official firmware and then update to 4.2.2 with OTA?
it seems like I cant upgrade to android revolution HD 31.0 without unlockcode.bin?
what do you suggest, what should I do? Im completly lost.
thanks in advance

You already have an unlocked bootloader AND custom recovery if you have a custom ROM.
You download and flash the ARHD v31 Sense 5 ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1562603 and flash that.
Plenty instructions on the forum on how.
yes thanks for your reply, but problem is that in one step from tutorial i need to have unlockcode.bin from htcdev, which I dont have because I bought the phone already unlocked and with custom rom.
sorry for noobish questions

Yes that would be the step involving unlocking your bootloader in order to flash a custom recovery etc. You already have these things.
If you restart into bootloader using Power + Vol. Down, at the top of the white screen does it say Unlocked or Relocked?
If it says Unlocked, you do NOT need unlockcode.bin and you skip that step in the tutorial.
it says unlocked...
ok I will download ARHD 31.0 and try...
can I use recovery manager or ROM manager for flashing with new ARHD 31? or you can suggest me one?
thanks
You need to put the rom on your sd card.
Flash the boot in in fastboot then flash the rim zip in recovery.

ok i downloaded required files (flashboot.img and androidrevolutionhd....zip)
because my phone is already rooted, and has custom rom on it, do I follow only these steps, or I have to watch on CID and Hboot :/?
1. Turn OFF the device
2. Turn ON the device in bootloader mode (hold power + vol down)
3. Enter fastboot mode using navigation keys
4. Connect the device to PC via USB cable
5. If you are running Windows OS then double click on 'install-boot-windows.bat'. If you are running Linux or Mac OS then select 'install-boot-linux.sh' or 'install-boot-mac.sh'
6. Done, now enter recovery and flash Android Revolution HD ROM
Make sure boot.img is in fastboot folder and rom is on your phone sd card
1) Boot into bootloader
2) Open cmd prompt in fastboot (on pc)
3) fastboot erase cache
4) fastboot flashboot boot.img
5) fastboot erase cache
6) Reboot into recovery and flash the rom (full wipe clean install)
Reboot and enjoy.
