[Q] Rear camera lens glass? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've Just upgraded to the HTC One m8 last week from a HTC One x, loving it so far :good:
One thing I wondered was what type of glass is the rear camera lenses made from, don't suppose it's gorilla glass at last is it?
all it takes is a tiny scratch on it in the middle and that's the end of good photos, every mobile with a camera i've had to date has ended up with poor photo quality due to scratches.
I wish they fitted a metal shutter to cover it really, but gorilla glass like used on the front screen would help i bet.

I can't find any info on what type of glass it is, I was wondering myself. I just cut out a small piece of plastic and set it between the case and the phone to cover the lenses.
It hasn't affected picture quality that I've noticed. But if it ever gets scratch I can just change out the piece of plastic.
I don't see why HTC would put such a big circle for a small camera lens.

yeah i wondered that to, It's placed where my fingers go each time i pull it out my pocket to, the lens just gets finger prints all over it.
I was looking at all the cases to see if any have a shutter to close over it but no luck so far.

Wouldn't that be to capture more light in the lens ?

Just get a cheap screen protector a cut out a circle ?
But then agian, the glass is recessed in the housing i don't see how you would scratch it like that in the first place

[FIXED] Camera lens blurred

Hi guys, just noticed that my DZ camera lens is "blurred" out bad (I don't use my phone's cam regularly). It looks like scratches, see photos, but its more like coating wear off. I've seen disassembly photos, and it seems that the lens is glued to the back housing, which costs $89.99! Any suggestions to solve this problem? Thanks!
Are you able to get a replacement from your carrier for free?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Um, carrier, no, but warranty is still available, but I read in the warranty statement that scratches or cracks on lens are not covered.

Try ti check ebay and see what u can find. If not and all fails, get some plastic x ploish. And rub it on there. I used that stuff for my headlights, ipod and some other clear plastic stuff. It always worked out great.
The stuff is called plastic x its about $5 from walmart

Thanks for the tip. EBay doesn't seem to have the back housing, however I found one at HTCrepairparts.com for $89.90. I'll try to visit the service center, and hopefully get it fixed, with the right words (got my touch fixed that way ). If all else fails, i'll try looking for that polish. Thanks!

Just got back my Desire Z from servicing, and its beautiful, they totally changed the back lens, which included the back housing! Awesome, no more smudges now!
toothpaste
I had the same problem with my HTC G2, with the camera so scratched all my pics were blurred. I fixed it pretty cheaply by polishing the lens with a little bit of toothpaste! 2 mins of rubbing with toothpaste and a little bit of cardboard and 95% of the lens is clear again and scratch free. My pics are sharp and in focus again. I have a few minor marks around the edge still as they are hard to reach, but they are not affecting the picture or focusing.
Hope this helps somebody

Is this a joke, toothpaste? Come on guys. Should have gone with Squaretrade.
Tooth paste has mild abrasive in it. This isn't a joke and really does work.

hey guys i am going to buy new replacement back for only $14 problem is you have to spend at least $50 because its for wholesalers i just need one anyone want to buy some off me through ebay or paypal so im not stuck with the extras because of the 50 dollar limit. heres the link http://www.mengtor.com/product_show.php?category=668&pid=3365
Hi reeshmd,
I'm very interested in getting a new back cover.
However, i have three questions:
1. Is it original one? Because the price seems too low, and this part must fit perfectly!
2. To change it, we need to void warranty, or not? One screw is covered with a "VOID" sticker.
3. There seems to be 2 different versions of the cover (A & B), how do you know which one to get?
Thanks.
--------
About the scratches itself (i have exactly the same thing as first post pictures show), it looks to me more like some coverage is gone, which probably filtered UVA&B and/or IR light. I say that because not only my pictures are blured now, but also they always look completely over exposed.
--------
Could anyone send a very clear zoomed picture of the camera glass in perfect shape? The same pics as the ones of the first post, but of a new DZ or G2.
Thanks

That is working BIG THX man
My camera lens had similar problems too. I tried toothpaste and now my pictures are brilliant! Thank you for the tip
One question though, is the plastic cover coated therefore there was scratches or was the "scratches" just dirt? I'm wondering if rubbing with toothpaste would rub-off the coating (if there was one to begin with)

There is a coating, and it would have reduced flare/glares, however if it was so grimmy to begin with, the coating was going to go one way or another. But least without it the contracts is quite a bit higher than default.
I used Plastic Booster (a cleaner for plastic food containers) to clean the plastic cover on my old Shadow camera before and it made quite a difference. I think mine was due to just sweat/dirt that discolored the plastic and made everything blurry.

Mine camera thingy is getting scratchy too.
Can I just remove it?

Scrathes on de camera lens!!!

hi every1,
i have had this phone for over a month...but jus today i realised i have scratced my camera lens screen...is it a normal thing????n how to protect it in future...
Thanks to all in advance!!!!
To the op, there are various threads related to this already. Scratches will happen unfortunately. I suggest a screen cover or case if you want extra protection.
Btw, come on you baggies!

Yup, perfectly normal. The camera enclosure was very poorly designed. You'll need to get a case that has a lens protector or make your own I'm afraid. Mines pretty damn scratched already, I've started resting it on the edge of things so that the camera part hangs over the edge and isn't touching anything. Far and away the most irritating thing about this phone!
Get a cover or cover it with some scotch tape
rock is selling screen protector that comes with camera protection
I wonder why don't they just put Gorilla glass on the camera window. All my previous phones always met with this problem however hard I try to protect the camera. Even ones with a camera window cover (e.g. the Nokia N95 8GB from a long time ago), because the cover itself also becomes the source of scratch.
Are the scratches visible in the pics? Cause as long as its not, affecting the quality of the pic I don't care. Also mine had a nasty scratch but its not on the center of the lens

not really.i mean i haven't noticed any change in the quality of the pics...so i think its better to get it protected before it starts messing around the pic quality!!!!

Keyboard vibration & camera lens glass

Evening guys.
I just wanted to know if anyone else has this problem. The vibration on the stock keyboard on my hox is very strong, I suppose it feels like the whole phone is rattling, volume rocker etc. I've used my friends HTC one x, and his seems 'firm' and not as powerful - basically how it should be.
Also the piece of glass that is meant to protrude the camera lens moves. I put my thumb over it earlier and applied the tiniest bit of pressure and the glassed moved in but then came back out. I also noticed that the actual camera lens isn't centered its more offset to the right hand side.
Are these normal, only had the phone for 3 months.
Thank you in advance.
Cheers

For me, I'd consider that faulty. My OneX camera glass is attached firmly. Return to seller.

The vibration I guess is having problems but the glass lens "problem" you mentioned is normal ... Everyone has it ...

Returned the device and have had it swapped. They said that the camera is loose as it was also miss aligned. The glass on the camera is meant to protrude the back of the camera lip a little - not be pushed back into the device...

I had a spare One X housing and I wanted to paint it High gloss black. The lens just popped out when I pushed it out. You will have to remove the back housing.

I think that work. I'm gonna buy too maybe. My photos now are blurry and no focus.
I suspect this is a screen out job to fit. Anyone tried?

Mine is still fine, so I won't have to change it by now.
But I assume that you might just use the little plastic lens instead of the whole ring so screen out wouldn't be needed
I just ordered the eBay lens and round frame only. My lens actually has a crack in it (if yours is just scratched, it can generally be buffed out). Before I ordered it, I tried prying along the LED flash to see if I could get the current one to lift up. Going slowly and carefully around the perimeter, I popped off the current lens cover. It can be done, and is sure a heckuva lot easier than removing the entire back housing.
How you do?

Hey Clitoridys,
Can you please explain what kind of glass you used for this and what scissors? Did you have to paste the new glass lens into place?
My hox+ lens is slowly getting fkd more so everyday and I'd like to replace with glass rather than plastic.

Any screen protectors without holes

Can anyone recommend a good quality dry screen protector without holes. Holes just collect dirt and debris.
I don't care if the sensor is affected as I use manual brightness control. I don't care if the front camera is affected, I don't really use it, besides a transparent sheet will obstruct the lense less than dirt and debris.

Really does that work well? Cut it with an exacto blade using a template drawing? Any tips to avoiding rough corners or peeling?

I never tried. A single hole for both camera and sensor doesn't bother me.
A guy at my work cuts his own and it looks like garbage. The Official Asus has the least holes (2) that I've found. Most others have one over the notification led.
Spigen is updating theirs to only have 1 over the camera.
Official ones come in a 2 pack (matte and glossy).

Since when? I just ordered mine and I should be getting them today. I hope mine only has two....
As of the second batch.
If you check their website the current images show only the camera and sensor.
They shipped me a set of 'corrected' ones on Monday.

Crap, lol. I think I might have ordered too early then. I hope not.
EDIT: I still wish they would get rid of the LED cutout. That's pointless.
Just email them. They'll take care of it.
Wish granted.... That's exactly what they did.
Camera and sensor are the only 2 openings.
