I didn't feel like browsing through a ton of pages on the rumrunner forum. And I'm posting this in the Q&A section as this is a question.
Has rumrunner been updated to work with the Verizon HTC One with OTA 4.4.2? I am aware that I probably should have rooted before I accepted the OTA 4.4.2 update, but if I knew that it'd be awhile before I was able to root, I would've rooted and installed a 4.4.2 stock ROM.
Thanks.

No it has not and it mostly likely will not untill August.
In the same vein...
In the same vein, does anyone know if Firewater is supposed to work with the same version (4.4.2, Hboot 1.56)? I haven't had any luck, but I'm not sure if that's because of my set up or just because it's not supported.

it wont work, the temp root that firewater uses was patched int he 4.4.2 release.
for firewater to work we need an unlocked bootloader from HTC (which VZW asked nicely to remove)
Going to have to wait for another exploit to surface.

Yeah I've tried every thing and nothing works, I got my HTC One exchanged a couple of weeks ago because the one I had just shut off and fried itself, I got the new one with 4.3 not realizing that it was actually rootable and I ended up taking the 4.4.2 update since I figured it wouldnt matter, sucks I was wrong and now have to wait quite a while as well. shame that something is there but they are waiting almost 5 months to do anything with it, but what can you do?
What ticks me off the most is Verizon, every other carrier has no issues with rooting the HTC One, why does Verizon care? I'll just never get it, its our fault and we void the warranty and we know this, other carriers know this and dont care, why Verizon WHY?

you could do what I'm leaning forward to doing, just call verizon and say that you have a purple camera tint problem and its really annoying, they should send u a refurbished one free or charge. of course, you have to send your current one in but it's not like they check or anything so it's pretty much full proof. got many refurbished phones that way, but it was not to get 4.3 or any other "rootable" software.the phones actually had problems.

this plan has worked for some members here. remember to tell them that you would not like them to update the software because that was the root cause to the purple tint ( not the truth but they will honor your request)

are you running the temp-root method? weak sauce is the "temp-root" therefore you should be using the normal method of firewater s-off

I've tried both methods, with weak sauce and without it using the temproot method. So far, no Bueno.
Think it would make a difference if I reset my device to factory? Maybe I've messed with it too much for these simple processes to work?

People have been asking almost everyday for an unlock method in the Galaxy S4 forums for about 9 months now with no luck so unfortunately asking doesn't seem to get any better results
I don't know why but after I upgraded (OTA) to 4.4 my phone is now unlocked and S-Off. My contract was up a week earlier and I called regarding an unlock token but was told I needed to have a third party do it. Totally contrary to the Agreement the 4 majors had with the gov't in December over unlocking phones when contracts were up. So I'm just hanging out waiting for one of the resident masters to figure out a root.

If you're unlocked and s-off all you need to do is flash a recovery like TWRP and then flash a prerooted rom (most are pre rooted). It's the getting S-off part that many are still waiting to get figured out. You're free to flash away.

I'd be up for someone creating a general Q&A for this phone. It would have helped me quite a bit when I was just starting. I know enough to get one started but I'd feel better if I could get more experienced people contributing to it.
Can I just root without flashing for now

Ya, I think you can just flash a superuser.zip in recovery (you will need to flash a recovery first. Either TWRP or CWM...I prefer TWRP). It's been awhile, but I know it's not hard. There used to be a little tutorial in OP of the Rumrunner thread on how to gain root but I'm not sure if it's there anymore.

Hi all,
I’ve searched around on a few forums for this but haven’t found a direct answer. I received my M8 on Wednesday and promptly unlocked the bootloader.*Then, like an idiot, I took the 1.54 OTA and proceeded to install TWRP/root, completely forgetting to do S-Off.
I tried the Firewater method last night several times with no success. I got the standard “whelp, this sucks…” failure message. In case it matters, I’m on the Sprint M8, but I decided to post here since the Firewater method appeared to have success with almost all variants.
ROM: rooted stock
Android 4.4.2
Sense 6.0
Kernel version 3.4.0-g255057cd
Software version: 1.54.651.8
Thanks!

As far as I'm aware version doesn't matter.
At least from what I read of the thread from when I was trying to S-Off my own. I must have tried a good 20/30 times to get mine to work. In the end I did the trick, whereby you drop a file, like a ROM or Video file (Something large) while Firewater does it business. This made mine work almost instantly, even after so many fails.
Warning: Apparently the above method could cause damage to your device.
I had issues but i think it was hw related. i have a new device. made in taiwan. got soff first try without moving files. now i just need to find thread on how to remove tampered

actually. i unlocked device with htcdev. installed phils recovery. installed SU and used stock with SuperSU installed and followed instructions at firewater site. i had very small hopes but it worked. so my wild guess is that chinamade phones like my previous was will not work due to the hardware. cause i tried with several. all made in china. this made in taiwan worked first time. flawless.

S-off isn't currently compatible with all M8s, as it seems yours Isn't at present.

I saw several folks that were having this issue as well on Sprint thread. I got my Sprint device last night and while I didn't take the update I did chronicle the steps I took and had no issues getting s-off.
Ultimately you might try different methods of root. I just loaded ViperOne right out of the box, while it is my preferred ROM I also read in the Sprint forums that one of the MODs wasn't able to get it to work with some of the other rooted ROMs so I just started there.
While you've done the update all may not be lost. I'd try a couple different rooted ROMs, do full wipes, and see if you can make it work.

Just be sure to read and totally comply with prerequisites and it will happen on your first run.

i think if you ask Jcase nicely, he might give you another license if you have to RMA the phone again. dont quote me on that but it wouldnt hurt to ask him.
I recently RMA'd my m7 through Verizon. The replacement m7 has sense 6, the newest version of software on it.
On my previous device I also had sense 6 and I was able to temp root the device using the towel root method by changing the string as stated in the procedure. (changing the last digit to a 1)
On the replacement device I have tried multiple times to get the towel root to work but no dice. The program acknowledges the string and I receive the device is rooted prompt but none of the root checking programs or titanium backup recognizes the phone as root. A second attempt causes the phone to reboot.
This may cause problems for me and any other users that have a phone that was replaced. If the temp root does not work it may not succeed with sunshine.

The latest update of sunshine claims to not need towel root as it is supposed to temp root on its own now.
I'm sitting here with my Verizon HTC One on the "Software update ready to install" screen. I'm not sure if I should select "Install Later" or "Install Now". I guess my main question is, has there been any indication that someone will come up with a workable root solution for the M7 with the OTA KitKat update? I know there isn't one for Jellybean.
Sorry if this is a n00b question. If it has been asked and answered before, please point me in the direction of the thread. Thanks!
Edit: I see a couple of folks have asked about this in the Q&A forum (where I probably should have, heh). Mods, please delete.

Is there anything I can do besides paying for sunshine? I don't mind paying, but I figured with the older software there might be something that would work.

Right, definitely worth a shot since you're still on 4.4.2. I know firewater has been discontinued, so give rumrunner a shot. If not, go with sunshine. Saves alotta time n is just a 1-click method.

I was on 4.4.2 when I first went s-off using weaksauce/firewater without any problems. I know that OTA version had been patched for Rumrunner already and I was unable to use it. Maybe there is an older version of firewater out there? I'm sure that one of the later ones should work with 4.4.2 still since the OTA hasn't been applied to the OP's phone. It's strange that they would no longer even have the downloads for the older versions of it after discontinuing it...
OP, you really have absolutely no computer access to save the $25 for sunshine? You would still have to use one to flash TWRP and root anyway, even after getting s-off.

No version of Firewater Will work. It relied on an online resource server that has since been shut down. So even on the phones that Firewater WOULD'VE worked on, it won't anymore..

No pc at all. I have a Mac for work.
I have temp root with weaksauce. I planned to use sunshine in a couple days once I figure out if this battery will last until the summer.
I planned to temp root with weaksauce for sunshine, pay and use sunshine and then use flashify to flash a recovery. Am I wrong in assuming this process should work fine?
I miss aosp and need dt2w coming from my g2

That's EXACTLY how I rooted mine back when I was on 4.4.2. Except I couldn't get Sunshines Temproot to stick so I used towelroot. But in a nutshell, yes your theory will work. Did for me and no problems half a year later...
In case I need to go that route.. Hope do you use towel root with the one? I thought it was unsupported?

That plan does make sense if your temp root with weaksauce works nicely with flashify. I have only used it to flash recoveries within a permanently rooted ROM so I have no idea if you might encounter problems using it when your root access is only temporary. Hopefully it works but a couple things you might want to consider are that flashing updated firmware still does require a PC. Maybe there is a Mac version of the android SDK where you can use the adb/fastboot commands, but unfortunately whenever the updated firmware from OTA versions get posted in these forums, they are not recovery flashable. The other thing is that the M7 doesn't have a secondary processor to handle wake gestures. There are custom kernels on here that have tap to wake and such, but they do tend to consume battery charge faster than without.

Thanks for the information. Bummer about the screen and dt2w.
Maybe I should just wait on this. It's looking like it's tougher than I imagined it would be. I think i might need to read more to get requainted with this phone and stuff.

For D2W , etc. I'm using elementalx kernel, and not only is battery life better, but the screen wake gestures r more reliable than even on the m8. I've seen ppl complain about how they stop working on the m8, well I've been running Elemental x for half a year and no problems. As far as the Temp Root method with flashify , it's not really any more of a risk than if u used flashify on a Perm rooted device. Because even when u have temp root, u STILL have Root. Only difference is that on temp root, root is reinstalled on reboot. Like I said, I did it this way over half a year ago n no problem what so ever . Because I had no access to a pc either.

Also technically u CAN take an ota even after rooted and stuff, all without pc, the only issue will be getting root again. Just flash stock odex Rom, then use flashify to flash stock recovery back on, take ota, PROFIT..... BUT- if u do that, u run the risk of not being able to get root until u find a pc again because as we all know, Ota's remove root, n chances r , it'll b harder to gain temp root after an ota

Doesn't taking the OTA with stock recovery/stock rom lock the bootloader back up?
Also which elementalx kernel are you using? I didn't see a new one for the newest stock version in the forum(maybe I just missed it) and their own web page doesn't specify if those kernels are for GSM, VZW or carrier agnostic.

Nope. U can lose root, but once u unlock your Bootloader and S-off, nothing can change that unless u manually re-lock and turn S-on again, (NOTE- ONCE S-OFF, NEVER TURN S BACK ON UNLESS FOR WARRANTY/RETURN PURPOSES AND NOT UNLESS U KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING)
