What is sunshine and will it work? - Verizon HTC One (M7)

So I sent in my one for repair and got it back with bootloader locked and s-on. Just recently though I saw this sunshine apk. What is the official link and is it actually $25 dollars? Does it work on the latest update? Does it s-off and unlock the bootloader? I want to to double check all of this before spending $25..Thanks!

Yes to all the questions. It is $25 per device, so if you get a replacement again, it still be another $25

It works like a charm. Be all stock, backup your pics, and do a factory reset before you start.
Just be sure to read and totally comply with prerequisites and it will happen on your first run.
Done 2 of them without a hitch.

i think if you ask Jcase nicely, he might give you another license if you have to RMA the phone again. dont quote me on that but it wouldnt hurt to ask him.

I recently RMA'd my m7 through Verizon. The replacement m7 has sense 6, the newest version of software on it.
On my previous device I also had sense 6 and I was able to temp root the device using the towel root method by changing the string as stated in the procedure. (changing the last digit to a 1)
On the replacement device I have tried multiple times to get the towel root to work but no dice. The program acknowledges the string and I receive the device is rooted prompt but none of the root checking programs or titanium backup recognizes the phone as root. A second attempt causes the phone to reboot.
This may cause problems for me and any other users that have a phone that was replaced. If the temp root does not work it may not succeed with sunshine.

The latest update of sunshine claims to not need towel root as it is supposed to temp root on its own now.

HTC One 4.4.2 OTA rumrunner?

I didn't feel like browsing through a ton of pages on the rumrunner forum. And I'm posting this in the Q&A section as this is a question.
Has rumrunner been updated to work with the Verizon HTC One with OTA 4.4.2? I am aware that I probably should have rooted before I accepted the OTA 4.4.2 update, but if I knew that it'd be awhile before I was able to root, I would've rooted and installed a 4.4.2 stock ROM.
Thanks.

No it has not and it mostly likely will not untill August.
In the same vein...
In the same vein, does anyone know if Firewater is supposed to work with the same version (4.4.2, Hboot 1.56)? I haven't had any luck, but I'm not sure if that's because of my set up or just because it's not supported.

it wont work, the temp root that firewater uses was patched int he 4.4.2 release.
for firewater to work we need an unlocked bootloader from HTC (which VZW asked nicely to remove)
Going to have to wait for another exploit to surface.

Yeah I've tried every thing and nothing works, I got my HTC One exchanged a couple of weeks ago because the one I had just shut off and fried itself, I got the new one with 4.3 not realizing that it was actually rootable and I ended up taking the 4.4.2 update since I figured it wouldnt matter, sucks I was wrong and now have to wait quite a while as well. shame that something is there but they are waiting almost 5 months to do anything with it, but what can you do?
What ticks me off the most is Verizon, every other carrier has no issues with rooting the HTC One, why does Verizon care? I'll just never get it, its our fault and we void the warranty and we know this, other carriers know this and dont care, why Verizon WHY?

you could do what I'm leaning forward to doing, just call verizon and say that you have a purple camera tint problem and its really annoying, they should send u a refurbished one free or charge. of course, you have to send your current one in but it's not like they check or anything so it's pretty much full proof. got many refurbished phones that way, but it was not to get 4.3 or any other "rootable" software.the phones actually had problems.

this plan has worked for some members here. remember to tell them that you would not like them to update the software because that was the root cause to the purple tint ( not the truth but they will honor your request)

are you running the temp-root method? weak sauce is the "temp-root" therefore you should be using the normal method of firewater s-off

I've tried both methods, with weak sauce and without it using the temproot method. So far, no Bueno.
Think it would make a difference if I reset my device to factory? Maybe I've messed with it too much for these simple processes to work?

Vzw(4.4.2) - s off without a pc?

I had to reactivate my m7 after my g2 took a hit fixing a door today.
I'm running 4.4.2 still and I was able to get root with weaksauce. I do not have a pc to run rumrunner like when I did a while ago.
Is there anything I can do besides paying for sunshine? I don't mind paying, but I figured with the older software there might be something that would work.
Anybody got any help im having an unusually difficult time finding a straight answer

Without a pc, the ONLY way is sunshine. Every other way involves pc, and 9 times outta 10, even WITH a pc, sun shines STILL all that'll work.
And the only way to do this is to pay 25$?

Right, definitely worth a shot since you're still on 4.4.2. I know firewater has been discontinued, so give rumrunner a shot. If not, go with sunshine. Saves alotta time n is just a 1-click method.

I was on 4.4.2 when I first went s-off using weaksauce/firewater without any problems. I know that OTA version had been patched for Rumrunner already and I was unable to use it. Maybe there is an older version of firewater out there? I'm sure that one of the later ones should work with 4.4.2 still since the OTA hasn't been applied to the OP's phone. It's strange that they would no longer even have the downloads for the older versions of it after discontinuing it...
OP, you really have absolutely no computer access to save the $25 for sunshine? You would still have to use one to flash TWRP and root anyway, even after getting s-off.

No version of Firewater Will work. It relied on an online resource server that has since been shut down. So even on the phones that Firewater WOULD'VE worked on, it won't anymore..

No pc at all. I have a Mac for work.
I have temp root with weaksauce. I planned to use sunshine in a couple days once I figure out if this battery will last until the summer.
I planned to temp root with weaksauce for sunshine, pay and use sunshine and then use flashify to flash a recovery. Am I wrong in assuming this process should work fine?

That plan does make sense if your temp root with weaksauce works nicely with flashify. I have only used it to flash recoveries within a permanently rooted ROM so I have no idea if you might encounter problems using it when your root access is only temporary. Hopefully it works but a couple things you might want to consider are that flashing updated firmware still does require a PC. Maybe there is a Mac version of the android SDK where you can use the adb/fastboot commands, but unfortunately whenever the updated firmware from OTA versions get posted in these forums, they are not recovery flashable. The other thing is that the M7 doesn't have a secondary processor to handle wake gestures. There are custom kernels on here that have tap to wake and such, but they do tend to consume battery charge faster than without.

For D2W , etc. I'm using elementalx kernel, and not only is battery life better, but the screen wake gestures r more reliable than even on the m8. I've seen ppl complain about how they stop working on the m8, well I've been running Elemental x for half a year and no problems. As far as the Temp Root method with flashify , it's not really any more of a risk than if u used flashify on a Perm rooted device. Because even when u have temp root, u STILL have Root. Only difference is that on temp root, root is reinstalled on reboot. Like I said, I did it this way over half a year ago n no problem what so ever . Because I had no access to a pc either.

Also technically u CAN take an ota even after rooted and stuff, all without pc, the only issue will be getting root again. Just flash stock odex Rom, then use flashify to flash stock recovery back on, take ota, PROFIT..... BUT- if u do that, u run the risk of not being able to get root until u find a pc again because as we all know, Ota's remove root, n chances r , it'll b harder to gain temp root after an ota

Doesn't taking the OTA with stock recovery/stock rom lock the bootloader back up?
Also which elementalx kernel are you using? I didn't see a new one for the newest stock version in the forum(maybe I just missed it) and their own web page doesn't specify if those kernels are for GSM, VZW or carrier agnostic.

Nope. U can lose root, but once u unlock your Bootloader and S-off, nothing can change that unless u manually re-lock and turn S-on again, (NOTE- ONCE S-OFF, NEVER TURN S BACK ON UNLESS FOR WARRANTY/RETURN PURPOSES AND NOT UNLESS U KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING)

[ROOT] New Root method & BL Unlock for 5.0.x!!! OTA Supported!!!

Hey all,
For starters, disclaimer:
I am not responsible for thermonuclear war, bricks, and or your parents grounding you for said brick.
This method is VERY finicky, and very hard to reproduce. I cannot promise anything. It worked for me.
You need to download the following apks:
- KingRoot (Newest available on kingroot.net)
- KingUser (Newest available on kingroot.net)
- SunShine (3.0+, available @ theroot.ninja)
Once you have downloaded all of these apk files, follow the below steps:
1. Go to Settings ==> Security ==> Check "Allow Installation of Apps from Unknown Sources" and agree to the prompt.
2. Go to Settings ==> About ==> Software Info ==> Tap "Build Number" 12 Times.
3. Go to Settings ==> Developer Options ==> Check "USB Debugging"
4. Now install all the APK files by clicking on them.
5. Ensure you are connected to a reliable WiFI network.
6. Ensure you have Location Services/GPS and High Accuracy turned on in Settings.
7. Open KingRoot and select "Try to Root" when prompted.
8. Now, wait for it to complete. We don't expect KingRoot to succeed! We only expect it to display a prompt and then fail! If it reboots, you need to reopen KingRoot and try again.
Keep closing (through your Recent Apps Menu) and re-opening/re-running KingRoot until you get a prompt that says "Google cannot verify this app, would you like to Install KingUser?" click "Install" any similar message will work, i.e. "Google recommends you not install this app, would you like to install KingUser?" but a similar message must display, if it doesn't display, re-run KingRoot.
9. After the message goes away, and KingRoot fails, close the app, and open KingUser.
10 Verify that KingUser says you are rooted.
At this point, you are temp-rooted. You cannot write to the /System partition. You can only use apps that don't require /System access (very few).I recommend you cough up the $25 for SunShine. Only follow the instructions from here if you have $25 and want to unlock your boot loader, go S-OFF, and get Permanent Root & R/W /System Access.
11. Now, open SunShine and follow the on screen prompts, grant it SU access when prompted. It will reboot (Do not re-open SunShine as instructed after reboot!!!).
12. Repeat the steps 7-9 outlined above to re-gain temp-root.
13. NOW re-Open Sunshine and follow the on-screeen prompts.
Congrats! You are S-OFF, Unlocked, and your warranty bit returns an "OFFICIAL" status in bootloader mode. Now to install TWRP.
14. Download TWRP from here: http://android.cmphys.com/twrp-m7vzw/ ON YOUR PC/MAC/LINUX BOX
Make sure to use this and not the stock TWRP build! The stock TWRP build doesn't have full Lollipop encryption support (as of 5/29/15).
15. Reboot to bootloader with the volume buttons, or use ADB to reboot to bootloader.
16. Plug your phone into your PC and verify you see it when you run "fastboot devices" from CMD/Terminal.
17. Run "fastboot flash recovery /pathtotwrpimghere/nameoftwrpimg.img".
18. Run the volume buttons to select "Recovery".
19. Download the flashable SuperSU .zip for 2.46 and transfer it to your phone while in TWRP.
20. Install the SuperSU .zip from TWRP and reboot.
21. Uninstall KingUser.
You are rooted and S-OFF. Enjoy your ROMs/Kernels freely.
This method is highly finicky. It worked for me, and it can for you! it took me about an hour to get KingRoot to display the message asking to install KingUser. Just keep trying!
Good Luck!!!
Anyone else get this to work?

Now s-off unlocked 1.61 and stock lollipop.
I installed kingroot/king user. Got root. Ran sunshine...purchased it...sunshine rebooted phone.
On reboot clear data of kingroot/king user...uninstall and reinstall king root / king user. Get root again...finish sunshine.
Rebooted, unlocked! Rerun kingroot stuff for root. Install twrp from play store, ignore warnina have it install...works. Perm root now.

You won't have true write protection disabled until you turn s-off if you haven't already. Other wise apps you remove and settings you change with root will revert each time you reboot.

This is true. With these phones, root itself is almost moot. S=off is what I really want. Sure u can use titanium backup, but u CANT remove system apps, change boot animations, edit build.prop, etc... All because of.the built in write protection which u need s=off for... Ppl need to just bite the bullet and get sunshine. I got it the day it finally came out for us (back on 4.4.2) and been thankful for it every day since...

Now I'm having this problem. I kept running kingroot, then it rebooted on me and told me I couldn't try to run it any more. So I uninstalled it thinking that would clear the problem. Now every time I try to install it it errors out and says "App not installed". I have no idea what to try next. Anyone have any hints?

So very sorry for my ignorance As I am going to get the cell phone craze and then the smartphone craze.
The last cell phone I owned took a team of mules to take the battery.
Please tell me what the term ruu means.
My interest is to completely or near completely "gut" my Verizon note 4 in my US Cellular note 4 and then be able to install single or multi boot systems, hopefully using modular Code
That would be either less than typical roms then I read about here or else very streamlined roms only data that would support the main operating system and whatever hardware is installed. I certainly wouldn't want to end up with S OFF and routed machines that I could then install stock or custom-written Apps, software firmware and Code whatever else kind I may desire. well I remain hopeful that many will tell me this is not a problem even so it's all tells me it is impossible I will remain confident of success As I am convinced tenacity is more powerful than all the smarts in the world as well as a good looks fast runners sweet talkers and even possibly the best Coders out there that may only lack that one trait named tenacity. if there's another post about this anymore please get me to that.
Thank you in advance we anticipated cooperation and kindness, I remain.

Unfortunately most of us in this section won't be able to help. Your best bet is going to the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 4 section. Coming for help with your note 4 in an HTC section is like asking some people who know Chevy if they could help you fix your Ford. The expert advise would be ask the Ford experts and not the Chevy experts.
RUU is a term for HTC phones: Rom Update Utility. Samsung devices use Odin and I have no idea how to use it. I would help if I could.
The correct area for your device:

What does the repair phone option do? And I guess I wasn't too clear. My phone, for the most part, is fine. Everything works fine *except* that KingRoot won't install correctly. All my other apps are fine.

HTC 10 EE Stock Recovery/Firmware

Hey Folks
I have a slight issue, I had a rooted HTC 10(UK EE) phone running firmware 1.80.91.1, which I wanted to update so I flashed a back-up from TWRP to restore OTA functionality, however, this backup was corrupted and the phone got stuck in a boot loop with no OS, hurrah!
I've sorted that however, by locating a TWRP backup of 1.21.91.4, which was the only one I could find for the CID EVE__001, this file was just a boot and sys.img no recovery, now I still can't get OTA updates as I'm getting the file system is corrupted error when trying to download the updates.
So I've hunted and hunted either to find a full back-up, recovery or RUU that will work with my CID as I'm S-on, I have had no luck, so I can no longer get updates for the phone.
So, does anyone have a stock recovery they could upload for either 1.21.91.4, or even better a full back-up of any of the x.xx.91.x firmware? I've been tearing my hair out trying to find anything above 1.21.91.4 and even that was just a partially back up.
Any help is muchly appreciated.
Hi, I am om EE uk but my CID is HTC__001.
I HAVE A FULL BACKUP DONE IN TWRP, WHICH YOU CAN HAVE. I WILL SORT IT OUT AND SEND YOU A LINK. DONT KNOW IF IT WILL WORK BECAUSE OF DIFFERENT CID, BUT YOU CAN GIVE IT A GO.
GIVE ME A DAY OR SO.
Sorry to resurrect the thread, @si86 I've having trouble restoring radio signal on my HTC 10 after flashing an incorrect ROM, I'm on EE also- I'd really appreciate a copy of your TWRP backup to try on my handset if you are able to supply, would be very appreciated! I'm able to change the CID to match, having been through them all recently! My bootloader is unlocked and I'm S-Off. Thanks.
@Tuesg Were you able to rectify your situation?

I've just hunted high and low to try and figure out why nothing will flash successfully to my HTC 10.
turns out to be this same issue, I'm showing as CID - EVE_001 on an MID 2PS62000
Any chance you could send me that link as well so that I can at least try and get the phone back to a usable state instead of being stuck in either bootloader, download or recovery.
My phone is Bootloader unlocked, but still S-On as I hadn't got that far yet.
Will i need to flash a stock recovery? and lock the bootloader again to get this to install properly?
It's really proving tricky as hell.
I got caught out a bit here as I was half way to using sunshine to s_off, and then I accidentally triggered an OTA update to Nougat 7.0.......
It never restarted properly after that and i've been unable to get it back to 6 or any other ROM at all as they all fail.
I managed to fix it, but only by switching to s-off and installing the EU edition software, I'm a tad concerned now though as I've yet to get the roll out of the 7.0 update, not sure if that's because of installing a different firmware or whether it hasn't been rolled out yet.
@si86 Many thanks for your assistance and sharing the files, I was unable to fix my phone after trying various avenues (100+hrs) so I swallowed my pride and went the insurance route, not worth spending more time on getting to work and I now have a rather nice device, yet unusable call/texts wise to play with alongside my nice shiny new one running 2.41.91.3 - I've rooted and S-off with sunshine, just trying to decide whether i'm going to play with some more custom ROMS again! Of course I am!
@Tuesg Kudos on fixing your issue!

You can usually do it straight from the SuperSU app itself.

Along with superuser usually comes with an app for configuring it, depending on how it was rooted. SuperSU is usually the most common although I much prefer magisk.
It will be obvious what it's called, either superuser, SuperSU, etc. SuperSU contains within it the ability to fully unroot.
If there's no app, and if it is a stock rom, and not a custom one, a factory reset will remove it. If not, you will probably need to either do some adb commands to remove it, or remove it using the recovery.

In short terms, yes that might work for banking apps but it won't work for future Android updates. You need a completely stock (untouched) system and SU changes that even if you choose to unroot via the application.
hi when i i tried that super user unoot it goes to Twrp bootloader and nothing in there says unroot or uninstall twrp bootloader

I've had that issue with both Viper and Maximus. Removing root doesnt seem to totally remove it, and certain apps still pick up ... something.
Going back to total stock condition is a huge pain in the unmentionables. Because quite a lot of phones don't actually have an RUU for thier CID (for instance mine, H3G__001) has no RUU. So complete stock, even from TWRP backup was never an option for me. Even though ROOT wasnt an issue, things like OTA problems persisted no matter what.
I had to S-OFF (worth it in general tbh) in order to go back to a complete stock condition using the HTC WWE version (HTC__001). In the end I just decided to stick with the ROM I have now, LeeDroid. It has the option to be installed without root from the get go, but these days I just use Magisk. It is so simple to hide from banking apps and even things like pokemon go, that it doesnt do any harm having root there.

Hi there,
I'm in the exact same spot as the guy above. I restored the backup he mentioned, but don't have the Recovery. Therefore my phone is telling me I need to enter decryption password and won't boot past it.
Would you be able to give me that backup too?
Thanks.

Alternate service to send in HTC 10 since Sunshine is down.

Is there another service to send in my HTC 10 since the service by Sunshine doesn't exist?
I am unable to unlock the bootloader, the Sunshine app gives me a failure. I have no OEM bootloader option in the developer tools. I've made several attempts using the various forums so I can root the phone without success. I feel it's time to send it out to someone who can assist me.

I only see that under the Unlock service page.
I do not see that stated anywhere on the s-off mail in service page, which is what I linked above.
It clearly states:
"Worldwide Delivery available on this item."
Further down that same page.

Sorry we only offer this service within Europe because in the past we have had bad experiences with peoples going missing in transit as well as large import duty tax bills here in the uk and your side too because the governments deem them taxable even though they are coming in for repair

I only know of a couple other shops that do it, but they are both also in the UK.
Other option, would be an XTC2 Clip/Power Adapter/Java Card, if they even still work after the HTC 10 has been updated to Oreo(not sure on that part).

Ebay. Do you have the procedure?
I've found this https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/unlock-your-htc-10s-bootloader-0178418/ after I read this thread, did you try that?
I'm a noob in a similar situation, have a completely stock non-branded Nougat and want to root and maybe install Viper or Lineage, but been putting it off cause I had to find a way to back up all the apps. Now I have to figure out a way to root/s-off quick, before my warranty runs out next month :S

If your htc 10 is still on Nougat and ISN'T a Verizon device, then I think you can use Sunshine to S-OFF, don't hold me too it, but I believe you can. :good:
just download the app and try it out, it won't take your $$ of anything if it doesn't work, can't hurt to try.
I believe it is not working for Oreo and Pie htc 10 variants, and Verizon is needed to do by mail I think unless they fixed it for Verizon N as well.
Don't remember. but the website still says they do mail in, but I don't think they still are.
Give it a try and report back.

SunShine was unable to gain root access to your device. You may need to gain "TempRoot" or "PermRoot" through some other means. For HTC Devices, unlocking with HTCDev.com and rooting with a custom recovery may work.

You can 100% unlock the bootloader @ htcdev and flash custom ROMs, you don't need soff for that.
I wouldn't update from N firmware until you try a few things out.
Maybe unlocking bl and rooting then sunshine will work?

Ah, that's good, didn't know that.
I'm gonna wait a few more days for an answer from the devs of the last app on my phone that can't back up via adb and its own backup process is broken. After that I'm gonna do what you said.
Is the guide I linked above ok or is there maybe an XDA guide to doing that? I looked at the Guides subforum here but there's too much stuff and I've never rooted a phone b4 so I'm not sure which thread I'm supposed to be looking at :silly:

Yea since you have the US locked version, or I think that's what you meant by unbranded. What's your firmware (in download mode) x.xx.617.xx or x.xx.401.xx

No, I've got the EU version (or I suppose I do, I bought it in the EU). I meant that I got it from a retailer, not a cell network company like Verizon, since I see those need some special treatment. Software number is 2.41.401.41
