HTC M8 Google Play or Developer Edition: What will you buy? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well I'm making this thread to see what model of HTC One you guys plan on picking up. The Developers Edition is $649 and will ship today (March 25th, 2013 at 10am PST), whereas according to one article the Google Play Edition is $699 and will be available for pre-order sometime today (presumably at the same 10am PST).
That pricing means the new GPE is $100 more than the last one, whereas the Dev edition is the same price. These models will most likely both be 32GB, and have the same cellular bands. Considering that last years Dev and GPE Ones were only fully usable on AT&T, it's quite possible that this may be the case again (however unfortunate this is, to me this is no problem as I use AT&T ). Personally, I'm leaning towards the Dev edition simply because I think the new sense looks nice and they always did multitasking a little better than stock. Oh, and it's available today .
I'd be really interested to know what the pros over here are vouching for and why, so let us know!

Yeah that would put it in so many more people's hands!

I would choose the dev edition over the GPE edition since I am not a huge fan of pure android since it's really too simple. Sense is the best between the two. I like TW since it has all the features, but HTC is slowly catching up. Both have unlocked bootloaders anyways.

Well, the GPe says it has AWS on HSPA, but the Developer Edition makes no mention of it. Please, oh please HTC, don't screw this up again. I used my HTC One Developer Edition on T-Mobile last year and it really ruined the experience for me when I saw that "Edge" notification
Let's hope the hardware is the same for GPe and Developer Edition. I'm going to order one now.
-Collin-

I'm would like to go for the GPE, but does anyone know for sure that the GPE version will support T Mobile 4G LTE? I'm not sure if I'm looking at the specs of the phone on the Google Play site correctly when comparing them to the various bands that T Mobile uses.
(I'm jumping ship from Sprint after many, many years, so I'm not fully up on the GSM stuff...)

It's odd that it doesn't list AWS on 3G
Unlocked GSM/UMTS/HSPA+/LTE
GSM/GPRS/EDGE quad-band 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
HSPA/UMTS quad-band 850/AWS/1900/2100 MHz
3G (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)
HSDPA 21, HSUPA 5.76
4G LTE (700 MHz, AWS)
Click to collapse
Looks like the AT&T model (with 21 Mbps HSDPA) but with HSPA AWS enabled.
Over at Android Police they have a different spec set for the GPE:
GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900
WCDMA: 850/AWS/1900/2100 with HSPA+ up to 21Mbps
LTE: 700/850/AWS/1900 (B17/B5//B4/B2, carrier aggregation B4+17;B2+17), + Roaming 2600/1800 (B7/B3)
Click to collapse
If they're to be believed, the 700 Mhz in the GPE is for AT&T (17) and will not support T-Mobile's newly acquired spectrum (12).
The T-Mobile version has HSDPA 42:
Tmus: 850/AWS/1900/2100 MHz with HSPA+ up to 42 Mbps
Tmus: 700/AWS MHz
Click to collapse
And I would assume the 700 Mhz in this would be Band 12.
Again, HTC screws over T-Mobile users, but, not as bad as with the M7.
Edit: Had a little chat with HTC Support about the Dev edition, and according to Frank, the Dev version has these frequencies:
GSM /GPRS /EDGE : 850/900/1800/1900 MHz WCDMA: 850/900/1900/2100 MHz CDMA: 800/1900 MHz (BC0/BC1) LTE: 700/AWS/1800/2600MHz
Meaning yes for Sprint and AT&T, but no for T-Mobile.

^This. I agree that there really isn't much to stock Android. With sense you get the tap on/off features this time around, and those are really nice from what I've heard. I ordered my dev edition with 2 day shipping and can't wait!

Guys, I take whatever CS reps say with a grain of salt, but I just called "Let's Talk" and asked how to get the "Free Express Shipping" listed on the HTC page. The kind (sarcasm) rep informed me that he didn't know, nor did he know exactly when it would ship. His best guess was April 3rd, which is pretty random.
I'm curious if you all get shipping confirmations today. He was 100% certain the phone wouldn't ship today because they're not "allowed to order it from HTC until tomorrow."
Again, take it with a grain of salt, but that was what I was told after calling. I've decided to sit tight on my order until I A) know when it's going to ship and B) it has T-Mobile's AWS 3G band. Good point about the 700mhz being Band 12 instead of Band 17...that makes the phone somewhat useless for AT&T, which sometimes I have to use when I am getting crummy T-Mobile service at work. Argh!

Of course, that chat with HTC comes with a heaping cupfull of salt. I wouldn't be surprised though, it would match what they did with the M7.
The GPe does have Band 17, it doesn't have 12. So the GPe edition is 100% compatible with AT&T.

Google's website sure says there's T-Mobile compatibility... AWS band could be why it's $50 more lol. But really, no one should have to use Edge these days on a flagship.

Ordered my Dev Edition earlier. I called because I wanted to ship it to my office. She mentioned that they will only ship to my billing address. She also mentioned that they will not ship until 4/3. Also, they will need to call you to verify the order as well (Since I called in, they did this all at the same time.) As mentioned in a previous reply, this is exactly what happened last year for the HTC One M7 Dev Edition as well.

I called as well, to verify and change to overnight shipping. She said that someone accidentally made the Developer's Edition available to purchase today when it's supposed to be available at midnight tonight. Also, she said that because I'm under 18, she had to cancel the order and have me try again with an adult's card after midnight tonight. This was after I was put on hold for 30 minutes. With the M7 Dev Edition it said I needed to call, but it actually shipped with me not doing anything. I am pretty mad about this customer service, and if the device won't ship until 4/3 (which I was not told), I don't know if I'll buy one at all.

Would HTC really exclude AWS band from the Developer Edition? What's the advantage to that? I feel like it'd only anger customers. Makes no sense

Have they said if Developer or Google Play Edition is coming to the UK? Can't find any details yet.

I'm probably missing something really simple, but where do we order the developer edition from. When I click on the buy link on the U.S. HTC website it only gives me options for the carrier orders.

Is your user ID the same on WP Central?

Couldn't resist waiting for stupid TMobile to release their version, just pre-ordered the Google play edition.
Say 2 - 3 weeks for delivery but I think they will start shipping earlier than that hopefully next week.
If i get some solid confirmation that the developer edition has AWS band, then I may cancel the google play one and order the developer edition when it goes live later.

[Q] Does the quad-core HTC One X support AWS bands?

Hi, I'm seeing conflicting information on whether the quad-core (international) HTC One X supports T-Mobile US's AWS bands. Engadget and other sites are reporting that it does. But HTC's own specs don't mention it.
Does anyone have any light to shed on this?
Thanks, Alan
Yes, HTC One X will support Tmobile's AWS band
Hi, as we do know the T-Mobile HTC One X will debut in early April, for a yet to be released date, though T-Mobile didn't provide exact release date. As you mentioned that HTC' site doesn't give any clue whether it will support AWS band or not. We can say that it will be updated soon for sure, as well as T-Mobile reveals a release date. We suspect that HTC didn't show T-Mobile AWS band as the device is only available for pre-order from various retailers, so it will update it soon as well as T-Mobile reports.
I'd really like to know the answer to this question also. To add to the confusion, HTC's site for the AT&T version of the One X (Called the One XL) does show that it will support AWS: www.htc.com/us/products/htconex-att#tech-specs
It doesn't make a lot of sense to me why the AT&T specific version would support AWS for T-Mobile (never seen that before in an AT&T specific phone). In the past it was usually the international version that supported AWS. I don't see any of the various phone/gadget blogs mentioning this about the AT&T version either.

I don't understand what you're talking about here. There's no T-Mobile HTC One X. T-Mobile is getting the One S (the lesser midrange handset). That's what was announced at MWC this week, to appear in the spring.
For what it's worth, here's a rumor that T-Mobile will get the HTC One X in the summer (with the Tegra 3 quad-core cpu and stock Android even).
www.androidandme.com/2012/02/smartp...e-to-get-stock-android-4-0-and-quad-core-cpu/
I'm wondering myself does Tegra 3 Quad core support AWS band and if so does it support HSPA +42 or HSPA +21? Also is it the One X Terga coming to Tmobile Usa or One XL Snapdragron coming to Tmobile USA? Like another poster said the HTC website shows the AWS band for One XL under AT&T but no AWS band for One X under international version.

Come to think about it somebody posted the build prop file for the HTC Endeavor aka HTC One X and it did not list compatibility with AWS band.

This is a bit of speculation on my part, but it could be that AT&T ordered the HTC One X to be compatible with T-Mobile's AWS since they predicted that the merge was going to go through. Lets not forget that AT&T and T-Mobile do have new roaming agreements after the merger fell through.

That makes a lot of sense. Seems plausible.
Don't know if it means anything, but GSMArena now lists the AT&T One X as having AWS (I assume they probably just pulled it from the HTC site and I do find that GSMArena's stats can be a little unreliable):
www.gsmarena.com/htc_one_x_at&t-4614.php
I'd hate to have to have an AT&T branded phone to get AWS though. I like the unbranded phones.

Hmm. There's also this story, from yesterday (and spreading rapidly), that quad-core variant of the One X has cleared the FCC, headed to an unknown carrier:
www.pocketnow.com/android/quad-core-htc-one-x-gets-fcc-certified
And this rumor from a week ago that T-Mobile will get a stock Android version of the One X:
www.androidandme.com/2012/02/smartp...e-to-get-stock-android-4-0-and-quad-core-cpu/
From what I read this morning, international version of the One X will be with AT&T. Therefore, the chance of One X being available on T-Mobile dropped, but its not for sure until CTIA in May. Hopefully they'll announce something.
Other than that, T-Mobile customer may be able to use international version of the One X on T-Mobile someday. Since T-Mobile may or may not be refarming their 1900 GSM spectrum. If they do refarm it to 1900 UMTS, then I'll be one happy T-Mobile customer.

Where are you getting this? It's well known the AT&T is not getting the international version, but rather a different version with a Qualcomm dual-core processor, to accomodate AT&T's LTE network. Even HTC's own website list's a separate AT&T version of the One X, from the international version.
Also, if you look earlier in this thread, the AT&T version in the specs on HTC's website support's T-Mobile's AWS frequencies. So there may be more than one avenue to get a One X that works on T-Mobile.

First, I've worded it wrong regarding the international version. I meant to say that the international version is compatible with AT&T. Won't be offered on AT&T, but the UMTS bands has 1900/2100 on it so it could be used on AT&T.
HTC One X
I think I might have missed the AWS spectrums for the XL. Personally I don't think I would put too much hope into it, because the XL for AT&T is meant to focus on LTE. If you look on the T-Mobile Reinvigorated Challenger Strategy Presentation, AT&T's AWS also ties into their LTE.
T-Mobile's refarming their GSM 1900mhz, hopefully to UMTS 1900mhz. If that's the case, T-Mobile users will still have a chance to use One X or One XL on T-Mobile.
T-Mobile USA Reinvigorated Challenger Strategy Presentation
There's also rumors that One X will be coming to Sprint and to T-Mobile as the G4X. The time the possibility of announcement is probably in May.
Rumor
So I'm trying to hold out till May to see if I could see an announcement. If not, I think I might be getting the international version of One X, then wait patiently and hoping T-Mobile will hurry up and refarm the 1900 spectrum. There's also words that the refarming has already been going on, with more iPhone users noticing that they could get 3G speed.
Thanks for the further explanation and links. I could be wrong, but it still seems to me like the AT&T One XL might work on T-Mobile. If you look at the specs on HTC's website, you can see that it has AWS not just for LTE, but also for WCDMA (i.e. UMTS).
www.htc.com/us/products/htconex-att#tech-specs
I don't see why that wouldn't work with T-Mobile. As nickmgray points out above, it's plausible that AT&T specified the bands for the One XL, before they knew that the T-Mobile merger was going to fall through. Hence at the time, they may have wanted a phone that would work with T-Mobile's network.

I'm not holding my breath on the spectrum refarming being a solution for the One X. Unfortunately I can't remember where I first read about it, but my understanding is that it will take a couple years. At that point there will certainly be more compelling phones than the One X.
Also, if you look at the charts in the link you provide to the T-Mobile Strategy Presentation, you can see that even after the refarming, it appears T-Mobile will still be using AWS for HSPA+, as well as for LTE. So it seems that a phone that does not have the AWS bands could suffer significant coverage issues. T-Mobile's goal in the document seems to be to make the network better for in-bound international roaming and more compatible with devices from other carriers. But a phone without AWS for a U.S. resident would still be limited.
It would be nice though if international and AT&T phones were fully compatible with T-Mobile's network. That would give T-Mobile a nice advantage with handset options; and a good way to tempt away AT&T customers (who could then keep the phones they already have). But, again, it seems like this is something for the future and not a way to count on using the One X with T-Mobile.
I'm hoping HTC will just make an international version with the AWS bands, as is the case with the Sensation. Or it would be great if they put a pentaband radio in the international version, like Nokia has been doing for a while. Or maybe the Tegra-3 One X for T-Mobile rumor will turn out to be true.
I actually like the size of the One S better. But it's not worth it to me without the 720p resolution and 16 Gb of memory (without a microsd expansion slot).
Just looked at the FCC's documents on AT&T's One X.
The document doesn't mention testing any of T-Mobile's bands. Don't know if they didn't test it, or the phone don't have it.

Thanks for the link. I'm not sure what to make of that. For example, they only list GSM 850 and 1900 frequencies. It would be really unusual for a phone these days like this not to be quad-band GSM. So it seems like the FCC report is probably not listing all the bands the phone can operate on, only those that it will use with the AT&T network. I'm not sure this really answers the question about AWS in the AT&T One XL.
What about the One X with the tegra-3 processor that went through the FCC? Do you know where the report for that is? I can't really see how to search the FCC website.

Thanks for the link. Again, this doesn't really indicate that T-Mobile is completely refarming HSPA+ to 1900 Mhz. It just says, "A nice side benefit of the refarming effort is that our 4G network will be compatible with a broader range of devices, including the iPhone." The fact that more different devices will technically work on the network, does not mean that they will get the same coverage as devices that work on both 1900 Mhz and AWS. As the other document you linked to indicates, after the refarming HSPA+ will be on both 1900 Mhz and AWS, so it may mean that if you want the best coverage on T-Mobile's network, you need a phone covering both frequencies. Time will tell I guess, but it doesn't seem clear yet.
And, as I said, this is so far down the road to completion (they're starting now, but it will take a couple years to complete) that I don't see it as being a good solution for using a One X that lacks the AWS bands on the T-Mobile network.
Took a while, but I found the international version of the One X on FCC.
One X FCC
Looking at the model number and matching with other site, it looks like it's the one. The only problem is, it doesn't show any frequency testings. I also looked up the One S and found 3 model numbers, seems like only the one coming to US is the one with the frequency testings.

Roll call

Anybody planning to get this? The size is amazing. Might be enough to pull me back to big red. I've been waiting a long time for a phone with high end specs that is 4" or so. Yes, this is 4.3 but is smaller than many 4"phones like the Nexus S, so even better Can't wait to see some full reviews and see how it feels in hand.

Thats what the official release says but its not unheard of for preorders to ship early, authorized dealers to sell early, flagship stores to sell early, etc.
It's not enough to pull me to Verizon, but if there's a GSM version, I'm pretty sure I will buy it. I was originally waiting for the Nexus devices, and I still will, but I don't expect any of them to be small like this. I'm really tired of the trend toward bigger phones.

I'm fairly sure you'll get what you're looking for. We already know there's going to be a UK version, and most of the phones in the UK work on AT&T just fine. The only thing is, it might end up having an Intel processor, and those are still a bit shaky.
I'm going to have a harder time, I think. I'd really like something with T-Mobile bands. The spectrum refarm should cover me even if it doesn't have T-Mobile bands, but I'd rather have something with AWS in it.

GSM on Developer Edition - ?
Interesting about the GSM radio.... So if I purchase the Developer Edition of the Razr M is it still locked to Verizon or will it allow me to utilize this GSM radio with another carrier?
I'm committed to getting this little guy but still on the fence on $99/locked or $549/unlocked. The option to switch carriers would make this decision a slam dunk.
Edit: Normally I'm telling others "search is your friend" - oh well....
From MotoDev Q&A:
Does unlocking the bootloader mean I can use my device with any wireless operator?
No, this does not disable a carrier subsidy lock if one exists. Some subscriptions are tied to a specific wireless operator and the phone cannot be used on another operator’s network. A “locked bootloader” and “carrier subsidy lock” are thus two entirely different topics. Do not unlock the bootloader if you are seeking to disable the carrier subsidy lock

If I buy it I'll probably do a contract. Early termination fee is $350 I believe. Difference in price between on contract and off contract is $450. So unless I can pick one up somewhere else for less than $450, the numbers say I'm better off starting a contract and then just terminating it and paying the fee if necessary.

This is a great point, are there any other restrictions through VZ that would prevent this? You could wait it out on ebay, but I'd prefer to go straight through VZ.

I don't think there are any other restrictions. I think it is relatively straight forward math. $99 on–contract plus (max) $350 etf = $450, or a full $550 off–contract from Verizon. That etf drops by like $10 for every month you keep Verizon, so you are unlikely to pay the full thing regardless. Unless you can pick one up for like $400 new on ebay, seems the numbers favor starting a contract.
If anybody sees any errors please correct me.

Oh snap! If it's a global phone, then I can probably just buy the Verizon version and use that, just like I did with the Droid Pro. I just have to wait for somebody to come out with the band unlock.
I'm a Motorola user for 6 years, i modded every phone i had like SLVR L6, L7, KRZR K1, Z3, V3, V3i, E8, RAZR2 V8. After the P2K and Linux, the Android era: Cliq XT, Cliq, Defy, Atrix, D2G, RAZR XT910, and i like to say that i love Motorola phones...
I'm my personal opinion, Motorola has everything to make potencial Nexus-alternative phones, they make great hardware, they're know what they doing, only if the unlock their bootloaders and give better OTA support and just in time... and who know... maybe the next Nexus would be a Motorola.
My only concern about this phone is the lack of the HDMI port :/

[Q] Purchasing unlocked/developer M9 for Fido?

Hi folks of XDA! I have a quick question for anyone who knows their 3G/4G/LTE band connections!
So before going straight into the question I feel like it's necessary for me to give you some background information... I currently have an iPhone 6 (as my HTC One X broke late last year) and I'm definitely planning to switch back to Android. More specifically, I want to purchase an HTC One M9 unlocked/developer edition. Unfortunately I don't believe HTC will be selling an unlocked/developer edition for Canada (as they have not done this for the M8) so I was wondering if I can buy a USA unlocked/developer edition of the HTC M9 and it would be compatible with Fido's 3G/4G/LTE bands?
According to Fido's website, "Your device must be compatible with the Fido network, which uses GSM, UMTS, HSPA and HSPA+ at 850 MHz and 1900 MHz. To access LTE network, the phone must be compatible with: 700 MHz on Band 17; | 1700/2100 MHz on Band 4; | 2600 MHz on Band 7.
I did a little digging and HTC USA's twitter, states that, "The HTC One M9 - Developer and Unlocked utilizes LTE bands: 700/850/AWS/1800/1900/2300/2600(B12/B17/B29/B13/B5/B4/B3/B2/B30/B7)"
A Fido mod on the Fido forums states, "Fido's LTE network uses the 2100 and 2600 MHz frequencies (mostly 2600 MHz)" (So I'm guessing it'll work with Fido's 2600MHz) and from another user, they said, "You do need AWS to gain access to [Fido's] LTE network". (looks like the unlocked M9 have AWS)
So with all this information, I'm guessing the unlocked version of the M9 will be able to work due to it having 2600 MHz frequency and AWS? Will there be a problem with battery as different bands are being utilized? If I recall correctly, some tech reviewers on YouTube have used Korean phones in the past and they had really bad battery due to the phone keep trying to find "proper" 3G/4G/LTE bands but when they got ahold of a US model, battery life was far better.
tldr; unlocked M9 work for Fido 3G/4G/LTE? Difference in battery life? (explain if possible); ayylmao?
Also I don't want to purchase a Roger's HTC One M9 outright on day 1 as it'll still have bloatware and delay in updates... two things I do not like!
Fido uses 700, AWS, and 2600 for LTE, all of which the Dev edition supports.
So my presumption is that it'll work flawlessly with Fidos network with no battery issues.
My goal now is to get the unlocked version of the M9 to be shipped to Canada haha

Still, if AT&T doesn't end up selling directly, I have no idea why anyone wouldn't buy the unlocked version.
HTC has always been good about this especially with their unlocked version. I do hope this unlocked version will have the right band support much like the Nexus 5X and 6P.

I think one difference this time is they said it's included in the warranty. I'm still using my old M8, so I can't speak for the M9 or A9. However, from what I've seen historically, there was always the risk that HTC wouldn't honor the warranty if the bootloader was unlocked. It's nice to see that it's covered this time though.
Here's what we got for bands:
#UHL SKU (EMEA/Asia)
2G/2.5G - GSM/GPRS/EDGE
850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G UMTS
850/900/1900/2100 MHz
4G LTE (up to 450Mbps)
FDD: Bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28, 32
TDD: Bands 38, 40, 41
Support Cat 9 LTE, download up to 450 Mbps, upload up to 50 Mbps
#WL SKU(America)
2G/2.5G - GSM/GPRS/EDGE
850/900/1800/1900 MHz
CDMA: 800/1900 with EVDO Rev A
3G UMTS
850/AWS/900/1900/2100 MHz
4G LTE (up to 450Mbps)
FDD: Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 17, 20, 28, 29, 30
Support Cat 9 LTE, download up to 450 Mbps, upload up to 50 Mbps
#UHL SKU(Japan)
2G/2.5G - GSM/GPRS/EDGE
800/850/1800/1900 MHz
3G UMTS
850/900/1900/2100 MHz
4G LTE (up to 450Mbps)
FDD: Bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 13, 17, 19, 21, 26
TDD: Bands 38, 41
Support Cat 9 LTE, download up to 450 Mbps, upload up to 50 Mbps
While it's not as comprehensives as what I have on my Moto X Pure 2015, my initial looking shows that LTE should work in most major European and Asian countries as well as Australia and New Zealand. Didn't check South America/Caribbean.

They thump the "developer friendly" drum, and of course are quite great with warranty / service in this regard... Though if you've ever scrolled through their sources, you will know that they have some progress to make when it comes to being dev friendly
Having a risk-free bootloader unlock / tinker will do wonders for this, though. People will really go to town on the M10, which is going to be a golden age for us future M10 owners

It actually doesn't show the Unlocked version if you go to your cart afterwards. Both unlocked and T-Mobile versions show 'T-Mobile' in the product title once in the cart. Might actually mean that there isn't any difference between the two, and devunlock is now under warranty by default?
Pretty sure verizon will have it locked down so hard that beaups wont be able to unlock it for awhile

I am highly interested in the new HTC 10, I hate that the IR blaster is gone, but it appears to make up for that in all the other areas. My question is, can I get the unlocked version and use it on Verizon with full functionality? Or should I just wait for bootloader unlock and root on the Verizon version to purchase? Decisions, Decisions Really hope this phone sees bootloader unlock, and root! I have Verizon grandfathered unlimited data plan, and use my hotspot on my jailbroken iPhone daily. Really want to go back to Android for my next phone and this looks like the device to switch back to, but I cant do it if Verizon's punk ass keeps locking down the bootloaders effective making Android devices useless to me. I wont buy a device I cant jailbreak or root for having to have the hotspot.

Yeah I saw but was hoping for a Nexus like device that would work on all carriers?? Guess I am going to keep wishing huh? If it gets unlocked bootloader/root on Verizon, I will pick this one up and make my return back to Android. I was just hoping that we could have a HTC 10 that worked across all carriers. Perhaps they will come out with a dual sim version down the line? Crossing fingers for all of it. My M8 was my favorite phone minus the ****ty camera.

I had a M8, scren broke after a week when I left it on my desk, like a very little shock, when I've asked for a repair, support was OK, till they saw on their screen that it was unlocked.
Support told me that rooted smartphones could break a screen ... I've asked for a proof, never had one.
On a side note, my wife had the same M8, unrooted, screen broke almost the same way; got a replacement.
Obviously, the screen on this model was bad

There's only 1 published SKU for the US and it supports both GSM and CDMA so I suspect that the unlocked model sold by HTC will indeed work on Verizon and Sprint but the two carriers haven't certified it yet, and likely will want you to purchase a software locked version from them directly. If we can confirm the radios will work, then unlocked is definitely the way to go. No VZW bloat and warranty bootloader unlock support!

So far we know the model H933 and that it will come in cloud silver (maybe other colours but website only shows one for now). Also we may not get the V30+ but that is not a big deal since its only more storage.

If you want bootloader unlocked in Canada, it's the same situation like the LG G6. You will have to get the U.S. carrier unlocked version of the LG V30, which is eligible for official bootloader unlock. It will have all the U.S./Canadian bands.
Here's the LG G6 US997 carrier unlocked bands below. See, if you live in Canada, you would be fine.

it's actually band 71 (600 MHz) for T-Mobile new LTE band.
Was discussed in another thread that all the U.S. LG V30 will have the same hardware (antennas), so possibly flashing T-Mobile radio will activate that band on the carrier unlocked version. That's something for a dev to figure out.

Hmmm. I have seen 66, 69, and now 71. I don't care which one it is, I just want to make sure the phone I am considering has it.
Personally, I would ultimately like the dual-SIM version but I value T-Mobile WiFi Calling quite a bit. With one T-Mobile USA SIM and one Telus Canada SIM. I would like to ditch the two phones being carried.

T-Mobile calls 600 MHz LTE BAND 71.
Band 66 is something entirely different. You can read about both there.

So far we know the model H933 and that it will come in cloud silver (maybe other colours but website only shows one for now). Also we may not get the V30+ but that is not a big deal since its only more storage.

Pricing and release date is still up in the air. My guess is at least $899 or maybe $999. Let hope the former.
Probably will not be bootloader unlockable which is sad...
I will try to modify and update this post as more information becomes available.
Are you getting one???

Im debating a v30 or a note 8 but want to compare both in hand first.
Neither will be the CAN version since i dont waste money on devices with locked bootloaders
sent from my Note FE or S8 Plus (exynos)

Personally the note 8 is to big and the "artist" side is not for me. I need the best audio. And now rumors for axon 8 are starting so I'm starting to hesitate a bit between the two.

Also rumors are ZTE is skipping the 8 label and will call it the Axon 9. To be announced in October.
Yeah, I'm curious about it also. See this page, page 13 of the thread:

Never listen to carrier reps. They are often clueless.
U.S. carrier unlocked version (US998) will have T-mobile's 600 Mhz LTE band 71.
LG V30 US998 will have ALL the U.S. carrier bands, so you can take it to any carrier you wish -- even T-mobile. Otherwise it would be pointless to have a U.S. unlocked carrier version if there were any carrier bands it did not have.
Confirmed by T-mobile via Twitter. Thanks to @starscalling for giving us the info. I found the Twitter post he saw.

He says you can buy it "directly from LG unlocked", but you can also buy it online from other retailers like B&H Photo, Amazon, etc. It's the same LG G6 US998 U.S. unlocked carrier model. IF it makes you feel better to buy it from LG, that's fine.
Since we KNOW the U.S. carrier unlocked version will also qualify for LG's REAL bootloader unlock (unlike T-mobile's faux bootloader unlock on the LG G6) THAT is the one to buy.

Hopefully a custom ROM can add the WiFi Calling into the US998 then. I do use it and found it to be the only reliable way to get working cell service on a cruise.
Only thing that sucks about buying the US unlocked model is warranty right?

I never think about the warranty. I am in the US for half of the year so getting warranty service, if needed, shouldn't be an issue.

For you it works out I guess.
I had to get warranty repairs for both my Pixel and LG G6 recently.

In some cases, the US warranty is valid in North America. Until the device is released though, only LG can confirm the warranty terms.
I bought a Nexus 6P for my girlfriend in Canada from Telus that she uses on AT&T in the US. When she registered the device, it issued her the full US warranty.
according to *someone* (working at Telus !?) the price would be around 1000$ CAN (no plan)

Sounds about right. That would be $810 U.S. (current currency value as of this moment), but it never translates exactly to the same exact figure, when it goes on sale in other countries. And they would do "$999" or $995" Canadian, not "$1000". Sales psychology.
For U.S. then would be $799, $849, etc. But $1000 Canadia ($810 U.S.) is in the same ballpark as other rumored prices. Over in South Korea, $846 or something but of course tweaked for their currency sweet spot.

That's probably a guestimate because Telus is not carrying the V30 unfortunately. Freedom Mobile is the only carrier I am aware of definitely getting it. The V20 when it came out last year was about $950 through them but I have asked already. No pricing or the specific model they will carry as of yet.

Sure, this was the original discussion. But let me explain a couple of things.
First, most OEMs manufacture phones in the most efficient way. For instance, people have been able to enable LTE bands on some phones from Samsung, LG, Sony, etc. because apparently those OEMs first enable all LTE bands (sort of a global phone), then use software to RESTRICT what they don't want for various carriers or regions.
Add Frequency Bands to Your Qualcomm Device
Those of you who travel quite a bit undoubtedly own more than one device due to frequency band restrictions put in place by both carriers / OEMs, as well as local regulatory agencies. It’s common to find regional variants of pretty much the same devices from Sony, LG, Samsung, and other OEMs. And of course, these companies want to turn a profit, so they often sell multiple devices rather than one that can switch between all of its hardware-supported frequency bands. Surprisingly, most phones works pretty well with frequency bands that are not officially supported. In fact, this is often just a software limitation that can be circumvented with tools available on XDA.
If you want to add frequency bands, you need to prepare yourself for lots of reading. The process is not as easy as simply rooting, and requires some tools like QPST and QXDM.

Click to collapse
This is not a new concept. A quick Google search shows more. But that above is from an XDA article, which is developer-centric.
But it's not simply using QPST or QXDM to "enable" those bands, the hardware (antennas) also has to be available. On the Moto XT1225, which I own, many people tried to enable European LTE band 20 but it didn't work for one reason because the antenna didn't support that band. In software, it showed it was enabled but there was no way to transmit or receive that frequency due to lack of antenna support.
Now... what's more realistic? That LG would make a separate AT&T, T-mobile, Sprint, Verizon models -- plus all the Canadian carriers, all with different antennas? -- one make ONE "North America" template and then in a final stage lock out what each carrier doesn't need? The HINT is that they are already going to release a U.S. (actually North America) "carrier unlocked" model weeks after the carrier-branded models -- the LG V30 US 998.
Logic would show for manufacturing efficiency, THIS is really the base model the carriers are selling, including T-mobile. Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, T-mobile and all the Canadian carriers are getting a customized variation of THIS US998. It's just their branded versions have the bands enabled/disabled they specifically need.
Then, the US998 will have ALL the U.S./Canadian bands enabled -- probably including LTE band 71. If it didn't, then it really wouldn't be full "carrier unlocked" version.
Twice, the "management" Twitter account of T-mobile seemingly said the "carrier unlocked" version would have LTE band 71. Which was encouraging.
Then the "customer service" (T-mobile Help) Twitter account has questioned that. Which I laugh at. Customer service reps are typically clueless about what unlocking really means, and also they can't speak for LG. They can only speak for T-Mobile product and usually using scripts to go by. [emoji14] I know more than they do how OEMs like LG make phones. Plus, T-Mobile wants you to buy a T-mobile branded phone, not a carrier unlocked phone straight from LG or some other retailers.
But LG doesn't need T-Mobile "permission" for what LG does with a carrier unlocked version not sold or serviced by T-Mobile.
So, based on past experience and knowledge of the industry, I would bet all the North American LG V30 phones have the same hardware (antennas), and that the carrier unlocked version will either have LTE band 71 at release or hopefully it can be enabled by devs. Here's the discussion link:
