Anker PU Leather Case for Google Nexus 5 Review

Received it couple days ago; here's my thoughts on it. I'll try to keep it concise.
Feel: According to the box, the leather is actually synthetic and not actual leather. It's a $8 case so expecting leather would be too much of an overkill anyway. I have to say, it feels premium. The grip is tactile and the phone does not slip from hands.
Protection: My biggest peeve is that the leather does not extend beyond the tpu frame. The right side of the case is exposed making the right side the most vulnerable to damage. However, there is a strap that will protect your phone from a drop. That is if your phone drops completely parallel to the floor. Otherwise, it's up to the tpu frame to cushion your Nexus from possible injury. The rest of the phone is enveloped by synthetic leather and should be impregnable to drops and bumps. I have dropped my Nexus from pocket height and no damage was taken.
Functionality: The functionality is superior to the rest of the cases. The open top allows any headphone jack (regardless of size) to be compatible with your phone. Also, if you're watching movies, the stand comes in handy. Beware of the magnet though. The case takes advantage of the hall sensor built into the Nexus. Basically, the hall sensor turns the screen on and off by the detection of a magnet. Often times, my phone turned off unintentionally because my phone got too close to the magnet.
Durability: Over the course of couple days, I noticed some glue coming off. It's not that big of a deal because it's excess glue that won't affect the binding of the case.
Overall, this is a solid choice for only $8. If you're looking for functionality, this is the case to get. Thanks for reading.
Thank you very much.
I came across this one from LG that looks pretty solid. One of the reasons I ditched my iPhone was so I could have a cooler variety of accessories. Never going back after also realizing Android is awesome.
Nice, but too expensive!

I bought this one (orange) off ebay.co.uk and it is a very good case! Inexpensive too. No magnet however but you get used to it as it fits phone very very good.

I've pretty much tried them all. You compromise on flips though in my dealings. I have tried the cruzerlites, too thick for me....the elegant rock, nice, but a tad too flimsy and no smart cover and "settled" on the Seidio Ledger flip case. What sold me was the led cut out. There's issues with the soft touch backing scuffing off at the corners, but Seidio will work with you in replacing it if you want.

I want to say yes for the most part, because the same issue did not occur with the revised Ledger case they sent me. It went though the same usage as my three other ones and this one for the most part came out with flying colors. However, I do see some slight rubbing off on the bottom of the case, which I can deal with and if it becomes very unsightly, I can go back to Seidio and ask for a new one. I still love the case and still use it as my daily driver case. Not too sure what will happen when my replacement air dock charger comes back. The ledger does not work with that, unless the air dock guys remember to ship me my sticker to put on the back of the case to reinforce the magnets. The reason why the air dock doesn't work is because the soft touch is not glossy in any way and the "micro-suction" pad doesn't adhere. Sorry I digress....
I got the ledger and it has a led cutout for the notification. Also has a smart cover and a pocket to put my google wallet card in it...nah not really, but I could:laugh:

Following up, I don't see myself using this case on a daily basis. Don't get me wrong, I like this case but I prefer the bulky Ballistic case over the leather case. I did a few drop tests on softer ground to see what kind of arrangement the Anker will land in. In the midst of falling, the flap opens up occasionally, causing the face of the phone to be exposed to the floor. In terms of protection, I would not rate this case highly because of the magnet's incapability of clasping the covers together. If you're sure you won't ever drop your phone, go for it if you prefer leather cases.
For now, I'm sticking with the Ballistic SG Maxx. You never know what might happen.

Can you clarify a point? The title says "clear back". Does that mean the part of the case that covers the back of the nexus 5 is transparent?
What is the rectangular cutout on the orange leather looking cover in your images? What is it for and is it on the front or back of the nexus?
How much protection does this case provide against accidental falls?
My wife has a red back nexus 5. What color case would work best with that?

Clear back means that it is transparent as it can be seen from the pictures.
I haven't dropped it yet and hope I would not drop it any time soon but I think it offers quite good falling protection.
It is not a cutout but a metal plate with brand logo and it is not on the back (can be seen from the picture).
Black would probably be nice with it.

i am looking for the thinnest case for my 4g touch. all i really want is a case that gives me a little more grip so the thinner the better. i have a tpu flexible case
(http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005MGUTW6/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_details) and it just isn't thin enough for me.
Have you tried the sprint one? I know its a little expensive but it has a weave design that adds allot of grip and its pretty thin. Also as a bonus it has a kickstand

I have this one and have had it for quite q while now. it is thin but it has scratched the tar out of my phone on the side...if you use this, just do your best not to take it off on on too much.

or the incipio feather.

I have the case mate and like it better than the incipio. Case mate covers the corners of the bezel where the incipio does not.
After using my protective case & holding it in my hand for awhile & noticing how its actually held. I've garnered the assumption that all that's really needed is a outside protective ring, if minimalism is what you're after.
The only thing I could find was one for the iPhone. Something like this would be good for the E4GT if you ask me:
They call this the Bumpy (bumper) case -

I also suggest the sprint case. If you buy it from sprint, expect to get reamed. I got mine there for 35 bucks, but it's on amazon for 15: http://www.amazon.com/Impact-Resist..._1_3?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1326180224&sr=1-3
Thing is a beast for the size. I dropped my phone the other day and just about burst into tears, but this thing totally saved it. The kickstand is also an added bonus. you'd be surprised how often you use it.

I have one of these "hybrid" cases and use it everyday because of the hard back (to protect that thin battery cover). Don't think cutting the back out would work simply because the structure of the case is built around the rigid back, but I suppose one could try it (they are inexpensive). The bumper is also pretty thick so it adds to the quite a bit to the girth.
FYI Have the "barely there" for going out, but don't feel it protects enough for everyday use.

I have this case. I hate thick cases and cases in general. In fact, I've been caseless for months with only one small little scuff mark on the bottom left. However, I decided to put the case back on but with two small modifications. I hate how the case runs a thin piece of plastic over the top of the volume and power buttons. I cut them off and it's MUCH BETTER. Now I can confidently recommend this case.
Edit--------------------
I do have one issue with the case and that is with its design. The kickstand is on the wrong side. When you use it, the power button is on the top and the volume keys are on the bottom. It should be the opposite. I usually want to adjust the volume if I'm using it watching something, I rarely want to use the power button. Small, but annoying flaw in my opinion.
-------------------------
(and yes, taken with my Epic Touch 4G!)
This is the case I bought. I used the bulky rubber cases with the protective glass covers for a long time, but with SII, I decided to go slimmer. I don't have anything on the glass and this case fits the phone perfectly, actually giving it a better feel and weight. It has a sleek look that most cases don't with a brushed aluminum finish on the back. It really looks like it's part of the phone. I can't recommend it enough. The only drawback is that it is minimalist and probably doesn't have as much shock protection as the thicker rubber/plastic cases. That being said. I think that I dropped my previous phone once over it's two year life, so I didn't sweat shock protection much. If you drop your phone alot, this might not be the case for you. Just thought I'd share. I found a link for this case for around $20 when I bought it. The link below is $25. I'm sure you can score a crappier case for $1, but I think the $20 bucks for this thing was worth it. High quality and it looks really nice.
www(dot)accessorygeeks(dot)com/case-mate-barely-there-samsung-epic-4g-touch-hard-case-368189-alum-gry.html
*edit: Sorry for the link. I don't have 8 posts yet in order to post a link, though I've been reading this forum for 2 years now. Oh well. The link is just the first result I got from Google, so hey!
I have the Sprint kickstand case as well but only paid 19.99 for it through Sprint when I ordered my phone.
It's thin, doesn't grip onto material (pocket in pants or purses) but does feel secure when holding it and the kickstand is handy (one of the things I loved about the Epic 4G phone).
I've put it on and removed it from my phone numerous times (I recently bought the desk dock from Sprint) and it's left no scuffs anywhere on my phone.
This will make a thin case for you. You better be good at masking off areas you don't want it on (screen, buttons, ports, camera lens and flash area and rear speaker). Take the battery cover off and mask the area underneath, that way you don't seal the door to the phone. Yeah this is sarcasm but it "could" conceivably be done and be the thinnest case.
I actually thought about doing this but I don't think my skills are up to the task. It can be peeled off if you don't like it.

totally agree. annoying as hell. but i think i figured it out. and maybe you dont do this. but watch ALMOST EVERYONE with their phone. when they turn it sideways, thats how they turn it. so when the case manufacturer made it, thats how they turned it. so, is it the manufacturers flaw? or samsungs?
I recently bought the sprint case on eBay Ford 12.99 awesome deal! And I love the case! No problems at all. Plus I'm a sucker for carbon fiber

Stay away from the Sprint case, it has poor build quality and will scratch your phone after a while. If you want a thin case, get one of the TPU ones.
Transmission sent from a Galaxy S II with XDA Premium
It may not be the thinness but in my opinion its one of the best. I have the Platinum (aka Seidio) case from Best Buy. It's the 2 piece slide in case with holster. It works great.
Sent from my Samsung Epic™ 4G Touch
Just got my mesh case shipped from the UK. If it's a super thin case you're looking for that doesn't cover the front at all so it doesn't mess with a full frontal screen protector...this is the one to get!
I don't see this case protecting it from a hard drop but will protect the bezel and back from scratches. It also acts like extra grip so it doesn't slip out if your hand easily.
It is raised slightly above the bezel so you can rest it screen side down. The sides are completely open to show the sexiness the SGS 3 has to offer.
Another cool feature this case has to offer is that it has a slot for a large coin like a quarter or a .50 cent coin to act like a kickstand.
All in all, I'm really loving this case. I'll add pictures and links to buy as soon as the kids go to sleep (my turn to put them down).

That was my first case. Good case but a bit slippery for me due to the fact that the sides are not protected. I am not comfortable gripping the exposed slippery sides of the GS3.

I got mine from UK. It took more than a week, but I received it before I got my GS3. It has a perfect fit. I am just not comfortable with the sides fully exposed because those are my grip points and GS3 is light and slippery.
I am using the Cruzerlite now and it feels good with the way I grip my phone. Its all about personal choice. My 2 cents.
I am not a huge fan of bulky cases and prefer the super slim look that this case provides. It would have been better if it was a case and holster combo. To each hides/her own.

my gripe with this case is that it only protects the back
who the heck cares about the back battery cover? those cost like $10 to replace
to the OP, there has been a few reviews that i've read stating that the case's front is flush with the screen-meaning it does not protect the screen at all when faced down, even your pictures tells me the same, could you confirm that?
why isn't there any B&M stores in the US have this?

Not sure what the manufacturing tolerances are but the surface of the screen is almost flush with the case.
Let's put it this way, phones are not meant to be dropped. Depending on how they fall, there'll be some damaged no matter which case you use, except probably those fat, oversized and ugly cases. This case will protect the back, the top and the bottom of the phone. The sides are exposed as you can see. In other words it is a good case for carefull people. The slot in the back works better with credit cards. Using a coin is kind of unstable. Like the OP says, to each his own.
Modified version
They really just need to have another version that protects all of the sides, buttons, and has a small lip for the front. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

+1 some cases are meant for those that tend to be clumsy or just want to prevent avoid or feel some what confident that the case will protect their phone in case of a drop.
Some other cases are meant to protect the phone from everyday use and abuse, minor dents, bumps, scrapes and scratches. I tend to buy my cases for this scenario.
I hardly ever put my phone down face down, I would never count on a lip protecting my screen, usually things that will scratch the screen pop up and stick out, which the protruding edges would not help protect it from scratching. Even with a quality screen protector, I avoid this, unless it's on my lap. Which if there is anything on my lap that will scratch it, it will as mentioned above..
If you're counting on a lip protecting, you're looking for trouble.
That's just my opinion.

Can this actually be called a case?
I just received my blue version from the ebay seller in Korea. It took less than two weeks to receive it. The one she sends is labeled ANYMODE instead of Galaxy S III.
Fit is nice and slim, but as everyone stated previously ... It does not protect the screen at all. I'm still waiting for my China TCP case to arrive. In the meantime, I won't get anymore scratches on the back.

Bump - does anyone know of a version of the Galaxy vent case with full protection on all sides (and hopefully a slight lip in front)?
So i finally got this case from www.mobilefun.com today. I really like the aesthetics of the case but it has a fatal flaw in that it doesnt really provide any protection for the front of the screen. For a case with a weird lump on the back, just crying out in temptation to be set screen side down, a design it without a lip to raise the screen off the surface seems thoughtless.
I like the exposed sides because it shows off how sexy and slim the GS3 is; the chances of dropping it and having it strike the exposed side seems slim. The corners are well covered but the screen is left unprotected.
Side note.. ordering from mobilefun.com =/= fun. AVOID!
I also ordered mine from www.mobilefun.com, what a nightmare, but thats another story. I received it a week ago but doesnt fit the phone. I think its because I have a "screen" protector on the back too.

The Draco S3 is a PREMIUM aluminum case offered by DRACOdesign, made of aircraft grade A6061 aluminum. The fit and finish
is far superior to all the other metal bumpers I have owned. It has very solid lock up. The Flare Red finish is flawless, unlike its
competitor's cases which included several imperfections and markings.

Upon removing the case from its packaging I checked over the contents. I found what they called a Strap Cable. It's a
convenient wrist strap that works as a micro-USB cable. You can connect it to the strap loop opening on the bottom right

When picking up the case, I notice a nice heft. It's not heavy. It's a comfortable weight and feels like a quality build. I was
glad to find that the volume rocker and power button were made of aluminum as well. The case fit very well in my hand. It did
not have the boxy feeling of other metal bumpers.
Unlike other metal bumpers, I am able to lay this down and not worry about the camera. It's very flush, it seems to keep the
camera off the surface. The opening ports are a good size. They are large enough to fit the OEM Samsung Data Cable. As
I've complimented the finish of this case, the edges are rounded off. DRACOdesign really paid attention to the small details.
I have to say I am thoroughly impressed and I rate this case highly on my list. The minimalistic design and elegant looks
have won me over.
MSRP: $89.99 and is available at DRACOdesign S3 Aluminum Bumper in 7 different colors.
It is worth the price and from past experiences I've learned to do it right the first time or buy multiple cases until you find
the one you want. I am glad the right case came along early in the game this time.
Alright Guys!
Here is the code for 30% off! It's only good on the Draco S3 Series and it's valid until 10/31/12. Snatch them up NOW!
Brings them down to $62.99. I'd rather feel comfortable from ordering direct to avoid all those counterfeits that could start flooding the market.
Don't forget to hit thanks!

Nice pics, I would like some rubber in the middle between the phone and the bumper (a thin rubber at least )

Thanks. Sorry I made them so big. I don't have Photoshop anymore and it was too much of a hassle to install it again.
Edit - I used the thumbnails pics and have the bigger pics on my blog.
Do you think this case could handle a 5 or 6 foot drop? I would love to see a drop test video.

Case is too nice for a drop test. Lol.
Great Review :good:. Do you think it would still fit with custom backplates (metal insert one)? Do you think the metal backplate with the addition of the metal bumper would totally kill signal?

As long as it's the same size of the factory one. There may be a little bit of room. Also I have heard / read that aluminum back and bumper would drop reception. But if you're in a tower rich area you'd be fine.
Draco sent me one for review as well. I really don't like it. I'll probably just post a link to my blog later. Aside from looks, it's okay with look, feel, and protection, but other than looks, it doesn't do the very well with the rest.
how does it affect the signal?

Most aluminum bumpers do slightly affect signal. It's just the way it works.
Thanks for the review. I ordered one last night and looking forward to it. They have some on Amazon for $59.00 for anyone interested.

Thunder Red:
They are all shown on the site.
I would love to try one of these, but to be honest, my main reason for getting a case with just about ANY phone is to make it less slippery. Don't see this case doing that in the least.... and not really keen on the idea of buying a $90 case.
So the "thunder" colors have the brush finish?

It helps with grip for me. The battery cover was where I would lose grip. Now that my hands close around the bumper, it doesn't slide out like without a case.

Bigger pics on my lame blog.
Ok i looked through the lets talk cases thread. Mostly everything seems to be your normal flip cover case that offers minimal corner protection when dropping. Has anyone found any good shell cases with a flip over screen protector? It would feel nice to just hold a case that offers great drop protection and screen protection withput the added bulk. When i take my note out my roocase i dont wanna put it back in. It becomes much lighter and easier to deal with.

I too am looking for a hard case, similar to Otterbox's Commuter series, and can't seem to find any.

i havnt found one yet. Lookin for one that covers the corners and sides and that also has a screen cover that flips backwards and behind to give a good sturdy feel when standing by itself. Needs auto wakeup as well.
Vivanco Tucano Youngster. A universal case with rubber bands holding the tablet(not so stylish), a zipper, looks rain and dust proof and is padded.

That looked good, but you can't charge it with the flap closed. I called them and asked.... You have to leave it open to charge. I don't want to leave it open to charge it. I want my screen being protected while it's charging.
I'm not sure how new this case is. Otterbox is not coming out with a case, nor is gumdrop.
But Trident has one:

With the total lack of hard cases out there I will be purchasing one of these since I use my tablet for work all day. Was hoping Otterbox was going to come out with one, anyone know why they aren't?
I was honestly hoping that Otterbox would come out with one too... They have one for the old Note 10.1, so you think that they would produce something for the new one. Oh well. And I agree, the lack of hard cases is somewhat disappointing. I have been searching for one ever since I got my Note 10.1 in October. Even doing an Amazon search three months later, it still yields some very poor results. The Trident case looks really nice though, I may have to purchase one of those. So thank you for posting that.

I contacted Gumdrop and was told that they had no plans to make a case for this tablet. I have one of Gumdrops cases for my Nexus 7 2013 and its a nice product. I think I'll order the Trident case since there doesn't seem to be any other heavy duty case on the market at this time. I need the protection on the jobsite.

I've only used it on a table, where it is fine. I really don't use the stand, but rather flip the cover against the back and hold the pad.
Trident Case came in today. Much nicer than I thought it would be. I will upload some pics later.
Does the Trident case protect the screen?
here are some pics of the trident case. The installation of this case on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the hardest was a 8 to me. I had dissemble and reassemble it several times to finally get everything to fit together properly. The silicone covering just did not want to stay in its place. I almost wanted to add some lubrication of some type to the silicone, but the mess after that would have been crazy. I rarely use built in screen protectors but decided to leave this one in place. I want a tempered glass protector but have not found one I like yet. I removed the screen protector from my note 3 zerolemon as soon as I unboxed it. The screen protector with this trident attracts fingerprints like crazy. I had to continuously wipe the fingerprints off during assembly. Very annoying. After getting everything together this case looks alot better than I imagined it would. This case is exactly what I was looking for. I use my tablet for work. I use the tablet so customers can sign invoices. I then am able to email signed documents immediately for invoicing or approval. Another benefit to this case is the sound channeling ports. These ports direct sound to the front of the tablet. Music sounds better and louder. Next during work will be the real test.
Okay kinda different instead of announcing a certain brand of case...share the one you have on your phone at the moment...who knows you may find a hidden gem I'll start LOVE MEI LG V40 ThinQ Case with Tempered Glass Screen Protector, [Powerful Series] Shockproof Dustproof Scratch Proof Hybrid Metal and Silicone Gel High Impact Heavy Duty Case for LG V40 (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07J5J7TWL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_WMA-Bb8CK5D0F just above $20 USD its a great case if your looking for 360 protection but 1 downside is you trade protection for size...but it is a $800-$900 phone so it's a compromise I'm willing to take.

This case is wonderful. It is really slim while probiding impact protection and protects all the sides of the phone while the buttons still being pleasant to press. Also feels extremely nice. Couldn't ask more from a case as someone who doesn't drop their phone and has no need for the huge defender type cases. I just wanted an aesthetic nice feeling case that would proect from scratches inside my pockets, and this exceeds expectations. I have been using it with the Upscreen shield sceen protector which feels nice as well but does not stick to the curves and am currently awaiting a Ceilicious one, and am eyeking the Skinomi one as well.

Slightly on the pricey side but uag has their cases out for the v40 on their official site.
GETE 360 Degree Rotating Ring Holder with Kickstand (from Amazon title)
3rd case, and my favorite. Looks great, very easy to put on and take off. & love the built in rotating ring/kickstand. Only $6.96 on Amazon too.
I've had the Spigen tough armor. Good looking kickstand case BUT, the button covers are MUCH harder to press. Got too annoying after a while.
Then tried the Rugged case by Poetic. Very difficult to take apart and put on the first time. And also to make the collapsing kickstand work the first time. After that, while easier to operate, using the kickstand and taking cover on and off is still a bit of a hassle. Oh, and I had to cut off the flaps for the power cord hole and headphone jack covers. They were applying too much pressure to the base of my wires when plugged in. I was worried it would cause the connection to malfunction over time.
(sorry, no links guys. Newbies like me not allowed yet)
I bought the Ringke onynx case great case fits very well easy on and off. Used one on my v20 since it was new 2 years ago. Can't beat it for the price.

Black with clear back.
Had this case for two weeks and love it.

Will report back
Keepin' it slim! Cheap, but as effective as a skin can possible be. It ain't bullet-proof, and only comes in blue or black (for now?). Aleady dropped a couple times (low heights), ze-ro damage. Rim around screen is nice, only just high enough to be effectice. All cutouts are spot-on. Wireless charging like it's not even there.

Yes, I have found the best case for me is also the Tech21, I have it in black and midnight. Attached picture for midnight blue. Bought them directly from the tech21 site
Olny problem I had with the Tech21 case on my Droid Turbo, was that it held the heat in REAL well on the back. Too well. I cut many large holes, in a pattern, in it to allow direct-to-air ventalation.

I know darn well how 'old' that phone is. The problem started day-1 when I used the Tech21 on it. I got the phone about a month after official release. I seriously doubt Tech21 had any clue thier case would be such a good insulator. That phone was/is a beast, able to do so much at once, it got put through its paces by me. As such, the battery was also always pumping out, so probably why it was warm so easily. By the way, back of phone was the balistic nylon version. The case saved my proverbial bacon on more than one occasion. The cooling holes I put in it also helped against slippage in my hand.
