Auto-unlock works but auto-lock doesn’t? bad sensor? - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

I’m using an origami case with the tablet. The flap unlocks the screen just like it should when I flip it open. When I close it though, it doesn’t lock the screen. Sometime its fine as I’ve set the screen to turn off in 30 seconds. However, I noticed that XBMC keeps the screen on and I end up finding a dead battery the next day because the cover didn’t turn off the screen.
Do I have a faulty sensor? Its not the case because I tried another case/cover and it does the same thing.
Thanks

If the "other" case was the same make and model it doesn't prove much. There have been tons of issues with non-Samsung flip and book covers across multiple device forums. Go to Best Buy and try an official case. If it works it's not your sensor.

bought another case today, this time the poetic slimline. just like the origami case, it auto unlocks the screen when opening, but doesn't auto lock when closing. tried the case on a friends 10.1 2014 and auto locking work so its definitely my tablet and not issues with the case...i'm not sure if its hardware or software as i'm running cleanrom w/ bindroid kernel. any suggestions? its not annoying enough to sent in for a fix since i can simply use the GMD gesture to quickly turn off the screen but its still a mystery to me.
thanks
edit: flashed the bindroid rom and now the tablet auto sleeps and wakes with the cover...i guess it was the software...

[Q] Smart Cover Problem

I owned a smart cover for my galaxy note 8.0, it can work properly like sleep and wake.
But here's the problem come,
usually the cover is cover the front of the tablet, but when we use it, we will flip the cover to the back of tablet.
while the cover touched the back side of the tablet, it will also put it as sleep.
so, how to disable smart cover auto sleep?
i had tried the "Lock instantly with power key", but it required at least security of "pattern"
Any ideas?
Need help! THANK YOU!:good:
I guess something is wrong either with your cover or device - putting the cover on the back should never put the device to sleep.
I don't recall anybody reporting similar problems here, also the small sample we have at home (2 notes + 2 covers) behaves correctly.
The best thing (although it's probably easier said than done) would be to establish which one is malfunctioning and have it replaced if possible.
otoh I would also be interested in a way to disable the cover on/off function - mine is so sensitive, that even the slight move of the front part wakes the device, causing increased battery drain and making betterbatterystats readings useless.

I have seen that happen a lot with ipad cases. Its due to a poorly designed case.

It happens all the time to me. Put it nicely in the back. Not a single bit cover the front. Shake the device a little bit. The cover hits the back of the device, make some noise and screen turns off. Magic. As if the device can sense magnet even by its back. But when it sits really tightly that no space bw it and the case, problem solved by put on some sticky tape in the back.
Smart cover not smart at all T^T~ but original case without having that problem right?
Smart cover problem
Still looking for a way to disable the software that causes auto sleep/wake.
The problem with some covers is that they are not authentic from the manufacturers. The original Samsung case for Note 8/N5100 has the correct magnetic power in the case flap. The other covers have a magnet that is too strong so when the flap is in the back the magnet still effects.
I surgically cut the magnet out of the cheep cover and closed it back up. Disabled auto wake with the modification. I am guessing the same could be done with the original authentic Samsung case but it is hard to cut the little magnet out because its built in seamlessly so you cant see the exact location of the magnet.

Rock Flip Case Magnetic Screen Stays Awake

Hi All, I have been using this case for a few weeks and few times so far it appears the screen stays on for no reason, for example last night I looked at the battery before going to bed and it was 89% woke up 8 hours later and it was at 5% the on screen time was at 10 hours and I know I wasn't on my tablet for 10 hours. Can anyone suggest a fix? Can I disable the auto wake when I open and close the book case? Thanks in advance
The screen shud go off after a bit anyways even if the cover doesnt make the tablet sleep, make sure the screen timeout settings are on 2mins or something like that.
And about switching off the auto wake, I dont think theres a way but I could be wrong.

Yes it does sometimes when I closer the case. But other times I close it and it stays awake...
my poetic does the same thing. the hand strap adds a raised area at the home button and it constantly gets pressed. plus the lip that holds the tablet shut doesnt hold well and also causes wakes. i've gone back to my ivso case. this is my first dissapointmenr by poetic.

Disable magnetic lock / unlock?

Hi, I wanted to know if there is a way to turn off the automatic magnetic unlock feature of the 10.1 Note. I've got a case that sometimes will turn of (lock) my Note 10.1 when I don't want it to turn of, without closing the case itself.
Thanks in advance,
Ben
Same problem here......I even changed the case!!
Probably something that would require a kernel level change.
Check Under accessory settings. Tasker can probably disable the Magnetic Sensor

There is a xposed module called MagnetOff

From Poetic support, turning WiFi off normally takes care of the problem.

I've noticed on mine when I uncheck settings>general>acessory>daynote it won't lock when I close the cover. Worth a shot on yours!
I also have that feature disabled. The case also has a cut out for the home button. I traditionally keep the wifi disabled.

Hi all,
i'm running into, i believe, is the same issue.
When rotating or moving the tablet, the screen will automatically turn off and lock.
I've disabled the eye sensor, increased the screen time out, and disabled day note, with no luck.
Such a pain!
If i root this device, is there a guaranteed way around this 'feature'?
Well, i couldnt take it anymore and removed the magnet from the case.
Here's the case in question:
w w w.amazon.com/COD-Leather-Samsung-Galaxy-Edition/dp/B00EZB3EXU
what i did was to take another magnet and move it around the cover until it connected with the other magnet.
With a sharp exacto blade, i split the seam of the cover and pulled out the magnet (about 5mm in diamater).
It's all good now

I've read that the magnet may also interfere with the stylus pen. Will be getting a new keyboard/touchpad leather case soon but I didn't read whether it had a magnetic strap or not. Guess it won't bother me much and like the user above will probably find a way to remove it.

having the same problem with my note 10.1. Am using an after market cover which is quite good except that when the cover edges touch, the screen automatically switches off. Very frustrating. Wish samsung would provide a way to disable the magnetic sensor. I am rooted and even tried the magnet off xposed module but it doesn't work.
Any news about that problem ?? I have to disable the magnetic sensor !!

[Q] Cover flipped backwards turns off screen!

I was experiencing random screen shutoffs after fitting my galaxy note 10.1 (2014) for a new case.
It took a while before I finally realized that the random shut offs were being triggered by the case, more specifically, when the edge of my case came in line with the edge of the tablet, which is an awesome feature when you have the cover covering the front of the unit.
But the problem is it manages to shut off screen regardless of which side of the unit the cover is on, as long as the edge of the cover is aligned with the units edge. This can be quite frustrating when trying to read while holding the tablet in certain orientations.
Questions: I was wondering if anyone else has experienced similar issues with their cases/covers (a little research seems to indicate this is not an isolated issue and many, if not all, cases/covers suffer from this issue).
1) If you have not, which cases/covers do you use? Do these cases resolve the issue by never aligning the cover to the same position when flipped backwards as when flipped forwards (i.e. skewed slightly short of the edge when in backwards position)?
2) If you have experienced this issue, how have you addressed it? Can you disable the magnetic sensor?
3) Would weakening the magnet in the case perhaps ensure that it was only sensed in the forward position?

yes i have the same problem. pick up A generic folio type case for my P600. Case looks and feels great. Auto wake works brilliantly when I open the cover, but there is the problem of The screen turning off when I flip the cover over to the back and the magnetic edges meet. Dunno how to fix this yet. Tried the magnetoff xposed module but that doesn't seem to work.
I got the Moko slim case and the same thing happens, what I did to circumvent the problem was to put my screen cleaning cloth between the case and the tablet. This prevents the magnet from locking the screen when completely folded backwards, the only thing is that this method will block the camera with the cloth. For me this is not a problem I don't see myself using the camera on my tablet when I can use my SGS3's camera, and this way I never forget my screen cleaning cloth .
I've read about this on other devices on various covers as well. they think it mah be due to the magnet not being properly shielded. dunno any fixes other than get another case.
I hade a cover for my old Ipad and it all so turn off the Ipad when I flipped over the cover.
It did turn out the problem was with the magnet and after getting a new one, the problem was solved.
My poetic slimline work perfectly no issues at all. Love the look and feel, I do want a carry slevee tho for more protection if I wanna bring it out of the house. Or even just to store in the house. But overall love this case.

Get a piece of sheet metal (strip out a cheapie magnetic whiteboard , a few dollars at a variety store) cut to just less than the back of the tablet screen.
Cover it with a thin plastic film (to safeguard from cutting yourself)
It will adhere to the back of the screen magnetically and flatten the magnet's field
Now you can use the device with the keyboard tucked away behind the screen. (you may have to leave a small air gap say 5mm to 10 mm)
This does not affect the normal screen-keyboard functions when used conventionally
Same problem with Galaxy Tab A (Nougat)
There is an option in the tab to turn it off, but regardless what you choose, the tablet still responds to the magnet. Very annoying when you lay down your tablet flat. For now i just put something between the cover and the back of the tablet, like a handkerchief. This works for me, but ofcourse it's not a solution just a workaround. I'm still trying to find a solution.
Did you find any way to turn off the magnetic lock and unlock function? When I backfold my cover (aftermarket), it automatically locks my tab. Which is very irritating. I have Samsung galaxy tab S5e
There wasn't a good search result on a way to disable it via software or hardware mod so I thought I would post the solution I just did on my daughter's new tablet folio.
She has an old S3 Tab so the options are quite limited so figured modification was the only way. I ended up removing 3 magnets until I figured out which one actually did the on/off Hall effect. The smart thing to do would have been to use a magnet to find where on the tablet the Hall effect sensor was first, then remove just that magnet. The other magnets are for holding the clasp in place when the folio is open or closed.
I just cut an X over the magnet location, removed it, then filled it back in with hot glue. On her tablet, the Hall sensor was on the top left (fat arrow). It's annoying to have to do this but there's no other way. I tried the metal plate trick but that looked pretty bad and didn't always work.
Hope that helps someone

Samsung Keyboard cover has no wake up /turn off function?

I have just received my preordered Tab S4 with keyboard cover, but when I close the keyboard cover it does not turn off the screen. Also when I manually turn off the screen, close the keyboard cover and then open it, it does not turn on the tablet. Is there any setting for this in Settings? Or is this feature not available anymore?
Thx.
Keyboard cover does not have magnetic attachment that enables the auto-unlock... At least, that is already a thing on Tab S3 so it is not a big surprise to me if they ommited the feature on S4 as well.
thank you, this means the keyboard cover is useless for me. I tried with magnet and it does have magnetic response on the keyboard cover edge and also on the tablet edge, so I don't understand why it's not shutting down the tablet screen.
Curious if the standard cover has that type of support then.

I would suspect that if the keyboard cover can't do it the regular one won't do it either. As long as you don't have the screen time out value too high on the tablet, I don't see what the problem is. Mine is set to 1 minute and that works just fine for me.

the problem is that I had previous tablet S3 with regular book cover and was used to grabbing my tablet and by opening the cover the screen woke up automatically. Now it stays dark and I have to either press the power button or double tap on the screen. That's not acceptable. And yes, I do understand that "screen on" function can be set let's say for 1 minute, but that's not the point. This is really deal breaker for me. I will go to Best Buy tomorrow and try the regular book cover.
I have also called the Samsung support today, boy, they are clueless. Their customer support with heavy Chinese accent didn't even know that this tablet is out for public, so I hanged up and called again, this second guy told that my table is probably not sitting properly in the keyboard cover and I need to go to nearest Samsung center and they will adjust the position I don't believe what I hear......
The keyboard cover does't wake it upon opening, but when you connect it to the keyboard it starts. When not using the keyboard you can double tap the screen to turn on (Like LG phones), works well, takes about one second.

It appears that Samsung put the magnet in the wrong place in the keyboard cover. If you do not mount the tablet in the cover so that you can move the tablet up and down in the case - against the keyboard - you will find that with the tablet slid about an inch up from center that the magnet kicks in and the screen turns off.
I have a plain book cover, from Amazon that I paid $9.90 for that works PERFECTLY! For the price I paid for the keyboard cover, it just HAS to be RETURNED! Hopefully, Samsung will get their manufacturing screw-up resolved.
Thanks Jeffrey, that's interesting find with the magnet position. That's probably why Samsung support over the phone told me to try to move the TAB in the cover up and down. Anyway, I have returned the keyboard cover already and also bought just plain book cover that works very well and has the "ON" and "OFF" function.

The normal book case works fine. It's just the keyboard case that doesn't work with the tablet's cover detection.
It was the same story on the Tab S3. This product is broken by design. Still, at least they didn't forget to leave a hole for the camera this time. The manual of the keyboard cover for the Tab S3 pictured a gap for the device's camera, but the accessory itself didn't have one. If you wanted to take a photo, you had to remove it from its protective case, which kind of defeats the purpose of a protective case.

It seems like the keyboard case for both the S3 and S4 were fairly rushed, honestly.

I am pretty sure this is not the case. True, the keyboard cover has magnets. If you move the tablet around, those magnets may trigger wake up function as you observed, but that's not their intended purpose. They are there to hold the keyboard cover closed when the tablet is inserted. And they align perfectly with another pair of magnets in the tablet (you can just slide something like fork along the edge of the tablet/case to see whey there are). If you move the table as you suggested so they work as wake up magnets, then the cover will not stay closed.
I believe the official book cover has another magnet that triggers wake up function. The keyboard cover does not do have wake up by design, maybe because they expect you to mostly use it in keyboard mode and as was said before, when you attach the keyboard, that will trigger wake up. I agree that it's kind of a silly decision. I would like to have wake up at least as an option. But it's not faulty manufacturing.

It unfortunately is not a feature. the only way the keyboard shuts off the screen is if you were using the keyboard and then disconnect the keyboard from the tablet
I tried putting a small neodymium magnet on the outside of the case and it seems to work. Meaning, all you need is a magnet in the right position. That position seems to be right above where the bottom right edge of the tablet would sit when you mount it to use the keyboard. If only i could x-ray this thing to see if there is any sensitive components behind the plastic in that area, I would drill it and embed my magnet there. Its plenty thick enough to flush mount the magnet there...
I think that's not the way the Keyboard Cover works.
The Keyboard Cover is only for people who always use it.
I own one, actually 2 as I also bought for my wife, and to automatically TURN ON your Tab is by connecting it to the keyboard.
And to automatically TURN OFF your Tab is by disconnecting it from the Keyboard.
That's my 2 cents...I hope it helps
I've had the Tab S4 since before the Android 9 update and had both the Samsung Keyboard case and the regular book case and both would wake and put the tablet to sleep when opening and closing it BEFORE the Android 9 update. After it only seems the book case will do the wake/sleep functions but not the keyboard case. I think it's just software and it's really frustrating because that update has been out for months and nothing's changed I still have to manually put the tablet to sleep after closing it which defeats the purpose of the magnets built into both devices (keyboard case and tablet).
