[Q] Help Battery Life - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

So i got myself the new note 10.1 2014 Editon .. the first thing that shocked me is the very poor battery life ... its half as much as my old note 10.1 ...
i got down to 23 % in 4,5 hours [screen on] ... just browsing the web ...
with my old one I still get about 8 hours same percentage [screen on] [ dropping 10 % per hour ] ... while the 2014 one is dropping like 20 % an hour ...
the new note burns twice as much battery when screen is on .. is that normal ? i thought battery would improve not divided by 2 -.- ...
I already disabled all the bloatware I could without root ... hell im thinking about returning that thing.. since i need 3-4 hours to charge to get around 4 hours screen time ... its not enough for me...
sure its more responsive and has better screen ... but really i have battery save mode turned on and only about 20 % screen brightness ... i read something about 9 hours battery time surfing web ... like the old one can handle so i believed that ....
any advice what could cause this ? t i use low screen brightness and mostly surfing the web / youtube / facebook and stuff......
if there is anyone who had the old note and the new note like me i would like to hear what you experienced in terms of battery life ...

You propably should return your tab. I'm getting usually 9 -10 hours on screen on time sometimes even 11.

Mine was the same for the first few weeks, could stretch it out to 7 hours max. Those first few weeks I was constantly faffing and changing the look and not even really using it for anything useful. I had read not to leave it plugged in too long after 100% was achieved, then one night I had to leave it overnight to charge. At this time I also installed nova.
Next battery life was nearly 12 hours, with 4 hours HD films streamed off my NAS, 2 hours 3d gaming, and the rest on chrome.
Now I get between 9 and 12 hours consistently. All of this without power saving, TBH I dont find power saving saves much power on this, made a 5-10% difference on my note 2 but with this keeping the screen brightness down is key. I keep mine low to lowest most of the time, only turning it up in the day. I have also started using reading mode on chrome and email which is what I use the most, looks a touch odd at first but you soon get used to it.
Give it a long charge after running it down to 5%.

ok thx i will try that ... i also use reading mode and very low screen brightness .. about 15-20 & anything higher is too bright indoors... do u think nova launcher impacts battery life ? im getting near 7 hours max. now probably today ... updated my browser ... but still it will be abit less than my odler note ... im used to different screen color since im also usign flux on pc ... I find it really relaxing for the eyes ... but i feel like the new screen is straining my eyes more than the old one .. even though reading mode is on ... its strange isnt it supposed to be easier for the eyes when screen resolution is higher ? maybe it needs time to get used to it ?

ok guys found the culprit ... i was watching some flash videos and now noticed they cause this insane battery drain ... 10 % in 10 minutes .... thats really strange though because on my old note 10.1 that isnst the case ... I also noticed mediaserver is running at the time flash runs .... maybe thats normal ...... without playing flash videos via the browser i now get about the same battery life as my old note .... guess i need to avoid playing flash on browser then .... ;( .. or do u guys have any idea ?

Restrict (don't throw it off completely) using flash, and if videos you watch are long just download them (I recommend Videoder). Try throwing it off (assuming it's an app) using a root app (I'M NOT SURE ABOUT DOING IT SO TRY SEARCHING THE INTERNET FOR INFO)

JPC battery life

I know it ibeta before you all start on me, however 15 minutes of web browsing = 10% loss of battery. At that rate my phone will be dead an hour and half of web browsing
When the phone is just on stand by battery life is fine
Hope they fix this when the "official" release comes out
Wow where did you learn maths?

the screen needs lots of power, processor needs to,
everything needs the power
look it is same like brand new commputer (whit very good graphic card, processor, memory, MB) - you need good and strong power supply without it is crap ...
if you need good long working phone buy something else like :hmm: i dont know what maybe NOKIA with small BW display
no offence
I noticed on the JPC the battery drains soooo fast!
did a full charge while the phone was off today and also deleted the battery stats.. lets see if it improves

I love my SGS and will not being going back to Nokia, also love andriod - just hoping the official release will let me have use for one full day - not too much to ask I dont think
I get 2 days of moderate to high usage with JPC. I think it uses less battery because the GSM signal is better, but the screen uses more power, is always over 90% in battery stats.

For me it all comes down "display on" time.
if using 3G/edge i get 4,5h
if wifi then 5,5h (no difference if im using it during 1 day or 4 days)
JPC is same as JP3 or JMx
Screen brightness
Just thought I'd say, incase you didn't know, the web browser has it's own brightness setting. That could be killing the battery.
I, for one, already set the brightness to the first level for all aplications that have brightness setting, and still the display sucks the battey like crazy, at list with JPC. With other FW it drops even to 40%.

Battery drain was ridiculous with me. The first night I went to sleep I remember my phone was nearly fully charged, when I woke up at morning it had used around 50%... that is, 50% of the battery for around 6 or 7h just sitting in IDLE! When I actually USED the phone it could barely handle 10h with a full charge, and that's with very moderate usage. I had to leave the phone charing all the time to survive a day with it (charging in my car, charging every time I stopped near an AC outlet, etc). And yeah, the funny thing was noticing how exaggeratedly high the screen battery drain was, even though I wasn't using the screen all that much...
Some other symptoms of the high battery drain:
-Charging the phone took FOREVER with the phone being used, took a LOT of time with the phone sitting Idle, but if I turned the off the battery would actually charge very fast... that proved that the phone was draining so much energy even the AC charger (or USB outlet) couldn't effectively charge the battery while supplying power to the phone...
-The phone got HOT very easily...
How did I solve it?
Well, yesterday I decided I would reflash my device. I did a full reflash (as I always do) including a re-repartion. Now the funny thing that I noticed was that my phone actually wouldn't flash! It would always crash at the Galaxy S welcome screen... I have never flashed it using my notebook (since I'm traveling), but I used the exact same procedure I always use with my desktop back home, for some reason it wasn't working. Maybe some corrupt file? I re-downloaded ALL files (that is, Odin with the 803 pit file, and the JPC files)...
For my surprise, this time my phone hanged in a green screen, and it was really scary. I even thought perhaps the Nokia USB cable I was using was causing some kind of incompatibility problem, but that would make no sense at all... so I entered the recovery menu in my phone and reset EVERYTHING, and tried flashing it one LAST time (this time closing ALL background apps in my notebook, to avoid any problems)... and there it went, a perfect flash, as easy as they go with my desktop PC back home.
1st thing I did was a hardreset, and then I reflashed it again with Doc's RomMod V2 (was using V1 the day before), and new hardreset in the sequence. Then I changed as little as possible in the phone configurations, I just turned everything off (GPS, wifi, and even the data connection through the power button shortcut), and went to sleep...
For my surprise, the next day I checked the phone's battery use, it had drained only ~4-5% for more then 10hours, this means it would, at least in theory, be able to last for days and days in this setup...
So I installed my apps again (not that I have many), did lagfix, turned widgets and network connection back on... and it has been working like a breeze, although battery drain can still be considered high, it's nowhere close to being as bad as it was before I flashed it, now at least the battery will last a full day with a charge @ my standards of usage, that's good enough for me...
One thing I did change, I remember my screen setup was always at 10/30min for shutdown, I left it like that because I'm always using the phone in situations where the screen will constantly shut down at my face, and that annoyed me... well, this time I actally left the stock 30 seconds for screen shutdown, not sure if it has anything related, but one of the things I noticed before was that my IDLE battery-drain was as high as you'd expect from a phone that had it's screen on all the time... maybe some bug makes the phone drain screen power even with the screen turn off, let's say if you have the 30min turn-off config, your screen will continue to drain power for 30min (and there you have the reason for so much screen draw in the stats), even though the screen is turned off... despite my hardware knowledge telling me that a black screen should NOT be draining power from your phone battery, you never know how far a software bug can fck things up hardware-wise, so I wouldn't be surprise if that actually DID happen...
I could even try setting my screen back to 30min-turnoff just to check if the battery drain will go back to insane levels.. but the fact is that I'm scared of messing it up again, it's working fine the way it is, why mess it up? I figured out some things that get messed up with this phone appear to only get fixed with a new firmware flash, and I really don't feel like having to flash my phone every two days...
Either way, I hope others here can fix their battery drain... it's just my tip: try reflashing, leave everything as stock as you can (only thing I did was Doc's RomMod v2, and later Ryan ZA's lagfix, none of them seem to be related to JPC's battery drain), and see if it helps...
wth I can only get 3.5 hours max
Sent from my phone so excuse the spelling errors
After a week of using JPC I don't see any real difference in battery usage from the original stock rom and JP3, I charge the phone every second night ( battery is usually around 25% at this point).
My usage isn't that high, I have a couple of notifications running and a weather widget that updates hourly, its my alarm clock, my mp3 player to and from work (about 90 minutes a day), I make and receive 4-5 calls a day and send and receive a dozen texts a day, I check face book 3-4 times a day and on a daily basis someone gets a 10-15 minute demonstration of the beauty of this phone(note: don't let a taxi driver play with your phone whilst in heavy traffic, even if it gets a confession that it makes his iphone look like a piece of crap).
As far as screen time outs are concerned, I set mine at 1 minute but always turn the display off manually when I finish doing something with it including after I have started the music player (btw I use bluetooth headset to listen to music but not for phone conversations).
The highest display percentage I have seen is about 85% but the is usually tied in with using gps or browsing, on a day I don't use gps or browsing display is much lower, on a day that the display is pretty much off it drops to about 10-15% usage.
This phone is the first, of the several pda/smart phones I have owned over the years, that I haven't had to charge every day.
Id battery usage is not a problem for me on JPC, 8hrs idle ( sleeping ) and I still got 100% started to use the phone and it rapidly dropped.. now im playing a 2hr movie and see if i can get it to loop for 2-3 times before it shuts off.. if it reaches 6hrs then i would consider the battery usage the same.
Please turn off the GPS and a-GPS....
You will get a much better battery life.....

Impressive battery life

I have been very impressed with the battery life I've been getting on my Nexus. the talk time has been much higher than any phone I've owned. Here are a few screenshots of my battery life. These two days are pretty much my normal day (lol yeah I talk a lot on the phone).
The first post will be the day that about 50% of the time I was on wifi.
The 2nd post will be screenshots from a day of being connected to hsdpa for the entire day (no wifi at all).
My setup: I use push email, facebook sync, auto brightness, gps on, bluetooth on.
Also, when the phone first came I charged it completely then ran the battery down until the phone shut off. I then charged it completely without removing it from the charger.
Below is the day where I was connected to wifi about half the time:
These screenshots show the next day where I used no wifi at all and was connected to hsdpa the entire time.
I have had mine for 2 days, and I have to say it seems to have pretty good life as well, compared to my Atrix and Note. After reading about all the gripes here,
I was expecting the worst. This battery will more than get me through everything I need to do with it in my day, but I suppose it all depends on what you do with the phone.

Coming from a G2x with a terrible 10 hour battery life, anything I get out of this is freaking fantastic compared to it! I Just wish the devs start getting out some UVed kernels so I can make it longer through the day! I consider myself a heavy user/texter (girlfriend ) and so I'd like to get through the whole day (~18 hours) without a charge I must say, I got to 16 hours yesterday and I was really pleased with that, never had a stock rom last so long without any tweeks!

Not to shabby haha

mysterioustko: I think you're usage is a bit different to the average user. With all that talk time you're using the screen a lot less. It seems the screen sucks a lot of power, and if you're not using it often a full charge lasts 4 to 6 hours longer.

I typically average between 1-2 hours of screen time on an average day. But I talk A LOT each day lol. I'm impressed with the talk time because I've yet to see a phone besides this one that can go 6 hours of talk time in the real world when connected to hsdpa. Also, if you think about it, 1.5 hours of screen time is decent use. It's not a massive amount of use, but it's definitely not like it's getting no use. All in all I have been pleased with the battery life.
I don't know about you guys but im very disappointed in the battery life. With wifi turned on the entire day and no calls, just browsing and chatting on google talk, i got 3 hours 54 mins of screen on time before the phone reached 12% battery. I think thstss pretty horrendous. I was hoping for 7 hours or something of on screen time. My galaxy tab 10.1 has spoiled me i guess. Illl live with it because theres no other android phone im aware of that will give me more, but im kinda bummed about it.
My iPhone 4 has insane battery life... I cant imagine having less. Hopefully they sell larger batteries + backplates for the Galaxy Nexus?

Same here tbh. And the really frustrating part is, I only have 2G where I live so I was hoping to see really great battery life. Hasn't been the case so far though.
However having said that, just last night I flashed XXIK6 and while it's still very early to say for sure, it "appears" that battery life has significantly improved for me. Currently sitting on 91% after 3.5 hours with very, very light usage, IE: 15-20 mins screen on, 15 min phone calls, etc. Nothing to write home about sure, but way way better than before. It would normally be around 80% by now.
It's really sad when the very first thing you do after unlocking your phone is to go into setting to check your battery. Wish I could stop obsessing and enjoy this marvelous device without having to worry about it.
What did you guys do after getting the phone.
Did you charge it all the way to full before use, use and charge at the same time, or let it discharge all the way and then charge it to full?
Thanks.
I would have to say that the GN has the best battery life of any of my previous android phones. (G1, N1, Sensation) These things are very subjective though.

Yeah, and I don't want to lose the thinness of this gorgeous phone with an extended battery, but 4 hours of screen on time? Anyways, can you let us know how that radio works out, I'm not expecting much, but still curious. If it is noticeably better, I will try to unlock+root this phone. I'm just a little scared to brick this 700$ device.
I'm just waiting for mod of web browser that will invert colours. Black backgrounds and white text ...that would extend battery life significantly. I swapped colours on xda app and pulse reader only browser left ha ha

Yup, it's under accessibility in browser settings. Great if you read mainly text-only sites since it inverts image colours as well
2-3% per hour idle
I did a benchmark this afternoon for about 8 hours.
ITL41F rom, rooted + dcm kernel, otherwise stock. bluetooth, HSDPA, 1 gmail sync, and a few background sync that is very light.
idle the phone in home for 8 hours. the battery drops about 2-2.5% per hour consistently.
how long does it last with 'constant use' though?... from fully charged, to then having the screen on the whole time & doing web browsing, video watching, downloading, etc... (with data on, not wifi)

[Q] Battery Life

I'm a bit confused here and hope someone can clear it up for me. Some of the reviews are saying the battery life is under eight hours. However the review from Androidpolice is saying he got 22hrs heavy use and with normal use it could be almost 2 days. Can someone tell me what the battery life is really like?
I suspect the shorter times are referring to performance in a battery run down test where a HD video is put on a loop and played until the device dies.
I have only had mine for 2 days and this is not normal use because of downloads etc... but I believe I'm getting 8-10 hours out of the 2014 edition where I was getting 6-8 hours out of last years Note 10.1. I still have last years model as it is going to ebay soon so I know there is an improvement!
I'm hoping it lasts 9-10 hours at least. Coming from an iPad, I have a feeling the battery life will be one of the worst things about android for me.
I'm getting around 8h. battery life
really enough juice for me
Hello, i am a engineering student and i am very happy about my Battery life.
I Use my P-605 to take notes in the university.
For example, on a day with three lectures.
First Lecture, i use LectureNotes to mark something in the PDF scriptum and write down a few notes.
Second and third, creating a whole Entry which causes that the screen is nearly 95% of the 1,5h Lecture active.
After that, driving home with the bus with listening to music and checking facebook and xda.
The Energy saver made was enabled (because it was implemented for Such reasons) and screen on Auto (+0, +1).
After that day, 70%, not bad, or not?
I used some of the tricks mentioned here in an xda threat to increase the Batterytime.

That's about what I get of screen on time.
At this exact moment I'm on pace for about 9 and a half hours with 2 days on time
Sent from my SM-P600 using Tapatalk 4
8-9 hours screen time is what mine gets. This is with a 1 minute time out and 20% brightness. If you use the default 30 second time out and auto brightness, you may be able to squeeze out another hour or so.
Go by screen time and not total uptime. One person's "heavy use" is someone else's "casual". I'll use the Note for 5 or 6 hours straight. That will get me down to 30% or thereabouts. As such, I'll never get 2 days out of it or an iPad.
Playing any type of game, even ones that aren't graphically demanding like clash of clans or plants vs zombies 2 drains the battery very very fast, i could lose 50% in 2-3 hours.
Just about hitting 8 with all the extras disabled and just browsing the web and youtube

it really depends on what you do. i watch movies using plex, browse, play games for about 4 hours a day. i recharge my tablet every 3 days. at the time it still has 20%. also note that when it is in stand by mode it loses some charge

i want to buy a note 10.1 2014 but i have concerns about its battery life , i don`t know this is real or not but i heard it drain 10-20% in 8 hours of stand by , i have an ipad mini 1 and i get as it shown in image
my Q is can i get the same battery life with the note 10.1 2014 as my ipad mini 1 or not , plz confirm that because this issue will be a deal breaker for me

this tablet has a powerful screen.. and pressure sensore.
i am using this tablet for more than 1 year and its really awesome. when the screen is on the device uses more battery and its normal.
but when it is on sleep it can use the battery more than 2 days... 3220 mAh is very powerful battery for this tablet.
with CM 12 (Android 5) it will be best tablet i have seen and used.
I get 11hrs screen time from 100% to 1%. This includes a LOT of youtube videos however my brightness is pretty low. Standby time is good for me and nowhere near 10% a day let alone 8hrs. I reckon its about 3-5% a day for me max.

Do you use the stock firmware or a custom rom , because i am already purchased the tablet couple days ago and i am never have 11 hours screen on time yet
Till now i am get 6-7 hours screen on time in 2 days after unplugg from 100% to 15%, is that the normal ratio ?
Stand by and useage, seem pretty ill defined parameters. Especially to compare android to apple battery use. Does standby mean total on time, or total on time minus screen on, or total on time minus certain heavy use operations(which prob also includes screen on time)? Do you know purely screen on time for your ipad mini? That might be the best, first comparison to the note 10.1 ( since note does have a big screen but also big battery-8220 mah) that would be useful number wise.
Im not going to try but it would be interesting to know how long note 10.1 lasts in sleep mode only. I use mine to much to test only that. So ill see if I have any screens of my useage that I have made(prob now deleted), but I will also test to see how long I get with my average use next charge cycle (reported in screen on vs total up time).
Also if its is 10% in 8hrs (standby/sleep) thats still 80 hrs or over 3days. At the worst you say 20%,thats 40 hrs, a little less than 2 days. If those are true indicative number for the note 10.1 that represent a decent number of average users then your experience should fall somewhere in between, making it close to your experience with your ipad.

If those are true indicative number for the note 10.1 that represent a decent number of average users then your experience should fall somewhere in between, making it close to your experience with your ipad.

in ipad standby time means the time since you unplugged your device including running and sleeping time , usage time means the time ipad actually running = screen on time on android
i don not know if 6-7 hours of screen on time on my new note will be persistent or it will increase to 10-11 hours like the fellow up there after the rush period of usage of the the new device , anyway i will be very satisfied if it reach 9 hours :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:

Ok makes sense. Normally I use my note 10.1 without always fully charging and always turn it off at night. Ive tested by fully charging and leaving it on at night, so that it is in sleep/standby then. Last night I put it away with 29% battery and over 10hrs later it was on 28%. :victory: See screen shots. You can't actually read 10 hours, but if you look at total uptime and see how flat the battery curve is for half of that time you can tell I'm being very reasonably accurate. My screen use is 5hrs (screenshot) and that is what really took most of my juice. I was mostly watching 1080p youtube.
Almost the same here , hope for two or more hours after lollipop update inshaallah
Mine is the same about 1-2% if left on standby
Id suggest flashing a custom rom with a custom kernel. They figured out how to get 0.5-2% on stand by. Its alot of the bloatware that comes with the tablet and background apps which are running. Google apps also have a heavy drain on the battery during stand by. Using an app like Titanium back up to freeze or uninstall the apps will help with this problem.

Note 10 plus snapdragon 855 battery draining need suggestion

Hello everyone
I just purchased 256g 12gb ram snap 855 note 10 plus last month. But after the android 10 update my phone seems to have a bad battery life.
Its like 50 mins screen time and battery is at 82 percent.
Brightness is 50%ish fhd+ nothing in background only usual apps.
It seems.like going down by %1 every 2 or 4 minutes. I watched alot of reviews and it was not going down so fast.
Id Be glad if experienced people helps out. Im thinking to replace this.
I watched a lot of reviews too.
Unplugging the phone makes it loose like 3-4% in 2 minutes. Then i think with a common use you can get 1hr of SOT every 25%-30% with some basic tweaks.
I think the reviews are based on a battery starting from 100 to 0% without pausing the screen. You can get 10-11%/hr while the screen is on, which is pretty good depending of what you're doing.

Thanks for the reply,
Well people talk about having 8-10 hours of SOT so, this concerned me like hell. when i click battery options, it shows me that still learning patterns tho. Could it be as if it's just updated to Android 10?
Something is definitely wrong. You might want to factory reset it, and start from scratch. Hopefully that resolves it.

Dont be stupid believing sot of 8-10 hrs.... Those video showing coz they never lock the screen. Normal user will turn on off the screen.. hence eventually will use more juice. If a phone can last u 6 hrs... U be more happy...
