I'm sure we all know that the battery life on the G Nexus is pretty awful, so let's all go star and comment on the issue so we can get Google's attention!

Hmm, compared to my EVO 4G, I barely had to do anything to this to get the battery life to be very good (estimate 100 -> 0 = 15hours). Maybe I use the screen less than you guys though.

At home, no LTE connection. 5.5 Hours.

On GSM.. battery life is stellar.. keep in mind, like the person who posted above me that if you are in a low signal area your battery will be destroyed searching for signal..

Yeah I don't have LTE where I am either, but I have it forced to CDMA only. Android OS is my battery killer. I usually get around 6 hours before having to plug it up.
I really think that if enough people starred the issue then it will get someones attention! (Crosses fingers)

Hi,
This high Android OS Keep awake time is not specifically about battery life issue.
We are discussing the fact that, because of this, the phone is constantly waking up (wake up state).
And that's should not happen while the device is turned off, for example.
Yes, of course, this will relate to battery life at the end. But, that's not the point of the discussion / bug as everybody has different preference of battery life. One can say 12 hours is enough, while others may say 24 hours is not enough, according their usage pattern.

Yeah I don't think that is the case... even after rebooting it stills is draining even when idle...

This is nothing new. Android is a batt hog, plain and simple. You think google doesnt know this already. Its an "acceptable" item. Where they know about it & it's not the best, but thats what they get if they want a phone thats constantly using the network, has a large HD screen and is so damn good to look at you wont want to put it down.
Quit itchin and get on with it....

I have the extended battery from Verizon so keeping that in mind, my phone lasted 14 hours with 10% remaining with normal use. I stopped testing since I had to go to sleep
By the way I have Beweather and Facebook updating every hour and Pulse updating every 6 hours. I also have endgadget, Cnet, Google currents, Flickr and 500px updating.

So far battery life is a bit lower than I would like but not to a horrible state. definitely going to need the extended battery though. playing around today to see how fast I can kill it.
can't get photo to upload now though for some reason but got 2 hours 10 minutes with 12% remaining. would kinda like to see that as a stat added to phone reviews, minimum battery life. Max is fine but I'd rather know how long it will last with power using.

I'd say battery life was less than great on 4.0.1 but 4.0.2&.0.3 its pretty damn good now my idle usage is next to nothing. 2 days ago i had 47 minutes talk time, 1h38m screen on and about 13-15 hours of idle and still had almost 40% left at midnight.

I think you don't understand.
This is not about battery life, but the high Android OS Keep awake time. Which means your phone was awake when it's turned off.
Obviously, this doesn't happen on my HTC Desire, nor Nexus S with Gingerbread.

I can't speak for battery life on the LTE Nex as i have the HSPA+ version...I've found that the battery life is quite excellent after a few charge cycles...Have gotten 21hrs on a single charge with normal usage...if i'm watchin vids or playin games then im putting my phone on the charger cuz the screen really does eat up battery alot.

Hello all,
First off thanks to everyone in the community for all of the great articles and information. I struggled with which device to get but settled on the GN. When it arrived I kind of paniced because it wouldn't update from 4.0.1. Thanks to all of you I ended up finding out that I received a YAKJUDV version. With a little research I found out how to change to YAKJU and now all is well.
Not only is "all well" but "all is great"! I am running straight stock 4.0.4, no root, no custom kernel, nada. I do not have any issues with wake from sleep as some have reported, and my battery life is fantastic. As of right now I am on 1 Day 16 Hours and I still have 36% battery remaining. I know that battery life is very subjective but I have browsed some websites, downloaded 10-15 apps. Played a little angry birds. Connected to my job's Cisco VPN and did some RDP work. I have 3 Gmail accounts set to push with calendar & contact sync. I have had Wifi and Bluetooth enabled the whole time. I also have my google voice and google plus account active. I keep the screen on auto brightness. Lastly, I have about an hour or so of talk time during this period. Ohh, I forgot I also have had the Jawbone Companion app installed and connected to my Era, I read a few comments on some sites where users reported the app caused noticeable battery drain, this was not my experience.
In closing, thanks again for all of the info!

that sounds like incredible battery life. what was the screen on time? i take it on WiFi the entire time?
either way, its refreshing to hear/see a thread praising this phone.. i am in the same boat as you, i am completely happy with my nexus...absolutely love it. however i had to root/ROM to get to this point but still very happy (i was going to root/ROM anyway)

For me crap battery life at 4.0.1 (and probably battery wasn't calibrated). Once updated to yakju 4.0.4 battery life was much much better. Other than the "screen at low brightness look crap issue" and not too loud speaker (Nokia phones which I came from was DAMN loud), overall very happy with this phone. The ROMs and kernels for most of the cases JUST WORK. And the fact people ask me what phone am I holding is an epic thing when you see people around you having iPhones and S2. May send mine in for a replacement as the top part of the screen has this weird greenish colour. Noticeable when keyboard is in landscape.

I am not running any widgets, most of my browsing was done over wifi.
I ordered a GNex about 2 weeks ago and used it for about 36 hours and returned it. That one had abysmal battery life. In hind sight, I wish I would have looked closer at the firmware/version type with that one so I would have some sort of reference.
I am kind of pissed that I ordered the extended battery thinking my battery life was going to be ****. I honestly dont think i need it.

LOL, i don't know! I am still trying to drain the battery for the first time, I dont want to plug it in yet!
I'll check next time i charge it.

did you put it in the charger for short periods of time? if it doesn't get a full charge at once it doesn't reset the timer. you can tell when you are looking at the battery option and the map goes down back up then down again lol... I'm honestly thinking that's the case

GSM nexus battery life WAY better than Verizon Nexus

My two Brothers just picked up the unlocked GSM Nexus off the Play/Market store last week. One has it running on pre-paid T-Mobile, the other on Straight Talk ATT, and their battery life is ****ing unbelievably better than what three of us get on the Verizon Nexus, and we are not using 4G/LTE at all.
Both my Brothers use their phone at work, no Wifi just the 3G signal, and they both text me this week telling me battery life %. Right now after 4+ hours unplugged they both around 85%-90%, not using it except sending several texts and reading websites. And after a work day unplugged for like 10 hours they both have like 70%-75% left.
Now myself, my Wife and buddy have the Verizon Nexus, my Wife barely uses her phone at all, and at lunch time will be at like 70% battery left, and after getting home still unplugged for 10+ hours she's at like 45%. Where my Brothers with same use would be at 70%.
My buddy has the same as my Wife's usage, no WiFi wither, not using phone much and his phone is at like 40% after 12 hours or so. Both of them have 4G/LTE off and GPS off, and no sync on.
I use my phone a lot for work sales calls, and I am in the red by like 4:00pm, I get maybe 7 - 9 hours of use on a busy workday.
My Brother on the GSM T-Mobile, said after 23 hours his phone was at 45% battery life, and that was him using it quite a bit, dozens and dozens of texts, lots of websurfing, tons of e-mails. Our Verizon Nexus would never get that kind of battery life.

It is known. What really matters though is screen on time.

I agree screen time is crucial. But my Wife uses her Verizon Nexus very little at work and by time she comes home is at like 45% battery after about 12 hours or so. My Brother on GSM Nexus after 12 hours and using it a bit more would be at 70% battery.
That is a HUGE difference in battery life with very similar use.

do they work in the same building?
if your wife works in a place with not as good of a signal, i expect her battery to drain faster as the phone is trying to get more signal.

I installed AOKP 5 on her phone last night. Her battery seems much better. Unplugged for 7 hours at 80% battery now. That is a major upgrade. But again she barely uses her phone at all during work, pretty much just sits there. Where my Brother with same use today is at 90%.
I am running CM9, unplugged for 6 hours at 35% battery, but I use my phone a lot during work. Have 2.5 hours screen time. Tons of texts...lots emails...several phone calls....web surfing.

With GSM you can expect around 3 hours screen time and tons of standby time.
The standby time is great, but the screen time is somewhat mediocre to me.

Some days my battery just gets ate and others (like today) I'm having good battery. Usually I'm finding that apps are open in the background even after I hit back to "close" them. So if I keep up on the "Recents" menu and swipe it all away, I see an improvement.
I'm waiting for the MIUI styled "X" that closes ALL recent apps in one strike. Every little bit helps. An older version of Gummy (x.8) I had insane battery life. From 8am-3pm I would still have like 75%. I'm running LiquidSmooth right now and at 3pm I am at 60%. This was with 40 emails and 2 20min calls. No texting today
But LiquidSmooth has more options and is much faster then Gummy, so IMO the small battery difference is a good trade off. Later Gummy versions seems to consume more battery while lacking in the features.
AOKP never ran well for me in either the performance or battery department. Seemed to be laggy AND battery lousy. However I haven't played with it in a few weeks.
I too keep 4G disabled but I also have WiFi on all day (I never turn it off). I also use "Bluetooth On Call" which enables my bluetooth while on a call, so I can use a wireless headset. It automatically disables bluetooth, but I'm sure it consumes more battery then a normal call.
I only have 40minutes of screen ON time too. Mostly quick checks of emails. A few turns of WordFued and DrawSomething. I do work in a dungeon with little/no signal, which I suspect eats it up.

But it depends what you do in that screen time. If you do a lot of gaming and browsing with 3 hours it's great. If you just swipe through the home screen and send a couple text message with 6 hours of screen time, not so great.

A cool test would be to turn on airplane mode and play a movie. I'd be interested to see if it has something to do with programming vs hardware.
Then the same test with 3G.
Both really need to be setup similarly, same wallpaper, apps, etc, to really get a good measure of comparison

This isn't a news flash. Its been pretty well known.

Well, yes and no. Gaming does use more cpu and such than just flipping through your home screens so I see where your coming from and agree to an extent.. But also consider that display is almost always the biggest battery consumer in battery stats, regardless of what you are using it for.

If you switch the 4G off then it will be a different story.

If you really want to compare the battery on all those phones, at the end of the day have your wife, your buddy, your brothers, etc...send you a screen shot of their battery stats. There are so many reasons why your battery life can change, and unless you are following someone all day then you really won't know the full picture.
And yes I usually say screen on time is a better "quick" comparison of battery life. Someone who has a display timeout of 1 min compared to someone with 5 min will have significantly different battery results, even with similar usage.

LTE is a *****.

CDMA radio technology is a bit worse on battery than GSM, I'm betting that's where most of the difference comes from (LTE excluded obviously). With my screen on constantly, I've gone over 5.5 hours of screen on time before on my VZW GNex with about 50% 3G/50% WIFI usage. Again though, that was almost constant screen on from 100% to 0% battery. I've also watched the entirety of LOTR: Return of the King Extended Cut (4:20 minute run time) with my phone while also having 2 or so hours of standby on one charge, but I was in airplane mode for the majority of the movie watching. The screen is absolutely the worst battery killer by leaps and bounds and that will hold true no matter the variant.

True, it always is the biggest battery consumer as anything you do on the phone requires the screen to be on. But it also depends on what kind of users we are. If you use your phone mainly for calling and texting and emails, then 4+ hours of screen time with a total of 16 hours should be good and doable. But if you do a lot of gaming, browsing web, tasks that are heavy then 3hours+ on screen time with a total of 10-12 hours on the chart is pretty good I think.

I agree with a previous poster, screen on time is all that matters. That's why I got an ugly humpbacked Trexcell 3800 battery. Now I get 5 1/2 hours of screen on time on my Verizon GNex. Great when compared to my old time of about 2 hours.

None of us on the Verizon Nexus have 4G on. We all leave LTE off.
So why is the GSM version getting substantially better battery life ? Seems to be at least a 25% difference, if not 1/3rd better battery life on the GSM Nexus.

See my post above. CDMA radios are slightly worse on battery than GSM radios.
Like I said, I've seen 5.5 hours of screen on before once and 4+ many many times. I highly doubt the difference in battery between my VZW Nexus and a GSM Nexus under constant use from 100% charge would be more than +/-5% in either direction so the difference is somewhere in the standby times of the two devices ie. GSM vs. CDMA radio.

AMAZING battery life on gsm Gnex

This is from my first full charge cycle. Completely stock. Amazing! This is 3.5 hours screen on and 2 hours voice calls. It's not letting me upload those screen shots for some reason.

Yeah mine has been pretty solid as well. Yesterday after 17hrs I was still at 35% which is better than most Android phones I've had.

I really think that galaxy nexus standby is amazing but the screen is the only thing that really drains the battery. So if you don't use it heavily, you should be fine. I use my nexus moderately and I still get through a day with about 40% left.

Pretty good... i find voice calls and cell signal to be main battery drain cause on Sprint's turtle 3G network.
With 2100mah extended battery, 15% juice left unplugged at 8:30am, replugging in at 10pm, 2.5hr screen, 1hr gps, 30min voice

Here are the results from my 2nd full charge cycle:
40+ hours off charger; 4.5 hours screen-on time. Remarkably good.

How are you getting such good battery life? i can't seem to even last a whole work day, requiring me to charge before I leave the office.
I just got my replacement, so hopefully it will be better this time around.

I use 30-40% brightness. Black wallpaper. Other than that, nothing special. I only have 1 gmail account syncing, unlike some of the people on here that have 3 or 4 email accounts syncing. I also only have like 2-3 widgets running (beautiful widgets smaller home, audiomanager pro, astrid, and maybe one or two others). And most of the screen on time is doing relatively simple tasks like web browsing, reading xda, google talk, etc. Nothing too terribly intensive like video.
Based on my experience though it seems like pretty much anybody except the heaviest of users should be able to get at least a full day's use out of it, and lighter users should easily be able to get 2.
Is yours GSM? I hear the Vzw/Sprint ones get far worse battery life.

I agree. I ended a day with ~70% battery left, and most of my usage was the screen (~30 minutes or something). I haven't had any issues with my battery dying on me yet. If I left the screen off all day, I could probably use 10-15%.

I'm guessing it isn't using LTE. If I only connect by wifi and turn off data syncing then I can get more than a day too (with moderate use).
LTE really drains the battery.

Correct it is gsm, not lte.

That's impressive! Stock rom allows you to get at least 20 hours of WiFi/3G with 3-4 hrs of screen. Auto brightness. Here in Europe we don't have LTE, so our batteries could last a little bit more.

avarage battery use is over 13 hours (cm9+franco kernel).

10 hours and 53 min it dropped to 94% worth mentioning I didn't even touch the phone, can't seem to post a screen shot of it

Some of the best I've seen so far from my phone (about two weeks old) is posted here. Almost 36 hours of uptime! Wifi on the whole time, had a signal for most of it too, but guarantee there were some times that I didn't (because I was trying to use the phone then). This includes time spent playing some games as well. I've fired up Osmos HD, Everlands, Swords and Soldiers, and Draw Something at some point during that charge for at least a few iterations of play on each game. Decent amount of browsing, including hits from Google Shopper for some price comparisons. I'm syncing one Google account and one Exchange account, with black wallpaper, auto brightness (not tuned) and the calendar, news and weather, settings, and prepaid usage widgets. Stock ICS and unrooted.

Sprint Note 2 battery is a beast!

I put around 6-7 hours of screen time yesterday and still had battery left. Also it looks like the radios they are using are very efficient with very little battery drain.
Nothing scientific to report, but this morning I've used 3 hours of screen time and still have 66% battery left.
Love it!

I am happy to report similar findings. 4 hours screen time and im at 30% battery with 20 hours without a charge.

I don't know why but the radio's are definitely doing better than my S3. I'm picking up Lte more often and its not jumping back and fourth either. So far showing the same as far as battery, maybe even better.

The Note is known for great battery life. I've seen some people even get 10hours.. I get 5 hours screen time on mines and 14-17 hours of usage

Unbelivable battery on any phone ive come across. No wifi at all and use nothing but 3g and lil 4g to stream movies/drama at my rate im looking to get 5+ screen on time. Thats to me is unbelivable. So far 2:40 hr screen on and still have 58% left. Total time is at a lil over 7. Betterbatterystats say 6% per hour.

3 hours of heavy usage only down 10% with screen brightness halfway up. I feel like its too good to be true... someone is finally getting something right!

Got my Note 2 yesterday and used it most of the day then charged it overnight. Used it off and on today and still sitting on 77%. So much better than my OG EVO was. Im really loving this device!

Don't get me wrong OG Evo was great at the time but battery on that thing is horrendous. I have to carry a case with 4 extra batteries, lol.

Yeah I bought mine on day 1 and was trying to wait till the next nexus device came out but I sat on my evo and cracked the glass. Anyway very happy with my purchase and I've been riding this phone hard and still at 58%. I know its a 3100 ma battery which is double the evo but I never expected it to do this well on the battery. Very pleased thus far.

Almost no wifi at all accept maybe 5 mins when I came home from work. This was all watching online flash movies, games and surfing.

This battery is definitely beast.

i got 4 and a half hours of screen on time yesterday and that was with moderate use...hope my screen time gets better..before i got the phone i read articles about the reviewer getting 12 hours of screen time with moderate use

I believe that. My 6hrs of screen time was me trying to put it through the ringer.
I can't wait for roms with battery tweaks. We might see 2days of screen time.

So far I'm at 1 day 6 hours, (2 hours screen on) and I'm down to 56%. I'm really impressed, and this offsets the sourness I feel with the crippled SIM/wireless charging. Heck, who needs to even charge this thing with battery life like that!?
What really impresses me is the fact that I've been out several times today - yet the battery graph is perfectly steady. Whereas every other phone I've had immediately starts plummeting when I'm on the go and it has to switch towers, etc. I can always take one look at a graph or SystemPanel and know exactly when I was out, but not with this phone. :good:
Samsung really must have done something good with the radio in this thing.

On wifi quite a bit of the time, but still very happy with the battery. Includes gmail email sync, default mail client syncing an imap account every 15 minutes, about 2 hours of podcasts and music, 20 minutes of voice calls, and other misc stuff. No video.

I picked up my Note 2 on Friday, and charged it that night. Saturday morning at 10:00am I disconnected it. I have turned off wifi and SCO so it was running on 3g all day, I decided to not charge it Saturday night to test the battery to see how long I could go without charging. I went a full 48 hours on one charge and still had 11% at 10:00am on Monday. I didn't have heavy use on it, but spent a couple hours browsing the internet and Facebook, as well as 2 hours of Draw Something off an on. Very impressed. I didn't think to take any screenshots, sorry.
