I have a Samsung 5V 2A mains wall charger with USB/MicroUSB cable.
I'm using it to charge my XPERIA M (C1905) ... tentatively
Would there be a problem pushing 2A(spec'd on charger) into the XPERIA M?
I have no idea what the maximum acceptable Amperage under charge for an XPERIA M is.
If I use CurrentWidget as a basic indicator it notes up to 1.3A while charging the battery using the 2A charger.
As a test, I used a 850mAh Sony charger and CurrentWidget noted 700mAh when charging the battery.
So I'm guessing CurrentWidget on an XPERIA M gives ball park figures.
I'm hoping the XPERIA M has a maximum 'safe' Amp limit and wondering if I'm pushing my luck using a 2A charger.
Any thoughts on this?

As far as I know, there aren't any side effects... More amp means that the battery will be charged fast, so, as long as your phone doesn't get hot, I think it's safe...

I've done a bit of reading and the general conclusion is as you have said and if it's getting hot, there may be problems.
Over-volting or excessive voltage is the big no no and Amps is just what the phone accepts.
The XPERIA M indicates a max Amp draw of approx 1.1A
When not really required I'll probably just stick to a 450mAh USB charging port on a Panasonic KX-TG7873S land phone which is normally used for a slow charge.
It does appear at this time that slower charging does prolong battery life overall, but using a 5V 2A charger every now and then will not really impact anything.

Hi All,
Was wondering if anyone knows the maximum current the SGS2 can draw for charging purposes. I had a look at the wall charger provided with it, and it's 0.7a; it takes forever (my opinion) to charge compared to my last phone. Just wondering if it is worth my while investing in a more powerful charger.

Also, at the start of the SGS2 charging cycle, my wall-plug power meter reads 5.1 W.
5.1 is what the adapter is pulling. All of that isn't getting to the phone. Funny thing for my is the phone charges faster off my blackberry 0.75a charger then it does off my Galaxy I 1a charger.

Someone in another thread mentioned seeing something in the source code about the phone drawing at most 650 mA (instead of a more typical 1000 mA) during charging. If that's the case, a more powerful charger by itself won't help; you'd also need a custom ROM that doesn't limit the charge current.
Does anyone know why Samsung would limit the charge current?

Speculation is that its a heat related problem. Don't want to pull a Sony and have the batteries explode on people... (but again, that's speculation)

I also heard that a smaller charging current extends the Li-ion battery's lifetime, even though I'd prefer quicker charging as the battery can be replaced with ease.
I second that. I tried it today with a 1A car charger (USB cig. plug) can't say it made a difference on speed of charge compared to wall one.
Just received my SGSII and the charging is extremely slow. 3+ hours = about 500 mAh, on a 1A wall charger. Never had such a slow charging smartphone before
To change i9100 charging current you have to short r529 or r531
Current limit will change to 1000mA
You can use 2A charger and phone will charge only with 650mA current
But after this short one of those resistors current limit will change to 1A
I use it on my phone and all is fine. Current after change is measured.

I have the suspicion, that my noname charger is not recognized properly and it only charges with USB current (450mA).

1000mA is more likely the maximum current that the phone is expected to drain from the battery.
It is not the battery charging current, which is presumably equal to the mentioned 650mA, since the 1650mAh battery charges in about 4 hours.
If the charging current was actually 1000mA, then the 1650mA battery it would charge in 2 hours or so, but as we all know, it is not so, even with a 2A charger.

The charging time depends on the Charger and Rom i use, i havent figured out for what reason.
Sometimes the SGS2 is charged in approx. 1 hour and with other Roms the charging time may take up to 3h.

Definately 650ma, IF the phone detects an High current USB port, otherwise it falls back to lousy 400ma.
You can trick into 650ma always: take a usb cable, cut from the PC plug side the TX/RX cables, on the other side short them on PHONE plug side these two cables.
Phone will now always go into "AC charging mode". Don't worry (too much) for your USB ports, they can all well 1000ma, and the one that cannot will report "high current detected, port disable".

The original SE charger for the arc is the GreenHeart charger EP800. It has got an output of 5V; 850mA.
As far as I know, there's no SE charger with an output of 1A. I've seen chargers with 500mA, 700mA and the 850mA.
My charger got fried during a power surge while holidaying in India so after asking around on the forum, I bought a Nokia AC-10N charger with an output of 5V, 1200mA. I've been using it without any problems. Pretty happy with it. Charges the phone much faster.

Totally true on all counts. You can really use ANY usb charger to charge your Arc, but the higher the mA the faster it will charge. And the higher the mA, the less overall life your battery will have. If it's normally supposed to be good for 5000 recharges, it might drop to 4000 recharges (just numbers pulled out of thin air).
The "Normal" standard for USB power is 0.5A (or 500mA). The iPad for example uses 1.0A, or twice as much as standard. Now in the iPad's case, it refuses to charge with anything less. I don't know if that's true for the Arc or not...if so, and the SE charger is rated at 850mA, then that's probably as low as you'd want to go just to be on the safe side.
Personally, I'm willing to use the iPad's charger and charge a bit faster for a bit lower useful battery lifetime. A new battery I can buy....time spent waiting for my phone to be charged I can't get back
The amperage rating on a charger defines the maximum current the charger is capable of supplying. A 1A charger doesnt force 1A down the throat of whatever's connected to it, if you connect something can only manage to pull a maximum of 500mA then it will only get 500mA.
Consumer power supplies are generally constant voltage. E.g. a 5V charger will supply 5V to anything connected to it. The amount of current that the device will draw at 5V is the amount it was designed to draw, up to the limit that the charger can supply. If the charger cant supply enough, generally you just get slower charging (though some poorly designed devices will just refuse to charge at all). What *will* tend to destroy your device quickly is a voltage mismatch, e.g. connecting a 5V phone to a 12V charger.
You can get constant current power supplies. These ramp up the voltage in order to force the required current out regardless of what's attached to it (even if that's a human being). They are scary.

charging a battery is always very "difficult" for the battery. if you charge not so fast, the battery wont get hot anymore and it's better for battery life. but it takes 2h 30 minutes and with a/c you need 1h
nope..not at all..usb charging gives very less amount of energy compared to AC charging..thats why it takes more time to charge and it is completely safe

True. I prefer charging my phone by USB. This way my phone never gets hot. If your don't have time then use AC charging.

I've got no idea if its safe for the battery, I prefer AC, I never charge my arc over the computer. What about the difference between USB and AC is that AC gives you 850mA an the computer USB(2.0) only 500mA!
Car chargers are safe as long as they are decently made (Fully Regulated). A good regulated Car charger is just as safe as any other charger.
Lithium Batteries are pretty hardy as far as charging goes. (just dont over charge or fully discharge)
as far as USB is concerned, some USB2 ports will supply up to 900ma,
I charge my phone on my Tablet charger all the time (2000ma or 2Amp) simply because it is FAST. sure the phone gets warm but the phone/charger will regulate the charge as it needs to.
it is also good to note that the quality of the charger is very important.
cheep charger = more likely to damage battery as well as cause funny issues with the phone when plugged in.

Exactly. Your battery will prevent it from getting over charged. It's safe.
Personally, I use Nokia chargers as they deliver a higher output.
Nokia AC-10N gives an output of 1,200mA. [Home - AC wall charger with a long cable]
Nokia DC-20 gives an output of 1,000mA. [Car charger with dual USB ports; both ports output 1A each].
Been using both for a long time now without any issues. Didn't go for the SE chargers because of the lower output, which takes longer to charge the phone.
And to the OP, USB charging is safe.

I noticed that when I charge my Note 8.0 with the USB wall adapter that comes with it, charging only takes about 2-3 hours but when I use the power cable of my Samsung Galaxy S Advance, charging can take up to 4-6 hours.
Assuming that I don't mind the longer waiting time, will using the latter power cable to charge my device shorten its battery lifespan or damage it in anyway? Thanks!

I'm guessing that the difference in charging time is due to the difference in current. High current contributes to greater heating, which damages the battery but I'm wondering if higher temperature over a shorter duration or lower temperature over a longer duration is more damanging. Is the difference even significant?
I've read this link How USB charging works, or how to avoid blowing up your smartphone from "is it safe to use any usb cable to charge s3?" and got the idea that my device isn't going to blow up or anything like that. I just want to know if it damages the device because I've spent a good fortune on it and I want it to last for as long as possible (hopefully a minimum of 5 years). Yes, any other advice on how to prolong device lifespan is also welcome. Thanks a lot guys!
The reason its taking longer is its not providing the same amt of juice the note charger is. I looked at the output of the samsung note 8 charger and its 2amps. Looking at an oem charger for your phone its 1000mah which is 1amp so half the charging amt thus the longer charging time. Now you need to take a look at the charger and read the output amperage on it and if its less then 2 amps you are fine. If its over 2 amps then I would discontinue using it as it could cause harm.
As long as the amperage of the other charger is less then the samsung note 8 charger you won't have any issues other then longer charging time. Once you go above the 2amp rating I would be concerned as you are putting more amps into the battery then what it could be rated for in the charging cycle.

Actually, the amps used to charge with is up to the device not the charger. If your device comes with a charger that has an output rating of [email protected] and you plug it into a charger rated at [email protected] it won't necessarily charge it any faster unless the device pulls more than it should. Just means the charger has a higher output rating and can handle more power hungry devices. It should not hurt the device. However, if you up the voltage than there will be problems so you need to make sure the charger does not exceed the voltage. Plugging the device into a charger with lower ratings will of course charge slower because the device cannot draw as much.

Thanks I checked the charger and it says 0.7amps.
i am thinking about if my E975 is limited when it comes to how many amps it can charge with bcs i recently brought a 2A charger also tried it out on my Google Nexus 7 2013 and i don't feel like it charges that much faster then my original LG charger with a 3meter flat OEM kable.
the charger i brought is said to charge with 2A while the original LG is only 1.2A shouldn't i be feeling a difference?

No, you shouldn't. You can plug it into a 10 Amp charger, but the phone will only draw the amount it needs. Remember, it's not the charger pushing the current to the phone, it's the phone pulling it from the charger. The charging current is determined by the phone - each Li-Ion or Li-Po battery has a controller curcuit. The important thing is for a charger to be able to provide what a device wants to draw - otherwise, it would charge slowly, or not at all. So, a charger should be rated for not less than X Amp. More amp rating won't hurt, but it won't increase the actual current...
oh this is very useful. I also had the same question.
mine came with a 750mA (.75A) charger. As I left my charger at home during the holidays, I had to make due with one that I bought from a nearby tech store. I was very happy with the charger that I bought as it charges my phone really fast. I found out that my new charger was also a 2A model.
so I guess, in my experience, I noticed a big improvement in charging speeds comparing the 750mA with the new 2A charger. But I guess coming from a 1.2A charger, it only makes little difference.
