[Q] Non-rooted Kindle HD 8.9 not found in device manager - 8.9" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I have a stock Kindle HD 8.9 from best buy that seems to have seized up. It's not rooted, I was hoping I might be able to root it to bring it back to life.
When I turn on the kindle it stops at the kindle fire logo and looks like the logo is being lit up by a light streak that scrolls across the logo. This repeats until the battery dies.
When I plug the kindle the computer via USB, the computer makes a single noise that sounds like it is trying to find the device and then Windows attempts to find drivers. Windows then errors out and says the device driver cannot be found.
If I look in the device manager I do not see any Kindle devices. If I show hidden devices I can see JEM-PVT-Prod-04 in a faint gray color with a grey question mark next to it. Through downloading and installing USB drivers found on this site I was able at one time to get this to change to Android USB device. It never changed from the faint gray color. I uninstalled the drivers and restarted since updating the drivers did not seem to address the issue. I have seen mentions in many threads about yellow triangles but I have never seen that.
I believe read on the FAQ that if there is some indication of power or booting, then the device might be able to be recovered. I'm just not seeming to have any luck with getting it to respond to the PC.
The computer is Windows 7 64bit.
I read on amazon's developer site that ADB must be enabled on the kindle before rooting. Since the kindle will not boot, I can not confirm whether it is enabled or not. I presume this is a crucial step, but I felt I should double check with others who are more knowledgeable.
Thank you for any help that may be provided.

Ah good you are able to install the drivers, that's good, leave those installed, in your case you are not wanting adb access you are wanting fastboot access to fix it, that adb interface that briefly appears is actually fastboot, so with the drivers installed you will need a copy of a utility that comes with fastboot, i recommend kindle fire first aid, open a command prompt and cd to the directory where the fastboot program is, and with is and with the device off and unpluggedt run
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product
once the command prompt says "waiting for device", plug the kindle in, it should now go into fastboot mode and say fastboot on the screen. Now use kindle fire first aid to restore the kindle.

Stunts, thank you for the help. I had thought in my reading that the fastboot command above was only used after the android device was visible in the device driver. It appears that the fastboot command "forces" the device to become visible, if I understand correctly. The device was listed in the device manger in full color rather than the faint gray that it was before.
I found the Kindle Fire First Aid and ran that, there was a helpful link in the FAQ. When I ran the First Aid, I choose the Kindle 8.9 and the first version as I do not know what version number was on the device to begin with. The First Aid ran through its procedures and the Kindle rebooted. I seem to have a working device now.
I can't remember where, but I thought I saw something In one thread about a patch that should be applied after rebuilding the Kindle but before connecting to the Internet with it.
Under About, it says I am on system version 8.1.2_user_1211420
Am I ok to continue with the device or should I be doing some cleanup/final fixing before using it normally?

[Q] Kindle Fire Brick (possibly FUBAR) Please help!!!

First of all, I search many threads but couldn't find help for my specific problem. I rooted my Kindle Fire 6.2.2. with TWRP. Upon trying to unroot it, it bricked. I downloaded Kindle Fire Utility v0.9.3. to fix this but my computer won't properly recognize my Kindle. It doesn't seem like a driver problem. All I can do when I plug in my Kindle is eject it. And when I try to install FireFireFire, I get this error "Oops...something went wrong. We are unable to locate your Kindle Fire. Make sure it is plugged in and powered on."
Please help! Thanks.

so you get an understanding of how these different pieces fit together.
I can't get a sense of where your problems begin. 1) TWRP is not used to root. 2) you never mention what your Kindle Fire is doing that you think it's bricked. 3) how did you manage to root it in the first place if your drivers weren't working?

Answers: 1. Rooted with BurritoRoot3 and also installed TWRP. 2. It is stucked on the Kindle Fire screen. 3. My drivers were working then and seem to be now. If you installed TWRP, then you also installed FFF. If by "Kindle Fire screen" you mean the yellow triangle logo and that's all you see when it starts up without it ever blinking black, then you are in fastboot mode. Use KFU to set it back to normal and reboot it. If that doesn't work, you need to check the device manager in Windows and make sure it shows "Android Phone -> Android ADB Interface" for your Kindle Fire. If the device manager does not show that, then you need to uninstall the drivers, remove the device from the device manager, disconnect the KF from your computer and follow these directions....

First of all. thank you for the help. And now my Kindle is stuck on the Kindle Fire screen.
Mine is stuck here too..been 3 days.. ordered the factory cable.. hopefully that works.
One thing I've noticed is that sometimes when the you try to issue fastboot commands in fastboot mode it doesn't register. But that doesn't mean you aren't in fastboot mode.
Get your command prompt ready (“ready" means that "fastboot" is in your present working directory)
Turn off your Kindle
Type "fastboot devices" (without quotes)
Turn your Kindle on
Hit enter to send fastboot command
Keep hitting UP arrow to bring up last command and keep hitting enter until your computer recognizes the Kindle. If it doesn't, start over and try again. When it does, then you can change your bootmode.
It WILL work, eventually. If it doesn't, the only other logical explanation is it's a driver issue.
Typically speaking (but not always), the only reason you should ever have to use a factory cable is if you killed your battery and you don't have enough juice to power the device. There are other reasons but they are extremely RARE.
And please forgive my frustration, but this is one of the simplest concepts to master. "Unbricking" your device shouldn't be this difficult...for anyone.

I notice in a post someone is seeing:
"Bricked mine too. It shows up as a USB COM port and spits out "READYREADYREADYREADY" until it disconnects itself. I think this means it should be possible to restore 5.3.2.1 via sp flash tool (or maybe another serial loader). If we can get the right files"
Is that the "Ready" you are saying means wait until fastboot?

okay so i was trying to root my kindle fire and i didnt get su any where so then i tryed to install cwm and now its stuck at the yellow triangle and it wont go into recovery and it also will not connect to adb i need hellp ASAP
Install drivers as ADB composite with the Android SDK and then use this to change the bootmode
The link you posted is not working due to the period in the URL at the end.
Do not afraid. I have got the same experience Let God bless the search button

unzip fbmode.zip
adb push fbmode /data/local/fbmode
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/fbmode
adb shell /data/local/fbmode
adb reboot
Your kindle will "get stuck" on the kindle fire screen, but really it's just in fastboot mode.
fastboot -i 0x1949 boot twrp-blaze-2.0.0RC0.img
Your device will now boot into twrp recovery, and flash the firefirefire bootlaoder. When done it will prompt you to reboot. Upon reboot you will get stuck on the "yellow triangle" screen of firefire fire.
fastboot oem idme bootmode 5002
fastboot reboot

My kindle got the 6.3 update -solved!!
This has got to be one of the fastest ways I have rooted 6.3 kindle update
i went on line here http://liliputing.com/2012/03/root-...ogle-play-store-with-kindle-fire-utility.html
downloaded the new kindle fire utility and ckick on Install permanent root with super user. got rooted in about 2 minutes with no trouble at all
thanks everyone for your help but i solved it what i was doing was unsing the kindle fire utility trying to instal latest firefirefire but it just sat there and so i just went into the utility and reinstaled the twrp and it booted normal!!
Bricked Kindle
Okay, I'm not having the same issue, but I'm pretty sure I've completely, irevicalbly, bricked my kindle.
I know that I'm not in Fastboot mode, I've experienced that issue and solved it with the KFU.
Here's what I did:
I used the KFU to root my kindle. That worked fine. I was able to load all the Google apps (which was my initial goal). Then, I got greedy and decided that ICS was my next step - oops.
I followed the instructions on the following site:
androidauthority.com/kindle-fire-miui-4-ics-55853/
Note: I know, I'm an idiot - I should have paid attention to comments! UGH!
After I did this, I now only get the firefirefire logo and that is it. I can't load/reload TWRP and I can't change my bootmode to normal or recovery. The thing is, no matter which computer I plug the device into, the computer won't recognize the device. I get a message saying something "malfunctioned" when I plug it in. I've tried 3 different Windows machines (I've installed/reinstalled drivers I don't know how many times!) and I even tried loading Linux on a spare laptop and that didn't work either.
So, I tried the next thing I could think of. I followed the instructions on the following site:
ramble.karrth.com - Section "Troubleshooting TWRP
which involved removing the back cover, shorting a circuit (to force usbboot) and plugging my Kindle in. This didn't work for me either.
At this point, I'm willing to try anything. I'm not quite sure how to fix this issue. I think my next step is to either order a factory cable or make my own and try that, but if my bootloader is broke (truely broke) will that even work?
Please, if I should post this in another forum/place, just let me know. Any help appreciated!
I should also not that nothing comes up in my device manager. It does come up as a unrecognized USB bit goes away after telling me there was a malfunction.

If you get the yellow triangle logo to come up, then it's probably in fastboot mode. If you reboot it while it's connected to your computer and you get some device detection beeps from Windows, it's likely to be a driver issue. Look here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23747671&postcount=2
You might want to read the first post in that thread too.
Watch carefully as the device boots up and you get the yellow triangle logo. If that boot logo comes up and stays there, it's in fastboot. If the boot logo comes up, the screens blacks out, and then the boot logo comes back up (dimmer) then it's either trying to get into recovery or booting into the OS and failing.
I would try setting the bootmode to normal in KFU and when it says "<waiting for device>" reboot the Kindle Fire. Since you have FFF, the fastboot program on your computer will wait for the Kindle Fire's FFF bootloader to get into temporary fastboot and reset the bootmode when the KF is ready.
But, the computer won't even recognize there is a device connected to it
I will have to try installing the drivers from the Android SDK... maybe that will turn up something. But, by installing the drivers from KFU, it doesn't work.
When I plug the device in, it beeps at me saying device is unrecognize and it couldn't install drivers because there was a malfunction. In the device manager (while that's happening) it shows up as an unrecognized usb device. Then, it goes away (the device doesn't stay in the device manager). Then, that whole thing happens again one more time. There isn't anything for me to update in the device manager... thoughts?
And because its not recognized in the device manger, kfu isn't picking it up

If you can't get the drivers working with the KFU distribution, you'll have a harder time with the SDK. They are the same drivers, but KFU has an updated, Kindle Fire specific .inf file for the driver and also installs the .ini file in the .android folder that you'll need. I don't know what you see in the device manager, but if you don't get one of the devices shown in the post I referred to earlier, I would try another Windows machine. You won't be able to do anything without getting it to detect your KF and load the proper drivers. If you are more adventurous, you could try pokey9000's Firekit (search for it) and try using linux to send it fastboot commands.
Yeah, that's my problem. I have tried 3 different windows machines (all windows 7) and, being the adventurous person i am I tried the Linux fix (removing back cover...) to no avail. All that did was make my kindle blink green. Not sure what that means either.
yea mine is stuck on the firefirefire boot screen

Well, if you can't get any of those scenarios to work out, maybe it's a hardware issue. It might be something as simple as a bad USB cable or something more serious within the KF itself. I've never had a problem with Windows or Linux not seeing the KF, so my hands on experience in this regard is limited... my KF has never been broken to that degree. I'm always curious to see what's going on with people's KF when they say nothing works, but my KF has never given me that opportunity.

Sometimes in order to install the correct driver you need to delete the original from your computer because it will continue to attempt to revert to the default but beforehand try rebooting your computer and the kindle

[SOLVED] Stuck at the KF logo

I seriously need some help. My normally fierce Google-fu has failed me. I have searched countless threads on here (and elsewhere) and tried just as many solutions, but I haven't had any luck. My Kindle Fire is stuck at the "Kindle Fire" boot logo. I was using the KF utility, and ADB status was online, everything looked good. I chose the option to root and install TWRP. However, it couldn't grab TWRP through my corporate firewall/proxy, so it skipped it, placed my KF in fastboot (I think), rebooted, now I'm bricked.
Depending on which PC I use, and in what order it's plugged in, I get different results in the Device Manager (both Windows 7):
Home PC -
Hardware Ids = USB\UNKNOWN
Yes, I've tried loading drivers six ways from Sunday, and none worked.
Absolutely no solution involving ADB in any way will work until I can at least get Windows to recognize it correctly and load the proper drivers.
Work PC -
If I have the KF turned on when I plug it into my PC, I get the same result as on my home PC (though I don't think I tried plugging it in on my home PC while my KF was powered off).
If I have it turned off when I plug it in, my PC sees it as an "Android ADB Interface", with the correct hardware ids.
Even when it sees my KF correctly in Device Manager, I still can't get ADB to communicate with it.
I've tried FireKit on my Ubunutu 12.04 laptop, but it never sees my device, and gets stuck at the <waiting for device> message. I've tried countless driver iterations and many utilities, and none seem able to communicate with it while it's stuck at the logo.
Any help would be immeasurably appreciated!!
[UPDATE]
While my device was detected correctly in Device Manager (but still not able to communicate via ADB), I reloaded the drivers using the KF Utility. It is still detected as "Android ADB Interface" but with an error in Device Manager. The error is "This device cannot start. (Code10)". I uninstalled it, including drivers, and let Windows autodetect. It was identified as "kindle", so I ran the same driver package and it still sees it as "Android ADB Interface", but still with the error.
[UPDATE 2] - Steps I took to (finally) get mine working
Note: If your device is recognized in Device Manager as something *other* than "Unknown Device* (such as "kindle" or "Android ADB Interface"), skip to step 3.
1. Turn off the device.
2. Plug the device into USB to your computer. This should turn the device on.
3. Delete the ".android" folder from your Windows profile. This is very important. If you just uninstall the device and driver, Windows will still use this to reinstall the device. You want to start as fresh as possible to eliminate complications from previous attempts.
4. Uninstall it from Device Manager. Make certain to check the box to uninstall the driver as well.
5. Start a new scan for hardware changes in the Device Manager.
6. As mine was stuck in fastboot mode, it recognized the device as "kindle" (lower-case "k")
7. Run the "install_driver.bat" from the Kindle Fire Utility.
8. After driver install, run the Kindle Fire Utility.
9. ADB status will say "offline", that's fine.
10. Choose option 1 to go into the Bootmode Menu.
11. Choose option 1 to boot into Normal Mode.
12. It will be stuck at <waiting for device>.
13. Turn off the device, keeping it plugged into the PC. *very important* This step was one among others that made THE difference for me.
14. Turn on the device. *Hopefully*, you should immediately see the utility spit out some text and your device should reboot.
15. Boots up!! (well, mine did, and I had almost give up hope were it not for my pride and stubbornness).
Read this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552547
with emphasis on device drivers.
"Android ADB Device" typically means the device is in fastboot mode and you cannot use adb while in fastboot mode.... you must use fastboot.
With your KF off and disconnected from your work computer, run this command...
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product
and then connect it to the computer. The KF will turn on automatically. The computer will say "<waiting for device>" for a bit, but if the command works, it will eventually return "product: kindle" as output. If that works, you can actually flash TWRP from there, but if you are anxious for it to do something again...
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 oem idme bootmode 4000
fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot
should get it booting normally again. If it doesn't, look at the link I gave you and focus on getting your drivers fixed. You won't be able to execute any commands (fastboot or adb) through Windows if the device drivers don't work. You might want to go back to Firekit if drivers remain problematic for you.
Everything you need to know to fix your KF is in that link at the beginning of my post, including the commands you need to run. At the bottom of post #3 is also another link to a how-to root/install ROMs page.
IT LIVES!!! While I was still getting the error code 10, I launched the KF utility one more time. ADB status was still offline. I went into the menu to modify boot mode, told it to boot in normal mode and it was stuck <waiting for device>. On a whim, I left it there and cycled power on my KF. It found the device, finished, rebooted, and it's good!!! The Device Manager is happy now too!!
The behavior was so odd between my work and home PC. I was seriously scared when it gave a bad device ids on my home PC. I think it was more a combination of several different things that helped, and I'll update my main post with all that I did to get it back (that I can remember). Hopefully it will help someone else.
This is an *amazing* community, and I can't thank everyone enough for the incredible work you all do and the true sense of selflessness exhibited here on the forums!
btw, How do I edit the subject to indicate it's solved?

Glad it could help someone! I was frustrated enough about it and couldn't find a single solution that fit my issue. I just had to combine some to get it to work for me.

Yes this saved two bricked kindles. Trial and error is sometimes the best means to solving a problem.

These steps still didn't work for me :-/ I'm still stuck with the KF logo and a "Waiting for device" prompt. I've read through these forums starting with the "KKFB" to this one and still haven't had any luck yet. It may be time to give up on her. I think I have royally messed her up.
If anyone else has any other suggestions I'm open i've tried everything else on here I can find.
Thanks

Agreed, you really need to be more specific. "Waiting for device" .... which part of the KF utility?. What *exactly* are you seeing, where? What does Device Manager show your KF identified as (keep in mind, there is a big difference between seeing it as "Kindle" and "kindle"). What *exactly* did you do that brought you to this point?
Symptoms. Symptoms. Symptoms. The more detail you provide, the more likelihood we can help.
Take heart. If there's anything I learned in my stubborn refusal to admit my KF was fully bricked, is that it can be brought back from a lot worse than we give it credit for. I also learned quite a bit that I never would have if I never failed. That's what I love about breaking things!

Okay, I was attempting to load a ROM on it. It had been rooted already with no issues and then something happened during the installation of TWRP and spit out an error message of unable to load and then rebooted. That's where I am with the kindle fire boot screen.
As for the "Device Manager" It shows up as "Android Composite ADB Device" and with KFU it shows the following status:
ADB Status: Online
Boot Status: Unknown
At this point is when if I try to run Install Latest TWRP Recovery or FFFF or anything it just sits there and says "Waiting For Device"...
I've read though most of these posts and have tried several different suggestions with no luck so far. So I have actually read through here. :-/
Hope this helps at all.
I would try by trying to change the bootmode using the KF utility. If you're stuck at the KF logo on boot, then the other functions of the utility won't do anything. Your KF needs to be in a "usable" state before that can happen. Have you tried changing it to "Fastboot" or "Normal"?

Yeah, I've tried it using the KF Utility as well as using fastboot at the command line :-/

with emphasis on device drivers.

I presume if any of this helped, you were able to get further than you have been. What state is it in now? What error(s) if any?
I seem to be having this same issue but I cannot get my pc to recoginze the kindle fire as anything. perhaps i did something wrong but i was following a video on youtube and though i was doing it exactly as it showed. First thing i did after I finally got the drivers loaded was start KFU and then chose to load TWRP. It started the process but when it hit the part about rebooting my device that's where it stopped. Since then i've been stuck at the white and yellow kindle fire logo. No matter what i do to try to reinstall the ADB drivers I cannot get my computer (win xp) to recognize the kindle. It shows as "unknown device" in device manager and when it's plugged in the little pop up says that the usb device has malfunctioned and windows doesn't recognize it. So am I totally dead? I'm assuming before i can do anything to recover it I need to get windows to recognize it with the ADB drivers.

[Q] Kindle Fire 8.9 Perma-Bricked?

Hey Guys,
I successfully rooted my kindle fire 8.9" a while back and a few days ago decided to follow: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277105 to install the twrp/custom rom.
In fireflash I moved the bootloader back to 8.1.4 and changed the boot and recovery partitions accordingly. I disabled the recovery auto update. I applied the changes and rebooted (I saw the red kindle fire letters and then it changed to the blue letters). It went into the TWRP screen at which point the guide told me to reboot. I found a "reboot to recovery" option and clicked it. Apparently, this was a very bad thing to do. The kindle boots to the Kindle Fire logo in red letters and stays there. it doesn't go blue and nothing moves. It stays that way until I turn it off.
It no longer will show up in Device Manager at all, but if I turn it on while plugged into the computer, the computer makes fast bump sounds like it sees the device for a second. The first time I plugged it into a different computer windows said it was trying to install a driver for "Jem-PVT-Prod-04" but then the driver installation failed and it doesn't show up in the device manager even with an exclamation mark.
Using different adb tools (Minimal adb and fastboot, kindle adb drivers, and android sdk) yields no response from the device even with a factory cable (which I purchased and arrived this morning). Fastboot just says < waiting for device > after the command "fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product"
Adb kill-server followed by adb devices leads to a blank list of devices. (I also went into user/.android/ to change the adb_usb.ini file to 0x1949 (which it already was)
I tried KFHD SRT v2.1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011126 but it can't see the device either.
At this point, I don't know what can be done and am open to trying everything.

Just to confirm that you're doing it correctly...have you powered the device completely down, entered 'fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product', and then turned the device on? And still no luck?
BTW, the factory cable will not work with the KFHD8.9 and can possibly damage it. Don't use it.

Correct, I tried fastboot with the kindle 8.9 off, on,off then on, and on then off. None of these does anything except sit and say < waiting for device >.
Thanks for the heads up on the factory cable. It didn't seem to do anything any different anyway but is unplugged now.

I've run into relatively the same problem with my HD8.9 several times while testing scripts but I've always been able to enable fastboot after rebooting using 'getvar product'. The difference in my case, is that I was always using Linux. You may want to set up a LiveUSB and install the SoupKit from the Dev section and try again to see if it makes a difference. SoupKit is not required, of course, but it is definitely recommended if you're not very familiar with Linux.

Are you running windows??? If you are.... when your kindle is powered down and you type in the fast boot commands, go into device ,manager and see if your kindle shows a yellow triangle next to it. Reply asap.

Brandonrz,
It does not show up in the Device manager when off, when I send fastboot commands, or when on. It will however show up as Jem-PVT-Prod-04 for ~1 second if I have device manager open and I turn on the kindle (regardless of whether or not a fastboot command was sent).
@soupmagnet,
my flashdrive was dead so I just picked up a new one. Putting linux on it now.

For those who may be in same situation here is what I did.
Go to device manager. For that second, try to Right click on Jem-PVT-08 and choose update driver software, then browse my computer for driver software, then let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer. I moved down list and picked Kindle and it installed as adb composite interface or something like that. Once installed the device manager showed "Kindle" and my fastboot was working. I've had the issue before. I hope this helped!
Glorious Success!
So I ended up doing a combination of the two solutions and since I know how frustrating this was here's how I did it just in case someone stumbles upon this.
How it magically worked:
1.) Inside of Linux Mint, I installed Soupkit
2.) In terminal i typed "fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product"
-----The kindle reacted for the first time in a long time and went into fasboot mode. Since I had no idea where to put the boot.img or recovery.img in linux to send them but the fastboot or adb commands, I decided to risk it and move to windows.
3.) I unplugged the kindle
4.) Booted into Win 7 x64
5.) The fastboot wasn't working in windows but I checked device manager and the exclamation mark was lingering. I manually picked the driver of amazon.com/kindle and it installed the adb composite device. Fastboot now works in windows.
5.) ran SR Tool.bat in the KFHD_SRT_2.1 folder and chose option 1 (Enable Fastboot)
-----Success
6.)in SR Tool i chose option 4 (erase cache and userdata)
----Took ~4 minutes but success
7.) in cmd I navigated to my sdk platform tools folder by typing "cd C:\Users\<username>\Desktop\SDK\adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20130522\sdk\platform-tools"
8.) I downloaded the boot.img and recovery.img linked here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011126) and placed them into C:\Users\<username>\Desktop\SDK\adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20130522\sdk\platform-tools\
9.) in the cmd from step 7 I sent the following commands "fastboot -i 0x1949 flash boot boot.img" and "fastboot -i 0x1949 flash recovery recovery.img"
----Great Success
10.) In SR Tool I chose option 6 (reboot normally)
-----It looped for ~2 minutes but eventually booted like normal but the SR_Tool asked me to make sure that adb was enabled before clicking enter. I enabled it on the device but SR Tool still didn't seem to see that I had done it. Since it rebooted normally, I didn't really care.
11.) The kindle upgraded itself after I set it down to type this response to 8.4.3
I probably could have easily done this is linux, but I didn't know where to put the boot.img and recovery.img. Also, I'm guessing that the system.img is put back on the device when I used the KFHD SRT but I'm not sure.
Now I'm going for round two to get CM 10.1 put on this thing!
Thanks for all of the help. I really thought that I had actually managed to brick the nearly unbrickable kindle fire 8.9"
Congrats on your success and thanks for sharing the experience!
I think one problem with Windows is that, "fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product" does not work very well on putting the kindle to fastboot if the device driver is not properly installed, kindle will simply bypass the fastboot step and continue(and hang), the whole situation is a dead loop on Windows if the fastboot driver is having problem and the kindle can't boot into the ROM, and to make things even worse, there is no factory cable for HD8.9
So the SoupKit is a real life saver here.
I had the same sort of driver problem after I installed the second bootloader. For me the simple fix was to go into device manager (In Windows 7), uninstall whatever driver was there with the yellow triangle and then reinstall the official kindle adb driver. Congrats on getting it fixed though. It's a great feeling, I know.
Worked form me too!

Turned out it was a driver compatibility issue with Windows 10. It doesn't recognize the Kindle HD 8.9 properly. Moved it over to a Windows 7 machine and it was working, up until i attempted to flash a new recovery and boot .img . Now it's stuck on the red Kindle logo and computer won't pick up the USB. Halp!

Power off the Kindle, type fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product , plug in the Kindle when you get <waiting for device>, and flash the 2nd bootloader, recovery, and freedom-boot images as directed in Hashcode's thread. Skip to step 5 after downloading the files, as we're already in fastboot mode at this point.
Also, Windows 10 enforces driver signatures, so you'll need to disable that before proceeding with the Kindle driver installation.

Red Screen + no fastboot

Hello all
I realize the one post below me is almost the exact same problem, but I am stuck. I just got my kindle hd 89 and I already have a red screen. Every option I try to use to get fastboot does not work, whether I'm using cmd and typing in the command, using KFFA, or KFHD 2.1. I think I ended up with a red screen by using FireFlash but without checking the right options. If it matters, I started with 8.4.6. I really want to unred-screen this, so any help would be appreciated! Thanks.
hi beatmastermcfly,
I guess this will be a driver problem, for me win 7 64bit it works perfectly.
Have you ever tried KFHD_SRTv1.3-8.1.2 to start on another PC? Did you run it as an Admin?
You get a red screen when you try to SRT to enter fastboot?

I used KFHD_SRTv2.1- 8.1.4 and I am going to try KFHD_SRTv2.0- 8.1.3 , but the link to KFHD_SRTv1.3-8.1.2 in this thread appears to be dead. Anyone have a mirror?
And yes, the issue I'm having with KFFA, the SRT, and even when I am just trying to boot into fastboot via cmd, is that it says "waiting for device" and then when I plug it in it says "KindleFire" (in orange) for a second or two before switching over to the red screen.
I was able to do fastboot before the red screen showed up, so I doubt it has anything to do with drivers.
hi beatmastermcfly,
I asked because I recently in a German Help - Forum have 3 different PC's tried it with a user (always bare OS with identical increments). Only after 1 week it has then eventually folded.
the Pc's have not accepted the Fastboot.exe for any reason.

I do not understand what you are saying.
I will say that when I plug the Kindle in, my laptop makes the "device connected" noise followed quickly by the "device disconnected" noise and it even shows up in the device manager for the split second before it turns red.
What exactly is the device that shows up in the device manager call itself before it disappears? And does it have a yellow triangle on it?

At first it showed up under "portable devices" as an "unknown device" and I managed to uninstall the drivers in the hopes of re-installing them, and then the next time it showed up under "portable devices" as "jem-004..." etc. or whatever the code name for this type of kindle is. I think it just shows up as the category "other devices" now, but I do not have the kindle handy.
Depending on if it manages to stay connected long enough you might be able to install the drivers in my SIG, but I think windows cancels the driver install if it disconnects in mid install. If that's the case and running "fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product" and then plugging the kindle in doesn't go into fastboot you may need to boot a ubuntu live CD and do this from a terminal since the drivers work differently on Linux, they load up immediately without you having g to install anything.

Dead Kindle Fire HD 8.9
Okay, due to my own errors while using fastboot on my KF, it no longer does *anything* when I try to turn it on. I can't reenter fastboot, since ADB no longer recognizes the device (which of course, it can't, since the device doesn't start). I mean, it does *nothing* (although the hardware is in great shape).
Am I, as I suspect, just dead in the water here? I have the recovery files, but without ADB or fastboot, I no longer have a way to load them.
Should I just start using the KF as a doorstop now? Or is there some obscure solution to this mess?

Someone correct me but figuring concludes that the red screen is because amazon blocks tablet when it comes to a stolen board or losses , my I get a tablet I did not say much , so that the repaired but through the serial number of a personal contact amazon and they said it was lost and I imagine blocked the operating system so I could not use the tablet
Please Help!

On a win7 x64 box you need adb (there is a quick version) installed. The kfhd drivers. USC disabled. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY YOU MUST RUN ADB FROM A COMMAND PROMPT ORIGINATED FROM THE ADB FOLDER. (shift+right click and select "run command prompt from here)
Did you ever get your kfhd 8.9" to work. Everything youve said so far is the exact replica of my kindle. I know its like 7 years later but this is still a problem for people

this is a COPY/PASTE of my own post. the files i specify are the exact names, just search this section of X-DA for them. SEE BELOW.
i had the same problem with the "red screen of death" as well. i found that if i installed the "Minimal ADB and Fastboot" and / OR (i did the minimal first.... ) KFHD_SRTv1.3.5 and RUN THE APP FIRST, then when it says "waiting for device" you then plug in the ALREADY OFF tablet it then WORKS!! says "fastboot mode" on the tablet. and it is listed in device manager also.
i got BOTH apps here at this board in this section.
