[Q] are there OTA patches make phone unrootable?

I am switching from a nexus one on at&t. I love that damn phone, but hate the network now that i am in AZ. so i am gonna switch to verizon and get the incredible since it is getting cyanogenmod. I have read that on the EVO there have been OTA patches that block rooting from occuring. I wanted to make sure that there have not been any of those types of OTA updates for the incredible. I just want to be sure before i order one that i won't be stuck with a locked phone. thanks guys.

Bad timing considering OTA is around the corner for 2.2. You best bet is to shoot to a verizon store ask to see the phone and check the build before you purchase.

so as long as it still has 2.1 i should be good? that it pretty simple. correct?

correct. From what we are seeing now, there is a good chance that 2.2 will close all access blocking the ability to root.
That update has not come yet, but will soon.

well i had to order it because no one in the area has them in stock, no surprise. i really hope that it doesn't come with 2.2 preinstalled. with all the leaks i'm afraid it will. i'm a little unsure about whether it is possible to downgrade. i know on a nexus i could push either a nandroid or system.img downgrade. is that possible without root? i'm guessing no but wondering if i could get a definitive yes or no

[Q] 2.2 Unofficial OTA - Moving forward?

Hey folks,
I have a simple question, for those of us who installed the unoffcial 2.2 OTA manually (yes I know root is broken, yes I know I'm bad, etc.) what would be the best course of action moving forward?
If the "official" is coming out tomorrow and I can accept the update, do that? (considering any DEV's out there that are interested in finding the exploits to the official 2.2 won't work on the one released this past weekend, but the one tomorrow)
Do NOT accept the official OTA tomorrow and just leave the "unofficial" leak I have.
What do you folks think? And like I said, I understand that by accepting the risk of the unofficial OTA I broke root and there is a risk of never having root ever again (didn't have it in first place)

I'd wait. If there is a way to root the version you have, you can do that when it's published. I'm wondering if the whole pre-release thing was a ploy to get the dev community to find any holes in the update so they could plug them in the final release, especially with the new jailbreaking legalities.
If the real update is rootable, you just wait and update then. I would stay where you are if you don't really need to update to the final release.

I kinda doubt that they were looking for root exploits with the leak, simply not enough time. I would bet they were just seeing if this broke anything spectacularly or not, basically a release candidate more than anything more malicious.

Do you want to root eventually?
If so, staying where you are keeps your chances higher. You can always upgrade, can't go back though.
If you don't care i'd update. Watch to see if htc says anything about your process to update again.
Also, if everything works fine right now, you could wait and watch what devs do.

I should have specified but my intentions are to root in the future (if possible). And HTC did release a statement on their twitter saying that the unofficial users would free an official update to get "back on track". Whether or not that is what is coming out tomorrow is unknown...

Nobody has released a root method for the update yet, thus HTC won't really know what holes to close. if there is a method I'm sure they are keeping it hush hush so as NOT to alert HTC of any holes, plus if the Official update isn't rootable (slim chance the devs will figure something out) then they still have the Unofficial to work with, so stay with the unofficial and you definitly have more options, whether you need all those options is yours to decide!!

Then wait. Two chances are better than one.

New ATT OTA update?

My phone keeps bugging me about a new ATT update... but i don't want to do it yet as im not sure what it actually does. I googled and saw that it might remove my universal search, is that true? If that's the case is there any way to get it back after updating?

Not currently rooted running 4.1.2 should i wait to root?

Hey guys and girls just joined the site been looking around and reading alot of interesting things.
Like the title says im running 4.1.2 but i hear there might be a release of 4.2 coming the 20th?
I'm wanting to root my phone and join the club. I'm pretty much a newb when it come to this I want to make sure i do everything right when i start the process i'm a truck driver so my phone is a important part of my day to day activity and cant end up bricking my phone.
Ive been looking at youtube vids and reading comments some people having problems and some doing just fine.
Could someone recommend a link one with a video to show the process that would be great, should i wait for a over the air update to 4.2

Sprint won't be going to 4.2 . They are bypassing and the upcoming update will be 4.3. I would wate until the update comes out before you root. That way the roms and rooters will be able to be written and hou can have all the perks of an official 4.3

I disagree. I would root now. It's possible with any OTA update, it could secure the root exploit. And nothing has been really said when any update is coming. Could be a couple weeks or a couple months.
And if you're rooted already, you'll only need to wait a day or two before someone uploads a rooted version of the update to flash.
Plus, if you fubar something, it's likely already been done and you'll be able to find a fix.
And if you do depend on your phone, it's hard to say what things may get borked with the update. So by waiting those few days for the updated rom, you'll find out what is not working and can decide if updating is right for you. Sometimes updates will bork things like GPS.
Personally, I don't see anything you really gain by waiting.

Ditto on rooting before an update. Get root before the Knox **** hits your phone and your warranty is permanently b0rked. Once 4.3 and Knox is on your phone, if you ever root there's chance in hell of ever claiming on your warranty. More likely than not.

[Q] Update to 4.4 KitKat Yes or No?

I had an i747M Galaxy S3 that I bought as an i747.
Had to send ot back, as thanks to DocHoliday77, I realized my network connectivity issues on AT&T in the US were because it was a Canadian version phone. Confirmed by AT&T as well.
I sent it back, got refunded, and now have a US version AT&T i747 running JB 4.1.1.
I keep getting prompted to update the software. (Firmware) According to AT&T TS, it would be an update to 4.4 KitKat.
My only option to avoid the update seems to be to root the phone. I really have no need to root the phone, but I don't know if I want the update.
I bought the phone outright, so it is mine. I do realize that rooting voids the warranty.
QUESTION 1: If I do root with the root injected firmware that does not trip the counter, will that prevent future OTA updates?
QUESTION 2: Is KitKat an improvement? Should I just let it do it?
I have gone to app mgr to try to force stop/ disable the "AT&T updater", but it is greyed out, so I can't disable it.

I want to say there's a way to stop it w/o root, but I honestly can't remember!
I did want to suggest that while still on 4.1.1, take advantage and use the free Sim unlock method posted in General. That way if you ever sell it you can offer it to many more people than if it's locked.
Or if you ever need to use it on another network, you can.
As for kk, I can't do a full update unfortunately, but judging from the roms I've ported for the T999, I think it's great! There are plenty of people that will both agree and disagree though.

I was only able to postpone it by doing a factory reset. No big deal as I do not have much stuff on the phone yet. It was going to do the update whether I wanted it or not, as I had postponed it a maximum of 3 times.
It's party the principle of the matter. I should not be forced to install a new version, but also I like this version fine, and AT&T has admitted problems with KitKat and the S4 (or maybe it was the S5?), and I don't want to run into any issues on mine. I own the phone outright, so I should be able to do what I want with it.
I still have 11 days to take it back to Best Buy and return it for full refund, so I guess I could let it update, and if I don't like it, I can return it, get another that has 4.1.1 on it, and root it.
I'll head over to general right now and do the free sim unlock.

Evidently the update had already downloaded when I had the phone on wi-fi when I first got it. The install postponements were only allowed 3 times once the update was downloaded.
After I did the factory reset, I made sure I had wi-fi turned off.
Now, the check for updates button is the active one, whereas before, the continue update was highlited/active, and the check for updates was greyed out. This was because the update had already downloaded. Factory resetting got rid of it.
According to AT&T, the update can only be done when on wi-fi, so as long as I have my wi-fi turned off, it shouldn't be an issue.
I don't use wi-fi much at all, just my data plan.
This at least gives me some time to figure out a way to disable the updater, or root the phone, or go with the update. I may at some point want to use wi-fi, so I'll need to decide what to do.

I am using 4.4 and do not have any problems..... My battery life has been signicantly better on KK then JB and my ram sits at around 500mb.....this is my own opinion but I suggest to update after you do the free unlock

I will probably do that. I haven't unlocked the phone yet, as I guess I need another sim, non AT&T, to do the unlock?

Actually, no you don't need another sim! That's only if you unlock with a code.

Just follow instructions. Theyre the same for tmobile and att. I just knew exactly where to find the tmobile one.
