custom or stock rom? - LG Optimus G Pro

i m thinking about whether i flash a custom rom or not...
it's reli confusing....
i love the lg stock function like qmemo, qslide...
but at the same time i want kitkat since many nice apps require 4.3+ and more rom customization (modules in xposed framework dun reli work well with lg stock, just a few of them work perfectly)....
wt do u guys think i should do
sorry for my bad english

Qremote can be flashed on stock ROMs and the xfloatinghalo xposed module coupled with Notification Shortcut and Halo Shortcut gives you a feature similar to qslide but you can use any app.

I've stuck with stock, specifically a debloated ROM, mainly for battery performance — my standby battery life is ridiculous — and text wrapping/reflow. Google seen fit to remove text wrapping/reflow in 4.4 and that's something I really need in my browser and only Opera worked on the ROMs I tested.
However, as Neroga pointed out, you can pretty much get the extra functions if you want them. Furthermore, 4.4 should be hitting the OGP in a month or two

[Q] most stable ROM?

Sorry for being retarded, but I can't find anything about multi window feature in custom ROMs long feature list. I hate those useless feature with plenty of S, so I am looking for a vanilla ROM with:
1. Multi window feature
2. Change display mode from standard to natural,
3. S-Note
That is all. I don't need any fancy colorize or anything like samsung accounts, or smartstay, etc. Only a fast and stable phone to work with.
As for S-Note, if I can get its replacement so that I can write anything pretty quick, I can live with that.
Any suggestion which ROM does that? Or every ROM basically has those options without mention it?
Thank you

I don't think you can get Vanilla ROM with TW features. But you can get Vanilla "look". May this is the ROM you are looking for

As for bloatware by samsung, you can easily delete them from system apps. That's one of the benefits of rooting your phone.

If that's the case, try a ROM with floating multi window, I haven't tried one though. Awesome Notes HD is a great app. You can pin in on your notification drawer to get quick access to it. I don't use S-Note for most of my notes, its slow, if not laggy.
I use Android Revolution. Looks like the stock Samsung ROM, only it has a lot of bloat removed, and is quicker.

Multiwindow feature and S Note are both dependent on touchwiz frameworks. At the moment it is next to impossible to get them on AOSP/CM based roms. Also there are no other alternatives that are as good as Multiwindow at the moment, floating window apps dont even come close and are very limited. My suggestion to you is to download one of these sammy based roms particularly ARHD and use titanium backup app to freeze all the unwanted S apps.
Install android revolution rom... its fast and with out bloatware. U can top it up with simplistic framework if needed
There are too many roms and you will really get confused. Try one and see whats missing and find that one in another rom and install it.:good:
Alliance rom v3. Very polished, average of 30 of usage with 6 hours of screen time.

LOL.. that's the problem. I've found too many ROMs, some claims it's stable, but other claims that it is not. I am looking a stable one, and I am not that fans of features and gimmicks. I don't even use sammy's keyboard. I can't part with swiftkey. I also have my own personal favorite apps from contacts, sms, radio, and many things, and I prefer to use those instead of bundled ones.

Even i have tried so many roms before. Now i dont do that. I just prioritize as what i want in a rom. For me, stock sammy features were must. So ARHD suited me most. Then removed bloatware by rom cleaner so that i have more memory. Simplistic framework if you want to change certain things. Thats it. For me,my phone should not lag, should take what ever i throw at it,give decent battery. I got it with ARHD.
And always either do what majority follow cuz of feedback or experiment on your own. :good:

Yeah, because I work a lot with my phone, using Citrix Receiver, ssh, and remote desktop everyday there, and can't do a lot of experiments. So, yeah.. that multiwindow is VERY important since remote desktop would disconnect when I switch, and I am trying to narrow down my candidate ROM list.
I can accept once a month FC, but not a constant nagging problem with pretty GUI like cMIUI or RR. Granted, some people prefer lot of features, with newest ROM, sacrificing stability, but that's not me. And my S2 was very stable with vanilla ROM, and I like stock Nexus very much. The reason why I was starting from there. Also there are lots of ROM there with different focus. Stable ones, featured ones, fast ones, pretty ones, etc.
Thanks for info. I have downloaded ARHD, and will flash it tonight.. any other stable ROM I should consider?
ARHD ROM is pretty stable minus user error. I think there's a list somewhere in these threads showing you what you can and what you shouldn't freeze. I honestly don't find freezing stock apps all that useful. For one they don't give you usable space and second they don't keep running in the background and seldom wake the phone. I'd say ArHD+ Simplistics+ Nova Launcher+ Perseus kernel and you're good to go.

I don't like it when those useless apps keep asking me to create a backup account, nor any app that always asking me to register, notif me a promo, ask me to leave comment, rate, or do something while it is in the background. I don't use them, but they keep annoy me. I hate that. I don't care too much for waking the phone, as my phone rarely sleep while I am awake. I also keeps 3 battery with me. As I said, I use my phone for work, and those useless notif always distracts me.
I tried Omega, AOKP, CyanogenMod and a couple of more on my old S2, my wifes S3 and my Note2.
For some reason I always fall back on WanamLite.
The most satisfying rom for me regarding stability, (stock camera), quick no wipe upgrades.
Never had issues, just works as it should.
Only missing a kitchen app like omegas kitchen but for Wanam.
So 1st place WanamLite
2nd Omega
3rd AOKP
All above w Nova Launcher

I used to get so many FC om touchwiz, at least 4 on a daily basis. With Alliance v3 I've been getting a bit better battery life as well as smoothness. No FC and I never I'll wiped from v1 to v2 nor v2 to v3 and it's running incredibly stable.
AR HD no fuzz, all touchwiz

Looking for ROM Recommendations based on my use profile.

Hey All!
So my Nexus 4 took a big spill the other day that put it out of commission and i had to go to T-Mobile to get another phone. Last month i looked into the phones that were on the market (because my friend lost hers and i was helping her pick out a phone) and the choices we came down to were Nexus 6, Galaxy S5, and LG G3. Well She ended up finding her old phone but from that research i knew which one i wanted to get. I really like the nexus series but 6 inches is a deal-breaker for me, my biggest complaint about this LG G3 is that its too big...
In any case, i have had the phone for about one day but i can't stand the LG ROM on it. It feels slow (even with 3GB of RAM in this thing!) and I really don't like all the bloat ware the Tmobile put on my phone.
I like the stock android experience and want to find one that comes pretty close to it (although extra features are always a plus). Here is what I prioritize in my phone (starting with highest priority and going down:
-Stable, First and foremost i cannot stand a crash, i hate hate hate it. I need the ROM to work just as well (if not better) than the stock android ROMs on the nexus line
-Working Hardware, i take a bunch of pictures and am constantly using mobile data (4G LTE) so i need all these to work well
-Battery Life, I play games a lot on my phone during the day when waiting around for the bus or whatever, i like to have my battery last as long as possible so i don't need to break out a portable charger.
-Responsive, i don't need to have a ton of crazy amazing features, but i do want it to be responsive, nothing peeves me more than having input lag when texting someone.
-Customizability, i really do enjoy the fact that i can change the home buttons on that appear on the bottom of the screen on the LG G3 ROM, its a nice touch to be able to tap a button to get your notifications to pull down (especially on such a large phone), so customizability of small features like that go along way with me, small things like being able to see the day next to time i really love.
-Lastly i like to have my phone flat on my desk a lot and with the button on the back the best way to turn it on is the double tap, so if possible (but not necessary) i would like to retain that feature.
Some ROMs i have been looking at and read reviews but cant really decide which to try are Cyanogen Mod 12, Illusion, and PurpleDrake.
Based on my user profile (what is most important to me) which ROMs (can be one of the ones i listed or whatever one you think works best) would you recommend.
Also is flashing a custom kernel very popular on the LG G3? I know it was on the nexus 4 but is it also beneficial on this device?
Last, is there a good instruction on xda for rooting and unlocking the bootloader (and possibly flashing a custom recovery) for the LG G3 D851 (The specific one i have)?
Your best bet is to get a stock-based ROM then install Xposed + some modules to customize it to your liking. A really good stock ROM is CloudyG3. It will give you all the stock features like IR remote, good camera app, double tap to wake, WiFi calling etc. I recommend getting a 3rd party launcher that allows you to set gestures. I use Nova Launcher and have "swipe down" open up the notification drawer. CM12 and other AOSP-based ROMs are probably smoother and faster but they will be more prone to crashing and lack stock features (though double tap to wake is in all).

Thanks so much for your input! What is xposed? Is is an app that you install after flashing the ROM or is it something like GAPPS which your flash during installation of your ROM? Where can i find more information on what Xposed is and how it provides features?
Why do you say that my best bet is a stock-based ROM over an AOSP one?

Basically, Xposed is a framework that allows you to install/remove codes (modules) on-the-fly. Easy to install. More info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/xposed-faq-issues-t2735540
Stock-based over AOSP because of your preferences lol. They're generally more stable and let you take advantage of ALL of the G3's hardware.

Do you know any specific problems that AOSP have with the G3 hardware over the Stock? I am really looking to get rid of bloatware and increase responsiveness and battery life. I just get this weird feeling like the stock ROM is slooooooow.
Also does the Xposed framework load down the phone at all? I feel with each module i install it would get progressively slower with all the stuff running in the background. Doesnt seem very lightweight after having the cloudyG3 installed i should have a ton of features (since its stock and not AOSP). seems like it would lag down it even more.
I'm just looking for a stable ROM with a decent set of features (i don't need anything too crazy) that is responsive (i feel with 3GB of RAM i shouldnt have to deal with lag anymore) and has a decent battery life (3000mAh is a lot, even with the large screen). What can you guys recommend based on that simply details?

Samsung-specific features vs. AOSP/Custom ROM

Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Tab S 8.4 and I do have it rooted along with a custom recovery but I'm still running the stock Lollipop Samsung ROM with Touchwiz. Here is my question: If I were to flash a non-Samsung ROM like IronROM or CM12 or anything based on AOSP, what are the Samsung features I would be losing?
Here's what I can tell so far:
Fingerprint Reader
Multi-Window
Touchwiz Overlay
Hancom Office Software
S-Voice? Unsure
Peel Smart Remote? Unsure
Toolbox
Quick Connect
Will I lose Power Saving and Ultra Saving Modes? Unsure
Guest mode/Private mode
Knox? Unsure what this does
Thank you.
Bumping this in case anyone has any insight they could share with me, thank you.
IronROM is a Touchwiz 5.0.2 ROM, not AOSP. Since you have custom recovery isntalled, you should try flashing AOSP ROMs to experience the difference yourself. Perhaps you'll become a flashaholic like many of us :victory: . A Marshmallow ROM is available. I tried several TW and AOSP ROMs on various devices, and I decided I prefer TW.

Unfortunately, I now consider myself to be a reformed flashaholic I was hoping to avoid flashing several ROMs since it's a time-consuming process.
I did read up on some ROMs and might move over to IronROM since it keeps some of the Samsung features that might be useful. I'll end up deleting/freezing others that I don't want I suppose.
Thanks.
Personally, the only thing that keep me from using an AOSP Rom is Split Window, something that I use a lot.
You should consider if there is some TouchWiz feature that you can't live without, I consider most of it crapware.
Dont forget to run the Wanam LP Xposed module. It adds some customizations to TW.
Thanks all. I think multi-window and fingerprint reader are enough to keep me on the TouchWiz. I'll switch to IronRom and with Xposed that should do the trick, especially if I disable a lot of other Samsung bloat. Thanks again!
One major factor to me is that aosp does not support exfat. In this day and age and the size of media files that's a killer.
Also let's put something straight. TW like any other gui such as sense is just an enhanced interface.
It does provide many useful features. Samsungs problem is its insistence on bogging it down with unnecessary bloat, also knox should be optional.
TW can be just as efficient as aosp or cm.
On the tab A they included very little bloat and it runs very well.
The tab S has quite powerful hardware and should fly, which it does when all the chaff is removed.

Oh I had no idea about the lack of exfat support! That settles it then, I'm sticking with TW for sure and will switch to IronROM since it adds a few things and also enables the use of Xposed due to being deodexed etc. I can definitely disable the other bloat I don't need, in fact I have done that already on my current stock 5.0.2 ROM as well.
I am a serial Nexus user and the last 10 or so of my devices have all been Nexus, so TouchWiz is taking some getting used to. It does add some useful features and it's easy enough to get rid of what you don't want/need.
Thanks again everyone, much appreciated.

Cm13 does suport fingerprint sensor and multi Window (not 4 Windows, or mini Windows) but fingerprint isnt working right now.
Peel does work with aosp.
S voice is crap and Google search (even cortana beta) is far better.
Toolbox can be used by using an app called Toolbox (play store it, there are 5 i think)
So, you will only lose (and miss) ultra power saving Mode, because cm13 (even xposed modules have) has Its own saving Mode called doze
Knox is a security Mode to protect your info. (i never use it)
Guest/private Mode, are cm since cm12 and of course on cm 13 too
Soundcamp, the music workstation from Samsung, does not work on AOSP but is OK on IronRom.

Finger print will never work for this device on an AOSP ROM. The sensor is a proprietary Samsung device, they will not release the source code for it. Regardless of the native support for fingerprint sensors in MM, it is impossible to build support for the Samsung sensors into an AOSP ROM without the source code.

LG Stock without LG look

I have a lot of experience with Linux but despite having similar roots, Linux and Android are certainly very different beasts so I have a pretty noob question...
Would it be technically possible to easily create a ROM based on LG Stock, like Fulmics, but without the LG style and bloat? Basically LG Framework and camera but the rest (settings, dialer, icons, everything else) is pure stock Android.
For doing that You have to port google stock android app to lg g3 or theme the apps you need....i think so
Hi there. Your over-complicating the issue.
The best way to go about this would be to root your phone, freeze bloat-apps (I use system tuner pro to disable the annoying sms that my carrier sends through broadcast channel) and then install nova-launcher or something of the sorts. I now completely switched over to CM.. still on 12.1 though, as 13 is a tad buggy atm.
Not sure on how to go about the settings menus and stuff modification, but maybe someone else has figured that one out.
As for creating an entire rom based on LG's, I'm more worried about the legal constraints than anything else... their software might be android in its core, but it's still proprietary.
Maybe you can learn more if you start helping developers with current ROM's. I've always wanted to but never had the time.
Teoritically It is possible porting LG ui and camera to cm but no one will do it because framework need do much sources otherwise it will fc
Its not even worth the work

I was thinking the other way. Taking a stock based ROM like Fulmics have done but stripping out the hideous LG tweaks such as the oversized navigation soft-touch buttons and the ugly status bar icons.
Also replacing LG Dialer, calculator, calendar, email, etc with the normal Android ones.

Thanks. I wanted to try an avoid xposed if poss because it messes up Snapchat but it may be the unavoidable way to go.
true it sucks too cause when it come to lg. The g2 g3 and id say so on that stock roms are better in my opinion but i dont use a lotta app most people do i dont facebook i dont even really know whT snap chat is lol im old fashioned face book is the devils tool no good will ever come of it.
Stock rom without personalization layer
It would be interesting to have a stock rom and delete completely its layer of personalization (LG UX 3.0) and have pure android without customization. Is there any possibility to delete your personalization layer? In this aspect, the rom wins much fluidity. One of the main disadvantages of using rom like cyanogenmond, is the loss of the quality of the camera (Due to the framework of LG) but its fluidity and performance is extraordinary.

Stock Rom vs Custom Roms.

Today, I went back to the Stock rom, Lg G3 marshmallow... even tho i have bloatwares of Tmobile and other apps, the performance is smooth, battery is good also i found that the phone doesn't get hot on the back like when using custom roms.
I have been using different custom roms, like N&N, Fulmics 5.3 and 6.0 ... etc but all had the issue of getting my phone super hot and not smooth as stock.
Are you using a custom rom for Lg g3?
If yes, which one and why you choose it over the stock? pros and cons of the custom rom?
Thanks!

well i flashed Fulmics 6.1... the cellphone network wasn't working and wasn't able to power off the phone or restart it... so i flashed 30d modem and bootloader and everything is working fine now... i hope we get nougat.. but it seems it is going to come only as AOSP ...it is good if IR blaster and keyboard were ported, but we have to live with crappy camera :/

I been off of stock for awhile now. I rooted my phone and flashed a custom rom within two weeks. Way too much bloatware on stock. I tried a few roms. My favourite was Dirty Unicorns, but I am on Slimsabre 5.1.1. now. I am considering trying Paranoid Android to see how it is. Plus right now I am running without gapps, which is another advantage to custom roms. My battery life has greatly improved and I love it without Google Play Services. I prefer the AOSP roms over even stock roms like Fulmics. I tried Fulmics and I wasn't really impressed with it. More customization I have found, and I like the custom kernels settings that are available. Only thing I do miss is the knock code feature. It was so much easier and faster to unlock the phone that way. I had overheating issues as well. Once I lowered my resolution to 1080p the overheating woes were done.

well.. AOSP has a big disadvantage for me because of the Camera quality, a lot of force close and the lack of features, IR blaster and keyboard...but i guess some were ported?... and i guess the knock code feature can be added through xposed? i remember seeing a module there.
Also, not sure i can live without gapps, for updates and looking for apps and also the voice commands, make the phone smart, useful and fun.
overheating issues with aosp?
At the end, we are going to end up with AOSP one day because of Nougat won't be supported by snapdragon 801... and CM is doing a good job with it but it seems that what they are going to port is just some features and the UI... which makes it quiet hard to leave the full stock rom for AOSP .

Yes the camera quality suffers but for me, I don't use the camera really so I am fine with it. The knock code from xposed only works when the screen is on, which defeats the purpose of the knock code I think. There is f-droid, and apk's that I use. Plus if I switch roms, titanium backup has my apps backed up so it saves the headache of having to install each one again. I've been getting away from Google do no Gapps is the first part. I am starting to trust open source more now. I had overheating issues but once I lowered the resolution to 1080p it fixed the issue.
