Main board replacement? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So my wife's power switch finally quit on her s2. We have since upgraded to note 3's, and gave our s2's to our daughters. I was going to just get the power switch replaced, but found a great deal on a complete mother board. Is there anything special that I will need to do to replace the board, other than unplugging all the connections and hooking up new board? Thanks in advance.

Nope, everything should be like butter. As long as the boards are identical it should just fit n snap. I have 2 t989's that id switch boards once in a while for fun, after 4-5 times, one of my boards stopped showing display but works with hdmi adapter to my big screen. Guess too many snaps on the board or something. Any problems, hit me up.

Thanks man, I appreciate the info!!. I have the board out already, very simple for sure. I just didnt know if it would need to be reflashed or something like that. Im guessing I might have to update it and restore her phone and apps more than likely? The board should be here by Friday. Picked it up off of ebay for 40 bucks with a 30 day guarantee to be in fully working condition, crossing fingers. Ill let you know how it goes. Thanks again.

Any good news about that board? How'd it go?

Anyone nail down the HW cause of the Black Screen of Death (Sprint wont fix mine)

So pretty simple, I got the notorious Black Screen of Death that happens to a lot of epic users. No Samsung/Boot animation logo displayed on boot, but the phone boots successfully. I can have touch response, along with my soft keys lighting up. I have tried every single possible fix for the Epic 4g, including spare batteries, ODIN, etc.
I've searched through a ton of threads on XDA, unfortunately all of them end on "go to Sprint". I went to the store today and was told because I've had my phone 13 months, It's no longer covered by warranty and they refuse to do the $35 replacement. Right now I have only $40 to my name, so the $100 Samsung is quoting me for a fix isn't possible atm. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what exact HW part is failing? I'm an EE, so working with tiny electronics doesn't phase me. Idk if i should look for a blown cap./chip, disconnected wire, or a bad solder joint. I'd like to have a plan before I go into it. Does anyone have any ideas? If i can buy a spare part I'd gladly do it.
I don't really have a solution to the screen of death, but you can sell your epic to Sprint or Bestbuy for like 40$ and add the 40$ you have left and purchase another.
http://m.cowboom.com/index.cfm?page=details&contentID=850763
Maybe just odin again. I had no samsung logo on one odin and then I odined the same thing and it fixed it. I think its a sw issue not hw.

If that's the case could you point me towards the thread or give me a vague direction? My Epic is in about 8 pieces on my desk right now and I'm thinking of a full reassembly to at least make sure none of the cables have come loose.
Here's a tear down video for the epic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeO89VGAPuU&feature=youtube_gdata_player
If you ribbon cable is damage it cost between 5$ -10$ to get another one.
Thx for the info. As a follow-up heres what my cable looked like when I took it apart: instagram com/p/Ow3Jj4uyW6
It looks like the sliding of the cable wears down the thin black base of the cable, causing a short to occur on the cable. I've ordered a replacement and will update when it gets here
Good to hear you found the problem, btw do you have TEP? Sprint would have fixed it for free if you took it there.

Nope, hence why I'm at DIY stage right now. I usually don't get TEP because most software problems I can fix, but I never expected a manufacturing defect

galaxy note 2 completely dead

Hi I have a note 2 and replaced the screen completely before that the phone was working perfectly. I assembled everything back checked that everything was connected putted the battery tried to turned on and nothing. I also connected to the charger and still nothing no charging doesn't boot up. What could be happening here I double checked everything and nothing is missing if anyone could help me I'll appreciate it
Random guess, but like a computer you could have had static electricity and not grounded prior to working and fried your motherboard
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
man this is scary as I broke my screen on july 4th and is waiting for my replacement screen to arrive. I'm going to try to replace the screen myself. Maybe you broke a wire or something while you were detaching the screen from the digitizer.
Now i'm nervous about doing the screen replacement myself...oh wells, gotta save some money...lol
I think I know why it doesn't work is because I'm trying to use the n7100 screen on my sgh-t889 this version of t-mobile uses the n7105 screen and I bought the wrong one. That's why it won't work

Well, I hate to point out the obvious, but apparently that is not the case.
Did you wear some type of non-conductive gloves when you were doing this? handling circuitry with bare hands is a big no no. It is very possible that you ruined the device simply by touching it.
Here is what I would do (not anything but troubleshooting to pin point a possible problem really):
Warranty the thing.
Good luck.

maybe a defective part..
How do you know the replacement screen is not bad itself..
have you tried connecting it to the computer and getting into download mode or seeing if the phone is ACTUALLY Working..Also a bad or cheap lcd could have shorted something out if you are sure you did not do so replacing it..
Sorry for your luck but it sounds like you need another note 2 phone for some testing. or RMA THE LCD and try another .
Good LUCK

[Solved] Screen comes on but does not respond to any touch

I'll start by saying I don't have a whole lot of specifics on the issue as this isn't currently my phone. I'm looking to buy one and the seller said that one morning the phone would sporadically not respond to touch and by the end of the day wouldn't respond at all. She said that sometimes if she repeatedly locks and unlocks the phone it will work for a short time before becoming unresponsive again. She says there has been no water damage and she hasn't done any sort of software updates recently. She did say that a couple weeks before the issue started that it fell off her night stand but didn't seem to effect it at the time.
My question is has anyone run into this issue before? If so is it a software issue that could be remedied by doing a full wipe back to stock software? Or is it a hardware issue such as a bad digitizer or maybe something as simple as the digitizer cable coming loose?
I did some googling and the only thing I found about this issue was a result of flashing the wrong ROM to the s3. Any help would be appreciated.

She says she managed a factory reset before the screen completely quit responding. But I don't know if she just cleared her data or did a full reset

This happened to me once. I fixed it by factory resetting and reflash the ROM.
Looks like it'll be an easy fix(fingers crossed). I'll update after I purchase.

Well it appears to be hardware... I tried doing a wipe/reset in recovery and after that didn't help I flashed back to stock using odin. Still nothing so it looks like I'll be replacing the screen.

I was going to say it sounds like the digitizer controller died/was bricked by a wrong rom.

Forgot to mention it but I pulled the back off and checked the ribbon cable. Removed and reseated it as well as made sure it wasn't corroded. Still a no go but on the bright side I found a nicely priced "blemished" screen on eBay so in a couple weeks I should be rocking the s3! And I'm glad to be in these forums. Looks like I'm going to have more options than I can handle.

If blemished means lightly scuffed just use some glass cleaner on it in a small coat, buddy of mine did that with his iPhone looked brand new.
& yep lol, soo many choices for ROMs and kernels for this phone, gotta love it :good:
So I got bored and disassembled and cleaned the connections on the board as well as the connections on the back of the screen. After reassembling it I get response from the touch screen again although its as though there's a phantom finger making random movements on the screen.

Looks like you've got ghosts
Making the iPhone jealous one user at a time.
So I guess it was just a bad digitizer. Just got my new one and got it swapped out and I'm good as new! Though if anyone else is looking to replace a screen and aren't too brave when it comes to taking a phone apart I would suggest getting a screen that has the frame already attached to it. Removing the screen from the frame and reattaching is a bit tricky.

What parts are broken in my Xplay? (Gonna repair)

My old friend has given up on me and is laying on the shelf in coma. I need your help to revive him back to life.
So I've had my xplay for about 2 years now and it worked well into the end. First the touchscreen stopped working (I could get it working sometimes by swyping the gamepad down and up but in the end it completely stopped working). I tried many different roms and etc no luck it was a hardware problem. I used the gamepad to use the phone until the screen stopped working. Sometimes a reboot could make it work again but it eventually got worse and it was dead. I can still feel the vibrations when it starts and also when it wants me to choose if I want go to recovery.
I've taken apart the phone to see if a cable was loose but there was none so I put the phone back together to see if it would be working after i cleaned and checked the flex cables. Sadly nope.
I must say that I'm not a handyman but taking this phone apart was super easy and I never thought I would be able to put it back together but that was also easy.
So here is my question. What parts do I need to replace to get the screen running again?
I appreciate all help I can get and sorry for the WALL OF TEXT. Cheers!

99.99% it's slider flex cable. Replacing it should not be hard, since you now how to open your Play.
Touchscreen, front buttons, light sensor, proximity sensor and front camera are all connected to motherboard with that one flex cable.
Video guide might be helpfull too:

If/when you get the flex cable installed and it solves the issue, please report back here if it solved your issue so others who mau have a similar or same issue can get an idea if this fixes it.
Yes, I'll report back as soon as I get the cable and I got it running again.

You can swap out the charging port yourself relatively easily.
Use this video guide. It's VERY thorough. It shows you how to COMPLETELY disasemble the S4. You will find that you have access to the charging port pretty soon in the dissasembly process.
I think you have to swap out that entire circuit board that the charging port is connected to. I mean you could desodler the port and solder a new one one, but that's a lot of work for minimal gain when you can buy the entire assembly for $8.
They are all over eBay.
Here's 1 example. I searched for S4 Chargine Port
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Chargin...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item3a88d3b1c9
I think you are looking at maybe a 10-15 operation on the phone here with an $8 repair.
That's assuming that the fried charging port didn't blow something else out. But were I a gambling man, I'd bet that it somethign else did get fried it would be localized to something else on that lower circuit board and you need to replace that whole peice anyway.
The S4 is remarkabley easy to break down and change defective parts on. So don't get too upset. This is an easy fix.
Hey thanks for the reply I feel a little better now, actually a lot better.
You somehow built my confidence up & I may just fix it myself. First thing I gotta do is open up the hood on my s4 lol and go from there.
Thanks for the ebay link.
Oh one more thing, you mentioned something about a video? I see no link to the video.
Surprisingly S4 is still up an running just like any other day. Amazing I know! But sucks that I wont be able to charge it
So I gotta find a cheap replacement in the meanwhile. Anyways Im getting off topic now.
Thanks again for the reply I really appreciate it...

My bad....i cant link it from my phone.
But look at my profile and look for Threads Started By Skipjacks.
Like the 3rd or 4th one down is a thread on fixing a broken proximity sensor.
The link to the video is in the first post. I used the same video for the proximity sensor guide. It is a complete tear down video of every component on the phone.
Watch it and you will see how easy it is. The electronics are simple. Its getting the plastic case off that is the hardest...took me almost a whole minute!
Sent from your phone. You should be more careful where you leave that thing.
